Re: Is it possible to rename a photo or video?

2016-03-13 Thread Josh Smith
I do not know if it will work or not, but you can try a to finger double tap
and hold on the picture. This may or may not bring up the option to relabel.
This is the only thing I can think of to try.

 Hello All,

I am posting this question to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
 list.

 My primary question:
Is the audio description track included when renting a movie from iTunes?
 or
must one purchase the movie in order to receive the audio description
 track.

 My secondary question:
If a movie debuted with an audio description track in the theater, does it
follow that the movie will include that track in the iTunes store version
 of
 the movie?

 Here's my situation:
Last summer I saw the movie entitled "Edge of Tomorrow", in the theater,
complete with audio description. To me, it was a fabulous movie. Just so
you know, the film is now marketed and sold under the title, "Live die
 Repeat".

A couple of days ago, a sighted friend of mine rented Live die Repeat, from
the iTunes Store. She watched it on her iPad. Even though many titles, in
the iTunes Store, are not listed as having audio description, I was hoping
that, like so many others, given that the film was released with audio
description in the theater, the track would be included on the download.

According to her, she could not hear any audio description despite having
the settings on her iPad configured correctly.

I should probably add that, to my dismay, I discovered that the DVD copy of
this title, I purchased when it was first made available, did not include
 the audio description track, either.

I would so much like to enjoy this movie again but I fear, that, unless I
can locate a version that includes the audio description track, I will not
be able to relive the experience of "Edge of Tomorrow".

 All replies most welcomed.

Re: messages in IOS 9?

2015-10-15 Thread Josh
Hello Donna,
I did not see any responses to your message. I also am experiencing
the issue. I will add one contact and then if I do manage to get the
add button to show up then if I go and add someone else then it closes
out the message I was composing and opens up previous messages with
the one recipient. I have not found a work around to get multiple
contacts in one message at this point in time. However, if you find a
work around please report back to the list. I use this feature quite
frequently and hate to see that it is broken for the time being.

Re: IOS 9 impressions?

2015-09-19 Thread Josh
Hello all following this thred,
I wrote to report this issue to Apple and received feedback
regarding how to work around it. There is apparently two ways and as
one poster points out here possibly a third way. Apple support says go
to "settings>general>accessibility>keyboard" When in keyboard they
suggest to turn off lowercase keys. This will take some time getting
use to as it appears to lock it in uppercase and in order to get it
out of uppercase you have to remember to tap on the shift key. The
alternate method that Apple recommends is to start typing the message
and when you need to lock shift in capslock mode tap the shift key and
get it into uppercase mode then use the roter and once you are on
action flick up or down till you get to capslock. They say they are
looking into it though.

Re: Need Unsubscribe and Subscribe Information

2015-09-16 Thread Josh
Tim, Jamie, and others,
Thank you all for your responses regarding mass deletes using Gmail.
Additionally, thank you for pointing me to the unsubscribe information
which I was aware of, but when I figure out how to do a mass delete
and I want to rejoin I do not have that information at the bottom of
the list. If I recall the unsubscribe link does not give me the
address either so that may be why I had requested the unsubscribe
information. It probably would be much simpler if I were using Apple
Mail to do a mass delete, but unfortunately I am using Internet
Explorer to access my Gmail directly. At one time I had an option to
do a mass delete using the Gmail client, but in their most recent
update I lost that ability or so it seems. Take care and again thank
you for trying to help.

I am going to have to unsubscribe due to changes that Google has
made. I want to come back when I find a more efficient email than what
I currently have. With Google's latest change I can no longer mass
delete emails once I have looked through them. I have to go to each
one and select it. I may be overlooking something and if I am I hope
someone can enlighten me, but for now if I can get the subscribe and
unsubscribe information that would be great.

Developing an App

2015-04-24 Thread Josh
Hello All,

I need help finding an accessible program that will allow me to develop
apps. I have never done this so when I Googled the process I received tons
of results, but nothing saying whether it was accessible or not. Can anyone
direct me to where I would go to either listen to a step-by-step
demonstration on creating an app or somewhere that is going to provide
detailed instructions. Alternatively, if someone has the knowledge that they
would be willing to share with me regarding how they create apps on list or
off list on developing this app, read below for description, then I would
love to hear the ideas. Offlist address:

lawdog...@comcast.net

Description of what I am wanting to do:

I am looking to develop an app for my institution where I can have people
post anonymous questions to the app and have others respond to the
questions. The disability department there are concerned that not everyone
is receiving the attention that they need due to not wanting to identify
themselves as having a disability. I feel that the app will accomplish this
goal. There apps out there like I am wanting to create such as YikYak, but
the rules will not be as liberal on the app I am wanting to create as they
are on YikYak. Thank you all for any advice you can offer on this matter.

Flash Players

My son was playing on the new iMac the other day and said he was unable

around the app store on the computer today searching for just flash players

texts to purchase. One time I got a Shazam app that popped up in the search
results, but no actual flash player. Will the HTML 5 that Chris talked about

sure if it will work or not. Any help with this matter will be greatly

Hi Josh, I don't know what that option might be, but I think the reality is
that iCloud services are becoming increasingly personal. So it makes sense
to have a collective ID for the store, but a separate ID for each
individual. You could always sign him out of iMessage I guess, but then he
wouldn't be able to use the feature at all.

Hi Josh, you could all continue to use the same Apple ID for the Store, but
each have different Apple IDs for all other services such as iCloud,
FaceTime and iMessage. Or simply create a new Apple ID for your son for
these other services, and sign him in to it.

Alternatively, Apple has announced that when iOS 8 comes out, it will be
introducing a new feature called Family Sharing. This allows multiple Apple
IDs to share the same content. So you could set up a new Apple ID for your
son on his iPad, then next month when iOS 8 comes out, add him to a Family
Sharing group in which you or your wife are the Family Organiser. That way
there is o need to purchase the apps again.

I have an entire chapter on how to do this in my book, iOS 8 Without the
Eye, which will be released the same day iOS 8 is.

For now though, giving your son his own ID for iCloud services while keeping
the existing one for the store will fix the problem.

Information Transferring Across Devices

2014-07-15 Thread Josh
Hello Everyone,

We have just recently noticed that my wife's phone, my phone, and the
iPad are transferring information between them. This is great for most
things, but there is a little one here that doesn't need to be privy to
everything that my wife and I have stored in our phones. The little one is
allowed to use the iPad and it would be great if the information he was
compiling transferred to our phones, but not the other way around.

I imagine that if we want the information that he is compiling to
transfer to our phone we will have to allow our information to transfer to
the iPad. I do recall there was a setting that allowed me to stop the
syncing of information between the iPod Touch my dad is using and the things
that were showing up in my phone. I just cannot recall what the setting is
so if anyone can assist with this setting change I would greatly appreciate
the help.

Amazon and Recorders

2014-07-11 Thread Josh
My wife and I purchased a new iPad last night for purposes of using it for
our college classes. She wants to use e textbooks and we downloaded the
Kindle application in order to do this. The first question is has anyone
used Amazon for these purposes or what application would you all use in
order to accomplish this?

Another thing we noticed last night after the purchase was made, was that
there is no voice memos application. I don't see this as a major problem
because although it does a good job with recordings I imagine that there are
better apps out there for recording and that will allow you to put them on
your computer. So, my second question is what recording applications are out
there that would allow a person to record an entire class lecture providing
there is enough room on the device and also allow you to transfer them to a
computer? Any help in guiding me with the two questions presented here will
be greatly appreciated.

Re: Stability of the Mac

The one thing I will say mac has going for it among its many
advantages, is the ability to walk up to any mac and it just works.
Amazing as long as it has 10.4 or above which most do nowadays. A
little different with the iMac as I've just experienced (from the
laptop prospective) but definitely doable.

The one thing I don't like about it is that it does not support Rich text
format files, this may seem a little picky but I think that a word processor
such as pages should at least be able to support what I think is a pretty basic
file format.

Hi, If I may, and no disrespect, but a computer is still needed for some things
that a tablet or smart phone cannot currently do. Having said that, I will give
you that these devices can do a heck of a lot more than they could several
years ago.

Re: Stability of the Mac

2014-04-01 Thread Josh Gregory
Yes, the Mac seems to be a lot more stable. I don't know if it was the laptop I
had or what, but every time you would have to reboot it, you weren't sure if it
would come back. Not going to really go into that but let's just say it didn't
work a lot of the time. And as long as you're not into audio games and things
like that, the Mac is definitely a good choice and very stable.

Draconis Entertainment Releases mini title for Mac OS X – SilverDollar

2013-01-11 Thread Josh de Lioncourt
Howdy partner, and welcome to the Silver Dollar Saloon!

Draconis Entertainment revisits the popular saloon of the old west featured in
many of its audio games for the blind and visually impaired with a new mini
title for Mac OS X! (Coming later to Windows PC's.)

Primarily intended for the blind and visually impaired, SilverDollar offers
three mini games that serve as both a great introduction to audio games for new
players, and addictive fun for experienced ones.

SilverDollar has no visual elements. Use your fingers, ears, and wits to engage
in some western fun.

So put on your 10 gallon hat, partner, and get into a little trouble at the old
west's premier watering hole for outlaws and gunslingers alike.

• Start a brawl with the Silver Dollar's resident tough guy.
• Prove yourself a gunslinger by testing your shooting skills, blasting flying
crockery out of the air.
• Spend a little time at the one-armed bandit.
• Features many favorite characters from previous Draconis titles, including
Old Man Stanley.
• Audio hints to help newcomers navigate the game menus with their ears.
• In app instructions for all the mini games.

Other mini games are planned for future updates. Have something you'd like to
see? Let us know.

SilverDollar is available in the Mac App Store for $1.99 USD at the following
link:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/silverdollar/id591523274?mt=12

We are open to questions on this title, or Draconis in general. As always, we
don't comment on unannounced titles, but we will do our best to answer
questions.

ChangeReaction 2.0.4 with fixes for some Snow Leopard users is now available

2012-12-20 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

Last week, Stacey reported a problem running ChangeReaction 2.0.2 on her Snow
Leopard machine. With her help, and the help of one of our beta testers, we
managed to track down the problem, and an update which address this problem and
another is now available in the Mac App Store.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/changereaction/id578086731?mt=12

If you do not see version 2.0.4 in the App Store, it may not have hit the store
of your area yet, but should very soon.

Thanks all.

Re: Update on ChangeReaction and Stacey's Issue

2012-12-14 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

Though it has been a while, ChangeReaction for Windows did get numerous updates
with bug fixes and such. The legacy ESP Softworks code was unwieldy and
difficult to work with. We've designed our new game engine to make it much
easier to update apps, and of course the Mac App Store helps with this, too.

Update on ChangeReaction and Stacey's Issue

2012-12-13 Thread Josh de Lioncourt
Hi all,

We have an update pending review for ChangeReaction, so as soon as Apple
approves it, it will be available.

With Stacey's help, as well as the help of one of our beta testers, we were
able to find the problem that occurs on some older Macs running Snow Leopard,
and it is fixed now, along with another very minor bug that someone found. (You
can pause the game during the intro sequence leading up to the starting pistol,
which causes problems as there is nothing to pause yet at that point.)

Thanks to Stacey, and we here at Draconis hope that everyone is enjoying the
game. There are more titles to come, and your support means the world, as it
will continue to allow us to make great games.

2012-12-12 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

Yes, you have a 64-bit Mac. If you are running Lion or Mountain Lion, this
isn't even a problem you need to worry about, because those versions of the OS
only run on 64 bit.

For those interested, we've gotten the error report from Stacey, tracked down
the problem which only occurs on some older Macs running Snow Leopard, and are
in the process of preparing an update to submit to Apple.

Yes, that makes it 64 bit.

Email me at overl...@lioncourt.com, and please send the text of the error
message you are getting. If you focus VoiceOver on the text of the error
message, then press VO-Shift-C before doing anything else, it will copy it to
the clipboard and you can paste it into the email with Command-V.

2012-12-12 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

To check if your Mac is 64 bit:

Go to Apple menu->About this Mac. In the window that appears, it will tell you
the type of processor that is in your Mac. If it is Core Solo or Core Duo, it
is 32 bit. If it is Core2 Duo, or anything later than that, it is 64 bit.

If you do have a 64 bit Mac, contact me off list and we will work with you to
find the problem.

Hi Stacey,

The game should run on Snow Leopard, though it does required a 64-bit machine.
Do you know if your Mac is 64-bit?

If you continue to have problems, you can contact me off-list, and we can try
to work through it. If it is a problem on our end, we will do our best to track
it down and release an update that corrects it for you and anyone else who may
be experiencing it.

We've worked very hard to make ChangeReaction the very best it can be, and if
there's a problem, we want to know about it and hopefully find a solution.

2012-12-12 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

The audio is at least on par with all of our old games. Technology has come a
long way int he last ten years, and it is not necessary for audio games to be
huge anymore. You can hear a sample of the game audio here:

http://dracoent.com/audio/trailers/CRTrailer.mp3

It is very possible to use compressed audio that decompresses on demand these
days for desktop machines. iOS devices are another matter, as they aren't quite
powerful enough for that yet.

2012-12-12 Thread Josh de Lioncourt
Stacey,

If you continue to have problems, you may wish to delete the app and
re-download it from the App Store. Perhaps your download was corrupted.

Before doing that, however, we do recommend trying the solutions outlined in my
previous email.

The game does not download any extra components. It is entirely self-contained.

Re: Changereaction: A new game from Draconess intertainment for blind in the Mac app store

2012-12-12 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

The alert letting you know that this is an audio game, etc, only appears the
first time you launch the game.

it is possible that VoiceOver did not correctly put focus on the initial dialog
box. If this is the case, one of the following may fix the problem for you:

• Command-tab into the ChangeReaction app
• Use VO-F1 twice to bring up the list of apps, and choose the alert dialog
window from the ChangeReaction app
• If the ChangeReaction app itself has focus, use VO-F2 twice to bring up the
list of menus and choose the dialog box window, which is called "Open Your
Ears".

Applications are tested very rigorously by Apple, and they will not accept
non-working apps into the App Store.

The "Learn to Play" option from the main menu will teach you how to play the
currently selected game. We recommend that if you are not already familiar with
ChangeReaction from the Windows days, and it is probably a good idea even if
you are.

1. These messages are auto generated by the site. It provides an excerpt, the
length of which I cannot control. It isn't a human copying and pasting the
message into an email.

2. As the main author of the written content for the site, I'm very sorry to
hear you feel our content is so poorly written. I take a great deal of time and
put a great deal of effort into the site, and am transitioning to devoting more
resources to providing news and content. Tutorials, more podcasts, and more
written features are planned. I hope you will find some of it useful. I also
find it a little disheartening that you feel it appropriate to attack someone's
work and don't even take the time to proof read/correct an email you're sending
out to hundreds of others, which serves no purpose but to put down someone else.

3. We've gone over and over the reasons for the moderation choices we make on
these lists. We can't please everyone. We really do try to provide a good forum
and a good web site that is useful for as many people as possible.

Myself, the mods of these lists, and those of us who work on the web site are
not these terrible evil ogres some of you seem to believe we are. We all
volunteer our time for free to provide these things. We try to make them
valuable.

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread Josh de Lioncourt
I agree with Dane. I recently started using Abby FineReader, and have found it
to be an excellent solution on the Mac. It's not tailored to the visually
impaired specifically, but it does work quite well. The US retail price of Abby
FineReader is $99, and there is a trial available from their web site.

Interacting allows you to manipulate a particular control, without being forced
to view all of its content at once. For instance, have you ever looked at a
listview in Windows Explorer with the Jaws cursor? It looks like a confusing
mess of information, depending on how you have view settings. VoiceOver might
let you know that this part of the window is made up of a table or list. You
wouldn't see all the info in that list until you interacted with it. This makes
use of applications much clearer, and can be a huge time saver. It is one of
the biggest differences between VoiceOver and Windows screen readers, and for
some it is a little tough to get used to. Once you do, I believe most prefer it
to the Windows screen reader approach. I certainly do.

Yes. VoiceOver has all sorts of commands like this. Using those commands in
conjunction with the rotor makes browsing a pleasure on the Mac.

Yes. VoiceOver can be scripted using AppleScript, Automator work flows, or
really anything that can be compiled into a Mac application, which includes a
wide range of programming languages if one chooses to go that route.

The Mac ships with a ton of voices. I like Alex and Victoria best, myself.
There are also quite a few third-party voices available.

If you navigate menus with just the arrow keys, menus wrap as they do in
Windows. Only if you add the VO keys do that not wrap, and personally I don't
know why anyone would navigate a menu with the VO keys pressed. In dialogs and
other windows, you can choose to have VoiceOver wrap if you wish.

In six years as a VoiceOver user, I could probably count the number of times I
lost VoiceOver and needed to restart the whole machine on one hand. VoiceOver,
and the Mac in general, is far more stable than WIndows in my personal
experience, and more stable than Jaws in particular. In fact, Jaws's
instability led me to abandon it around 2004 or so in favor of Window-Eyes,
which was more stable for me. VoiceOver is incredibly stable, and when there
are problems, a quick cycling of VoiceOver with Command-F5 almost always fixes
the problem.

Mac menus allow you to start typing the command name instead of pressing
accelerator keys. THis means you don't have to memorize the accelerator keys
for every menu in every application. So, if you wanted "Open" in the FIle menu,
usually just pressing O takes you right there, but if there are multiple
options that start with the letter "O" you can continue typing "Open". This
works the same way as finding a file by typing part of its name in a ListView
in Windows Explorer.

Ubuntu is just that, Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop. to turn it into vinux they
run a whole bunch of automated scripts and do a little tweeking then use

Orca is the main screen reader for both ubuntu and vinux3.0. and orca, like the

other than that most things just work. Does mac use something similar to At-Spy
atspi to make its OS accessible I wonder? Reason I'm asking is because when
both mac and vinux3.0 load websites they both say html content. They also say
some other things that makes me think vinux has incorporated at least some form
of apple's universal accessibility into vinux 3.0 itself.

future of screen readers

2010-09-02 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi
Mac seems a lot like vinux in some ways. With vinux you also not only have the
screen reader, but you have a fully accessible operating system. Are there
bugs, sure but if you're willing to take the time to learn mac and vinux it is
well worth it in my opinion. I think getting a mac, or a pc running vinux just
blows windows out of the water in terms of security and stability and stuff.

future of screen readers

2010-09-02 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi guys
I personally am a big fan of the mac. I also really like vinux3.0 based on
Ubuntu. Orca is coming along nicely and its nice to use ubuntu to legally and
freely turn my pc into a mac which talks out of the box and for $5 I get voxin
to use with it. I am disappointed that gwmicro did not even mention the fact
linux distributions such as vinux and knoppix-adriane and grml exist. One of
the reasons I like vinux is because it pretty much turns any pc into a macLike
computer with the same or better security and stability just as the mac has on
it. With vinux I just plug in my braille display and it works, usb and passport
drives show up as icons on the desktop. There's no safely remove hardware. it
has a calculator, dictionary, web browser, at least two email programs, a ful
office suite including powerpoint, and that's just scratching the surface. If
you install emacs you get the gnome desktop plus the emacs audio desktop with
voxin. You can use both console and graphical modes. Don't want to remember
tons of commands? then don't worry about it, you can just copy and paste
commands into the terminal. Vinux only needs 384 mb to 512mb of ram to run. if
you plan on using vmware player and windows7 then get at least 3gb of ram.
win-xp and win98 need much much less ram. I love my mac and I love vinux3.0
equally! GwMicro doesn't seem to want to really acknowledge apple, or NVDA, or
serotek, or vinux or grml or knoppix-adriane at all.

Hi

guys don't forget about NVDA and system access by serotek. www.nvda-project.org

the unix shell and mac terminal

2010-08-27 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi
Over the past few weeks I have been running vinux 3.0 lucid in a virtual
machine and have been playing with it. And then recently I went into the
terminal on my mac in snow leopard and typed some commands and surprisingly I
find that most of the commands I can perform in vinux I can also do with the
terminal or the mac's unix shell. It's really cool. The only difference I can
see in the mac is that it uses the darwin kernel while vinux uses the linux
kernel. Oh and guys if you go into a terminal in your mac and type:
man ls
you can even read the unix man pages there. The only thing that doesn't work is
apt-get command. I'm not sure if dpkg works or not, I haven't tried it. I'll
try right now. Well guys dpkg also does not work. The mac's shell reminds me
very much of vinux 3.0 lucid though.
If you type
uname -a
it will tell you the kernel version among other things.
If you type:
man ls
it will bring up the man page for the ls list directory command. to quit the
man pages just press the letter q,. To close terminal hit command q. You can
even hit tab and it will autocomplete commands for you. I imagine the unix
shell is very powerful, even on the mac. And I'm glad mac uses the bash shell.
Vinux uses it too. I doubt voxin would work on the mac since voxin I think is
compiled for the linux kernel and not the darwin version10 kernel.

download linked file in mail

2010-08-26 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi
Someone sent me a file through dropbox. I hit control option shift m and hit
enter on download linked file. I can see in my downloads folder that its
downloading but is there a way I can get to a download progress window in mail?
or does it just download linked files in the background? I'll go into my
downloads folder and check the table to see if the file size is increasing but
I wish I could sit the vo cursor on a progress bar of some kind to watch the
download progress like I do in safari.

converting audible books

2010-07-11 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi

Goldwave will still convert them if you first deactivate your audible manager
then uninstall it, then install windows media player filter and k-lite mega
codec pack. open audible book in gold wave, enter audible user name , password,
goldwave opens book, then save as mp3. will not convert .aax new audible
extreme format books. to do that you'll have to burn to physical cd or iso file
then either rip cd to mp3 or mount iso file as another drive and rip to mp3,
then unmount and delete iso or isos.

macbook randomly freezes windows7 64bit bootcamp

2010-07-10 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi

my macbook pro randomly freezes with windows7 64bit installed with bootcamp all

I cannot figure out where to go to download the file to make it download. Can
someone please help. I was told the random freezing of windows7 64bit pro on
the new 2010 macbook pros is due to an nvidia driver issue and that the file I
should be able to get from this site includes a modified .inf file that will
fix the issue for me once installed.

please help if you can.

help with mac windows7 and bootcamp

2010-07-09 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi

I am using the latest nvda snapshot with windows7 64bit. it is running on a
macbook pro installed using bootcamp. First question is, for some reason to get
standard use of the function keys I gotta hold down the fn key while pressing
the f keys. Second, I boot up into windows, hit caps lock n, it says nvda menu,
but when I arrow down to go into the menus the menus disappear and I'm put back
on the desktop. Do I have to wait awhile before I can use nvda? also why isn't
nvda showing up in the system tray? This is my first time with windows7. Oh and
also for some reason we did install bootcamp on the windows side because I
needed or it has drivers windows needs, but the only way I can get full use of
my sound is by using USB headphones. When I use the built in laptop speakers I
can barely hear nvda and other sounds. Thanks for any help you can provide on
