RE: HomeKit thermostat?

2020-07-24 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Cameron,
It's in the app. As stated, the Nest has no physical switches. I use the app to
switch from heat to cool and sometimes to off.
Best Regards,

Les

Hi. Okay, thanks for the info.

One more question...

We have a gas furnace with bassboard heating and electric central air.
Our current thermostat has a physical switch that let's you choose heat, cool,
or off.

Does the Nest have this sort of switch or is it in the app? (I haven't actually
got to touch the Nest and I'll be buying it on amazon so thought I'd ask.)

I gave up trying to use Siri with the Nest, because I found it a
little too quirky. So in a nutshell, the Ecobee works great with
Siri, but the app is far less intuitive than Nest. The one thing I
can say though, is when you change the temperature with Siri, the
app puts it on what it calls a hold. You can set the app so that
the hold stays in effect until you cancel it. So, if you change the
temp with Siri, you can either change it back with Siri, or just
open the app and cancel the hold, in which case it reverts back to
 your pre-set temperature.

Re: HomeKit thermostat?

2020-07-24 Thread John JD Denning
The nest has no physical switches. Whether it can be controlled or not depends
on what wires are coming to the thermostat. You would really probably be best
if you contact Nest and ask them.

It's less layered, so easier to do things like modify the

set regular temps and mostly just leave them there, which is not how I

Re: HomeKit thermostat?

2020-07-24 Thread John JD Denning
If you just want to control the thermostat the nest app works very well with
voiceover. I have no real complaints with that. But if you want to integrate it
into a HomeKit environment like say to use it to control fans or shades then no
it’s not HomeKit compatible. Plus it isn’t as secure as HomeKit.

RE: HomeKit thermostat?

2020-07-24 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Donna,
I have not experienced the problems with SIRI that you have referenced. But my
needs are modest, I'm retired and that makes a difference.
Best Regards,

Les

Cameron, that is the very reason that we switched from Nest to ecobee. Nest and
Siri do not play well together. The only way to control Nest using Siri is via
Google Assistant. You cannot set up a Nest device in HomeKit.

RE: HomeKit thermostat?

2020-07-24 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Cameron,
Well, I've been a happy Nest user for several years. The app works well. You
can adjust the temperature easily and eventually, it will remember your
preferred settings. The only issue is the scheduling option as that based on a
grid. Honestly, not being able to schedule my temperature preferences was not a
show stopper for me. Overall, I'm a very satisfied Nest user.
Best Regards,

Les

How is the Nest app in terms of ease of use with Voiceover?

2020-07-24 Thread Tim M
Ok, I searched for iCloud in Microsoft store and found its the only one that
comes up.
Now I hit the get button and then install button. Now all that comes up for
iCloud is the launch button.
After that wa done I hit windows key and arrowed down iCloud was first choice
and hit enter.
Now the setup for iCloud came up asking for my apple account. Once I put the
info in it works just like it does on my mac.
Now it did ask me to sink a few things like book marks and then hit sink.
That was all there is to it.
So if you have something that just says cloud check for viruses, unless you
have another program using cloud services.

IPhone 11 whether forecast preferences Using SIRI?

2020-07-24 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi List,
Is there any way to have "SIRI" on my IPhone 11 include the wind speed & chance
of rain when you ask for the whether forecast?
Thanks
Chuck

Re: HomeKit thermostat?

2020-07-24 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Well, if you're a control freak, then I am, too.

I gave up trying to use Siri with the Nest, because I found it a little too
quirky. So in a nutshell, the Ecobee works great with Siri, but the app is far
less intuitive than Nest. The one thing I can say though, is when you change
the temperature with Siri, the app puts it on what it calls a hold. You can set
the app so that the hold stays in effect until you cancel it. So, if you change
the temp with Siri, you can either change it back with Siri, or just open the
app and cancel the hold, in which case it reverts back to your pre-set
temperature.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: HomeKit thermostat?

2020-07-24 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Donna,

I, too, have the Nest thermostat, and yes, the app is pretty straight forward.
Like you, I particularly like the fact that wherever I am in the house I can
adjust the temperature as needed. My only complaint so far is that I can’t use
the schedule feature, but have to keep adjusting the temperature for days until
the thermostat learns what I want it to do. When you used the app, did you ever
try working the schedule? I also do have the Google app, but haven’t looked
into using that one with my thermostat. I’ll take any ideas or suggestions.

Thanks so much,
Pete De Vasto

Re: HomeKit thermostat?

2020-07-24 Thread John JD Denning
Thank you, that’s the kind of feedback I was hoping to get. That is the one
I’ve been looking at. But really would love to know if somebody like something
else better or not.

I think a lot of the thought from different companies is that people will put
it in automatic and let it build your routine and set the temperature
automatically. I don’t do that I like to be able to tell it off on and what
temperature. But maybe I’m a control freak.

I have The nest right now. I’ve had it for many years is the original nest. The
app has its quirks, but is very straightforward. And I’ve been using it with
Siri through the Google app but that’s awkward.

Again thanks.

Hi John,

We have the Ecobee. Mostly I use that app rather than the home app, or I just
use Siri. Ecobee has done a nice job with accessibility. My only criticism is,
having also used the Nest app, I like the Nest app better. It's less layered,
so easier to do things like modify the temperature. I think Ecobee operates on
the premise that you will set regular temps and mostly just leave them there,
which is not how I operate.
