If it's temporary then you don't want to actually unsubscribe, just tell
google to stop sending you mail until you're ready to turn it back on
again. I'll contact you off list.

if you want the installer I can post it some where

windows 8.1 on bootcamp with mac mini 2012 not working with usb audio?

Hello I had to get sighted help getting windows back on to my bootcamp
sset up

whone thing that I am running in to and I have no idea why this is happening
en I go to install windows I am using the talking installation and got
windows started how ever once it instals and gets to the set up screen
where you normally turn on narator this is where usb audio refuses to
work what so ever

tried 2 different usb sound cards, and a usb head set
I know these devices work because I was able to get windows started
using the talking installer and it worked fine.
only thing I can think of is that usb audio is not supported on the mac
mini 2012 models, can any one confirm if this is the case on these
models of mac mini or could there be something that I can do for future
installations?

Re: VM Fusion vs Bootcamp

2014-12-29 Thread Hank Smith, and Seeing-eye dog Iona

I personally use windows with bootcamp
am using it as we speak vmware fusion works quite well how ever for best
performance its best to have 8 gigs of ram or better the more ram the
better your performance will be with vmware fusion

I currently have 4 gigs on my mac mini
I have used vmware fusion deticating 2 gigs for osx and 2 gigs for
windows it works but is a bit slow

this is one of the main reasons why I am using bootcamp for now

package would have trouble, too. Then there is the fact that you
would have to press a considerable amount of keystrokes without error
and without any audio feedback, which would be very disconcerting and
could lead to problems if something didn’t go as expected.

Which talking installer are you referring to? Is it from the Win8PE
project? If so, you should easily be able to build an installer for
64-BIT machines. The only trouble is that getting audio to work on a
Mac would be tricky as the drivers are not present. I’ve heard that
others have had success with connecting USB sound devices, so if you
have a USB headset or sound card around that uses generic Windows
drivers, that might be a possible option. But you might just want to
grab some sighted help if available, because while I know that isn’t
ideal, it will probably be the easiest solution.

Hello List,

installing Win 8.1 through BootCamp without sighted assistance. I do

you can get KNFB Reader to read a monitor screen fairly successfully.
So, my question is: Has anyone been successful in getting Win 8.1 on
their MacBook Air or Pro using this method? I reviewed the Talking
Installer to accomplish this, but the utility is only for 32 bit
machines, which makes me OOL. Also, I would like to know if there are
any keyboard shortcuts that would activate a command for lets say the
option button to reformat the bootcamp drive on the Windows side? I
am well-verse in the process of performing the set up on my MacBook
Air, so I don't need instructions on this. I do apologize if this is
slightly off topic, but it does use the Mac, with another iDevice.

Thanks in advance.

computer? right now I go to sys prefs -> startup -> set the disk to bootcamp,
and hit rest art. In windows I can right-click the system trey icon for bootcamp and
hit reboot into mac os x. Does anyone know of any ways that I can speed up this
process?

Best,

Hey, while it might work, I would not recommend doing this. I had a K8 11

inconsistently stop functioning. I was told by rep at Logitech that because
of some time in the ways, it wasn't advisable to try to use keyboards and

to the right or below, I can’t remember which location for sure. For
the VO user, it is similar, except that if you just arrow down through
the messages list, without jumping over to read the message, it is
counted as a “read” message even though you didn’t actually read the
body of the message. Many of us don’t like this, thus, turn off the
Preview pane so only messages that we’ve actually read show up as read.

Regarding the use of the Trackpad, that is just one tool that can do
the job. A mouse can do the trick just the same as a Trackpad. When
you use the mouse, do exactly as the instructions say to do with the
Trackpad, but hold down the mouse button instead and drag as outlined
in those instructions. If you really do wish the portable Trackpad
for your Mini, I would just order it from the Apple On-line store and
have it shipped to your home instead of going an hour away to the
Apple Store. The nearest Apple Store for me is a 5 hour drive, so,
the On-Line Store is my normal method.

Hi all,

You may recall that I pointed to the new Mac Mini as the only noteworthy
announcement from Apple recently. If you use Mac Minis as servers, I now
withdraw that recommendation. See this article:
http://www.primatelabs.com/blog/2014/10/estimating-mac-mini-performance/

The fact is that Apple has chosen, at the cost of reducing the price, to also
reduce multicore performance of the high-end Mac Mini as part of its design.
For a server, the newest Mac Mini is slower than the older. I am therefore
keeping my older Mac Mini, and leaving behind Thunderbolt 2, 802.11AC and Intel
Iris graphics, all of which are superior in the newer model, but none of which
are important to serving, in favour of the processor performance, which is.

If you don't run servers, Mac Mini may yet prove attractive. But I fear that
this is yet another sign of Apple's trivialisation of the consumer market;
after all, they have a Mac Pro to sell you. It's also worth noting that the
RAM in the newest Mac Mini is soldered in place, just like the MacBooks, so
choose your upgrades wisely. It saddens me to see this development; at least
when it was just software, you could replace it.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

features at all besides the system wide features that Apple talked
about.
As for beta testing Yosemite, it was quite the experience. I
remember with beta 2 I thought my computer would never start up,
because it stayed on the Apple screen for God knows how long. Maybe
it's because this thing is almost 4 years old, but who knows. Also
in one of the betas, I think it was either beta 3 or 4, the software
update option in the Apple menu disappeared, and even with the
general public release it's not there. And on my end at least, when
booting up, I no longer hear the start up chime. I just see the
Apple logo. This started in beta 6. But one of the great things
about this version, and some of you may notice it as well, you can
see a notification that your Mac is being optomized and that it may
effect your performance and battery. I think they should've done
that before Yosemite, but I digress. Also, on my end at least, they
kept the feedback assistant app so if you have any problems, you can
report them with that app. All in all, Yosemite is awesome, and it
was a pleasure beta testing it all this summer up until now.

What, about Youtube? All you do is put what you want in to the
search box, then, press return. Now, go from heading to heading for
each video. Press VO+space to play the video. IF it's the one you
want, you can then open it in Downie. I don't understand what the
problem is with that. Unless, that is, you want something I'm not
understanding. Yes, when you click on the video link, the video
plays and you get the whole page. True, but, you can still open
with Downie and download that video. Believe me, That's how I do it.

Hi,
What i don't like with Downie and i consider that almost to be a
show stopper is that you can't search for videos from within
Downie as you can with Mactubes. That, imho is an invaluable
feature so now i have to use Mactubes and Downie in combination
because i think the youtube site is messy at best and i don't
understand how the extention is supposed to work, that's how
stupid i am.

Hi, I think I said this already:
The video gets downloaded first then, if you want (you can
select this in the apps settings) the app converts the file to
mp3 and then deletes the original video. You can give it as many
videos ad you like and if you like it will autostart them one
after another so you dont need to look at it again.
What i like about this app in contrast with mactubes is that you
can use safari to select the videos that you want to import, i
personally did not like that mactubes limited the results to 50
and then you had to go to the following pages.
With downie you can also get a whole playlist or, as i like to
do it get all the videos by a certain user by going to his or
her profile selcting videos and then selecting the first one,
once that one is playing you can easily do next video until you
have them all (with each one you then select open with downie in
the safari toolbar) it works quite well for me personally.

Hi,

Couple of points here. Firstly, if you delete all the built in keystrokes,
you have to do a lot of finger contortions that you don't actually need to
do, given that the mac keystrokes are much easier to reach than the windows
ones. I would advise people to keep them, they can actually come in really
handy. Secondly, and more importantly, if you swap the windows and alt keys
round in Windows, how can you command-tab away from Fusion, as command is
now alt, so would give you the alt-tab keystroke in Windows? Yes, it takes a
little getting used to the fusion arrangement, but it gives you far more
flexibility than doing this remapping does.

Cheers

Below is what I found in my collection of mac tutorials.
Mapping keys in fusion

First off, it is true that you have no insert key on the mac, while
you

often

do need one in windows. You can create a key mapping for yourself in
1 of

2

ways. Either using fusion itself, and there is no real down side as
far as

I'm

aware, but it is a little tricky to set up because of an interface
issue

in

fusion. The other way to get an insert key is to use the sharp keys

program.

Sharp keys lets you remap a few more keys than fusion will allow. For
example, using sharp keys, you can even remap your right command, or
your right option key, to the windows insert.

If you do it via fusion, then all your virtual machines will get an
insert

key. If

you have windows 7 and xp like I do, creating the insert key using
the

fusion

keyboard remapper creates it for all virtual machines because fusion
only allows you to do it inside its global preferences, command
comma, and not on a per machine basis, command e.

If you create your insert key using sharp keys, then it is going to
be a

local

setting for that windows installation only, because sharp keys
modifies

the

windows registry to do the trick. Both methods will give you the same
result: an insert key that is not just insert, but that can be held
down

as if it

were a modifier key for other keys.

This answers your other issue, where caps lock cannot be used inside
the virtual machine as a modifier. It works as a caps lock, but you
can't

hold it

down and press a letter inside the virtual machine, in order to give
commands to your screen reader. Sharp keys and fusion itself though,
will give you an insert key like the one on a normal windows
computer. This

lets

you use insert rather than caps lock for your screen reader's
commands, so let's concentrate on insert, and I will leave caps lock for

someone else.

Now, let's look at the way you can do it inside fusion. I'm using
fusion

3.1.3,

which is the latest version as of today. To update, go to the menu
bar in fusion, vo m, then once right, then down to check for updates,
and then follow the instructions.

First, fire up fusion and, just to be certain, have your virtual
machines

shut

down. Then press command comma to open fusion's global preferences.

At the top of this window is a toolbar. Interact with it and click

keyboard and

mouse. A new window will appear.

The first thing you will encounter is a pop up button where you
choose

your

keyboard and mouse profile. The window itself consists of 4 tab
sheets,

and

all those settings together are stored in a keyboard and mouse
profile. I don't think we will ever need a second profile, but that's
what the button allows. Leave it at its default.

The first tab sheet of this dialog, named, key mappings, is where
you can swap your windows logo and alt keys. By default, fusion will
map your command key to the windows logo key, and your option key to
the windows alt key. This is not very intuitive for those of us who
are used to

windows

and its keyboard layout, but it's easy to swap them. See below. In
this window, you will also be able to create your insert key inside
fusion, and

if

you want, give yourself a numb lock toggle as well.

If you look at this table, then many mac keys are mapped to some
windows counterparts. Personally, I don't think that is necessary at
all. For

example,

in windows, you use control plus c to co

Hi Georgina and Sabahattin,

Thanks so much. The problem is solved. Mavericks now runs freshly on my

the operating system, found in the downloaded app bundle. to a USB drive. This
new way of doing it was unknown to me. This time I did not have to go through
these hoops, but I'm definitely saving your messages for future use.

I found out about an interesting change in disk utility in Mavericks, when
compared to the older mountain lion version, just for those interested. In ml
and earlier, if you booted from the recovery mac partition, command r after the
chime while turning the computer on, then we could not delete the macintosh hd
partition with disk utility, as long as it was still encrypted. The process was
tedious. I used to have to boot up normally, turn of filevault, then let it do
its decryption process which takes hours, and only then can you reboot into the
recovery partition, and delete the macintosh partition from there. Now with
Mavericks, this is different. Whether or not macintosh hd is encrypted, you can
now wipe it using disk utility, before doing a reinstall from the recovery
partition.

Many of us did this when Mavericks first came out and discussed it here. So you
can look through this list archives. Or just use your favourite search engine.
I think there are a few utilities to automate the procedure, if that is what
you want.

In reading Mac World's guide. They suggest you should boot up your machine in
recovery mode and use disk utility to attempt to repair the disk firstly to
ensure it is functional. Article link below.

However, you should be able to sort it out yourself, I suspect. The machine
doesn't know your wireless access details. Either open up your wireless or use

macbook is indeed running Mavericks already.

This afternoon, the Mavericks macbook somehow died. It won't boot. My wife
tells me there's an infinite beach ball, and the system has been used so
intensively, that I wanted to reinstall Mavericks anyway, and start anew. That
is because my macbook had lion, mountain lion, and then I updated that to
Mavericks, and the macbook deserves a fresh install. Unfortunately, the macbook
won't boot anymore.

I thought I would first restore my latest macbook time machine backup. This

If I start up the macbook from its recovery partition and I then try to

now, I would like to create a Mavericks USB stick, and reinstall Mavericks
from there. My macbook running Mavericks, won't boot, nor recover, so that
machine is not an option to create the USB recovery drive with. I'll have to
create a Mavericks USB recovery stick using my mac mini, which runs Mountain
lion.

From what I discovered, I can indeed create a recovery USB drive, using my
mountain lion machine. I downloaded the Mavericks installer app, I downloaded
the diskmaker program, but when I run disk maker, it tells me that it can only
create a mountain lion USB recovery disk, and not one for Mavericks. This is
because disk maker detected mountain lion running on the system.

So, is there any way you can think of, that I can use to create a Mavericks USB
bootable installer drive for Mavericks, using my mountain lion machine? I could
update this mountain lion machine and be out of trouble right away. However, I
bumped into numerous Mavericks issues that don't occur on my current mountain
lion installation. So, if possible, I'd like to keep using ML for a few more
months, until we have Yosemite. I'm very interested to hear your solution if
there is one.

Regards,
Paul.

I had to Label many of the buttons The "power" button for the receiver being
really important.

On the iPad I get channel numbers but no listing. I can enter a channel
number. The only way I have found to stop play is to lock the screen on either

Now if memory serves me correctly Jonathan Mosen was a SlingBox user so
Jonathan perhaps if I am correct are you still using the beast and if so, how?

In my opinion they have a lot of work to do in terms of making their apps

works if you are willing to take the time to label the buttons. Most of the
time you can figure out these buttons from the existing labels. I do not use

Hello Hank:

You would used the dongle for the device that does not have Bluetooth I
think.
That Logitech keyboard has three buttons at the top of the keyboard just
to the right of the escape button which are for each device.

There is a button on the back of the keyboard that you press to get it
in repairing mode.

So this step would be one. Press the button that you want to configure.
To press and hold the button on the bottom of the keyboard for about two
seconds.
Three go into the Bluetooth setting on the device that you want to use
and pick the Bluetooth keyboard double tap on that too. It should say
connected.

Now that keyboard is paired with the device that you selected.
Call me if you have any questions.
Take care.

You would used the dongle for the device that does not have Bluetooth
I think.
That Logitech keyboard has three buttons at the top of the keyboard
just to the right of the escape button which are for each device.

There is a button on the back of the keyboard that you press to get it
in repairing mode.

So this step would be one. Press the button that you want to configure.
To press and hold the button on the bottom of the keyboard for about
two seconds.
Three go into the Bluetooth setting on the device that you want to use
and pick the Bluetooth keyboard double tap on that too. It should say
connected.

Now that keyboard is paired with the device that you selected.
Call me if you have any questions.
Take care.

really???
sense what version?
last I heard there was no way to make it accessible with out having to
rewrite the code from scratch? if I am incorrect on this what version
is accessible as far as most useability is concerned?

Hello.
Logic pro X is reasonably accessible and it is becoming more and more
accessible with each update.
People are using it with voice over with success making recordings, mixing etc.
There are issues, of course, but it is very usable.

Good luck.
Nektarios.

I think Seton makes one that hooks to USB. Another option would hook to the
network router, and that is the HD Home Run Prime from Silicon Dust. I'm
thinking about one of those because at least on TWC, my MTS button seems to
have no effect in getting the described audio that I know exists in my area
on at least Fox, ABC, and PBS, and I'd like to have it.
