Re: Affordable Braille display that works with voiceover

2023-04-26 Thread Shannon Dyer
Affordable is pretty variable, depending on your circumstances. I’m personally
in love with my Orbit Reader 20+. I’ve been using it for about a year now, and
it plays nicely with VoiceOver both on my phone and on my computer. It’s
noisier than some displays, so keep that in mind if you’re planning to use it
in a public setting or while recording. I believe it’s currently priced around
$700.

Dropboxon the Mac

2022-10-29 Thread Shannon Dyer
Good afternoon,

I’m trying to use selective sync on my Mac with dropbox. I’m told I need to do
this via the desktop dropbox app, but the app has historically not been
accessible with Voiceover. I’m wondering if any of you have found work-arounds
for this. Is there any way to see the preferences for the Dropbox app?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Some Questions Regarding Pages and Voiceover

2022-01-17 Thread Shannon Dyer
Good afternoon all,

I’ve been a Mac user for a number of years, but I’ve never been a fan of the
word processor Pages. Now though, I need to familiarize myself with it and
somehow get comfortable using it. I’m wondering if there are certain settings I
need to tweak in order to make VoiceOver work well with the program. Right now,
I can create, edit, and save documents, but when I ask for the word count to be
displayed, I can’t actually get VoiceOver to read out the count. I’m guessing
I’m doing something wrong, but I’m not sure exactly what that might be.

I appreciate any help any of you might be able to offer.

desktop which is where drives usually appear is empty. This doesn’t happen all
the time, but it does seem to be happening more often. Might anyone know why
this could be happening and what I could do to fix it?

Re: Podcasting on the Mac?

2016-11-19 Thread Shannon Dyer
Thank you so much for all the info and recommendations.

If I’m interviewing someone via Skype, would the other person’s voice be picked
up using Garage Band or Amadeus? If not, is there some other recording
application I need?

Thanks again for all the help.

considering updating to Maverix, but have a question

2014-04-28 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hello, all.

I have a macbook that I purchased in 2010, just before lion was released. I'm
thinking of updating to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, but have a question
before doing so.

When I first got the machine, I created a small windows partition using
bootcamp. Windows XP is the operating system that runs there. I would like to
update, but I want to make sure that the update will take away the partition.
Since windows XP is no longer supported, I want the machine to run the mac os
only. Is this possible? If so, could someone tell me how to make it happen?

I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Lists in nightowl

2014-02-08 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I'm wondering how to make lists in the twitter client nightowl. I know command
p brings up the prompt to create the list tab. I have done this. My problem
seems to be with adding people to the list. I added several people and it
worked. Then, I realized I had forgotten some, and went back in to add those.
The first set of names went away, and only the tweets of the last people added
showed up in the list. I removed the tab, and tried to start all over from the
beginning, but it seems to erase names all on its own. I didn't think there was
a limit on how many people you could have on a list. Perhaps there is though.

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Thanks in advance.

Shannon

For those of you who helped me beta test iMud (the accessible MUD

to be putting it on but the bulk of the work has been done and it’s a

Re: Bookmark App is free today (November 6, 2013) [was Re: Chapters in audio books in iOS 7]

2013-11-06 Thread Shannon Dyer
I've used this app, and have liked it. However, it's important to note that it
will only add things to its library that are tagged as audiobooks. So, make
sure any mp3 files you may have are retagged, or the app will not be able to
read them.

splitting MP3 files

2013-10-23 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I'm wondering what, if anything, people use to split large mp3 files into
smaller ones. I know there are several programs that work with windows, but I
have no idea what will work with the Mac. I have a MacBook running mountain
lion.

Thanks for any assistance.

question about audiobook binder

2013-06-10 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I'm trying to use audiobook binder to join tracks that are currently in .mp3
format. However, it seems to want to convert the files to .m4b format. Is there
a way to keep it from doing this? I'd much rather the files remain in .mp3. If
not, what software do people recommend for joining .mp3 files?

Hi, Allison.

I haven't found a good client for the Mac. I use a windows client on my

It's wonderfully accessible.

I'd love to talk muds with you. Email me off list, if you don't mind. My

Thank you so much. I looked at a list of voice over commands, and it didn't say

trouble using a mouse in snow leopard

2012-04-20 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I'm having kind of a strange problem that I'm hoping someone here can help with.

I'm running snow leopard on a MacBook, and Safari is the browser I'm using.

So, I have a profile set up on one of the online dating services. However, when
I want to edit this profile, I run into a problem. I can easily edit things
that have radio buttons or check boxes. However, when I want to edit something
in a form field, it won't let me do it.

I called and asked the company how to do this. They told me I had to click in
the actual form field. I've tried making sure the field is under the mouse
using vo f5, and, once it's there, I do VO space, which is what I understood to
be the equivalent of a mouse click. However, it just makes a beeping sound at
me, and I can't edit the form field. I've tried this both interacting and not
interacting with the text, and it makes no difference.

So, is there something I'm doing wrong? Oh. I've also tried using the track
pad, and double tapping when the field is under the mouse. The results are the
same. So, I'm quite baffled, and would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Re: Fraser Speirs - Blog - Misconceptions About iOS Multitasking

2012-01-07 Thread Shannon Dyer
Yes. With something like readToGo, it definitely matters. If I have more than a
couple of things in the app switcher, I get the low memory warning when running
ReadToGo. Once I clear the switcher, the app runs just fine.

Re: a note on microphones for macs

2011-10-28 Thread Shannon Dyer
I have no clue, but would be very interested in finding out. I have a wonderful
USB headset that works on Windows, but won't work when I'm running Mac OS.

I'm not sure which mics are Mac compatible. I have a feeling this will take
some research.

Question about Safari and Snow Leopard

2011-10-22 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I'm still running Snow Leopard, and I've been having trouble with Safari. I've
never been as comfortable with it as I was with Internet Explorer, but, for
most things, I've managed to make it work.

However, I'm having difficulty navigating a large site. I need to find an edit
box where I can post a comment, and then, the button beneath the box to
actually post the comment to the site.

It doesn't matter what I set the web router to. No matter what I do, it refuses
to find the box. I can find the "post comment" button with the item chooser,
but, once I find it, I just sort of know it exists on the page without knowing
where.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been using Internet Explorer on the
Windows side of my Mac to do this, because fighting with Safari is proving too
time-consuming. However, I would like a solution, if there is one.

Thanks so much for any advice anyone can offer.

Some questions about pages

2011-09-14 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I'm wondering how to access the inspector in pages. It is my understanding that
things like spacing, word count, and other useful things can be accessed there.
I've looked through the menus, and can't find anything that is labeled
inspector.

Also, is there a way to get pages to open a blank template automatically? Right
now, when I open it, it makes me choose the template I want, and I'd really
like not to have to do that.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

The Mac and bookshare books

2011-08-29 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I'm wondering if anyone has an answer to this question. I imagine someone,
somewhere, must, which is good, as I am quite baffled.

When I used Windows, I could open an .xml file that I had downloaded from
bookshare. Internet explorer would open, and I could read the book, save it as
a .txt file, etc. However, I can't figure out how to get safari to do this.

I opened an .xml file, and safari opened, but it wouldn't show me the contents
of the book. It just kept showing me a list of things like top sites, and a
checkbox that was related to book marks. It said I could interact with the
.html content, but, when I did, it was blank.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how bookshare books can be read on the Mac? If
so, I would appreciate the help.

Help with audiobook binder

2011-07-30 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I've installed audiobook binder, but seem to be having problems adding files.
They add, but they aren't in the correct order. So, obviously, I don't want
them to bind that way. How can I reorganize the order the files are in?

Just for clarification purposes, they're in the correct order in the folders on
the mac, but, when they're added to the binder, the order changes. I'm not sure
why.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: typing first letters of message in mail

2011-07-22 Thread Shannon Dyer
So, if we no longer have the up and down arrow keys to scroll through messages,
how is one expected to navigate the mail app? All of this sounds very
confusing, and makes me glad I haven't upgraded yet.

RE: question about keyboard commands

2011-07-20 Thread Shannon Dyer
It's right here in your post. Use the function key with left arrow for
home, right arrow for end, up arrow for page up, and down arrow for page
down. Make sure you always hold the function key when doing this.

I have sort of a stupid question. I'm using a MacBook, and don't have a home
or an end key. Neither do I have page up or page down. I imagine there is
some sort of key combo that will perform these functions. Can someone
enlighten me?

Question about document sharing

2011-07-18 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I have a question about document sharing between the Mac and windows partions
of my computer. I've been told that both Mac and Windows can read from the
documents folder, but I don't see that on my machine. Things I saved when in
windows are only seen there, and the same holds true in Mac. Does anyone know
how I can make them available to both partitions?

Re: yorufukurou question

2011-07-17 Thread Shannon Dyer
If you go to the edit field in the timeline, write follow then the username
without the at sign. This usually works. I've had to do it more than once at
times.

I would assume unfollow is the same, but can not say for sure, as I haven't
tried it.

I scan using Kurzweil version 12. I run windows via bootcamp, and it works just

Re: Looking for the most accessible twitter client

2011-07-07 Thread Shannon Dyer
I really like the one that is hard to spell and pronounce. The English
translation of that word is Night Owl. It's quite easy to use.

I used Syrinx for a little while, but found it a little clunky. I do know that
a lot of people swear by it though.

You might try one, and then the other, just to see which you like better.
That's what I ended up doing.

Re: Pages for shannon

2011-07-02 Thread Shannon Dyer
Thank you so much for this. It was incredibly helpful, and I appreciate it
immensely.

I have one question though. I do a lot of essay writing, kind of narrative
nonfiction. I chose the blank template, because that seemed the most sensible.
I did see the header, body, and footer fields. Would I use the header field as
the place for the title, or does the application expect it to be used for
something else?

Having trouble selecting text

2011-06-29 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I have a feeling I'm missing something really simple, because I'm guessing this
really shouldn't be that hard.

I use command shift and the up or down arrows to select text, but it doesn't
seem to work. If I'm in a list of files, and I want to select two or three of
them, it somehow selects them all. If I'm on a website, it selects the first
few lines, but then, VO stops speaking.

Any thoughts?

Re: using adium

2011-06-29 Thread Shannon Dyer
It is VO friendly, but is a little tricky.

When you see your list of contacts, press enter on the one you want to message.
Type your message, and press enter again. Now, to read responses, move to the
thing that VO has labeled unknown. Interact with it, and you'll see your
messages and the responses. This is what you'll do with each contact you
message.

Hope this was helpful.

Trying to set up growl

2011-06-26 Thread Shannon Dyer
Good morning, all.

I have installed growl. I'm wondering how to set it up and customize it to work
with specific applications in specific ways. I've heard, for example, that it's
very useful for dropbox, but I can't seem to get it to work. Any tips would be
greatly appreciated.

Re: Bootcamping with windows xp

2011-06-23 Thread Shannon Dyer
It did mention XP. However, it did say that it needed to be XP with service
pack 2 or later. So, just the XP disk alone won't work. Because I don't need
windows for a lot of things, the operating system gets only 32 GB, and works
well.

Hi, all.

I know Macs are supposed to be more secure than windows machines, not as
succeptible to viruses and the like. However, it seems strange not to install
anything at all. So, I'm wondering if there's something I should install, or if
it's really all right on its own. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: The mac and accessible world

2011-06-12 Thread Shannon Dyer
So, I can just enter the room without bothering to install the plugin? That's
very interesting, because, when I did, I heard nothing but silence. Hm.

The logon screen didn't give me any difficulty. I typed my name and hit log in.
Then, much silence ensued.

The mac and accessible world

2011-06-12 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

When I used a Pc, I often attended meetings put on by

I'm not sure how to access the site using the mac though, as there is this

Check the box about quoted text. Basically, this will put your signature at the
bottom of your message, even if you're replying to someone else's message, as I
am doing now. Otherwise, your signature would appear at the bottom of the
entire email.

I was able to stagger my signature over several lines. No bonging on this end.

Boot camp questions

2011-06-08 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

There are a few programs that won't run on the mac, and so, I was told that,
using boot camp, I could get windows to run on the Mac. I'm not sure how to do
this though, as I see no reference to boot camp anywhere on this machine. Also,
I'm wondering if this is something I can do myself, or, if I'll need sighted

choose between windows and Mac at start up. Will voiceover be active during
this process?

I'm really sorry for all the questions, and I do appreciate how helpful all of

Mac will not stop trying to connect to server

2011-06-08 Thread Shannon Dyer
I seem to have done a bad thing. I tried to connect to the network in our
house, but I typed it in wrong. Now, finder is trying and trying to connect to

none of it works. It just keeps telling me that it's busy, and keeps trying to
connect. How can I make it stop?

Re: transition from pc to mac

2011-06-08 Thread Shannon Dyer
I fought the signature battle yesterday. Finally, I won.

So, open mail. Then, go to the menu bar and find preferences. You'll see a
series of buttons, one of which is labeled signatures. Enable that one.

Here's where it got tricky for me. You'll see a table. You have to control
option shift down-arrow to interact with it. When I did this, I saw something
that said GMail, and, since that's what I use, I left the table alone, now that
it was highlighted. Then, I tabbed over to a box that said signature 1. At
first, I thought that was where the signature went, but no. That seems to just
be the name of the signature. I tabbed again, and was in an edit box. I wrote
the signature. The next part, I couldn't get voiceover to do, so a friend
clicked on the plus sign for me. Apparently, this says that this is the
signature I wanted to use. Then, I checked the box that said "include signature
above quoted text". After that, I was done.

Hopefully, this helps a bit.

Re: transition from pc to mac

2011-06-08 Thread Shannon Dyer
Joanne,

I'm in the absolute same boat. I was a windows user forever, and my machine is
now in the process of dying. So, I bought a Mac. I'm finding it quite
overwhelming. I keep tweeting all these questions to Mac users that I know, and
I do feel quite stupid at times. So, I, too, shall be grateful for any tips
people have to offer.
