Two finger triple tap brings up the item chooser.
I believe that is what you are looking for.

Re: General Screen search on iOS

2019-06-07 Thread B G
I've a feeling we may be at somewhat of a cross-purposes here gentlemen. (smile)
None of the choices available on the rotor will take you to the next
telephone number - which would just be a sequence of digits and
possibly a few hyphens interspersed among them - on the page, but
let's not worry about that too much.
The idea, to recap, is a general screen search tool, in other words, a
means of scanning the output pages for a string of unicode characters.
You'd be able to conjure up search within any app, in any screen
(hence the term general) and assuming the success of the search, shift
focus on to your quarry in one single leap, as it were.

Again, do please feel free to ask if you're unclear about anything.
Regards, Ben

Do you know about the Rota and it's different features?

If you are in safari and need to work through things then the rota has things
such as viewed links, links
Headings containers
Buttons,
And a truckload of others,
I'd say use those to find what your looking for.

Unless the feature exists already -- and has therefore hitherto escaped my
notice -- a general screen search tool on iOS would come in very handy.
Suppose you're in Safari and the information, e.g. a phone number, is many
lines or even screens down. Rather than traversing everything before you get to
it, you would perform a unique gesture, e.g. a two-finger rest i.e. tap and
hold in position, followed by a thumb swipe to pull up a search dialogue box.
You would enter your search text and press enter (or perform a two-finger right
swipe on the onscreen Braille keypad) and voila, focus is positioned at the
start of your search result! Of course, you could make the feature as fancy and
elaborate as you want but its very basic function should be searching for the

Re: General Screen search on iOS

2019-06-07 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There is a find on page feature
within the share tab. Tap share, and it is almost at the very end, I think you
have to tap the second more button to get to it. If it doesn't give the text
field to type in your search the first time, tap the done button, which will be
where the tabs or pages button usually is, then tap share again, and swipe left
to the find on page area. You can drag this find on page feature to a more
convenient place in the share dialogue, I really need to do that.

Subject: Encrypt.me vpn & accessibility good news

Hi,

I’ve been using for some time encrypt.me VPN service. It’s
a paid service but I have found their application fairly simple in terms of
accessibility. They have just changed their top people - and since I’m on
their mailing list - I got to know about it and received a hello message. I
took the opportunity to write to the responsible person, Terry Myers to make
him aware that accessibility of his service and apps are very important to
visually impaired users. He responded very quickly with a very positive
message and a commitment to work with his team towards making
encrypt.me & the related apps on all platforms fully
accessible. I paste his responses to me below in inverted comas.

"You are the 2nd person to reach out to me about this. I'm going to make it my
priority to ensure that we provide improved accessibility for all our users.

Thanks,

Terry”

"
I wanted to provide an update.

I spoke with our Head of Development yesterday. He's briefed the team this
morning, and they're starting the process of exploring the accessibility
features in each operating system.

We are well versed with iOS' voiceover protocol. Windows also has a wide
featureset, which we need to explore. Android is something we need to do more
research on.

We are also investigating the possibility of using a monochrome theme, for our
visually impaired users. We are exploring the feasibility of this now.

Thanks,

Terry"

Hi Donna,

Yes I'm noticing a similar issue with my series 4 watch,

I walk to and from work every day and that is about 20 minutes there and 35
minutes home due to it being up hill on the latter trip.
Yet I'm lucky if my watch is picking up the full walk to work in the mornings,

I sometimes get the prompt to start an outside walk, but that is not always

I've actually noticed this since having the series 4 watch I don't remember it

Hi all,

The subject line sums it up. I have been noticing this for a while, so today
decided to keep my own records to try and confirm the problem. According to my
watch--series 4--I have 7 active hours--I should have 8, and I have climbed
three flights of stairs--I've actually climbed 7. Obviously I can't comment on
the calorie calculation, as I have no way to measure that, but it seems likely
that if the other two rings are off, this one probably is too. I believe this
started with the most recent update, though I'm not 100% sure about that. Just
wanted to post here, because I know that others on this list also use the watch
to track their activity. I have reported this to Apple, and encourage anyone
else who notices this to do the same.
Best,
Donna

In a way this is good news. In another way it's scary, imo, because it

RE: mac book pro 2017

2019-06-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Janina,

 Yeah it is,
Considering it's lasted being hit by me and a 50 seater tour bus,
Dropped
Stood on,
 Sat on multiple times.
Keyboard losing keys,
Food stuck in the usb ports, I love children,

So yeah I got my moneys worth out of it,

I do think that if I get a 2017 refurbished device that automatically I lose
2 years off that devices life,
So we'll put that in to the thought process over the weekend.

Hi Again, Simon:

I think six years from a machine is actually pretty good.

My longest survivor ever was a 2008 Thinkpad X61s, which I just retired a
couple months ago as it no longer powered up in any way. Not at all.

I've had several desktop/tower machines go 8 or 9 years. And, I've had laptops
go almost as long.

But, here's the thing, if it's missing something you find fundamentally
important, like a keyboard you like and a boot chime you actually depend on to
function well, giving those up is unlikely to work out well, imo.

I'm currently torn. If there's really a Pro from 2017 with the old keyboard,
USB3, and a boot chime, I would consider that even though 16 Gb is something I
consider baseline.

I'm seeing the same problem in the Thinkpad X1 Carbon machines currently
available new.

I know Jason likes his Thinkpad P1 which can be had with 32 Gb ram. It has a
great keyboard, even compared to other Thinkpads, and it includes a numeric
keypad. How cool is that?

But, then one is giving up OS X.

Always some kind of trade-off!

Best,

Janina

RE: mac book pro 2017

2019-06-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Janina,

 The 2017 I7 2.5GHz 16GB ram & 512GB ssd pro has 2 USB-C ports for charging and
connectivity to go with a crazy new Zealand price of $3179.00
That's a refurbished price,
Brand new RRP is approx. 600 more.

But it would be my first choice

I'm thinking over the weekend on what device to purchase.

Simon:

That 2017 Pro with an I7 and 16 Gb RAM sounds a lot better. It should have a
pretty compelling price, because I should think that's pretty baseline specs
for 64bit Windows 10 under Bootcamp--especially if you also want to run the
Windows in some kind of vm.

For me it would also need USB 3 ports, at least one, as I've got Linux booting
off a tiny 256 Gb USB 3 stick that sticks out less far than the charging
connector on my Air.

Depending on the price and the weight, I will consider that one myself, because
I'm looking to upgrade and get a few more years out of chiming boots.

I do think asking for "a long time" may be asking a bit much from this
specification, though. It really does strike me as baseline today.

Best,

Janina

Re: Adjusting Individual Audio Sources on the Mac

2019-06-07 Thread kelly ford
Hi Robert,

Is it possible this program was renamed?  So far the only program by the
company you mentioned I’m finding is called Fission.  It appears to be an audio
editor/converter.

Hi Kelly,

There is an app from Rogue Amoeba called SoundSource that will almost certainly
do what you want.

This is an application that lives in the extras menu. At the moment, there is a
VoiceOver bug that keeps the VoiceOver option+control+space command from
opening the SoundSource window. So, you have to click the trackpad to open the
program from the extras menu. I have reported this and it will be fixed in an
update.

Is there any way to adjust the audio level for individual applications on the

I’m looking for something equivalent to opening the volume control on Windows
where you can make individual adjustments. I don’t know if something similar
exists on the Mac?

So far as I’m aware, Nemeth Code is supported under iOS, but not Mac OS. On the
Mac, you’ll get a braille representation of the text as it would be spoken.

Whether Apple’s recently announced enhancements to braille support will change
this (immediately or subsequently) is not publicly known. I would recommend
taking this up with Apple Accessibility. If they don’t receive comments on it,
it’s less likely to be given significant priority.

General Screen search on iOS

2019-06-07 Thread B G
Unless the feature exists already -- and has therefore hitherto
escaped my notice -- a general screen search tool on iOS would come
in very handy. Suppose you're in Safari and the information, e.g. a
phone number, is many lines or even screens down. Rather than
traversing everything before you get to it, you would perform a unique
gesture, e.g. a two-finger rest i.e. tap and hold in position,
followed by a thumb swipe to pull up a search dialogue box. You would
enter your search text and press enter (or perform a two-finger right
swipe on the onscreen Braille keypad) and voila, focus is positioned
at the start of your search result! Of course, you could make the
feature as fancy and elaborate as you want but its very basic function
should be searching for the next occurrence of the search string, and
positioning focus at start of said string.
What does the list think? Any comments, criticisms, any flaws in the
idea, all welcome.
I'm hoping once we've hammered out something we could all agree on we
will then present it to Apple as a feature request.

Re: Apple Watch no longer tracks activity accurately

2019-06-07 Thread Jessica Moss
I notice that a lot with the health app, but don’t own a watch, so can’t speak
for that. It seems to want to track flights of stairs climbed on my end at
random times, and sometimes not at all, which I find strange, considering the
fact that I climb steps off and on all day, sense we have them on both porches,
and I obviously use them every day, sometimes about 5 times a day or more,
depending on what I’m doing throughout the day.

Encrypt.me vpn & accessibility good news

2019-06-07 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I’ve been using for some time encrypt.me VPN service.
It’s a paid service but I have found their application fairly simple in terms
of accessibility. They have just changed their top people - and since I’m on
their mailing list - I got to know about it and received a hello message. I
took the opportunity to write to the responsible person, Terry Myers to make
him aware that accessibility of his service and apps are very important to
visually impaired users. He responded very quickly with a very positive
message and a commitment to work with his team towards making encrypt.me
& the related apps on all platforms fully accessible. I
paste his responses to me below in inverted comas.

Thanks,

Terry"

Apple Watch no longer tracks activity accurately

2019-06-07 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries

Best,
Donna

RE: Math Content and VoiceOver with Safari

2019-06-07 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
So far as I’m aware, Nemeth Code is supported under iOS, but not Mac OS. On the
Mac, you’ll get a braille representation of the text as it would be spoken.

Whether Apple’s recently announced enhancements to braille support will change
this (immediately or subsequently) is not publicly known. I would recommend
taking this up with Apple Accessibility. If they don’t receive comments on it,
it’s less likely to be given significant priority.

Re: How do I convert an mp4 file

2019-06-07 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
OK, I can confirm that ffmpeg is installable with homebrew, and that it
will convert.

Here's the quick overview:

1.) Install homebrew. There are several web pages that can guide on
this task. Here's just one:

https://brew.sh/

2.) Use it to install ffmpeg at the terminal:

brew install ffmpeg

3.) Use a command to extract your audio into a format you can use in
Amadeus. Here's an example that I keep in an executable script under
/usr/local/bin that provides me a 24-bit wav file. It could just as
easily be 16-bit.

#!/bin/bash
#Use ffmpeg to extract 24bit to audio.wav
#One argument is input file
ffmpeg -i "$1" -acodec pcm_s24le -ac 2 audio.wav

The above should leave an audio.wav file in your current working
directory. Rename or further transform as needed.

If you want 16 bit instead of 24, just change that value in the
operational line above.

Good luck!

Handbrake isn't for editing. It's for video file conversions.

Re: How do I convert an mp4 file

2019-06-07 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Handbrake is about keeping the video. In rereading her post, the problem
is not the Mac, but Amadeus.

I'm now thinking she really does need something Amadeus will by happier
using. So, that means ffmpeg and a file conversion on the Terminal, imo.

I'm going to see if I can get home brew to install ffmpeg. I'll report.

Re: How do I convert an mp4 file

2019-06-07 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
VLC will play those files, as will mplayer for osx.

These days I'm using ffmpeg to convert among formats when I need to do
that, but I do that on the Linux command line. I would expect I could
install the ffmpeg tool using Home Brew on my Mac, though, which would
make conversion in the terminal quite straight forward.

Let me know if you want to know more about that.

Best,

Janina

Re: Message Filters

2019-06-07 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Yeah, but not really, because Edge and Chrome are now both using the
same Google Blink rendering back end for their browsers.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/microsoft-edge-google-chrome-chromium,38192.html

In a way this is good news. In another way it's scary, imo, because it
threatens to squeeze everyone else out, i.e. domination and horizontal
monopoly.

Re: Message Filters

2019-06-07 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I'd definitely install the Chrome browser everywhere. Increasingly, it's
my go to browser in the gui.

For professional reasons I have many browsers under four different
operating environments. I will sometimes look at a particular
site on multiple browsers. It's really amazing how different a single
page can appear in different browsers.

Sometimes things will work in one OS and browser combination, but not
elsewhere. I have that problem with my SIP gateway service for my phones
which seem to take payments only from Chrome, and not Chrome on Android,
only Chrome on OS X or Windows.

Best,

Janina

Re: mac book pro 2017

2019-06-07 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi Again, Simon:

I think six years from a machine is actually pretty good.

My longest survivor ever was a 2008 Thinkpad X61s, which I just retired
a couple months ago as it no longer powered up in any way. Not at all.

I've had several desktop/tower machines go 8 or 9 years. And, I've had
laptops go almost as long.

But, here's the thing, if it's missing something you find fundamentally
important, like a keyboard you like and a boot chime you actually depend
on to function well, giving those up is unlikely to work out well, imo.

I'm currently torn. If there's really a Pro from 2017 with the old
keyboard, USB3, and a boot chime, I would consider that even though 16
Gb is something I consider baseline.

I'm seeing the same problem in the Thinkpad X1 Carbon machines currently
available new.

I know Jason likes his Thinkpad P1 which can be had with 32 Gb ram. It
has a great keyboard, even compared to other Thinkpads, and it includes
a numeric keypad. How cool is that?

But, then one is giving up OS X.

Always some kind of trade-off!

Best,

Janina

Re: mac book pro 2017

2019-06-07 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Simon:

That 2017 Pro with an I7 and 16 Gb RAM sounds a lot better. It should
have a pretty compelling price, because I should think that's pretty
baseline specs for 64bit Windows 10 under Bootcamp--especially if you
also want to run the Windows in some kind of vm.

For me it would also need USB 3 ports, at least one, as I've got Linux
booting off a tiny 256 Gb USB 3 stick that sticks out less far than the
charging connector on my Air.

Depending on the price and the weight, I will consider that one myself,
because I'm looking to upgrade and get a few more years out of chiming
boots.

I do think asking for "a long time" may be asking a bit much from this
specification, though. It really does strike me as baseline today.

Best,

Janina

Map bug on iPhone

2019-06-07 Thread 'Robert Cole' via MacVisionaries
Dear List,
This bug from 2017 still exists.
Am I the only one who is having this problem?
Using a iPhone 7 with the latest IOS.

Hello Robert,

Thank you for writing to Apple Accessibility. We appreciate your feedback.
In our testing, we found that the Details overlay is dismissed regardless of
whether you are using VoiceOver. We will pass this report along to the
appropriate team.

Sincerely,

Apple Accessibility

IOS 10 and
iOS 11 Maps App Card Grabber TimeOut VoiceOver Bug

DESCRIPTION:
In iOS 11, only when VoiceOver is enabled, the full-screen Card Grabber
display, times-out after 10 seconds, when reviewing the live route details
list.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.
Make certain that VoiceOver is enabled.

2.
Open Map and activate a route by selecting a destination and tapping the GO
button. Siri will announce a direction instruction; for example, "In one
mile, turn left onto Main Street."

3.
Single-finger, double-tap the "Arrival" label, located near the lower left
of the display in order to activate the Card Grabber which will bring up
various route options.

4.
Select Details. A directions list will be displayed. Unlike for a
non-VoiceOver user, for whom this list will remain on the screen until the
DONE button is activated, after approximately ten seconds with or without
screen activity, the list will disappear as if the VoiceOver user activated
the DONE button.

Please check this out.

Thank You,
Robert Cole

Re: Adjusting Individual Audio Sources on the Mac

2019-06-07 Thread Robert Carter

I have reported this and it will be fixed in an
update.

Re: Reading app-specific passwords on the Apple-id page

2019-06-07 Thread Daniel Gartmann

Hi Simon and all,

You only need this if you need to access your iCloud information via non-Apple
apps such as Microsoft Outlook.

That is my understanding anyway. Hopefully more people can chime in here.

I wondered if it’s more to do with your not use to the older mac keyboard, but
then you used windows computers / notebooks before your mac so I can only think
your picking up the butterfly better than those of us that don’t like them.

Great work and I’ll be coming for typing lessons.

I’m guessing that it is the fact that I’ve always made lots of typos so I’ve
not noticed over the years as my typing has improved and I’m probably making
less typos now days

Hi Donna,

Thanks for the honest reply.

I know a lot of folks world wide dislike the butterfly,
Then there are a lot that like them,

Petrus being a recently new convert likes his as does his wife like the
keyboard on her mac book.

Could that be as new users they aren’t use to the older format?
Thought for all…

I do wonder if apple are investigating options to replace the butterfly.

Hey Petrus,

The Auckland jive is only because I’m in Dunedin and it’s just one of those
things we do.

Could be worse, you could be in Australia!

The chime was there to indicate all devices were functioning correctly I
believe it was.

Then with the onset of solid state and non moving technology I guess they
thought it was no longer required.

It was just a great way to know the device was on and starting up.

As for the keyboard, I think that’s more of a it will grow on you as you use it
thing.
I use a 2018 pro at work and I deal with the KB but the straight flatness and
lack of key definition is what gets me the most.

Hi Tim,

I’ve gotta couple of options,

The air would be a custom build to fully spec’ed out and yes still has USB-A

But only 8GB ram,

I’m also looking at a 2017 I7 2.5GHz pro with 16gb ram and 512 GB ssd,
I’m not going to touch bar as that causes trouble with windows in bootcamp.

Which ever I end up doing it’s a long term thing so it will have to be

A ports, of which the MBP's have none. Battery life is good, but not
excellent. It's nice and light and handles processing big jobs well. If the
price is right, I'd go for it.

PS: I looked at the 2017 Air machines still available today. I'm
disappointed. It looks to me like the only advantage of leaving my 2014
Air for a 2017 model is a measly 4Gb more RAM. That's ain't enough
today, imo.

I'm back to looking at the small Thinkpad X1 Carbon machines for
laptops. I realize that would leave me out of the Apple eco system. I am
finding the new minis very attractive, so perhaps I'm thinking
transitionally.

You all have gotten under my skin enough so that I don't really want to
leave Apple out of my life. Heck, Safari has become my favorite gui
browser in recent months. Go figure.

 Hi List,

Just wondering if anyone on the list has a 2017 13.3" Mac book pro with 2.3GHz
I5 prodessor?

I'm just looking at one of these model machines from the apple refurbished
devices and wondered why such a nice sounding machine would have been returned
to apple?
I just wondered if this might be a problematic model as there are 3 of them
showing in the NZ apple website refurbished list.

Cheers for any information.

RE: mac pro pricing

The articles I’ve read are lacking in specifics beyond the base price. I expect
details will be forthcoming as the hardware becomes available. If you have the
kinds of processor and memory-intensive applications that require it, and the
budget, then it’s going to be an excellent machine, based on what I’ve read.

For the sake of perspective, you’ll be able to buy one for less than what a new
80-cell braille display currently costs. I’ve used an 80-cell braille display,
and I like it very much, but I haven’t reached the point of seriously making
the financial commitment.

Hi List,

Has anyone actually seen a pricing structure for the new Mac Pro yet other than
it’s base model price?

I know what the price will be in the USA but I’m wanting to price the fully
spec’d version to see what the price in NZ will be.

RE: mac book pro 2017

2019-06-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Janina,

Yeah I'm currently split on what to purchase as a replacement machine.

The fully worked 2017 air would do the job,
And has the to me better keyboard but then the 2018 pro 13" has more ram,
faster processor and USB-C,

However everything has down sides, the newer pro has the butterfly keyboard
which I'm not personally a fan of and will cost more for new adaptors but it
should survive 2 years longer in the life of simons products.

My 2013 air has now lasted 6 years,
Can I get that from a pro.
