[Mailman-Users] HTML E-mails

2004-06-09 Thread Chronos Admin
I've setup Mailman and have a few lists running. The one list is an
announcement only list. I need to deliver fully formatted HTML emails.
However, either Mailman or something I'm doing messes up the email.

I searched the Mailman archives and found conflicting comments on whether
Mailman support HTML emails.

In the "Content" settings I have "No" selected for filtering messages. So
what's the official word on HTML emails? Thanks in advance.

That address defaults to the MAILMAN_SITE_LIST value that you set in

If this is your only digested mailing list, you could just change the

periodic digests at noon daily. You could set it for your given day of
the week.

If you have additional digested mailing lists that still need to have
daily periodic (not just thresholded) mailings, you will have to get
more clever and have multiple crontab entries that use the
--listname=mylist switch on senddigests to specify which digests are
processed at which times/days.

the Mailman logs of outgoing messages as compared to the MTA logs, as
well as the cron jobs. You've got a slightly different issue, but
the troubleshooting guidelines at

[Mailman-Users] one dead list (all others fine)

2004-06-09 Thread Peter Saint-Andre
Last week, one of the mailing lists for which I'm an admin stopped
sending out messages (I was gone, so I didn't notice until today). All
the other lists on this same server are functioning properly. The list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) has fairly high volume but so do other lists on the
server. We are running Mailman 2.1.3 (upgraded in February, no troubles
since then, well, other than some posts not being archived -- we'll
leave that for another message) on Debian testing with Postfix. The
perms for this list seem fine (same as other lists on the machine). I
have enabled emergency moderation and posts to the list are now held in
the admin queue, but if I approve a message it does not get distributed
to the list. Neither is mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] delivered to the
list admins. The last timestamp on the mbox file for this list is
2004-06-02T17:17 (no mail sent since then).

I'm puzzled. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

BTW, before sending this mail I did the following:

0. Ran the check_perms script.
1. Verified that cron is running.
2. Checked aliases and ran newaliases.
3. Verified that postfix doesn't use smrsh.
4. Checked interface (other lists working fine).
5. Checked that qrunner is working fine.
6. Checked for locks (none on the offending list).
7. Checked logs but don't see any egregious errors.
8. Cleared out the qfiles.
9. Checked SMTPHOST (other lists working fine).

Since this list is the main list for administrators of Jabber servers
(the IM equivalent of mailman-users, if you will), I'm eager to get it
running again.

Many thanks.

I have figured out something. I can send an email to the list localy
using the username of the list (ie. if is send an email locate to "list"
which the email address would be [EMAIL PROTECTED]). That will go through. So
now it looks like the was the aliases are getting handle are for sure the
problem. So qmail is not seeing "list" and [EMAIL PROTECTED] as the same
thing. Anyone know away around this using the aliases?

[Mailman-Users] Administrator E-mail

2004-06-09 Thread Oliver Brian \(BTAS\)
Hello,

I have Mailman 2.1 installed, and I am having an issue with
administrators receiving e-mails when a user (who requires moderation)
has posted a new message to the mailman maillist. Basically the admin
is not receiving an e-mail (or notification) that informs them that
moderation is required. So a long queue of posts is building up in my
maillists. Is there a setting somewhere that needs to be enabled, so
moderators of the lists receive e-mails? I can't get any of my mailman
mailists to function like this. I'm starting to wonder if mailman even
has this function. The customer says it does.

Thanks,

It doesn't show libdb, and the reason -- as I now know -- is that libdb was
linked statically. BTW, is there an equivalent of "libdb" for static links?

But I am very happy to report that I have now fixed the Postfix problem, and
it was by virtue of this list's advice. Running "postalias" was indeed the
right thing to do, but, due to the order of things in my PATH, I was running
the wrong "postalias". Once I fixed that, my problem ended. Many thanks to
all of you.

Are you sure postmap & smtpd belong together and were linked against
the same libdb? Check with ldd

Could this be a permission problem?
When you run postalias are you root -- or somebody who can write in /etc ?

you want to use 'postalias', not 'postmap' ->

  postalias hash:/etc/aliases hash:/var/chroot/htdocs/mailman/data/aliases

I think you need to use postalias instead of postmap.
Like this:

/usr/sbin/postalias /etc/aliases
/usr/sbin/postalias /var/chroot/htdocs/mailman/data/aliases

I added this lines to my postfix startup script.
So I don't need to remember to do them.

[Mailman-Users] mailman not send mail

2004-06-09 Thread Troy Richard
Hey guys,

I have install mailman and everything looks to be working fine except when
I try to post to a mailing list. I can see the email come into my qmail
mail server and just set in the email accounts mail directory. I can
subscribe/unsubscribe and get those emails just fine. It is like when the
list emails come in mailman doesn't know what to do with them. I think I
have all my aliases set up correctly (posted below). I've looked through
the archives and have seen several others with this problem, but no
solution posted. Help please.

Here is what my aliases are setup as:

.qmail-* = the file
and after the : is the command that is in the file.

.qmail-xterra:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman post Xterra
.qmail-xterra-admin:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman admin Xterra
.qmail-xterra-bounces:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman bounces
Xterra .qmail-xterra-confirm:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman
confirm Xterra .qmail-xterra-join:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman
join Xterra .qmail-xterra-leave:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman
leave Xterra .qmail-xterra-owner:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman
owner Xterra .qmail-xterra-request:|preline

.qmail-xterra-subscribe:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman subscribe

.qmail-xterra-unsubscribe:|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman

Thanks for any help

[Mailman-Users] main site email address

2004-06-09 Thread Kit Stube
Does anyone know an easy way to change the main site email address for a
mailman installation? ie: I want to change the address that appears
after "If you are having trouble using the lists, please contact" on the
listinfo page. I can't seem to find it anywhere. I already have a
bunch of lists installed and people using them so reinstalling is not an
option.

[Mailman-Users] Virtual Domains with Postfix and Mailman

2004-06-09 Thread Brendsel, Jon
All -

I am encountering a problem that has me completely stumped in getting
Mailman+Postfix to work properly with a virtual domain. I have read
everything I can find in the FAQ and the archives but am having trouble
getting it to work as expected. To that end, I have read the following
posting which I think I am following to the letter, but to no avail.
http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=show&file=faq04.029.htp

In my current mm_cfg.py, I currently have the following settings:

DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST = 'domain.tld' DEFAULT_URL_HOST = 'www.domain.tld'
VIRTUAL_HOSTS.clear()
add_virtualhost(DEFAULT_URL_HOST, DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST)

The problem is in the emails that go out (from mainman-admin) when I set up
the list, or when new subscribers join.

Specifically, the sending email address domain shows correctly as
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

But the various admin URLs in the body of the email show

http://domain.tld/ as the base URL instead of the expected
http://www.domain.tld

I am assuming that is not a bug, but rather some dumb config error. But I
have tried every possible combination that I can think of in mm_cfg.py to
try and fix the issue, but to no avail.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks much.

Jon Brendsel

You haven't run the postmap command to generate the alias database.
Use the following:
postmap hash:/etc/aliases
postmap hash:/var/chroot/htdocs/mailman/data/aliases

[Mailman-Users] Postfix has problems with Mailman aliases database

2004-06-09 Thread malgosia askanas (staff)
I am installing Mailman on a machine running Postfix. I put in Postfix's
configuration file the statement

alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases, hash:/var/chroot/htdocs/mailman/data/aliases

and ran Mailman's "genaliases" command to generate the alias database (which
now contains aliases for 2 lists). But it looks like my Postfix is choking on
Mailman's aliases. I get a steady stream of the following complaints in the
maillog:

Jun 9 12:45:20 polyhedra postfix/smtpd[16195]: fatal: open database
/var/chroot/htdocs/mailman/data/aliases.db: Invalid argument
Jun 9 12:45:21 polyhedra postfix/master[301]: warning: process
/usr/local/libexec/smtpd pid 16195 exit status 1
Jun 9 12:45:21 polyhedra postfix/master[301]: warning: /usr/local/libexec/smtpd: bad
command startup -- throttling

Does anybody have any advice, please? I notice the following seeming mismatch,
but I don't know if it's relevant:

For the Postfix aliases database:
# file /etc/aliases.db
/etc/aliases.db: Berkeley DB (Hash, version 7, native byte-order)

For the Mailman aliases database:
# file /var/chroot/htdocs/mailman/data/aliases.db
/var/chroot/htdocs/mailman/data/aliases.db: Berkeley DB 1.85 (Hash, version 2, native
byte-order)

Many thanks in advance,

I just installed mailman and built a bunch of lists. The owners of the

When they click on the link and go to the page to do the moderator stuff
the page does not have any moderator requests. We are all very
confused. Any idea how to make this stop?

[Mailman-Users] Weekly Automatic Digest Distribution

2004-06-09 Thread Richard E. Robbins
I want to configure a mailing list where a digest is sent out on a weekly
basis at a set time of day. I'm trying to set up a kind of weekly sealed
bid process. The list will be limited to about a dozen people and traffic
is expected to be limited. I've assumed that I'd set the digest size
threshhold to a suitably large number to eliminate (or at least dramatically
reduce) the possibility of early digest distribution. I'd like to have the
digest sent automatically as opposed to triggering the digest send by hand
each week at the appropriate time.

It's not obvious to me how to configure mailman to do this. I suspect that
those who administer the relevant server will respond to reasonable
configuration requests. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure that this feature is available. If you are
subscribed by the list owner/moderator, the system will issue a
password for you. If you subscribe via the e-mail interface, I
believe that the system will issue a password to you. But I'm not
sure that the system will issue you a password if you subscribe

If this feature is available, then I don't think it's changed
since the 2.1.x series came out, and may have been around even earlier
than that.
