Re: off topic kindle question

2010-12-27 Thread Mike Arrigo
I wonder if the kindle on the web feature is available for the entire book yet,
while this is accessible, there is no excuse whatsoever for Amazon to continue
the half hearted accessibility they are providing.

RE: off topic kindle question

2010-12-27 Thread Sharon Ballantyne
Hi there,

I have been using the kindle for a few months. I needed someone to turn on
the voice guide initally but hav enot required any sighted assistance since
that time.. When purchasing a book make sure it is a book that says text to
speech enabled. I have over one hundred books on my kindle and have only
come across a small handful that were not text to speech enabled.

There are a number of books that are available for free and llways
promotions of books that are free for limited times.

The kindle also allows you to download any sample of any book for free. So
in essence, you can read the chapter to see if you are interested in the
book before you purchase.

I find it easiest to order from the computer rather than using the kindle
itself.

You can turn your wifi off to save power.

The text to speech has two settings for a normal speech rate and a faster
speech rate. I prefer a faster reading speed.

I have also linked my kindle to my audible account so I can read audio books
on the kindle.

I really like being able to buy the latest books of interest rather than
waiting for years for our CNIB library to send it out in audio. Here in
Canada we don't have access to bookshare, NLS or the range of RFB and D so
the books selection might not be as intriguing for those in the USA.

Enjoy the kindle.
Sharon

Subject: off topic kindle question

Hello list; I just got the surprise of my life. my family went and
bought be the latest version of the kindle. I've been doing some
reading, and I'm starting to get encouraged. It has a query keyboard
and the website says it has text to speech and spoken navigation. You
have to get a sighted person to turn it on, but it says it has it. I
have it charging right now and am looking forward to trying it. I
hope it does work as it has a browser in addition to the kindle
features. who knows this puppy may eventually replace my laptop.
doubt it, but it would be cool if it did. will let you know what
happens. take care, Max

Moderator note - IMPORTANT - Please read -was- Re: off topic kindle question

2010-12-26 Thread Cara Quinn
Hello All;

-Two things here:

1 If we can keep this on the topic of the Kindle apps for the iDevices or keep
this somehow Apple-related, then this is fine to continue here, otherwise,
PLEASE DO NOT POST OT NOTES HERE!

2 there's absolutely no need of colorful language in this or really any thread
here. this list is open to all age groups and backgrounds, so I'm asking that
we take it easy on the profanity, K? -Bare in mind that while I personally may
be okay with the occasional very generic hell or damn sort of thing, there are
many on this list whom may not be. So obviously, anything stronger than the
afore mentioned words really should be steered clear of, here as well. -Does
this make sense?…

Thanks a bunch and -hope everyone is having a truly remarkably cool and
wonderful holiday season!

Y'all rock and I'm honored to moderate this list and participate in it witcha!

Smiles,

Cara :)
