RE: MI SQL select for a text string fragment

Hi Tim,

Just use

Description Like "%Primary route%"

in the "where condition" part of a SQL select.

Hope this helps.

Sue.

RE: MI Undocumented

1999-09-09 Thread Ogilvie, Mark

This is extremely interesting!

In Mapbasic.def (like Anssi I'm looking at v5.0) there are the following
defines under the CommandInfo section:
Define CMD_INFO_EDIT_TABLE 1
Define CMD_INFO_EDIT_STATUS 2
Define CMD_INFO_EDIT_ASK 1
Define CMD_INFO_EDIT_SAVE 2
Define CMD_INFO_EDIT_DISCARD 3

The handler is triggered just *before* the table is closed. If there are
unsaved edits in the table being closed the handler executes and then you
get the "Do you want to save your changes?" dialog.

In your SaveTableEditsHandler, if you call CommandInfo(CMD_INFO_EDIT_TABLE)
you get the name of the table which is being closed.

I can't work out what happens when you call
CommandInfo(CMD_INFO_EDIT_STATUS). So far I have only been able to get a
value of 1 back, which I guess is CMD_INFO_EDIT_ASK, meaning the table is
set to prompt me if I want to save edits. I guess there must be situations
in which edits are automatically saved or discarded, and Commandinfo would
then return CMD_INFO_EDIT_SAVE and ~_DISCARD respectively, but I can't see
what those situations would be. I have tried opening tables READONLY, and
setting FASTEDIT ON, but neither of these seems to produce the expected
result. I have a suspicion ~SAVE and ~DISCARD only apply to special "system"
tables, such as label-layers, cosmetic-layers, grids, thematics, etc. I
haven't had time to experiment further. To get a glimpse of this uncharted
terrain, close a mapper window and the SaveTableEditsHandler triggers for a
layer called something like "1_WINDOW".

I have to do some real work. If anyone wants to experiment further, below is
the MB code I used.

'*
include "mapbasic.def"
declare sub main
declare sub SaveTableEditsHandler

sub main

OnError goto tab_not_open_error
close table test
OnError goto 0

Open Table "test.TAB"

browse * from test

exit sub

tab_not_open_error:
resume next

end sub 'main
'
sub SaveTableEditsHandler
dim i_edit_status as smallint

print "In sub SaveTableEditsHandler..."

print "CMD_INFO_EDIT_TABLE =" + CommandInfo(CMD_INFO_EDIT_TABLE)

i_edit_status = CommandInfo(CMD_INFO_EDIT_STATUS)
print "CMD_INFO_EDIT_STATUS =" + i_edit_status

end sub 'SaveTableEditsHandler

MI Solution/summary on DLL programming problem

1999-09-09 Thread Karl Kliparchuk

Hi,

I received many emails with ideas to my problem of not being able to
link to a .dll. One person suggested to use Quick View in Windows
Explorer to see the export table in the dll. There was none visible. I
was using Windows 95. When I used Quick View in Windows NT, the export
table is visible for the dll, and if I ran my mbx in Windows NT, the mbx
did link to the dll. Why this is so, I do not know yet. It could be a
Microsoft operating system bug, or a bug in the dll. If anyone can add
info to this, please let me know.

Thanks.

MI Sri Lanka National Grid System

1999-09-09 Thread Cliff Mugnier - University of New Orleans

John,

The Kandawala Datum of 1929 origin is at Latitude = 7* 14' 06.838" North,
Longitude = 79* 52' 36.670" East of Greenwich. The reference azimuth to station
Halgastota = 176* 41' 33.18", and the ellipsoid of reference is the Everest 1830
where a = 6,377,276.345 meters and first eccentricity squared is
0.00663784663020. The scale of the triangulation of the island is dependant on
two bases, each about 5 1/2 miles long, situated at Negombo on the West Coast
(Latitude 7* 10'), and at Batticaloa on the East Coast (Latitude 7* 40') These
bases were originally measured in 1857 and 1859 respectively, remeasured in
1930. The bases agree to 1 in 115,000.

The National Grid System is the Ceylon (Sir Lanka) Transverse Mercator Belt
which is based on the abbreviated Gauss-Kruger (truncated at the fifth
derivative term). The Central Meridian is 80* 46' 18.16" East, The False
Northing Latitude of Origin is 7* 00' 01.7290" North, the Scale Factor at Origin
is unity, and both the false northings and false eastings are 176,000 Indian
Yards where one meter is equal to 1.093619000 Indian Yards.

The International Boundary between Sri Lanka is much simpler than that of
Norway. Your country uses the Principle of Straight Baselines, but the Sri
Lankans use "Great Circle Arcs" (ellipsoidal geodesics) to define their limits
with coordinate points that are expressed in Latitude and Longitude.

Check out the website for the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote
Sensing at

http://www.asprs.org/resources.html

Under the heading of "Grids and Datums" are a number of my past columns on
various countries, Norway will be the featured country next month (October,
1999).

MI SUM: Updating a table text field

1999-09-09 Thread Matt.Wilkie

My original question was:
===
I have a question which I'm sure is a FAQ, but have not been
able to locate the answer, my apologies if it's right in front of
my face, but I just don't see it. :)

I have some records in which I need to update a text field.
How do I update them en mass?

The scenario: adding a text label/id to stream watersheds.
Currently I select the relevant vectors, browse the selection
table, paste an identical text string a few hundred times into
the "ws_id" field.
===

Through a combination of experimentation and reading
through the various suggestions emailed to me I eventually
discovered my error lay in misunderstanding how the
expressions work. More specifically, use the concatenate
operator (+).

Interactively:

- Select/Query the elements to operate on
- Table > Update Column
- Table to Update: Selection or Query#
- Column to Update: ws_id
- Get Value from Table: Selection or Query#
* Value:   +"text string"

And to accomplish the same task in the map basic window:

   1. Select the relevant vectors
   2. In the Mapbasic window, type
Update Selection Set ws_id = "text string"

Where 'Selection' is the table/query/selection and 'ws_id' is
the column and ' "text string" ' is some sort of text. Define
the column as Char in Maintain Table.

If the idea is to create a unique record ID, you could use this:

Update tablename set columnname = rowid

or whatever you want to put instead (rowid+10, 1, a,
centroidX(obj).). 'rowid' is basically the row number.

Thanks to all the respondants. Everybody was kind with no
flames for not understanding something so simple. :)

cheers,

-matt

MI 5.5 printing hassles

Greetings,

Just checking to see if anyone knows if MapInfo has done anything yet to
fix the various printing problems associated with 5.5. Having MI crash

frustrating. During the summer, MI sales people said they were busy
working on a fix, but we haven't heard anything since. If anyone knows

Hello fellow Mappers

I am currently writing a mapbasic application and would like to know if it
is possible to assign the scroll function to the keyboard arrow keys.  I

MI Q: Append rows to table (cont.)

1999-09-09 Thread Nemo Mai

Thank you all for your suggestions.
Packing the tables does not work for my case. The features are still
collapsed at the boundaries.
I am sorry if this is a trivial question, but I cannot figure out how to
adjust the bounds of a table.
Searching in the MapInfo help file, the closest thing I could find was
"Specifying The Bounds for Coordinate Systems" which involved editing
the Mapinfow.prj file something I'd rather not do.
I also tried to create a new table. When stepping though all the steps,
I did not find any option to set/adjust the boundaries.
Thanks again for your help.

Re: MI VMapper vs. dBplanner

1999-09-09 Thread James Harvie

Natalie,

Here is a brief response to your query. Both Vertical Mapper and deciBel
Planner are products of Northwood Geoscience Ltd. and both run inside the
MapInfo environment. Vertical Mapper adds the raster GIS component to
MapInfo allowing users to generate continuous surfaces (grids) from point
information. Once created they can then be analyze, edited, and visualized
in many ways.

deciBel Planner takes the same grid technology and applies it to the
telecommunication industry. In fact the Vertical Mapper product is included
with dBPlanner but the name is changed to "Surface Analysis". It uses grid
technology to help RF engineers plan, optimize, and maintain a wireless
communication network.

RE: MI What to do before we Format PC

1999-09-09 Thread Matt.Wilkie

>Make a complete backup.

Actually Mats, I think that's exactly that they don't want to do. Oh, I
should refine that, yes they could make a complete backup, but no they
should not do a complete restore.

In my experience, when system rot proceeds to the point where it's necessary
to nuke & pave (format C:), restoring a complete backup will also restore
most of the problems. The best approach is to backup only those files which
contain configuration and user specific stuff, preferences basically, and
install everything else from the source cd's. (backup of data is an assumed
prerequisite. I keep all my data on a seperate partition or volume from my
programs to make this easier.)

The MapInfo specific preference files which I know of which should be backed
up are:

%windir%\nviews.txt ;named views
%windir%\startup.wor;auto load on MI startup stuff

These files should be backed up if you've customized them:

...\mapinfo\mapinfow.prj;projections
...\mapinfo\mapinfow.pen;line styles
...\mapinfo\mapinfow.fnt;fonts/symbols
...\mapinfo\mapinfow.clr;colour (?)
...\mapinfo\mapinfow.abb;abbreviations
...\mapinfo\tools\* ;custom/downloaded toolboxes

...\mapinfo\thmtmplt\ThemeTemplate.LST
...\mapinfo\thmtmplt\your_custom_theme1.thm
...\mapinfo\thmtmplt\your_custom_theme2.thm

there are also a series of .FTS files in my MI directory which show recent
date stamps, but I have no idea what they are for.

cheers,

-matt

Re: Registry setting to enhance MI Plotting

I think the reference is to the UseTrueColor setting in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MapInfo/MapInfo/Common, which should
be set to 1 for MapInfo to use full color resolution. You lose
transparency effects, but you also get rid of ratty pixelation of
plots.

But to make sure you don't lose your "settings" the two important
files to make REGULAR backups of are Windows\user.dat and
Windows\System.dat. This is the lair of the mysterious Windows
Registry, and if your programs start forgetting where they put
their components, this is what got hosed.

There's a great O'Reilly book called "Windows Annoyances" that
tells you all about this and how to recover from Windows. It also
goes into how you can get rid of annoying icons (like MSN) and
utilities that Micorsoft wants to shove down your throat. You 'd
be amazed at how much open disk space you get when you clean out
all the bits you don't need. The web page for "Annnoyances"
http://www.annoyances.org/win95/) has a lot of free info on these
subjects, too.

MI Legend "tweaking"

1999-09-09 Thread Branchaud, Rick

Good day class,

Today's questions involve MI 5.0 legends. I am trying to create (or more
appropriately modify) the output of a legend. I have a map with a number of
layers, 4 of these layers (which are adjacent to each other as opposed to
overlying each other) contain regions/polygons with each of these layers
having
between 10 and 15 classifications. I don't want to combine the layers. My
problem comes when I use the legend feature and display the classifications
for
these layers.

First, they do not display in any particular order (i.e. the classification
order in each layer is different, despite some of the layers having the same
classes). How does MI determine the display order? Does it refer to a
particular field to sort and subsequently display? If it does, how can I
make
it refer to a field that I have sorted to suit the project?

Secondly, is there a way to have the "description or title" associated with
the
symbol to be linked directly to a particular cell in the browser table? Or
do I
have to manually edit each title?

Anyone have ideas?

Cheers,

MI Undocumented

1999-09-09 Thread Anssi Joutsiniemi

Dear all,

We all know some of them like RowID and map object
functions are poorly documented for MIPro users but available via MapBasic
documentation.
Beyond that, you can find CreateView statement from
StreetInfo files and so on.

By poking Mires.dll file I was able come with two
extra handlers, which seems to be undocumented as well (unless it is in
v.5.50).

SaveTableEditsHandler procedure is invoked
everytime table closes and seems to be very usefull.

BuildAddressHandler is something I haven't tested
yet, but I assume it has something to do with geocoding feature. If you figure
it out, let us all know.

I wonder if anybody is
keeping track on undocumented yet useful features of Mapinfo (and I don't mean
peculiar key combinations that make MI crash) ?  Does anybody have a clue
how much of this stuff is around?

Regards,

Format PC mean : c:\format c:

That mean you delete all files on your hard drive even windows... your
computer will not booting anymore.

You will need to reinstall windows from scratch and all stuff.

Since I get my PC I formatted it 20 times :)

Scott,

Why not use the MBR() function to determine the outer limits of the shape
and then calculate from this whether to go portrait or landscape.

Hope this helps

SV: MI Q: Append rows to table

1999-09-09 Thread Gis

Yup, you have bounds set in the coordsys clause for the second (target)
table, that limits the area in which new objects can be created. Adjust the
bounds, and you _should_ be fine.
