BTW, for those interested this shop/site is run by a member of our community :
goshawk on irc; he's too busy with exams (and too polite) to promote it himself;
however, I thought it on-topic here:

Thanks. I think we'll get one. 400 USD plus shipping doesn't seem too
awful.

Hi,

oh very nice, but even more pricey than my solution. And of
course less "hackish" :-)

Hi Murray,

This will most definitely work with the BeagleBoard:
http://elinux.org/Xenarc_USB_touchscreen_for_Beagleboard/OMAP3_EVM

We've got one of those in the office working with a BeagleBoard.
It has DVI input (you'll need a HDMI-to-DVI converter) and a
separate USB connection for the touchscreen.
It's not cheap though.
A minor annoyance - particularly if you are in a hurry - is
that Xenarc will not take foreign (as in non-US)
credit cards so you need to wire them the money before they ship.
Nevertheless I found their customer service responsive and
professional (in dealing with the order). They shipped it
quickly and it came in good shape.

Yes to both. You most likely know that Juha Kallioinen did work on
getting the alpha SDK running on the BeagleBoard
(http://maemo-beagle.garage.maemo.org/). Unfortunately Juha has been
busy with other stuff and hasn't had time to continue working with the
Beagle.

You don't necessarily need a touchscreen, the work Juha did here used a
normal usb mouse and standard monitor with a DVI plug.

The setup Till has is much cooler and more compact though :-)

Hmmm

For a few dollars more you could get a cheap SmartQ 5/7, install Mer on it,
disable Mer and run VNC or just remote X.

presto... untethered display (or use a USB cable for that 20th century feel)

Re: Beagleboard touchscreens?

Hi,

yes, i have built some of these, although the displays themselves
are pretty expensive as they are robust industry quality ones.
It's a 7 inch 800x480 display which i equipped with the necessary
hdmi input and some touchscreen i got from ebay (those EUR 30
things sold to upgrade your eee-pc).

So yes, these definitely work, but they are everything but cheap
and the current EUR/$ exchange rate will also do its thing.

You can find one in this picture from the danish weekend:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/quimgil/3579487812/
and of course here (still without touchscreen, i need to update
that page):

Hi I don't know about a usable touchscreen but
Maemo is also somewhat "usable" without a touchscreen.
it is possible to show the cursor see[1]. of course it doesn't feel right
as the maemo UI is best used on a touchscreen.

I guess it really depends on what your interests are.
a wiimote also sounds like a good HID device to interact with maemo

What I tried during the Danish week-end was to use a camera attached
to the beagle to view a laser pointer on an image displayed with a
beamer and it almost worked... :(
