Re: iPod has gone corrupted

2009-04-09 Thread Esther
Hi Dave,

Reformatting is done in iTunes. I've never had my iPod settings
window completely disappear, but I'd guess this is like setting up the
new Nano 4G from scratch -- the area is reached by doing a VO-Right
arrow from the sources table past the splitter to an area that
originally shows up as unknown, and you have to interact with it in
order to see things. When the settings menu doesn't disappear there
is a button to restore or reformat the iPod that you press (VO-
Space). What model iPod do you have? The other thing that I've done
(with my Nano 4G) was look at it when connected in Finder. The files
are normally hidden, but I had changed this with one of my maintenance
facility tools. (I wanted to see where the spoken menu snippets were
stored, and found I could QuickLook them). You could also try
resetting your iPod before reconnecting. Exactly how you do this will
depend on your iPod model, but it usually involves toggling the hold
switch on and off (on the Nano this means you push it to the right,
away from the left edge of the iPod to the locked position, and then
back to the left to the unlocked position), and then pressing the menu
(12-o'clock position on the wheel) and select (center of the wheel)
buttons simultaneously. This is hard to do with your fingers on
something as small as the Nano; I had to put it on a flat surface and
use either a small screwdriver or a pen or pencil to press down on
each point and hold it down for several seconds to reset. There's
nothing audible about this. (I had to do this on the older 1G model
Nano; I've never had to reset my 4G Nano.)

Once again, the reformatting is handled in iTunes, not in Disk Utility.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: iPod has gone corrupted

2009-04-09 Thread Dave Wright
Good morning ester,
Thank you for your advice thus far. I've currently got the Nano 4G. As for the
settings, I really don't understand it. I've tried VO arrowing to the right of
the vertical splitter and cannot see any area to interact with for settings, so
I can't even access the restore button. I'll attempt to use the steps you
mentioned for performing a reset to see if that works. Thus far, I've tried
rebooting the device with no results. I really don't want to take this to the
genius bar if I don't have to.

Thanks Ryan for the advice. I'm going to try this now. One thing I'm confused

As for the apple store. I do in fact have one or 2 in Austin , Tx. I really

Oh, I have an idea of what may be happening.

Do you have the nano? YOu can put it into a restore mode by doing the
following. Without sighted assistance this may be a bit of a challenge.

  1. Hold the select (center of the wheel) and the menu (top of the wheel) down
together for about 10 seconds. Release and hold again if the iPod does nothing.
You should hear a pop in your headphones, or the music your playing should
suddenly cut off. While I'm writing this, that may be the best way to do it,
play something so you know when you have a successful reboot.
  2. Immediately release your command and press instead select and play/pause
together. If you're successful, the resotre screen will show up. In your case,
the best way to know if you've got it right is to wait and see after about two
minutes if running your finger around the click wheel makes clicks. If it does,
you need to start over again, it booted and missed the opportunity to get into
restore mode.
  3. Once in restore mode, connect your iPod to your computer.

Now, your iPod should show up as normal. Restore it from the settings pane.
If not, it for sure will show up in Disk Utility where a restore can be
performed after formatting the internal disk.

You didn't answer one of my questions, got an Apple Store near where you
live? If you're not sure, visit http://www.apple.com/retail and run through the
store listings. There is a quick pop-up where you choose your state and then
choose a store. I don't know where you live, but I'm assuming the United
States. If not, there is a full store listing that includes world wide
locations as well.

In the nano fourth gen. you press down on the top and the bottom of
the wheel simultaniously for six seconds then wait about ten seconds
counting slowly and press the middle of the wheel. There is no audio
feedback for this. My husband did it last night when my Ipod crashed
and it turned back on just fine but my songs were lost and I had to
resync.

Re: iPod has gone corrupted

2009-04-09 Thread Esther
Hi Peggy,

It's actually the top and center of the wheel that you need to press
simultaneously. This is somewhat unintuitive, so I had to check the
manual again:

To reset iPod nano:
1 Toggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back
again).
2 Press and hold the Menu and Center buttons for at least 6 seconds,
until the
Apple logo appears.

The menu button is at the top of the wheel. I'm glad you got things
working. Did the instructions I sent off list of using VO-Up arrow
twice to get to the sync field information work for you?

Cheers,

Esther

Oh, I have an idea of what may be happening.

Do you have the nano? YOu can put it into a restore mode by doing
the following. Without sighted assistance this may be a bit of a
 challenge.

 1. Hold the select (center of the wheel) and the menu (top of the
wheel) down together for about 10 seconds. Release and hold again
if the iPod does nothing. You should hear a pop in your
headphones, or the music your playing should suddenly cut off.
While I'm writing this, that may be the best way to do it, play
something so you know when you have a successful reboot.
 2. Immediately release your command and press instead select and
play/pause together. If you're successful, the resotre screen will
show up. In your case, the best way to know if you've got it right
is to wait and see after about two minutes if running your finger
around the click wheel makes clicks. If it does, you need to start
over again, it booted and missed the opportunity to get into
 restore mode.
 3. Once in restore mode, connect your iPod to your computer.

Now, your iPod should show up as normal. Restore it from the
settings pane. If not, it for sure will show up in Disk Utility
where a restore can be performed after formatting the internal disk.

You didn't answer one of my questions, got an Apple Store near
where you live? If you're not sure, visit http://www.apple.com/retail
and run through the store listings. There is a quick pop-up where
you choose your state and then choose a store. I don't know where
you live, but I'm assuming the United States. If not, there is a
full store listing that includes world wide locations as well.

Got iTunes 8.1.1? Try that out. Also, you could reformat the iPod
which will force it into recovery mode and really force a

Re: iPod has gone corrupted

2009-04-09 Thread Alex Jurgensen
Hi,

Here is the official Apple way on at least the Nano 3rd and 4th
Generation.

1. Hold down the centre button and the Menu button which is on the
top for twenty-five seconds and wait 30 Seconds. This will not loose
any songs.

Thanks,
Alex,

In the nano fourth gen. you press down on the top and the bottom of
the wheel simultaniously for six seconds then wait about ten seconds
counting slowly and press the middle of the wheel. There is no audio
feedback for this. My husband did it last night when my Ipod crashed
and it turned back on just fine but my songs were lost and I had to
 resync.

connected in Finder. The files are normally hidden, but I had
changed this with one of my maintenance facility tools. (I wanted
to see where the spoken menu snippets were stored, and found I
could QuickLook them). You could also try resetting your iPod
before reconnecting. Exactly how you do this will depend on your
iPod model, but it usually involves toggling the hold switch on and
off (on the Nano this means you push it to the right, away from the
left edge of the iPod to the locked position, and then back to the
left to the unlocked position), and then pressing the menu (12-
o'clock position on the wheel) and select (center of the wheel)
buttons simultaneously. This is hard to do with your fingers on
something as small as the Nano; I had to put it on a flat surface
and use either a small screwdriver or a pen or pencil to press down
on each point and hold it down for several seconds to reset.
There's nothing audible about this. (I had to do this on the older
1G model Nano; I've never had to reset my 4G Nano.)

Once again, the reformatting is handled in iTunes, not in Disk
 Utility.
