RE: Smart TV

2017-08-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah the chrome cast ultra is so much nicer than the chrome cast 1.

I couldn’t get my chrome cast to work properly but this new ultra is great.

I did have a somewhat problematic question at setup / config.

The google home app asks you to confirm the number on your tv screen,

I’m stuffed if I know what it said so I took a stab and said yeah it was the
number on the screen

Would appear I got it correct.

Yes shouldn’t be a problem. All my boxes including Apple TV, Amazon TV and
Chrome Cast can wake up a Samsung TV via cdmi control data.

Does anybody know if Samsung TV's have this in their options menus. I can
control volume via HDMI so one would expect that power should also be able to
be controlled.

Hi ET,

Ok so over xmas new year this year I spent a few weeks looking into accessible

Unlike in the USA UK and austrailia Samsung have removed the voice guidance

later models.

I located a 2015 UHD 4K 55inch screen with all and more than I wanted.

I can't say I'm a fan of the in built features such as Netflix and the
webbrowser but he screen reader is great as it lets me set the device up myself.

As for auto switching
Yeah sure does,

When I press a button on my apple tv Gen 4 remote the tv switchs on and to the
HDMI channel the atv is connected to,

My blue ray player does the same thing when I press eject to open the tray and
put my disk in,

I can't get my chrome cast to do this though, however I don't use it a lot so
don't worry about ti,

The only real issues I have with the auto switching is when I want to listen to
music through my ATV it turns the tv on also

A pain in the a when you don't need a picture or even have one this I didin't
need to worry about when I had the gen 3 as I used optical to connect to the
sound system.

RE: Smart TV

2017-08-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,

I don’t remember having to set anything up on my tv it was a case of plug /
connect the apple tv’s to the Samsung tv and now anytime I hit my apple tv’s
remote the tv comes on to my HDMI channel 2, I’ve got my blueray plugged in to
HDMI 1 and my new chrome cast ultra in HDMI 4 and all of them start the tv
automatically when I activate them.

My apple tv 2gen also did this with it’s remote as well.

RE: Smart TV

2017-08-18 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi ET,

 Sorry fo rthe delay.

Ok so over xmas new year this year I spent a few weeks looking into accessible
tv's here in NZ,

Unlike in the USA UK and austrailia Samsung have removed the voice guidance
feature or screen reader from their NZ model devices, at least in the 2016 and
later models.

I located a 2015 UHD 4K 55inch screen with all and more than I wanted.

I can't say I'm a fan of the in built features such as Netflix and the
webbrowser but he screen reader is great as it lets me set the device up myself.

 As for auto switching
Yeah sure does,

When I press a button on my apple tv Gen 4 remote the tv switchs on and to
the HDMI channel the atv is connected to,

My blue ray player does the same thing when I press eject to open the tray and
put my disk in,

I can't get my chrome cast to do this though, however I don't use it a lot so
don't worry about ti,

The only real issues I have with the auto switching is when I want to listen
to music through my ATV it turns the tv on also

A pain in the a when you don't need a picture or even have one this I didin't
need to worry about when I had the gen 3 as I used optical to connect to the
sound system.

Hope this somewhat helps.-Original Message-

Re: Smart TV

2017-08-13 Thread E.T.
I have not found the specs yet on the models that support Voice
Guide.Do all the smart tv models have it or just the larger screen size
models? I need to stay at 43 or smaller. I found the 6200 within my
price range but have to find its specs.

As far as models, you probably don’t want the ones I bought because of the
price but the ones I’m familiar with are the 7500, 8500 and 9500 series which
are basically different screen technologies with them all being 4K but the 9500
model hs quantum dots which is a much more accurate generator of pixels. That

Good luck.

Re: Smart TV

2017-08-13 Thread Scott Granados
Gary, Bosh is a great detective series with a main character named Hary Bosh.
It’s very very gritty and rough around the edges but that adds to the
attraction. Big show with actual detectives and police officers do to the
accuracy. There’s been 3 seasons already and I suggest you binge them all.
The Grand Tour is a show by the 3 guys from Top Gear, Richard Hamond,
Jeremy Clarkson and James May. After Jeremy got fired from Top Gear Amazon
came along and funded them and they put out a new show which has the same
chemistry and great humor that Top Gear did. I think both shows have a 5 star
rating, they definitely do with me. There’s a lot on there though that’s
great. Man in the High Castle, Sneaky Pete, a bunch of good stuff. Definitely
check out that prime content.

That switcher might be useful. Since my TV is so old though, I will
see about a new one. I am also considering disconnecting the DVD units
so would only have the Apple TV anyway.

I have both my Mac mini and a bluray player connected and it
automatically switches to the highest numbered active input. So the Mac
is on port one, which means that by default it is usually sent to the
display. The BluRay is on port 2 so when I turn it on the HDMI is
automatically switched to that. After we're done watching a movie or the
like I turn the BluRay player off and it switches back to the Mac. I
have a slightly different unit than the link above because I needed one
that splits out the audio to a separate TOSlink cable for my ancient
Denon sound system that predates HDMI.

Boy those for me sure are high end. Many of the ones I quickly
looked at are too big. 32 inch or 40 would suit me. Will keep looking.

And yes you most certainly can handle it if the AV control protocol isn’t
enabled on the box you’re attaching.

As far as models, you probably don’t want the ones I bought because of the
price but the ones I’m familiar with are the 7500, 8500 and 9500 series which
are basically different screen technologies with them all being 4K but the 9500
model hs quantum dots which is a much more accurate generator of pixels. That
being said you may not want to go so high end. What you want to insure is what
ever Samsung you go with it supports Voice Guide or they also call it
accessibility features.

Good luck.

the cord cutting approach got all the channels I could off the other providers
like you tube tv, hoolu tv, sling, and sony has a package and I got all the
channels that I wanted in an ala cart bundle with out having to pay what
direct tv and the uverse giga power giga bit connection bundle would have cost
me. I got all this for under $300 which if I did the giga power bundle with
direct tv iwas looking north of $550 with everything a month .at this point
aht was not wfor me but just letting you thatthese hight band width connection
and all the tv that you can stomach is going ot cost you a pricy bundle as
well.

Re: Smart TV and PBS

2017-08-11 Thread Jonathan Cohn
ET,

>From what my wife says, the premium content allows you to view most content
that PBS has recently produced while the standard level lets you see the
two most recent shows. In the DC area contributing $60 to the station on
an annual basis provides you with the premium level. While HBO is between
$120 and $180 so all in all not that bad a deal.

Best Wishes,

Re: Smart TV

2017-08-11 Thread Mary Otten
Yes. Pressing a button on the remote for the device that you want to switch to
switches it there. It will even turn the TV on if the TV is off. I have
DirecTV, and Amazon fire stick, and fourth generation Apple TV. I can't speak
to the third generation one. Also, it seems to me that this ability to do this
switching when you punch a button on the remote started happening after a
recent firmware update. Why that should be, I haven't a clue. I will have to
get the model number for you, as I don't remember it. And my sided partner is
still sleeping. I am Magine my TV was on the opposite end of the Samsung
spectrum from Scott. It is not 4K. And I think it's only a 32 inch screen. I do
have a nice sound bar for it. I got it on sale at Best Buy sometime around the
holidays. Quite honestly, if I were going to buy a TV now, I would want to know
a lot more about the new Amazon TV set. I'm really impressed with the work that
they're doing over there with voiceview. I think it has the best sound, and is
the most flexible. But I don't know about the capability of the actual TV to do
the thing you want to do. If That worked, and I were buying a TV now, I would
not hesitate to get the Amazon one.

Good luck.

Re: Smart TV

2017-08-11 Thread Scott Granados
E.T., on my unit you have something called the smart hub. It has all your
connections and apps in an easy to use section that you use your left and right
arrows to select. Then you press OK or enter on the one you want to choose.
Then when you’re done you either hit the home key and go back to the smart hub
or hit exit on the app or source you’re in and get again back to this hub
feature.
Your smart remote which is super simple also programs itself on setup
for all your other devices so when you’re done one remote runs everything, you
can ditch all the others. I should really do a podcast on this because I’m
quite blown away by how well it works.

Re: Smart TV

2017-08-11 Thread Scott Granados
So 3rd gen doesn’t have apps I don’t think the model I speak of is the one that
had internal memory and runs actual IOS or TVOS apps. Just for completeness
and accuracy.

Good luck.

Mary,
Do you have the model number? With the Apple TV, if you want to
switch back to it, what triggers that? Pressing a button on the remote?

It depends if you have HDMI control messages enabled on both the TV and the end
device supports it. I can confirm Samsung does this with the Gen 4 Apple TV
