Re: Thoughts on Tuesday’s event?

2020-09-18 Thread Dan Rathburn

Donna,

I'll take your advice to heart. I bought a Sharp Talking Time in 1979 and
it's been lurking in my shirt pocket ever since. Wearing a watch again might
take some getting used to.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

I have never had a model with cellular data, and never felt I needed one.
Unless you'll spend a lot of time in situations where you won't have your
iPhone nearby, I wouldn't spend the money.

Cheers,
Donna

Hi all,

I’m surprised that there’s been no comment at all about Tuesday’s
event, though, I have to say that without talk of a new phone, it kind
of felt more like a non-event. :) But, just thought I would ask would
people’s thoughts are.

Personally, I don’t feel like there’s anything I absolutely have to
have, but I am considering the series 6 watch, and/or maybe a new
iPad. My current watch is a series 4, so upgrading to the 6 seems like
it might be worth it, and the blood oxygen monitor seems kind of cool.
I’m intrigued by the new iPad Air, though I’m not sure I want one that
is that big. I currently have a sixth-gen 9 inch, and I like that
size.

Anyone else have any reactions?
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Accessibility of portable air conditioners

2019-05-31 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

I bought a 10,000 BTU portable AC made by Haier for my condo about 5 years
ago. I was attracted by the portability part as well. First of all, it came
with a remote control with only 6 buttons that made uning it just a matter
of memorizing the buttons. The adjustable panel that fit into the window
that the hose or hoses attached to was a bit of a pain to move from one
window to another especially if the windows were sliders and different
sizes. Emptying the condensate tank on it was an issue sometimes. If I had
it to do over again I would've opted for a dual hose unit. I think they're
more efficient. Frankly, I could've bought two small window AC's for about
the same price and might've been a better coice for a 700 square foot condo.
If I was inclined to review the thing, I would've given it 3 out of 5 stars.

JMO,

Dan

You know the kind, the ones you roll around from room to room and put a
hose kit out a window. Are there any that are particularly accessible over
any others? And while we’re at it are there any that are better than
others? I’m currently looking at Honeywell products but Black & Decker and
others make them as well. Honeywell uses those flat panel, but unless
displays, but it has a remote control so I think that would help.Any help

Mary, I did try your trick of turning the phone over so the camera was

Re: How Do You Use iOS?

Hi,

It lets you use an IOS device like a tape measure. After calibration, place
the device at the start of the measurement, tap Start, move to the end of the
measurement, wait a few seconds and it will give you the distance. The
calibration is a bit tricky and it's good fro rough measurements.

Hi Mark, cool thread here’s my response to add to the others.

1. Good Mail for Enterprise, it’s a secure mail client owned by RIM now
that I use to access my work email. Since it’s a secure network we need to use
a client like this to access exchange.

2. iMessage, I use the native messaging app as well as the Mac app to work
with engineers in the field or other coworkers. It’s great for me as I can
respond on any device so it makes working very simple if I can cut and paste to
the same conversation on my laptop and pick it up on the phone.

3. CNBC, I use the watch lists and also love the automatic notifications so
I get my important breaking financial news.

4. Ootunes / i heart radio / radio.com / tune in pro/ XM sirius, these are
the streaming music / media apps I use. I like the XM because it syncs with my
car, the other apps are just good over the air aggregators.

5. WhatsApp: secure messaging that’s encrypted end to end. Migrating to
this away from other apps for security reasons.

6. Bria soft phone, allows me to connect to my PBX, enables me to encrypt
both the payload and signaling for my calls and has very good features that are
totally accessible. Also supports video.

7. Open VPN: allows me to connect to my own Open VPN server from my phone
so when on public WiFi or other open environments I can encrypt my
communications. Supports very long keys and SHA-512 hashing firewall feature
so very secure, especially good for traveling internationally

8. Apple Pay: love it, use it with my phone and watch. B of A is also
introducing card free ATM machines that you use your phone to authenticate.

9. Bank of America App: basic banking app

10. RSA Security: Allows me to authenticate at work. Use pin + RSA back
end to produce a code I enter when logging in that changes every 60 seconds.

11. GPGtools: Allows me to encrypt and decrypt emails securely.

12. IMAP weather Radio for weather alerts.

And as mentioned your good ol Major League Baseball app to listen to the
San Francisco Giants or if anyone asks up here the Red Socks.:)

Other than that I like the included apps like the stocks app, music, video,

Guys,

Even if I have to pay a small fee for this, I'm very much willing to do so
within reason, and am totally 100% prepared to do so.

Here is the very most basic of the situation without going into a lot of
detail. I need to send a letter to someone. The issue is, they do not check
their e-mail hardly at all. This however is a letter that needs to be written.
Again, I would much rather not go into the specifics. I will however at least
give you this much information... no. It's is not legal related in any way,
and there is absolutely nothing legally binding that says I cannot write this
person. It's nothing like that, as much as it's just that they most likely
99.999% chance will not see my e-mail. Trust me. Physically mailing a hard
copy letter would be more reliable. I definitely do have their address. The
question that I have is, I don't have a printer, and even if I did, I don't
have a very reliable way to address the envelope. I'd have to basically have
someone help me do so. The thing is, due to certain circumstances, the people
who would help me address the letter, as well as print it out for me are very
very nosy, and have been known in the past to read my mail, without my prior
concent. Yeah, I know, downright illegal. I'm not even touching that one.
The point is of this message, does anyone know of a web site which would be
accessible with Voiceover that I could use to either A, type my letter directly
into the web site, or B, upload it as a word document, or text document, etc.
then type the address to be sent to, pay a small printing/shipping cost,
securely check out, then have this service basically print and mail the letter
on my behalf. I'd say on average, this letter won't be more than probably 2,
maybe! pushing it, 2 and a half 8 by 11 pages long. We're not talking a huge
huge lengthy letter here.

I don't have very good access to a public library nor post office to ask for
help. I'm kind a in a rural area. Otherwise, I would.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Chris.

2014-07-02 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

You might try the free version of the Magicjack app. It's a bit clunky but
I've used it on my iPod Touch successfully on my WIFI at home.

It's only works in the U.S. and Canada.

HTH,

Dan

Camfind app for IOS

2014-01-23 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

There has been some buzz about an Android app similar to Tap-tap-see called
Camfind. It turns out that there is an IOS version available as well. I've
tried it with my Ipod Touch 3G with very good results. It's free so give it
a try.

Regards,

Dan

iPod Touch 3G and Email from att.net

2013-12-13 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

I recently received email from ATT saying that I had to update my email
client settings by December 11 or I wouldn't be able to send or get email.
I ran their update program on my PC without trouble. However, since
December 11, I haven't been able to send or get email on my iPod Touch. I
get an error message that the servers are not responding. ATT technical
support was not any help. Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas
would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

Point Finder equivalent for IOS

2013-10-03 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

There's an Android app called Point Finder that allows the user to mark and
name a specific point using GPS. For example, you can mark the intersection
of two sidewalks and the app will guide you back to that point. I seem to
recall a discussion of an IOS app that did the same thing. Is there such a
critter?

Thanks,

Dan

Ipod 4 and App store problem

2013-08-06 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

I have an Ipod 4 32GB. When I select a category in the App store, no apps
appear on the screen. The area between the category heading and the
selections at the bottom, Featured, Top Charts, Genius, Search and Updates,
is blank. Apps appear if Top Charts is selected but nothing in any
category.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Regards,

Dan

Ipod Touch 4G Question

2013-01-16 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

Is there a way to connect an audio cassette player to an Ipod Touch 4G and
record the content as an MP3? I have a bunch of non-commercial cassettes
that I would like to preserve as MP3's.

Thanks,

Dan

Media Streaming Devices and IOS

2012-12-12 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

I have noticed that there are several media streaming devices from
manufactureres other than Apple. Some of them have IOS apps that let you
use an Iphone or, presumably, an Ipod touch as a remote control. Does
anyone on the list know if any are accessible with Voiceover?

Thanks,

Dan

Ipod Touch Sync Problems

2012-03-08 Thread Dan Rathburn
Hello,

I have an Ipod Touch 4G 32GB and Itunes for the PC. Whenever I try to sync,
Itunes gets to "step 3 of 7" and won't proceed any further. I have to restart
the computer to get out of Itunes. I'm running WE 7.5.3 on a Windows 7 HP
laptop.

I haven't upgraded to 5.1 or Itunes 10.6 yet.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Dan
