Whoa boy, I think you’re both on to something. I think the best game plan is

Hey Scott,

One caveat I would add here is that it depends on how important portability is.
the Air is much nicer to carry around, especially if you're also hauling a
braille display. Just something to consider. I chose the Air over the Pro for
its portability, not due to cost.

Hey Scott,

One caveat I would add here is that it depends on how important portability is.
the Air is much nicer to carry around, especially if you're also hauling a

RE: What shall I get? Any recommendations?

2016-05-20 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Tracey,

I fully agree about performance of the mac books, as for the mac minis
I’ve got a 2012 device but I’d have to be forced I think to get the new ones as
they don’t have any way now of allowing us to update or upgrade things such as
ram or harddrives,

They’ve started making them like the other devices where it has to be built in
house

But still a bloody good little device.

I wanted to reiterate something here. I’ve had my MBA since Summer 2011.
Nearly 5 years and it’s performance feels no different from the day I started
it up. This continues to amaze me. Four or five years into my Windows laptop,
I was itching for a new one, because it just felt sluggish and out of date.

As another side note, the Mac Mini has been tempting me for years. It grabs me
more than buying an iMac.

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the world of Mac and Apple.

Your first statement about wanting a machine that will last you years without
becoming obsolete, well that’s any mac book you get really so long as you look
after it!

I’m using a mid 2013 mac book air which I had custom built with 8 gig ram, and
512 gb SSD, with I7 processor,
With an apple warrenty extended to 3 years It cost me new zealdn dollars
2800.00.

And I run windows 10 on it via bootcamp
It’s just as fast as my mac mini server which is also custom built with highest
specs available at the time it was purchased in 2014.

The mac book air is to me the best value for money as it gives you higher specs
for processor ram and SSD drive than the 12inch mac book

But there is available I believe a 13inch mac book pro with optical drive 500GB
drive and 4GB ram
This is the older style so thicker and heavier but you can put up to 16 gb
ram, and increase the harddrive size or make it ssd if you have the need to do
so,
I did this myself to one at the start of last year and it’s going great and
apart from weight it’s running quicker than my air with a 480gb ssd and 16gb
ram and I5 processor.

Really it comes down to what you wish to spend and custom build is a great
option because you can future proof to your best abilities out of factory, you
can’t change anything once you have the machine in your hands unless it’s the
13inch with Optical drive.

Good luck finding your new toy.

Re: What shall I get? Any recommendations?

2016-05-20 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Problem with the Mac Mini is that they seriously undermined it when going from
quad-core to dual-core. Sure, it’s still a fabbo Mac, and I bought one to run
headless and could probably use it as a replacement for my desktop if the need
arose, and it’s still an excellent starter Mac. But it no longer threatens the
iMac or Mac Pro and is no longer upgradable and that’s a great shame.

And Chris,

I’ll just add either way, I’d have a mac book pro if the prices for them in NZ
were within my range.
But $4000 NZ $ is a bit high for me.

Good luck you’ll be buying a great device what ever you get.

Chris, with all this discussion I don’t want you to get the idea the macbook
pro is a big boat anchor or anything. The new 13 and 15 inch Macbook Pro
retina laptops are very light for what you get. It’s all SSD now so there’s no
heavy hard drive and the battery is built in and light. The air is just super
thin and really stylish but both are great and very portable.

Hi Cait,

Mostly the form factor. I find the Air to be fast enough for my needs, so
prefer the smaller, lighter unit.

I agree about the missing control key. I also wish Mac laptop keyboards had
Home and End Keys - I find those keystrokes ridiculously impossible to perform.

I wanted to reiterate something here. I’ve had my MBA since Summer 2011.
Nearly 5 years and it’s performance feels no different from the day I started

As another side note, the Mac Mini has been tempting me for years. It grabs me

Re: What shall I get? Any recommendations?

2016-05-19 Thread Scott Granados
Chris, with all this discussion I don’t want you to get the idea the macbook
pro is a big boat anchor or anything. The new 13 and 15 inch Macbook Pro
retina laptops are very light for what you get. It’s all SSD now so there’s no
heavy hard drive and the battery is built in and light. The air is just super
thin and really stylish but both are great and very portable.

Thanks Simon,

I am leaning to the 13 inch macbook pro. I do not care much about weight,
since I rarely carry my laptops around, probably two or three times a year at
best.

2016-05-19 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna & Scott,

Donna I have the same air as you have and yes portability was one of the
leading factors but power was the next hence the reason to upgrade to top specs
for 11 inch air.

However if they start this year producing air devices with the mobile
processors then I will be looking at the pros first.

I’d love to think though that they will go with the air being able to run 16
Gig ram, 1TB SSD and a full I7 processor, ut guessing I’m dreaming that one.

Hey Scott,

One caveat I would add here is that it depends on how important portability is.
the Air is much nicer to carry around, especially if you're also hauling a
braille display. Just something to consider. I chose the Air over the Pro for
its portability, not due to cost.
Cheers,

That aside, with your requirement I’d probably go with an Apple Macbook pro and
you could go with a 13 inch model to save on the cost if you wanted. There are
both i5 and i7 options for processors so you could spend as much as you wanted
there, memory options and all SSD. The air is a bit less expensive but when in
best buy the other day they had an air and a pro at the exact same price so
with all things equal I’d go with a pro model.
I would also budget $100 or so for VMWare fusion for running that
windows instance on top of OS X. It’s in my mind preferable to boot camp since
you have both options at the same time, others may disagree.

That’s my suggestion.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

RE: What shall I get? Any recommendations?

2016-05-19 Thread Simon Fogarty

Sarah,

I was thinking of the same thing, especially after I read the other thread
about the new releases. I was thinking that may be the current sixth
generation macbooks price would go down to open the way for the sale of the
seventh generation.

While we are on this topic, Do you recommend an audio tutorial or some text
files for a complete mac novice? I like to read a little or listen to some
tutorials so that when I get my laptop I would know where to start.

Cheers,

Cris

because I like new toys. :) It is in no way obsolete. I did however, spend
the extra money to max out the specs. One thing about the air is that what you
buy is what you will have for the rest of the life of the computer. So the
time to add extra storage or memory, is when you purchase the unit. I started
out on a MacBook Pro, but have been very happy having switched to the Air.

+1 to this point, I do not like the fact the laptops aren’t user upgradable any
more either. I had a 2011 model that I put 32GB of memory in and a 1TB SSD and
it’s still very useful today. I also bought the memory and SSD from a 3rd
party for pennies on the dollar. This is probably the real reason the user
upgradable parts went away.

I currently own a mid 2014 maxed out configuration MacBook Pro retina.
Personally I am liking it’s fluidity and speed obviously from what I ‘ve pid
for, but for easy web browsing the Air should do its finest job. The only
concern that i have is that I had to get the large screen Mac as suppose to
smaller option because of specs. I could have just custom ordered one but the
stock order was nice and quick. Something else that I am not happy about is the
fact that these new macs don’t have upgradable internals unlike the older
models, but slimmer design and a bit lighter weight makes up for it.

This is clearly dependent on what your needs are, and the answer is different
based on who you ask.

I concur with those suggesting the Air. The single-port MacBook has a strong
probability of near-term obsolescence. Then again, the Air is probably due for
obsolescence by the same MacBook, so you’re buying for specs, not style. The
upside there is that the cost is lower, but the downside is you’ll still pay
more for bumping the specs all the way up, which I strongly suggest you do.

But, I was one of those who went from an Air to a Pro. Especially if you want
to do lots of virtualisation, the Pro really comes into its own. With a
quad-core processor and up to 16 GB of RAM, it really helps. If you only run
one OS at a time, though, an Air ought to be fine.

Don’t forget the Mac Mini. It’s a small-form-factor desktop computer. If
you’re only buying for portability, this is an option.

Re: What shall I get? Any recommendations?

2016-05-18 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu

2016-05-18 Thread Scott Granados
Your air will run windows under VM fusion. you have the I7 processor which
will help and you could assign 2GB or less to the virtual machine and it should
work fairly well. If I were to buy a new air I’d max it out not just for
windows but because once you buy it it’s a fixed configuration you can’t update.

Good luck.

Hi Cait,

Mostly the form factor. I find the Air to be fast enough for my needs, so
prefer the smaller, lighter unit.

I agree about the missing control key. I also wish Mac laptop keyboards had
Home and End Keys - I find those keystrokes ridiculously impossible to perform.
Cheers,

Hey Scott,

One caveat I would add here is that it depends on how important portability is.
the Air is much nicer to carry around, especially if you're also hauling a
braille display. Just something to consider. I chose the Air over the Pro for
its portability, not due to cost.

I find this interesting, I was thinking of refreshing my laptops as well and
was looking at that air. They had a pro for the same price though so I’m
having a hard time justifying the air but boy I’m with you I like the super
thin form factor. Especially with the recent refresh of the MacBooks, that 6th

So I’m not sure what country you’re in or store options you have, Best Buy in
the US is running laptop deals right now and I think it’s $100 or more off
Apple Laptops.

What do you like about the air over the pro??

Just wondering. I myself own a macbook air, with maxed out specs, and I love
the thing! I do miss the control key on the right, though, sometimes, but none
of the apple laptops have that, so I’ve just gotten used to not having it..

2016-05-18 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
A macbook air might be what you want.
Its not that pricey and has enough power to not drive you crazy in any case.
Get one with 8 gb ram and you’ll be fine.

Re: What shall I get? Any recommendations?

2016-05-18 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Cris,

the MacBook Air would be my recommendation. It's light and small, very easy to
carry around. It's plenty fast for browsing the web. I've had my Air since
2013. I may replace it this year or next, but as much as anything that's
because I like new toys.
Cheers,
Donna
