can't set the main user as an auto login in login options on a new iMac

2015-05-06 Thread Dean Adams
Hi There,
I have been trying to help a frind setup his new mac the initial setup
was done at the apple shop where he bought his new Imac file vault is turned
Off as this was the first thing we checked after calling apple help desk . With
the main user logged in adn going to system preferences and users and groups
and login options and auto login for the drop down menu only comes up with
either none or guest , I am stumped how to get his main user as an option in
the login options for auto login . So if anyone has a solution I would be very
grateful i have searched google and only found how to set a user for auto login
.

changing the default incoming call sound for Skype on a mac

2014-10-25 Thread Dean Adams
Hi All,
Just incase you may not like the default sound that skkype uses for its
event’s like incoming call you can change it with the following method you will
have to have a sound with an M 4 A extension which can be from you ringtones by
making a copy of it and changeing the exxtension by pressing edit and changing
the extension from m 4 R to M 34 A .

Changing the default ringing tone in Skype for the mac

1: go to the Skype preferences with command comma
2: once preferences is open go to the notifications press VO space bar to
select. stop interacting with the tool bar VO right arrow to details and event
there is an event called incoming call , VO right arrow incoming call which is
just after play sound VO space bar to bring up the sound selection menu .
3: Go to the bottom of that list and there is an add slash remove button V O
space bar to select a new window comes up if you have not added any new sounds
the table will be empty .
4: VO right arrow to the add button then navigate to the sidebar interact with
VO shift down arrow navigate to the music or wherever you store any music or
sounds with an m4a extension select the one you want then stop interacting and
VO right arrow to the open button .then VO right arrow to the done button.
5: Now you will have a sound to choose from instead of the normal default one,
you can do this for any of the events .
6: Just to finish if you have any ringtones with an m 4 r extension just copy
it to a different folder and press edit on it and change the extension from M 4
R to M4 A.

Hi Eugenia,
I have the Iphone users guide but it doesn't list all the voice over

Re: New Member and a question

2013-11-17 Thread Dean Adams
Hi George,
Here is the instructions you wanted I found this in the mail archives

Move vo to the mailbox in the favorites bar, then route the mouse
there (vo-cmd-f5). Disable cursor tracking with vo-shift-f3, then lock
the mouse down with vo-cmd-shift-space. Move vo to somewhere in the
mail window that has nothing in it, like a splitter, and route the
mouse again, then unlock the mouse button with another press of
vo-cmd-shift-space. That should do it, but if it fails, close Mail and
re-open it, then try again. Also, don't forget to turn cursor tracking
back on with vo-shift-f3.

Re: add a copy to device menu in iTunes

2013-10-31 Thread Dean Adams
Hi Nicolas ,
If you are manually managing your music the only way to get music onto
your Idevice is to copy and paste it from your music library I have over 250 gb
of music so automatically syncing all music is not an option . I do not use
playlists .
Any suggestion is well worth considering if it makes life easier.

add a copy to device menu in iTunes

Hi All,
I have an idea for apple for I tunes when you are in your music books
etc library and you have selected media to copy to your I device if instead of
copyuing and pasting to your Iphone or Ipad or Ipod if they could add a copy to
device menu choice when you are still in the library that you are copying the
media from you would not have to move out of that library until you have
finished copying media to your chosen device . I have been told by apple they
need as many other people to suggest this menu addition to put forward to its
software engineerrs so if you like me think it is a good please contact apple

Re: Saving Files in TextEdit

2012-08-12 Thread Dean Adams
Hi Jeff,
If you want to save files into a different place other than icloud V O
space bar when it says icloud and arrow down to say documents then V O left
arrow till it says disclosure button unchecked and V O space bar to check it
then you have the ability to get to the side bar table and other folders in the
browse area select the folder where you want to save your file and V O right
arrow to the save button. For some reason apple have made the choice the have
icloud as the default place to save files to .

Re: Just about to give up!

2012-05-03 Thread Dean Adams
Hi Veronica,
I know this may seem a silly question are you using the outgoing mail
server for your service provider for your internet connection for the smtp
outgoing mail server because any mail will not send if you have not set your
outgoing mail server as your internet service providers mail outgoing server
e.g if you are using most mail server it will be
mail.service_Providers_name.com for your incoming and outgoing mail server
unless the mail server is out of the ordinary. Just a thought Oh and the ports
for incoming pop3 is 110 and outgoing smtp is port 25.

Re: Setting to not automatically add files to iTunes library.

2012-04-30 Thread Dean Adams
Hi ,
Just to add to what scott has said about using vlc player to play your
music movies etc you can change the default player for the music if you wish by
going to a music file and press command I to get the info for the file navigate
to the open with disclosure triangle press the space bar to expand vo right
arrow to where it says itunes app pop up button and arrow down to vlc player
that is if you have installed vlc player press vo space bar to select then you
will get a warning you don't have permission to change access to this document
only do you want to change permission to access this document with an extension
of mp3 to open with vlc player then navigate to continue this type of file will
then open with vlc player unless you revert your selection .

Re: WIFI Printers?

2012-04-23 Thread Dean Adams
Hi Kawal,
I bought an Hp Photosmart 5510 wireless printer you can run the setup
from the install application I had to download newer drivers from hp as the
ones that came with the printer did not support Lion 10.7.3 but easy to setup
and I have got it running on my windows 7 ultimate virtual machine as well for
openbook. It can be connected via usb also and comes with usb cable. The
Drivers are okay for windows xp and 7.

Hi Esther,
I have had issues with our service provider for our internet connection
and out internet went down for 8 hours yesterday I checked today and found that
I now can connect to the server I have tried to connect with so I had all the
settings correct because I just checked a few minutes ago and it connected in
seconds very cool. The server is a linux server not a windows one. I checked
the other two servers I upload to and they all connect also so it was down to
our very poor service provider Called engin in australia. Many thanks for
replying with the excellent help as always .

Hi Esther,
I have tried both trial versions of expand drive and webdrive and for
some reason I can not login to a server I up load to on a regular basis I
checked on my windows laptop and with winscp it logins straight away. I have
entered the domain and usersname and password and port number is there a
different way details for example for the domain do you have to put the whole
domain name e.g. http://www.domain.org or do you just put the domain.org like I
have done in win scp I have changed the port number as the administrator for
this server has portforwarded port 22 to a different port they use ssh so I
have chosen sftp any ideas whey I am not able to login.

I have found most apps that I need for my tasks on the new macbook pro

Win scp so I can ssh into several servers I have to upload files to on a

I am having problems selecting test in safari since upgrading to 10.7.3

2012-02-20 Thread Dean Adams
Hi All,
I have tried several things to select text in safari if I only want
certain sections of the text in a website I can't just shift and right arrow to
select the text I want I have had to copy all the text on the website and paste
iit into text edit and remove the stuff I don't want . Is there a simpler way
of only selecting the text I want verses having to copy all text on a website
and then removing the stuff I don't want. Any help with this would be much
appreciated . I am having a ball with this new macbook pro after many years of
using my old power book G4 which still works .

Re: Keyboard shortcuts

2012-02-13 Thread Dean Adams
Hi Jurgen,
You can assign program short cuts by using the keyboard commanders in
voice over utility and choose commanders and stop interacting and VO right
arrow to keyboard and then VO Space bar and then VO right arrow to the check
box that says use keyboard comanders and press Vo Space bar then Vo right arrow
to the keyboard commanders table where you can assign quick keys to open your
most used programs. You will find ones there for safari and mail by default the
keyboard commanders uses the right option key then a key of your own choosing,
but there are already some being used like s and the right option key for
safari and m and the right option key for mail. First interact with the
keyboard commanders table and check what keys are being used you can Vo up and
down arrow to check which keys are already being used and to check which
actions are being activated by VO right arrow to the action for each key so for
example once you have interacted with the commanders table VO up and down arrow
till it says the S key then VO right arrow till it says command open program
safari, you can only use one key for each action. To add another action for two
key press actions do the following.
Stop interacting with the keyboard commanders table and VO right arrow to the
add button it will then automatically land you on the keyboard commanders table
press the key you want to use like I use the letter e for text edit, then you
have to interact with the keyboard commanders table where you have just put the
e for text edit then make sure you are on the e in the table then VO right
arrow to the next section which is command menu press VO Space bar and then VO
down Arrow till it says custom commands VO right arrow it will say open program
press VO Space bar then VO right arrow till you get to the browse area then
interact and find text edit stop interacting and then VO right arrow to the
Open default button and there you go you have created a two key short cut to
text edit . So to go to text edit you only have to press the right option key
and the E key . You can do this for as many times as you want but you can only
use 1 letter for each operation . I have done this for skype text edit Vlc
player mac mail and safari and DVD player.
Hope this is not to long winded .

Labeliing Buttons in Navigons Points of interest where 3 buttons are not labeled on your Iphone or Ipad

2011-11-16 Thread Dean Adams

Hi Everyone,
Here is a way to label buttons that are not labeled on your
Iphone or Ipad in particular Navigons Points of Interest section
where 3 buttons are not labled.
In Navigon go to the search for POI button and then single flick to
the first unlabled button which is petrol stations do a two double
finger tap and hold and it will beep several times and then a text
edit field comes up and put petrol stations and then flick to save
and now that button is labeled. Now flick to the second unlabeled
button which is rest areas do the same as previously described but
this label is Rest Areas. Then flick to the last of the three
unlabled buttons and it is Food do the same as first described. If
you have any trouble doing this i can run you through doing this easy
process over skype.
Woo Hoo Labeling our own buttons once you know what the button is for
I just double tapped on the button and found out what it was and then
went back and labeled it.

Regards Dean

How do you people manage to find out which alphabet is which on a touchscreen?
You can easily locate all the keys on a normal keyboard after a bit of
practice, but how can you do that on a device which has a touchscreen?

Steps on how to download the lion Installer if you already have lion installed

2011-10-24 Thread Dean Adams

Hi Everyone,
I am trying to help a friend of mine to download and burn a
recovery install DVD for lion which he has already installed which
was installed when it was purchased. When he goes to the app store it
says to delete a file before he can download the installer but it
does not say which file to delete. I have the steps on how to get the
dmg file out of the installer but I need to be able to get around the
problem of being able to download the installer to start with so if
anyone can give me the steps to get around this problem with the app
store so my friend can download the installer.

imported his address book into outlook 2003 from outlook express and
then synced it to his iphone and then synced it to mac mail if that

Re: Wireless has stopped working

2010-03-04 Thread Dean Adams

Hi Esther,
You wouldn't know it but the power book stopped working all
together I took the battery out and the memory and left it for a will
will the battery was out I took out the wireless card and reseated it
and put the battery and memory back in a it started up again and the
wireless is working again so many thanks for the heads up . Once day
I hope to get a newer macbook which would be nice but this one does
most of what I like to do .

Many Thanks Dean

not fully connecting because it was no longer firmly seated all the
way into the slot. (Since laptops get carried around a lot, these
cards can get jostled over time). I took it into the genius bar at
my local Apple Store, and they just reseated the card in the slot
and everything worked again. Took about 5 minutes, no charges, and
they cleaned my screen and keyboard just as a service. You could
probably check this yourself if you had to, but there's a small
metal flap that locks down into position, and there are also some
wires connected to the AirPort card and a ribbon cable that I didn't
want to damage in trying to push things back to reseat the card into
the slot. So I had the Apple Store folks look this over. It's very
fast for them to do the fix if the card has come loose. But you have
to push back the ribbon cable attached to the card, and make sure
that none of the wires has snagged when you push down the metal flap
and close things up, so I'd recommend that you have one of the Apple
Store people do this check if it's easy for you to get to a store.

I also found out during this visit that you can schedule
appointments for the Genius Bar at your local Apple retail store
through an online web form. The process is entirely
accessible. Here's a link to an old post that described how to do this:

(Accessibile Web Reservations with your local Apple Store)

I think this pretty much still works as outlined.

Good luck, and let us know how this turns out. My guess is that
your wireless card is simply not flush in the slot any more, which
is why no device shows up now. At least, that's what happened in my case.

Cheers,

Esther

Hey Joe,
Please send me the info on the iringer and the Iphone email

down to 30 seconds but it said that it was not able to convert it to
a ringtone for some reason even though it was in acc format for the
apple products. I found iringer and have created a test ringtone and
sent it to my son who has an iphone 3gs so fingers crossed.

will convert it and add it to iTunes in the correct place for you. Then all
you need to do is hook your IPhone to iTunes check the ringtones you want on
your phone and sync it. If need the site to iringer I will be glad to give

give that to you also.

If you jail break your IPhone, I believe you can then use your own mp3 files
as ring tones.

But I'm not sure how much jail breaking the device screws up the workings
for VO. It does in a few cases at least it did on a friend of mines device.
Some of his apps no longer worked correctly .

the only thing that I don't like so far is the fact that you can't use you

for the Iphone that gets around this problem and what is the general

Can I get skype to announce incoming chat's

2009-11-23 Thread Dean Adams
Hey All,
I have not posted for a will but I updated my skype to the
latest version and hoped that it would announce chats as I type and
send messages with my friends but have to use the use the voiceover
keys and interact with the chat box but it takes ages to get to the
last message is there a way to get skype to announce each message as
it comes through instead of each time having to get to the last chat
buy interacting with the chat area and does anyone know if skype or
voice will get around this problem.

Hey Cara,
Please put me on both lists please as having the flexability

what I need being a new mac user the more information I can get and

Re: on topic facebook question

2009-03-15 Thread Dean Adams
Hey Max,
I was using facebook with voice over with some success but
now they have changed the way the page is and I am finding it harder
to use to the point of giving up which I am dissapointed with as it
has been good to keep in touch with both friends and family so if
there is anyone who is an expert with the new facebook and is able to
use it with voice over please let us know.

uninstalling safari 4 beta after having problems

2009-03-11 Thread Dean Adams
Hey All,
After installing safari 4 beta and trying it and found that
it caused all sorts of problems in webpages and mail I have had to
uninstall safari 4 beta and return it back to version 3 and all is
back to normal now I am using a Powerbook G4 with 768mb of ram and
soon to update the memory to 1.2GB of ram after searching to net and
using dave's webpage suggestion I have come across maxfixit.com.au
and they have a great rang of upgrades from hard drives to memory. I
am using an external usb dvd burner which is a lg usb dvd burner,
still getting used to Vo and the way the mac works but getting there gradually.

time zone

2009-03-07 Thread Dean Adams
Hey Eliza,
I had to get my son to change the time zone as I couldn't
find a way with VO to change it so if you have one of those kind
sighted animals get them to fix it up for you unless someone has a
way that I couldn't find to change it.

Iwork and Ilife info

2009-03-06 Thread Dean Adams
Hey All,
After all your helpful info on iwork and Ilife I have now
purchased Iwork and will try to go up to our local mac store and
check if they have Ilife installed and check if they will let me have
a play with the different parts of it well you can't hurt to ask can
you grin :) I am gradually getting used to my Mac PowerBook G4 I
would like to add more ram to it as it only has 768 mb of ram and as
far as I can find out I can change the 512mb chip for a 1Gig chip to
take my ram up to 1.2 gig of ram so will investigate on some ram
prices on the net this week.
