Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-29 Thread Thomas
Trust me, your hearing doesn't have to be compromised to screw those
things up, mine's pretty good, but a certain large searchengine and
it's e-mail service is just bad because of all of the backwards junk
they play with it.Wouldn't say my hearing is great but by the
numbers it's average and do have a pretty good ability to zone out a
lot of noise and focus on what I need to hear, but some of those as I
said are just bad.

getting them solved. I also don't understand the purpose of
screwing up the audio so that those of us with compromised hearing
don't even have a chance?

Well, let me say this. I did indeed hear that he is ill. I suspect,
though, that it wasn't helping the blind that made him sick. Perhaps it
was some underlying condition. What ever the case may be, I do hope he
gets well. By way of personal reflection, I can't help but wonder what
we Mac users can do to effect a software based solution. Sorry,
installing windows seems like a cop out to me.

Has anybody here noticed that Solona seems never to be available during

I guess it's pretty odious work. I tried to recruit volunteers for him a while
back. I know people who for various reasons have free time and actually needed
something to occupy themselves, but they really balked when it came to solving
captchas. One friend actually said that she has a hard enough time solving
them for herself, and wouldn't want to be responsible for solving them for
others.

Hi folks,

his message here:

Best,

Dear All,

It has recently come to the attention of me that Bernard who tirelessly has
worked on our communities behalf through his efforts with Solona.net has fallen
ill... the exacting nature of his illness is not known, however, as many of you
have commented his efforts in helping us through all manner of adaptive tech
requires recognition, not to mention our support at what is no doubt a
difficult time right now.

We have a mailing address for Bernard and shall be posting a get well card to
him in a week or so.

If you would like to have your name printed and placed on the card, please send
a message to;

serv...@talknav.com

with the subject line of Solona Card.

please only do this in the following format:

first, last names followed by a §-§ and then your country of residence.

We regret that we cannot print additional messages, as the card would turn into
a book, so only your name and country shall be printed.

If you can spread the word as quickly as possible, as we would like to get the
card off as soon as we can.

How about some of these so-called brilliant people who depend on capchias to
block 'bots or fake entries being required to provide the solution. I wonder
how quickly things would change if any website using them was required to
provide an accessible means of getting them solved. I also don't understand
the purpose of screwing up the audio so that those of us with compromised
hearing don't even have a chance?

If you know anything of unix commands you should be fine. And the only thing
you'd want it for anyway is firefox which can be accessed threw the menu

Is there any way we can send him well wishes or something? I have tried
emailing him, but that hasn't gotten a response, probably because the
poor fella is sick. Does anybody have a contact where we can send him
cards or some such?

It breaks my heart. I wouldn't be surprised if he became ill. The man
was staying up to solve captchas. I told him to not do that because one
needs sleep to be well. But he probably did it anyway.

That, I guess, is one of the drawbacks to a human based solution like

Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-25 Thread Justin Ekis
Wow. This is very sad indeed. I've never heard anything about this before. I
certainly hope he gets well.

As hard as he was already working on the captcha solution service, he had
expanded into other areas and it seemed like things were doing very well. In
fact, just over a week ago I ordered one of his tactile screen protectors for
my new iPod touch. This would explain why I never even received any
confirmation. I was starting to be frustrated, but if he's ill I'm not even
going to worry about that.

It's possible that this is beginning to get off topic for the list, but I would
like to share one last thought. If this is correct, The community really should
make some effort to contact him. This individual is doing tremendous things for
the blind community and we should demonstrate that we care about his wellbeing
in return. First, where did you hear this news? There's nothing on the blog or
twitter account, but I wouldn't really expect anything, given the situation.
I'd just like to see the original list post and determine if there's an
authoritative source or just rumors floating around the internet. One of the
last posts on twitter from late October just says that he's been too busy to
use twitter very much. If you have a link for a list archive or can forward the
post itself, send it to me off list.

at the time I hated and still hate using the terminal no spaces unless the
script has them but hopefully someone who remembers how to do this more then me
can help. I use a script called clisk and so my syntax would be

./clisk

followed by enter and with luck it should start up.

keep in mind you might need to change to the dir solona is in so

cd ~/home/solona

then run the script.

Take care.

Re: Solona command line

2010-06-13 Thread Kevin Mattingly
I don't really know what solona is but if you're in the command line for the
mac, you use cd for (change directory) like in dos. When you use the terminal
program, you're in the home directory for your user ID. In that directory are
folders or directories like downloads, documents and so on. If you want to go
to one of those directories, you'd use cd documents or downloads or whatever
the directory name is. To get help in this command line, use the command man
and then the command you want to use. Examples are man ls (List Directory), Man
cp (copy files), man mv (move files). These are command unix commands for
moving in the directory structure of the Mac. You man be able to use a man -k
command to look up keywords for things you may want to do. If I'm whistling
into the wind here, sorry about that. If not, good luck and I hope this helps.

Re: Solona command line

2010-06-13 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Kev,

Thank you so much. I will try that. Solona is the captcha solving solution for
the Mac. Teresa Ford created a little app that you can run instead of going
through the website to submit your captcha. But so far, I have had no luck in
getting the CMD to recognize the documents folder. Every time I type cmd
Documents, it says it's an invalid command. Oh well, I did get it to work
through the website. Thank you again.

Re: Solona command line

Hi Allison. So I assume you unzipped the file and moved the resulting solona
folder to your documents folder?
If so, open up the terminal and type the following line.
cd Documents/solona
That will put you in the solona folder, and you should be able to follow the
rest of the instructions in the mp3 file.

Hi,

I purchased 2 of the screen protectors for my iPod touch. I have the full
keyboard and the abbreviated versions. I think they can help a person with the
speed and accuracy of their typing. More so the new iPhone/iPad/iPod touch
user. I don't know if these screen protectors will change your friends mind
much. I guess it would depends on why they felt an iPhone wasn't for them to
begin with. If they just didn't like tying on the virtual keyboard on the
screen I think they will help a bit. If they just don't like the UI of the
Apple i products, it probably won't make too much of a difference. I think the
cost of the screen protectors make them worth a shot. I personally like it. I
was looking for screen protectors anyway so why not ones that can help me in
the use of the product?

uninstall it. I just went tot he windows instructions, read them,
followed them, and thats how I get my captchas solved. I would suggest
that you do the same, this way you do not have to use the command
line. The down side to this method would be that you do not know if
you have actually pasted the picture into your paint program or
similar for the mac, but trust me, if you pressed the keys, the
computer did it. I will write a tutorial on this, up it will come in
 about a month or so.

Re: solona

2010-06-05 Thread Cara Quinn
  Olivia;

to adjust the brightness, use either F1 and F2 to lower or raise the brightness
respectively, or add the function key, depending on how you have your function
key settings set.

To take a screen shot simply focus on the window you'd like to take the screen
shot of, making sure your brightness is at 100 percent, and press command shift
3. This will save a screen shot to your desktop which will be aptly labeled
with the words 'screen shot' and a time stamp.

HOpe this helps and have a lovely Saturday night! woohoo!

Smiles,

Cara :)

 1. turn your screen brightness to 100 percent with fn. f2 or f2 depending on
how your keyboard is set up

 2. go to the website where the offending captcha is and hit cmd shift number
 row 3.

 3. by default your screenshot is saved to your desktop so go back to solona,
hit vo space on submit captcha, choose the file and hit the submit button.

 4. Now copy and paste the results in to the field where it is supposed to be
 on the offending site.

that you do the same, this way you do not have to use the command

you have actually pasted the picture into your paint program or
similar for the mac, but trust me, if you pressed the keys, the
computer did it. I will write a tutorial on this, up it will come in
 about a month or so.

I only see the terminal version of Solona, that's the one I've got. Are we

 what you're talking about?

 We need something like that.
