Hi, In defence of Jenny, let me say this, in many, not all but many cases at least on the IPhone, there simply is no built in help or documentation for the program one is working with, at least that's my experience. I have seen a lot of cases, though i can't think of any at the moment where there's no reference to any documentation whatsoever in the app. At the risk of being flamed to bits, let me say that i have come late to this thread so may not know the whole story here, but answering a plee for help in an almost rude manner in my book is uncalled for. I left the Linux world because of that attitude, and even though it didn't hit me directly i felt sorry for the newbies that asked questions and got almost rude answers that in short said "rtfm". I mostly use the home calendar, since I'm at home most of the time. There are other items in the calendar list, such as Facebook, ICloud, Gmail, and Meetup. I think these were added when I added activities from these categories to ICal. I'm using Lion, and I still haven't come across Friends and Family. Ray, you are correct. My anger is the fact that I'm being called lazy and I can't bother to lower myself to answer the question. So, could I have handled that better perhaps so; however, I do not regret what I said. So, I have nothing further to say on the issue. there are new components in iCal for OS X lion and some of which are a little on the unnecessary. Hi all, I'm not seeing the family and friends stuff that she's seeing. I wonder if this is a new feature in Lion. I do have delegates on the left hand side, as well as work or home calendars. I don't have any family or friend options. I'm guessing this is a new feature of iCal in 10.7. I'm still running 10.6.8 here. Re: Why can't someone just answer my Ical question without confusing me with a pod cast?
Fine, since everyone else can ask questions and not be abused and berated on this list. I'll be happy to unsubscribe. As far as using some kind of help and trying the aps out, that's what I've tried to do and that's when I get stuck. If I knew of any help thing to look up things on I would. Since I'm too stupid to be on this list I'm out of here. I have worked in the Assistive Training field, and there is evidence that people have different ways of learning. I had some clients who needed their fingers placed on the keys in order to get the hang of a concept, and others who just asked me to leave them alone for half an hour while they practiced. My guess is, Jenny, that you may need individual training. Depending on the warranty that came with your Mac, you may be able to get individualized training at an Apple Store or from an Access Tech Trainer. I think you might benefit from this a lot. The problem with a list like this is that it mostly lends itself to quick answers for quick questions. If questions are stated clearly and coherently, with a specific task in mind, it's easier to help the questioner. If the question is too vague or there are too many in one post, it's difficult for both the questioner and the person responding to make sense of everything. When I send a question to the list, I ask myself: "what specifically do I want to accomplish." If I'm so confused that I'm not sure what to do first, or if I'm very frustrated, taking a break from the situation without posting helps me gain perspective on my problem. hTh, Teresa On May 5, 2012, at 1:29 PM, Ray Foret Jr wrote: > You know, Scot, I agree with most all your points; but, I really do believe > we could do without the emotional aspect of this. Re: Why can't someone just answer my Ical question without confusing me with a pod cast?
I do believe that this is getting a little bit out of hand here. Jenny, My best advice to you is this. The best way to learn to use any app is to just jump in and make use of it and be willing to make a mistake a time or two. How else you gonna learn anything about it? My best advice for seaking help is that you consult the built in help for the apps you want help with when mere use and exploration seem not to get it done for you. Honestly, it's not that we mind helping you, but, to be spoon fed the information all the time is, quite frankly, not the best way to learn; indeed, it is most likely the worst. I would suggest that you take a step back from this and keep in mind the points that Scot raises here. He does have some good points to make, and, I think that if you just step back from the emotion of the moment and give things a try, you will shock yourself at what you will learn and how quickly. FIrst let me tell you lady I am anything but lazy and I think a lot of people have made a considerable amount of effort to help you on this list. You know Jenny with that damned attitude you cannot possibly expect help. FOr the love of God can't you at least indicate that you tried to find the bloddy answer first THe way you ask all of your questions indicates to me that you have not even attempted to look at the help files etc. You do know how to use the search facilities on GOogle do you not? Do you know how to use the help facilities in the application? You know some of your questions are so confusing that it is not even clear what you are talking about at times. I should know better than to even waste time encouraging you to do the research because this is exactly the type of response I should expect. You most definitely come across as though you want to be fed the information just in the way you post your messages. No one minds helping you, but at least demonstrate you have tried. As far as the podcast is concerned I am truly unclear as to how you become more confused. You talk about how it is not the way you learn, so then explain how you do learn. You cannot expect folks on the list to know your learning style and sit down to write mini tutorials with "step 1 open the application" etc. If that is what you want then say so, otherwise how does anyone know how to feed you information. So I guess I'll just be to lazy to lower myself to help you in the future and your crappy attitude certainly took care of that. Good luck, you're going to need it. Re: Why can't someone just answer my Ical question without confusing me with a pod cast?
If I knew where to look for that information I wouldn't inconvenience anyone with my question. As far as wanting to be spoon fed, I can't help if I've tried to learn things by pod casts and it completely overwhelms me and I end up more frustrated and confused than I started out. If that's the way people feel on this list, then tell me then, what is this list for then if we can't ask simple questions and get simple answers. If I'm going to be treated in this manner, I'll just not ask anything and consider unsubscribing to this list altogether if it is too inconvenient for me to ask questions without just being handed a pod cast. That, in my opinion, is taking the lazy way out anyway, cause it prevents you from having to lower yourself to answer such a simple and insignificant question. Again, what is this list for if you can't get simple and understandable answers to simple questions. If I wanted a pod cast, I would've looked one up. Excuse me for bothering those of you that are just too good to answer my simple question. Again, I'll just not say anything and again, if I can't get answers to simple questions, but others do't get treated that way, then this list will certainly leave my inbox. Re: Why can't someone just answer my Ical question without confusing me with a pod cast?
Have you tried reading the help files? THey contain a lot of information and there is also Google. You really expect someone to produce a step-by-step tutorial on iCal just for you? No offense, but it seems to me that you have not researched the questions very thoroughly on your own and just want to be spoon-fed the information. Asking for help is fine and encouraged, but it seems that you would ask only when you have already tried finding the answers elsewhere. There are plenty of resources and the podcast someone suggested is a great way to learn how to use an app. Of course then you seem to get cross with folks because they won't just give you what you want when you want it and I hope you understand you are being unfair to those who are providing you the resources. Why can't someone just answer my Ical question without confusing me with a pod cast?
I need to know what those lists like friends and family, and stuff are for. I don't understand all that stuff, though I did learn how to delete a reminder. I have a list of reminders and all of them are coming up though I thought I had other reminders. I don't see any old ones though. Anyway, Pod Casts give me too much information at one time and a lot of it I already know, or don't understand in the first place cause it's too advanced for me, or doesn't tell me what I need till my mind is so overloaded that I can't absorb any more information. Anyway, could someone just tell me in baby steps what all that is for and if you have my number, just call if you want to. Re: Ical question
Thanks for this tip. I notice that working pretty well except that as i command-right-arrow through dates, if there is an event on a particular date, voiceover doesn't tell me that fact unless i move back to the events list. It would be nice if there were some indication. I wonder if there is some voiceover setting or other trick that could be employed to get this info spoken. Re: Ical question
Hello Marc, To create a new event in iCal, press Cmd-n then type something like: "Dental appointment on Friday March 2nd at 3:30 pm", then press Return. iCal will format the event for you and you can add bits or change things by navigating right to the scroll area, where you interact. Here you'll find all the possible fields, including the menu for selecting the appropriate calendar. To go to a particular date, press Cmd-Shift-t and start typing the date you want. iCal will autofill the field and you can adjust it to what you want, then press Return. To look at the week's events, interact with the grid. Navigate using the VO keys and you'll hear something like Monday 2 events. Tuesday list. Where it just says List, there are no events. To look at the events on a particular day, interact with the list. HTH, Anne -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Oh Mark, I just realise that I have been talking about the address book. Please forgive me for that as I must have been very tired when I wrote that first message and I had been in my address book yesterday and thought it was the calendar for no good reason. I found that choice by accident when doing VO right arrow once I got past the contacts table (not in the view menu) either. There is a list view or a table group, it's radio buttons. Re: Creating Calendars in iCal Question
Sarai, I do not have any problems with creating and changing the names of calendars. Follow these steps: 1. Go to the menu/File/New Calendar (a submenu). 2. Choose where you want the calendar. 3. The popover appears and you need to interact with the calendar table. 4. Navigate to Column two and interact with the "Untitled" name. 5. Begin typing over or erase and insert your own text. I hope that helps. On Oct 21, 2011, at 12:38 PM, Sarai Bucciarelli wrote: > Hi guys: > When I attempt to create a new Calendar, It just says "untitled." I cannot > create a title for my calendar. 1. Are you sure that the timezone is set for your location? 2. You could change the time in advance that you want to be notified. 3. You could (though I don't particularily recommend it) set up a notification that calls an APpleScript. That Apple Script could minumize all windows or use the "say" function to talk to you for example. Jon Jonathan C. Re: ical question
Hi there. I am not fully adept at customizing iCal myself at this point, but can work it well enough to make good use of it anyway. To create an event, just press command-n, and then press command-E to edit the new event. There, you can give it a title, location, date/time, set alarms, etc. Just tab to Done when you are through, and the new event will automatically sort itself into the correct place on your calendar. Just a quick note from my own experience, when tabbing through the Edit Event box, the list boxes for the month, date, year and time do not read automatically. Once I tab to a field that doesn't read, I just use my arrow keys to get voiceover to announce the highlighted selection in the list. -- Jenny Wood Phone: (972) 989-3894 Email: kc5...@gmail.com Facebook/Twitter/Skype: kc5gni On Dec 30, 2010, at 10:16 PM, denise avant wrote: > hi all, > i wanted to try my hand at ical, but do not see the box where you enter the > beginning and ending time for appointments. as for the settings i switched to > the day view as opposed to the week view. are there any other settings i > should change to more effectively use ical? > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "MacVisionaries" group. > To post to this group, send email to macvisionar...@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > macvisionaries+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries?hl=en. > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: An iCal Question
Hi all, thanx for this summary steps. I am using ical for a 2 months and, it's works it has some limits: - how can I clean the appointments that are past? - the functions, go to date and go to today (command+t or command+shift+t) are not working with vo: is see no result. - I use monthview, the best for us I think but: there are still some days of the following month in this view. I mean: with vo+arrows, I go to the different appointments and with command+right/left arrow, I go to the next/prev mont. When I am in a mont, I can still see some days of the next month. This is confusing... - the buttons: reveal, dismiss or snooze are not translated in the languages: I use dutch as interface-language. Any hints are welcome! thanx in advance, William Op 19-aug-2010, om 22:01 heeft Scott Howell het volgende geschreven: > Mark, > > Follow these steps, I think it will help you. > > 1. command-n to create a new event. > 2. command-i for inspector. > 3. you first are on the title of the event, navigate right with VO and > interact with the details scroll area. > 4. first field is location, followed by all day checkbox, then you encounter > as you navigate to the right, the "From" field. Mark, Follow these steps, I think it will help you. 1. command-n to create a new event. 2. command-i for inspector. 3. you first are on the title of the event, navigate right with VO and interact with the details scroll area. 4. first field is location, followed by all day checkbox, then you encounter as you navigate to the right, the "From" field. (NOTE: make sure the all day checkbox is not checked. If it is, you will not see the time in the date field. You instead will only see the date.) 5. Navigate to the right until you hear the date and interact to set the date/time. 6. Next will be the end date/time. (NOTE: again, make sure the all day checkbox is not checked or you will only see the date, not the hours.) 7. Next you may have a timezone popup assuming you have set this option in preferences. 8. You will encounter the "Repeat" options. 9. Show as option. 10. Calendar (On which calendar the event is to be recorded). 11. Alarm/notification options follow. 12. Another alarm option. 13. Hi, What I am saying is that I cannot find the Start and End time fields. Yes, I know this is hard to believe but, I swear, I cannot locate these fields. All I can find is the Start and Ending date fields. The steps I am taking to create a new event are: 1. >From within iCal, while focused on the Canvas area, I Tap Command+N. 2. This brings up a New Event Text Box in which I type in the Appointment Info such as Eye Doctor Appointment. 3. Then, I open the Inspector and enter more details including the Start and End Dates. Nowhere do I see the Start and Ending Time fields. Clearly there is another way to create a new event but I don't know what it is. Thank you all for helping me on this one. Re: An iCal Question
Sara I do not understand your question. If he is interacting with the date/time field, the values in the field change and VO will verbalize the information. If I understand Mark correctly, he wants to see some field/information that indicates the length of an event. If that is so, there is no such field to the best of my knowledge. Actually if you are looking at an event, which has already been created, the to and from fields are the only fields I suspect you will see. So, whether you are creating or viewing an event, the to/from fields seem to be the only indicators of date/time.
