that as don’t really want to get into the window’s is better than the mac and

Re: Accessible remote login

2015-08-30 Thread 'Kevin Cussick' via MacVisionaries
Hi, I don’t know how it will be done but if you go to the blind bargains site
I am sure you will find the podcast I suspect that they do a similar sort of
thing to the nada remote. this does not send any audio down the pipe if you
use speak you get speak or what ever other speech you use that’s what you get,
I love nada remote this has enabled me to work on other folks computers and
not have to even leave the house. the only thing I would love to see happen one
day is some sort of file transferee I am sorry think I may have miss spelled
that last word, anyway I am sure you will know what I mean, you can push
text to and from the clipboard from 1 machine to the next but if I have a file
I want to install on the other box I have to tell the other person to download
it first or set up a drop box folder with them but maybe one day this might
come maybe not as it might use a bit of band width anyway that is about it I
hope this does happen for voice over as for the blind computer assister nada
remote has been a fantastic tool in the tool box.

*Subject:*My I O S 1 Day Challenge, Part 1
So guys, maybe I am a bit of an extremest, however I have decided to
take a major challenge upon myself. So many people have said that I
O S is at a point where it could almost serve as a production based
computer setup for some people. I decided, techy as I am, to take
this challenge and see if that is really the case for my daily
lifestyle. Does it mean that I am going to use I O S exclusively
from this point forward, and never use a computer again? Hell! no!
All I'm saying is, I wanted to really truely give the mobile world a
fair chance, and really take it to the extreme.
Therefore, for the next 24 hours, I am trying to stay off my pc as
much as humanly possible. Obviously, if a customer of mine needs
something done that I find isn't working with I O S, then I'll hop on
my mac or my PC, and get it done, but even then, I won't do so unless
it winds up being a very very last resort. I really am open-minded
about wanting to try this and really see if I truely can manage with
only a mobile device, be it my IPhone, or my IPad to do this.
This said, here is the first challenge I've hit. I know that being
you all won't be able to see what I'm seeing first hand, it's going
to make things a bit difficult, but trust me when I say, this was a
nightmare!
I am running a droplet on Digital Ocean of UBuntu 14.04 64 bit,
Server. On here, I have followed the instructions posted by Nerd
Vittles and have installed Asterisk's Incredible PBX. Tonight, I
wanted to add an entry to my main company IVR. So, I grabbed my
IPad, and went to the FreePBX admin web interface. I have IPTables
installed locking it down to my IP address, so even if I was to give
you all the URL to go to, it wouldn't work for you guys. Just take
my word for this. The page loaded just fine, but first off, I saw
the link on this page to log into the ISynthany server, if I had one
configured, which I don't. I also saw the button to load the user
panel login screen. When I double tapped on this button however, I
was presented with a page telling me that Safari was unable to
connect. I know this is baloni, as both my windows PC, as well as
all 3 of my macs can connect with absolutely no problem to that page.
So, I backed myself out, back to the main FreePBX page, and proceeded
to look for the link/button to log into the admin panel. Try as I
may however, the link was nowhere to be found. I know where the link
should be on the page, but neither touch exploration nor flicking
would focus it. Now, to be fair, let me say this. I do not know if
the link was visibly there on the screen. If I had to guess based on

It is true that with a mini, you must buy a keyboard and speakers. And I think
you still need a monitor, although those are cheap, and if he has a Windows

The cost of the mini would probably come up to be about the cost of an air if
you add those things in, depending on the price of the speakers of course. You
would end up with better speakers, of course. You would also have the
possibility of getting a full keyboard including the keypad, which does not
come on the air. That gives you two sets of complete arrow keys plus the keypad
which you can use with the keypad commander. Also, the mini is more powerful
than the air, that is better processor more RAM more storage. So, unless
portability is a big deal, I think the mini is a better thing. Maybe I'm

Oh my heavens, yes! The new mac mini's are incredibly! and I do mean
incredibly! well priced. If memory serves correct, an I5 4GB ram,
5200RPM mac mini is somewhere in the ballpark of $580 before tax.
And yes, it would come with Yosemite. Now, beware, it doesn't come
with a monitor, speakers, a mouse, or keyboard. You'd have to buy
those separetly, however, you can get a fairly decently cheap monitor
for just over $100. In fact, what I've! actually done is to get a
cheap little flat pannel television with HDMI. Then, I just ran the
mac directly into it, then set the source on the TV to HDMI, and
boom! There you go! A very nice monitor, and, the sound audio even
will be piped through the TV speakers, eliminating the need for
seperet PC speakers. Now, that said, if you're gonna do audio
production stuff, I don't know how serious you are about that side of
music production, but if you're a pro, like me, then obviously,
you're going to want to get a higher end audio interface, and maybe
even a control surface. The surface isn't required, but it certainly
bigtime will help. The interface however would almost definitely be
a given. One interface I really really love, it's not being made any
longer, but search Amazon, or EBay or the like, as I'm positivbe! you
could find one still new unboxed, is the M-Audio Fasttrack C400.
It's even very portable and quite accessible. If you find one, I'd
be happy to help you set it up over Facetime, Skype, or the like. It
would be a pleasure to do so. Also, obviously, if you're really
serious about this, I'd look into a pare of good studio monitors.

It really does just depend on how far you want to take things.

Then, of corse, though Logic X is doable, dont' get me wrong, the
accessibility isn't probably going to be the most ideal. Let me be
very clear, so I don't get my ass kicked. Logic does? work, yes,
but! you will be somewhat limited.

Though way more expensive, I'll admit, ProTools definitely! is the
way you'd wanna go.

Hi!
I am about to buy a new mac soon this year.
But i really don't know what to buy which fits my needs.
I will search for some funding to have the ability to buy a new one.
So i guess there wont be no mac pro which anyway is a bit overkill even though
it could be cool to have one.
And i am totally blind so i don't need the imac with retina support.
What i want is a computer for mail, internet and some music production.
Will a new mac mini be enough for music production or should i stick with a
macbook pro?
I really need some suggestions even though i know its hard to help.
I now have a mac mini mid 2011 which ofcourse begins to be a bit oldish.
The new upcomming macbook seems to be a bit to much for the money i think.
So please help.
Thanks in advance.

Hello, agree with You as I had this a few weeks ago as well.
interestingly on the I pad it still worked but not the I phone6Pluss. I

I have no evidence for this except that it all occurred at about the

App Store. I think these problems were also eventually resolved at the

Any ideas?

I workaround the lack of the ability to open folders with a specific
app. For sound in this case I use the free VLC Media Player from

www.videolan.org

I then press command-o which is a standard Mac OS X shortcut to open a
file or folder of files. I select my sound folder, press return, and VLC
will make a playlist with those sound files for me. Think of this as the
Winamp on steroids for Mac OS X. There is VLC Media Player for Windows,
but accessibility leaves a lot to be desired in my personal opinion. So
I use Winamp on the Windows side.

this is because of a lack of drivers that are present during
installation. The result was that even my sighted help found it
difficult to review the screen. So, I would bet you that an OCR
package would have trouble, too. Then there is the fact that you
would have to press a considerable amount of keystrokes without error
and without any audio feedback, which would be very disconcerting and
could lead to problems if something didn’t go as expected.

Which talking installer are you referring to? Is it from the Win8PE
project? If so, you should easily be able to build an installer for
64-BIT machines. The only trouble is that getting audio to work on a
Mac would be tricky as the drivers are not present. I’ve heard that
others have had success with connecting USB sound devices, so if you
have a USB headset or sound card around that uses generic Windows
drivers, that might be a possible option. But you might just want to
grab some sighted help if available, because while I know that isn’t
ideal, it will probably be the easiest solution.

The dark side of Apple's two-factor authentication

Earlier this week, a strange message popped up on my Mac that I thought
nothing of. "You can't sign in because your account was disabled for
security reasons." I dismissed it in my tired haze, thinking it would solve
itself and went to sleep.

The next morning, I didn't have time to deal with the message - which was
now popping up every half hour - for a few hours until it became annoying. I
figured I'd done something dumb and broken iCloud, but that it could wait.

I'd turned two-factor on my Apple ID in haste when I read Mat Honan's
harrowing story about how his Mac, iPhone and other devices were wiped when
someone broke into his iCloud account. That terrified me into thinking about
real security for the first time.

When I finally had time to investigate the errors appearing on my machine, I
discovered that not only had my iCloud account been locked, but someone had
tried to break in. Two-factor had done its job and kept the attacker out,
however, it had also inadvertently locked me out.

The Apple support page relating to lockouts assured me it would be easy to
recover my account with a combination of any two of either my password, a
trusted device or the two-factor recovery key.

When I headed to the account recovery service, dubbed iForgot, I discovered
that there was no way back in without my recovery key. That's when it hit
me; I had no idea where my recovery key was or if I'd ever even put the
piece of paper in a safe place. I've moved since I set up two-factor on
iCloud.

I began nervously scouring the entire house for the code, before giving up
after a few frustrating hours and began searching my computer for any trace
of it. I found countless "recovery keys" but they weren't for the right
things; for my Mac's hard-drive encryption, Twitter, Facebook and other
accounts, but not for my Apple ID.

How could I be foolish enough to misplace my Apple ID recovery key?
I swore that I'd taken a screenshot, printed it and had taken a photo of it
with my iPhone for extra safekeeping.

This is when it began to sink in that this single ID held the keys to much
of my digital life; everything from iTunes purchases going back seven years,
app purchases and even the ability to get my iPhone out of the grips of Find
my iPhone's lock.

The sinking feeling began. After fruitlessly searching and a lot of cussing,
I decided to call Apple. I figured that something must be wrong, since the
support page claims you can use trusted devices to recover your ID in cases
like this.

The first person I spoke to told me immediately after getting on the phone
that in no uncertain terms I had forfeit my Apple ID by losing the recovery
key. He refused to help me. I hung up and called back.

On the second call, I got a lovely woman who totally understood my plight
and how terrible it was. She told me a similar thing had happened to her,
and it had turned out OK. After 20 minutes of poking around and lots of
awkward sighing, she put me on hold to talk to a senior manager.

When she got back on the line, the story was just as bleak. "We take your
security very seriously at Apple" she told me "but at this time we cannot
grant you access back into your Apple account. We recommend you create a new
Apple ID."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing and fought back that surely there was
some other way, but I was told point blank that Apple would not help me. I
offered a scan of my go
