Hi List,

I have a great book by Ian Johnson called Understanding MapInfo. I was
wondering if anyone knows of something similar for an introductory to
ArcView.

Cheers

MI Table .ID .DAT problem files

Hi List,

Have some tables that will not open in workspaces properly. The error
message informs that it cant find .DAT or ID files. I have opened and packed
the tables, that doesn't sole the problem. Just wondering if anyone has any
other ideas.

MI oracle 8i connectivity

2000-04-20 Thread Jaideep Nirula

Listers,

I am trying to connect to my oracle8i database via the " open DBMS"
option and the problem is that it does not give me a live connectivity.
I have to download the table as a .tab file and then work with it and
this makes me loose all the data integrity / security. I was told that
it is a live connectivity in 5.5. Could someone tell me the process of
connecting (if I am doing anything wrong) or a way around for this.

Nother problem is with the inporting (using universal translator) of
microstation data. The data with our client is in microstation and with
a projection "indian polyconic - Everest". When I give these options and
try to get it in a .tab format, I just get a straight line. The
projection system is confirmed and there is no problem in microstation.
Also, is there any way to import the data linked to the object when I
get it in the .tab format.

Thanx in advance

MI - Date function

2000-04-20 Thread Tom Manson

MI-Listers,

Okay people, how much do you know about Date functions in MI? Is it possible
to select a row from Table1 where the date is within 10 days (for example)
from another row in Table2? As far as I can tell, I can only select rows
based on month, day of the week, day or year.

Thanks in advance,

Re: MI Table .ID .DAT problem files

2000-04-20 Thread christian ormond

I've run into this problem twice for two different reasons.
1. I moved the folder containing the map.
2. I used the Mac Affee uninstaller which erased all my "unused" .dat files
(thankfully I had a back up).

Not much help but those are my two examples.

MI Vertical Mapper question

Dear all

I have a question for any Vertical Mapper guru's out there.

Is it possible to create a grid/3D drape in vertical mapper from existing
contour lines. ie. digitised into Mapinfo from paper copy maps? If so, could
you please give me some advice as to how to go about it.

Thanks for your responses

MI SUM Inverse Selection

2000-04-20 Thread Silke Keuerleber

Thanks to all who found the time to answer my question.

I had asked how I can invert a selection to be able to save time in finding
rows from one table with no match in a second table (find the matching rows
and invert the selection).

Here are the responses:

1.
There is a tool on the Directions Mag site which inverts current selection.
This tool wasn't very helpful for me, because it inverts the selection in a
way that it selects all objects which don't intersect the selected objects.
My table holds the same objects multiple times with different attributes and
therefore the inverse selection wasn't really inverse. And it is not faster
than the original sql statement select * from table1 where col1 not in
(select col1 from table2)

2.
select * from table1 where col1 all(select col1 from selection)
This actually does an inverse selection but it is not faster than the
original sql statement select * from table1 where col1 not in (select col1
from table2).
Col1 also has to be an unique field.

3.
Make a copy of table1 then
select * from table1, table2 where table1.col1 = table2.col1 into TMP
When the TMP browser appears, hit the delete key. The only records that
remain are the ones with no match in table2 (they weren't selected.)
This works perfect but by the time I received this answer I had already
found my own work around.

My work around:
Add a column to table1 and set the value to zero.
Select * from table1,table2 where table1.col1 = table2.col1
Update added column for the selection with 1
Select * from table where added column = 0
Delete added column

MI Multiple Pie Thematics

Good Morning list,
I hope to create a map which compares market share by age group against
population distribution by age group. This would display, within each ZIP code,
two pies. Has anyone done this before or, have any idea how I could pull it off?
What is stumping me is how I can reposition the pies after they are created. I
tried the archives and various manuals without success so I'm sending up the

Re: MI Clipping region and zero length line objects

2000-04-20 Thread Derek_Snyder

Yannick,

What version of MI Pro are you using?

In the soon to be released MI Pro 6.0, the Clip Region feature has a new
option which allows the Windows Display Device to perform the Clip Region
functionality. There is a good chance that using this feature will allow
your scheme to work.

If you are using MI Pro 5.5, then the processing for Clip Region is always
an Erase Outside operation (or MapBasic Overlap() function, which is the
same under the covers). In this operation, there is a pre-processing step
to remove duplicate nodes. In your case, your zero length line segments
are comprised to 2 duplicate nodes. So, the processing throws one of them
away, which leaves a one point line. Since there is no such entity as a
one point line, the object will be discarded and ignored. Basically, you
are using bad data (a zero length line), and the operation is filtering it
out.

Selection has been and continues to be done outside the Clip Region
Processing. Select any object, regardless if it is completely inside the
clip region, completely outside the clip region, or actually cut by the
clip region, and the entire original object will be highlighted.

Subject: MI Clipping region and zero length line objects

Hi L-sters!

you will say I am splitting hair, but I came across a strange
feature in MI.

Because I need only linear object in a table for thematic purpose, I
convert
point objects to zero length line objects using : Update my table set obj
= CreateLine(CentroidX(obj), CentroidY(obj), CentroidX(obj),
CentroidY(obj)). I was not sure that it was going to work. It did like I
expect it to. But it does not work with zero length polylines. My goal was
to override the style with a thick line that was going to mimic a circular
symbol. Until now, everything is fine. It gets strange when I set a
clipping
region. All my zero length objects are no longer visible, inside or outside
the clipping region. They are still selectable, I can see the highlight but
cannot see them when not selected. I set the clipping region to OFF, and
they are visible again. I suppose it has to do with the way objects are
processed when they are clipped. It's a very singular object, a line with
the start and end nodes at the same coordinate.

Someone has a piece of explanation to offer?

MI: Proviewer for v.5.5

Title: MI: Proviewer for v.5.5

Hello all,

Is there a verison of Proviewer which accepts the printer settings and cartesian/spherical settings which Mapinfo 5.5 puts into its workspaces. At the moment, I have to edit the workspaces in notepad, alter !Version 550 to !Version 450, delete any references to 'Distance type' and delete the 'Printer Name...' setting before any Proviewer users can open it.

Thanks

You don't need MapBasic, but you do need to know the magic words.
Open the MapBasic window and enter this:

Set Window Info Font ("MS Sans Serif",0,12,0)

The default size is 9, but the font size is controlled by third
parameter (the 12). The first 0 is the font style (0 = normal, 1
= bold, etc.), the last 0 is the color.

MI SDTS translator for mif/mid

2000-04-20 Thread Staub Paul

In January of this year, there was discussion on this list of a new
translator for SDTS to mid/mif to be written. Does anyone know the status
of this effort.

I'm particularly interested in translating SDTS hypsographic DLGs (contours)
to MapInfo WITH the elevation attribute coming along in the translation.
I've tried the existing (free) translators and the elevation attribute does
not come through.

Thanks in advance!

MI Drawing Custom Sector Symbols for Cellular Sites

2000-04-20 Thread Warren, Steve

Hey list,

I had asked the following question last week, but I did not receive much
feedback. Therefore, I was going to ask again. Sorry for asking redundant
questions, but I am in need of some help at this point.

I need a way to represent sectors of a cellular site on a map so that I can
associate cellular traffic with it. I know of two ways to obtain this
process, but I do not know how to do it.

1) You can use the site's lat/long, the orientation of the antenna
(sector), the beamwidth of the antenna, and some trigonometry to draw the
sectors.

or

2) You can create custom symbols for each sector and map out the sector
depending on the sector number in your data.

I am looking to obtain code snippets of how to do either (or both) of these
solutions. I am stuck at this point and any help that could be provided
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

steve

Simon,

Yes, it is possible to use your existing contour lines. If the contours are
closed (and non-overlapping) polygons you should use the Region to Grid
function in VM.

If your lines are simple lines or the polygons overlap, it would be best to
extract all of the nodes along those lines into a new points table (with all
of the attributes found in your lines.tab). Use the Poly-to-Point function in
VM.

Create a grid off of the points.tab, make a 3-D drape file and you're on your
way!

RE: MI I was going to invest.... but ??

2000-04-20 Thread Neil Havermale

The suspicous investor or lurker could think one of several things:

1) He knows something we do not - likely.

2) He is about to jump ship and decided to maximize his options - doubtfull

3) He is a wiley-old dog who knows when the marketplace was a tad overvalued
- most likely.

4) He has decided to invest in pecan plantations in Argentia - doubtfull.

5) OR Something really big is cooking for MapInfo's future and to make as
clean a deal as possible he has eliminated any conflict of interest or
personal agendia - most likely.

So Bill, try to keep a positive attitude. It was not too long ago you were
very down on MapInfo's swing towards Internetization of its products. I
kind of like the idea that Oracle has decieded to deliver MapJ stuff
directly and that Oracle is an alternative to the MicroBorg vision of our
future. MapInfo is a sound "growth" investment for small company investment
($100 mill.) Given the players that MapInfo seems to be running with the
managemnt team I believe is hightly concerned about being and looking
squeeky clean. Strong Balance and Income sheets plus all of the very smart
alliance moves that John's team have buildt have signifiucant merit.

Very odd in light of today's release of MapInfo's second quarter

seem to be much wrong with that picture. But who knows why
