Couldn’t you run around me or some other app in parallel which alerts you to

Re: I did it!

2016-05-18 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,
I haven't found a way that is accessible for you to be able to track your
actual location but if you keep the Uber app open while you are on the ride it
should keep updating your ETA so you can see that. Also, if you tap on the trip
options but then there is a button to share your ETA. You have several options
of how to do that and one of them is messaging. If you choose that and select
who you want to send it to that person will get a text message with a link they
can click on. That will take them to a map of your specific ride where they can
follow in real time where you are. I have done this a few times and people
really appreciate being able to follow my ride especially later at night
because it shows them in real time where I am and then they can see when I
arrive at my destination.
Hope that helps answer some of those questions.

2016-05-17 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,

In my opinion Uber is much superior to cabs. I won't bore anyone unless someone
asks but I could give several reasons why I think Uber is a much better option
for a blind person than is using a cab. The interface on the iPhone with VO is
very easy to use as well.

Score one for the disrupters, glad to hear your Uber experience was a good one.
I’ve yet to try it but I will the next time the opportunity presents itself.
I’ve heard a lot of good things from both blind Android and IOS users which
sounds like Uber is far superior to cabs in many ways.

Glad it went well.

RE: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-05-04 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi Eileen,

I have been very busy lately, so I didn't get around to really looking at my
Gmail box until tonight. Sorry that I didn't reply sooner.

Apparently, Apple has put an accessible watch, one that we can try out with
VoiceOver, in all of their stores. There is supposedly a number that we can
call, let them know that we want to use Voiceover, and they can make an
appointment for us to visit a store of our choosing. Unfortunately, I don't
know the number, but, I think that if you call a store, they can help. When I
ordered, I was told that my watch would be coming in June, but the person who
took my order told me to keep checking with the online apple store under "order
status," because watches have been delivered sooner than Apple had expected
them to be ready. A week ago, I did receive an e-mail, letting me know that my
watch would be delivered within three to five week. So, that means that I
should have it sometime this month. Have you heard David Woodbridge's Applevis
podcast on unboxing and setting up the watch? It is very informative. I
downloaded it from iBlink Radio and I saved it so that I can follow along when
I receive my watch.

HI
HiHi Myrna,

Ohto to to You were so lucky to have a chance to try the VO feature. I went to
the store a day after they were released. I didn't purchase yet, but was very
tempted as a early birthday gift to myself. It's a big one this year, so I
thought I would do it in grand style. I decided to wait for some feedback from
other blind folks on how well accessibility works before placing an order.
Well!!! Now I will need to wait until the summertime when they'll be more
available. Anyways, I hope you make the right choice for yourself, "To Buy Or
Not To Buy..."

Best,
Eileen

I would imagine that the notifications just stay on the phone then. I
couldn't imagine having two devices both speaking though, unless VO doesn't
speak that stuff when you have the watch on. It would be cool if the various
GPS apps can start to use it, but I don't think batteries are big enough to
last a meaningful amount of time doing something like that.

What happens if you're using neither device? Where do notifications go then?
Has anybody tried going for a walk with their watch while leaving the phone
at home? Does it sync back up again without intervention? Does it add your
steps? Still on the fence but curious.

Hi Lisette,

My notifications go to both places. I have gone for a walk without my phone,
and it does sync up and keep track of your steps.

No, the watch itself does not have braille support, but you can
control most, if not all, aspects of the watch through the iPhone app.

Sorry, could you just clarify for me: were the watches you tried the sport
models or the stainless steel models? I’ve read lots of accounts of Apple
stores carrying different sizes of watch, but not of the same type, and I’d be
interested to know why people are opting for the steel model over the Sport if
they are doing so, or whether their impression is true for both types. The
steel model seems to be reported as very chunky, and I’m wondering if the Sport
improves on that.

The watches arriving tomorrow are both the Sport because I’m in trial mode with
these things. The wisdom of going to the Store to actually see them before
ordering them is nothing to getting them tomorrow, and I can see all the others
whenever my store next carries them. :)

HI

Best,

Hi Myrna and others. I saw a very handy tip posted to Twitter indicating that
you can take any of the Apple Watch models they have in store, and tell Siri to
turn VoiceOver on.
Cool that you got to play with it fully VO-enabled.

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-23 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

Today, I visited the Apple Store on West 14th Street, in New York City. I
really don’t know why I was so lucky, perhaps just picked the right store,
because when I told the sales person there that I knew that I wasn’t going to
be able to experience Voiceover, she said that she was almost positive that
the store did have one accessible Apple watch so that blind visitors could try
Voiceover. She had her colleague look for it and it was found. Therefore, I
had the opportunity to play with Voiceover and interact with the screen. I
also had siri open the settings app for me. The watch was the 42mm sports
model and I would say that the speaker sound level was like most of the talking
watches all of us have used. The atmosphere in the store, as in most of the
Apple stores, of course, was noisy, so it was a bit difficult to hear.
However, in a less noisy environment, I think that it will be fine. I did have
the chance to try the 38mm model, which I liked even better than the larger
watch, which really isn’t that much larger. The sales woman said that she
liked the look of it on my wrist better than the 42mm watch. I did try the
band that comes with the sports model, the melanise band and the leather loop
band. Although the sales woman and my friend really liked the leather loop, I
didn’t I did, however, like the melanise band because it felt like a mesh
bracelet and it was very light. I loved the design of the watch and the feel
of the glass. Now, For me “to order or not to order, that is the question."

I'd like to know if a Braille display will work with the watch. I'm going to
try it when I get mine.

I thought the 42 Millimetre was heavy because of the stainless steal and the

Some have said the 42mm will have slightly better battery life.

I think it depends on what kinds of gestures and input one will need
to do on the watch. If having to actually type on the watch, it may
be better to have the 42mm.

Anyone have ideas on pros and cons of the 38mm or 42mm size?

I think the watch will be helpful for notifications. It will be
easier to access the notifications on your rist rather than having to
take the iPhone out of your pocket, etc.

I also think pass book and boarding passes and hotel keys eventually
will be a cool function of the watch so again as not to have to take
your iPhone out.

It will also be handy to keep track of the ETA of an Uber or Lyft
without again having to take my iPhone out of my pocket or constantly
be holding on to my iPhone in order to check on the ETA information.

I've never been extraordinarily concerned about VoiceOver talking in
the background if its kept at a low volume. I use ear buds on the
plane, but otherwise usually just use the built in speaker to the
iPhone. Perhaps there will be a way to mute the watch say if you are
in an important meeting.

One commentary I read really made sense. It said that the Apple watch
is good for someone who is constantly on their iPhone, and constantly
handling notifications. It will make it easier to process these
notifications. I often find that when I take my iPhone out, I have 10
or 20 pending notifications.

The round knob on the watch is the digital crown. You can use it to
scroll through different functions and applications.

The square button will bring up contacts and also bring up Apple pay.

Both the digital crown (knob) and square button are on the same side
of the watch.

I also saw the abbreviated demo where you couldn't really do much in
the store. David Woodbridge also posted a positive review using
VoiceOver.

I also look forward to the heart beat monitoring, and like that it
will be in one device rather than also say having to get a Fitbit.

Cheree Heppe here:

With all that has been posted and written, I finally stopped by our
city's Apple store to check out the two sizes of Apple watches.

The Apple store has installed a table for displaying the various band
types and the two watch sizes. There are demo watches kept in a drawer
built into the table. There is a trick way of opening the drawer.

Some people wrote about various elements of the watch and bands.

Leather bands. The bands I saw looked exactly like high end leather
bands. I have owned high end leather goods. The sides and surfaces are
finished in much the same ways. I have done leather and harness
crafting and know the rudiments, so, I don't feel that the leather bands
feel like composite materials or slurry made to seem like leather.

One type of metal band looks a lot like those expandable watch bands. I
personally would choose a different band style because I never liked
that type of band, but the workmanship is solid and good, as far as I
could tell by handling the demo items.

The sport band is very sport ready. It feels very smooth, sort of a
cross between rubber and metal. A wearer could sweat up a storm and the
band would remain impervious. Sorry, can't recall its color

There is a mesh type metal band that affixes via a magnetic closure.
This closure seemed to hold fast, although I did not attempt to whirl my
wrist around my head or anything exciting like that. This band is
silver in color. I found that the back of the smaller watch fit against
my skin well without noticeable gaps between me and it. I am not
over-nourished and feel that this band would be my first choice for an
Apple provided band.

I remember tooled leather bands made in the hippie mode that were broad,
even broader than the larger Apple watch. The Apple watches would look
great on those. This type of watch in a slightly different
configuration would work really well as a pocket or necklace watch.
Don't sneer. I have two mechanical, etched metal necklace Braille
watches about the same size.

I did not demo the watch, as the store was noisy with all the
customers. Our city;s Apple store is always busy and even iphones are
hard enough to hear that earphones should be used, at least by me.

The watch itself is sort of squared off around its edges and thicker
than a sighted watch, but would not be bad for a Braille watch. There
are two buttons on one of the sides without the band connectors. The
round button is the one that acts as the Home Button. I forget what the
rectangular button does. These buttons are eminently tactile. There is
no mistaking there shapes if you have finger sensitivity.

The price did set me back a bit. By the time I save for the watch, the
next generation will be ready for roll-out. I wonder what a creative
jeweler could do with a band for that kind of watch; or what could be
made for one of the tiny Apple devices, like a Nano? Interesting
possibilities.

Please, please provide feedback to apple. The Apple Watch could be a great

Actually, I felt pretty much the same way until I got a FitBit Flex a couple of
months ago, and started tracking sleep, steps, calories, etc. I like the Flex
a lot, but there are some things the Apple watch does that the Flex doesn't,
and they're things I'd like to have. I see myself mostly using the watch for
the health applications, and anything I can do with Siri. As far as messaging
and all that, it seems like it'll be much easier just to do that from the phone.

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-18 Thread sadamahmed1992
Thanks for clearing that up Jonathan.

That's disappointing as I am a big believer in being as productive as possible.

I will get one eventually just not in the initial phase.

Let the early adopters work out the bugs for the rest of us.

Kind regards,

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-18 Thread Brent Harding
I'm not sure whether to buy it either. It looks like one of the only ways to
try it out though because I'm not anywhere near the two Apple Stores the
state of Wisconsin has. The funny thing is though that there is a place
called Apple Store, but they sell fruit instead.

I'd love to see one, but no chance of that here in New Zealand for
goodness knows how long. We don't have actual Apple stores here so we
don't know which Apple re-sellers will be selling it here.

I'm on the fence about buying one. I don't really like talking watches so
probably it wouldn't be a good buy for me. I'm still curious though.
Definitely something I want to feel before I buy it.

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-18 Thread Donna Goodin
Wow, I would hate not having actual Apple stores! I am sure i wouldn't have
bought the watch without being able to see it first.

I got the smaller size, 38mm I think. the larger one wasn't over the top huge,
but it was bigger than I would have wanted. And since I don't need to see the
screen, I figured I might as well stick with the smaller one. As far as
describing the size, it's bigger than my current braille watch, but not by too
horribly much. I actually got to put one on my wrist, and it felt very
comfortable to wear. However, the stainless steel watch is noticeably heavier,
the lighter weight was another thing I liked about the sports model.

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-18 Thread Donna Goodin
Actually, I felt pretty much the same way until I got a FitBit Flex a couple of
months ago, and started tracking sleep, steps, calories, etc. I like the Flex
a lot, but there are some things the Apple watch does that the Flex doesn't,
and they're things I'd like to have. I see myself mostly using the watch for
the health applications, and anything I can do with Siri. As far as messaging
and all that, it seems like it'll be much easier just to do that from the phone.

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-18 Thread Sadam Ahmed
Interesting. After ordering mine on the first day I've subsequently
hit the cancel button.

I came to the conclusion that my iPhone can already do most of the
things I'd use the Watch for anyway.

Also me being a productivity nut I can't see myself powering through my
email on said Watch like I can on the phone.

Maybe I'll get the second generation but at this point it appears to be
not worth it.

Most first gen Apple products come with a quirk.

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-18 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Donna,
What size did you get? I don't know what size wrist/hands you have, but what
did you think of each of the sizes?
I'd love to see one, but no chance of that here in New Zealand for goodness
knows how long. We don't have actual Apple stores here so we don't know which
Apple re-sellers will be selling it here.

I'm on the fence about buying one. I don't really like talking watches so
probably it wouldn't be a good buy for me. I'm still curious though. Definitely
something I want to feel before I buy it.

did, and though I have my suspitions if it was done unintentionally or not, the

Re: I did it! Bye bye Windows!

2013-02-04 Thread Chris Gilland
I personally have never in the past had issues with Best Buy let alone this
franchise location. Having said that I don't doubt your opinions. You're not
the first person who has had nothing but trouble. Maybe I've just been lucky
up to now. Anyway, I am going to be getting it swapped, so I'm a happy camper.
Plus the fact they're even for an additional $100 gonna install more ram for
me up to 16GB. They even told me this time, they won't let me leave the store
or even pay for the ram until I myself have had them plug the system into a
keyboard and monitor behind the counter, and boot it up turn VO on, and make
sure it is exactly to a T what I need. So it really does sound like Erick is
trying his best to make things right. And, as I said he sounds very very
embarrassed for what happened. As long as he's willing to work with me, I'm
personally willing to work with him to come to a good satisfactory resolution.

2013-02-04 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
In all fairness, I do have a friend, a sighted friend, that bought a Mac book
from Best Buy. She paid for accident protection or something like that. One
fine day she spilled a cup of water into her computer. She took it back to Best
Buy, and after they determined that they couldn't fix it, they replaced it. So,
I guess it just depends on the people you're dealing with.

Re: I did it! Bye bye Windows!

2013-02-04 Thread Erik Heil
Hey chris,
Congrats! I don't have a Mac myself, but I'm using this list as a learning
experience when I do get a Mac, which hopefully should be in the near
future. i"ll have to admit that Alex is one of the major highlights of the
Mac experience imho. So, you're on a winning streak. BTW if you wanted to
run Windows on the same machine as OSX, there's no reason why you can't run
it within a virtual machine. You mentioned your specs, and for a serious VM
installation, its not possible, but you could do basic tasks with a Windows
VM. Allocate 1GB of RAM to it, and Windows should run OK. Not ideally, but
it would be a at least functional experience.

OK, I confess I've had access to a mac for a while before my mini, but really
haven't used the mail app much. I hope I'm doing this right by replying. I
just hit command r on your message which seems to have worked. I'm really
enujoing it so far. I actually have YoruFukurou and Pianopub running and am
listenning to a praise and worship station in Pandora with Pianopub that I
created a while back based off the artist Chris Tomlin. The sound is
unbelievable, especially since I have it going through surround sound. I even
have Adium up and running.

Hi, Chris,

Congrats! I was very excited when I got my Mac Mini in April 2010. It was like
Christmas all over again. Anyhow, I plunged in without a backward glance,
figuratively speaking, and I haven't regretted it. The only thing I really have
missed are my favorite games in Windows, but that's even being rectified with
the help of those good Draconis folks. :)

That is really a shocker about the opened model. I'm glad that is being
resolved in a professional manner.

Anyhow, have fun.

I did it! Bye bye Windows!

2013-02-04 Thread Chris Gilland
I did it! I actually? did it! Just two days ago, on Saturday, I went up to
Best Buy and with a chunk of extra income I had this month, I bit the bullet
and bought me a mac mini! So now I have my 13 inch mid 2010 white macbook, and
I also now have this mini. I am taking the mini back to swap, as Best Buy
messed up though. They gave me an opened box mid 2011 model. They didn't even
tell me it was opened. Imagine my horror when I got home and tried with its
serial number to register it. It told me the purchase date I entered was not
correct. When I called Apple, they told me it had been purchased by someone
else over a year ago. We went and looked in the About this Mac page and saw it
was a mid 2011, not the newest 2012 model. That really pissed me off. Anyway,
I called Best Buy and spoke with the manager. He was extremely apologetic, and
said if I could run it up there, he'd swap it for no cost for the correct newer
2012 model. I love this system as is, but it's only got the I5, 2GB ram, where
what I wanted was the I5 4GB ram. NOt only that but I discovered this morning
earlier when trying to charge my IPhone, that one of the USB ports is bad. I'm
not very happy about this transaction, but, here is the bottom line. It's
gonna get swapped, and then I'll use Migration assistance and move all my stuff
from the macbook back over which won't take but maybe an hour or so, so really,
I'm honestly not very concerned as far as losing data. I have this thing right
now hooked up to my 5.1 home theater system via HDMI, high deff, and I gotta
tell you, sitting here now typing this e-mail on the thing… this is amazing! I
never thought Alex could sound so good through a set of surround speakers. I
shutter to think once I get the new system with the 4GB ram how good this will
be. I actually don't even have my windows desktop hooked up any more. If I
absolutely must do windows, I have a Dell Inspiron system I can use in a pinch,
although I'd rather not, if I can help it. LOL!

Anyway, I am so glad to finally officially be a full mac user! I still find
myself wanting to fall back on Windows, but my guess is now that I don't have
an easy way to do so, in time I'll get more used to things over here. I know
what I'm doing, it's just a bit awkward.

Anyway, just wanted to share. Hope that was OK.

Re: Trying to reinstall operating system, not sure if I did it right

2012-05-05 Thread Kliphton
I can't say to much here because of my agreement with the dev team. But I can
say you will be pleasantly surprised with mountain lion. And the reason it
took five hours to reinstall lion, is because I erased my hard drive first.
Sorry, should have specified that.

Re: Trying to reinstall operating system, not sure if I did it right

2012-05-05 Thread Jenny Keller
Is it a bug in Lion that sometimes, it will go to the log in screen and
sometimes, it will just go to the desktop?

that was the major problem.

It was getting a little rediculous that I was having to boot my system twice to
get it to boot up in the desk top like it's supposed to.

all the settings are correct.

That is interesting Daniel because I have no such issues with Lion at all. I

RE: Trying to reinstall operating system, not sure if I did it right

2012-05-05 Thread Daniel Miller
Oh, don't get me wrong, I believe it's an understatement. But, apple does
learn from things that are buggy in a previous release, for the most part.
I'm also hoping things are fixed in ML, as well as the stupid bug that
prohibits us from accessing the wifi menu in recovery.

LOL! That is an understatement: VO start-up under lion being buggy. A few
months ago, I did a clean install to see if it would help, but as far as I
was concerned, the clean install had way more quirks than my upgrade
install. Thank God for Carbon Copy Cloner; I just restored my original lion
install, and have resigned myself to dealing with VO's quirks. Every time a
lion update is released, I keep hoping they'll fix whatever they broke, but
so far, no dice. I'm a bit nervous about Mountain Lion, but hopefully it
will end up being better than Lion. I guess only time will tell.
I guess the poit is that I agree with Daniel; reinstalling lion to fix that
1 little quirk was probably overkill, but at least Apple has made the OS
installation accessible, so if nothing else, I suppose it was good mac
practice.

Hi,

I highly doubt you needed to reinstall for that. That's a known issue in
Lion, where Voiceover will not speak at the login field, even though it's
set to. In fact, there are bugs with VO starting on startup in lion in
general.
I've reported them to Apple for investigation, so perhaps they'll be
addressed in Mountain Lion.

I don't know yet, I only turned on my computer once since then and it went

RE: Trying to reinstall operating system, not sure if I did it right

2012-05-05 Thread Missy Hoppe
LOL! That is an understatement: VO start-up under lion being buggy. A few
months ago, I did a clean install to see if it
would help, but as far as I was concerned, the clean install had way more
quirks than my upgrade install. Thank God for
Carbon Copy Cloner; I just restored my original lion install, and have resigned
myself to dealing with VO's quirks. Every
time a lion update is released, I keep hoping they'll fix whatever they broke,
but so far, no dice. I'm a bit nervous about
Mountain Lion, but hopefully it will end up being better than Lion. I guess
only time will tell.
I guess the poit is that I agree with Daniel; reinstalling lion to fix that 1
little quirk was probably overkill, but at
least Apple has made the OS installation accessible, so if nothing else, I
suppose it was good mac practice.

Hi,

I highly doubt you needed to reinstall for that. That's a known issue in Lion,
where Voiceover will not speak at the login
field, even though it's set to. In fact, there are bugs with VO starting on
startup in lion in general.
I've reported them to Apple for investigation, so perhaps they'll be addressed
in Mountain Lion.

I don't know yet, I only turned on my computer once since then and it went
directly to the desk top, but that doesn't mean
anything, it only means that it hasn't had time to act weird yet.

We'll see the next time I shut down and turn it back on.

2012-05-05 Thread Scott Howell
Surely it could not have taken you five hours to install Lion. That is
impossible. Maybe to install Lion, set everything up, and install all of your
apps, but even then something just doesn't add up.
