MI MAPBASIC: Putting inside strings, eg string = Press Push
Hi, I have a program that only exports files to NonEarth (it's a bug in their software) I'm trying to write a MB app that will read in their MIF file, replace with an appropriate projection and then import into Mapinfo. However the string that defines the projection has "m" within it, ie the inverted comma's need to be part of the string. I've tried ""m"" but that doesn't work. I KNOW theirs a way of doing this, but how? (the rest works fine!) Help appreciated, Thanks, Michelle, Melbourne, Australia [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: MI NAD 83(1994)
Chuck, Chances are, it is the HARN for your state, wherever that is since you don't identify yourself beyond "AOL." Check into the NGS site (http://www.ngs.noaa.gov) to find the date of your state's HARN adjustment. However, if you are working with MapInfo, do you really think the specific HARN adjustment coordinate set versus a standard NADCON conversion is going to make a discernable difference at the centimeter level? Distinguishing between the two is a Geodetic problem, not a Cartographic problem for most people. You are using MapInfo for Boundary Surveys? At the centimeter level on the ground? I'll bet a whole lot of people would like to hear about that, if that's what you're really doing. Clifford J. MI - Sending data to an ODBC database
Dear all, I may be missing something very simple here, but is there a way to 'reverse-link' a MapInfo table into an ODBC database? What I mean by that is - instead of linking a table from an ODBC source into MapInfo, I want to read a native (not linked) MapInfo table into an ODBC database (the db is Access97) The table is a table of retail outlets, and I want to automate the process of populating a table of retailer information, from within my MapInfo application, into the Access database All I can think of is to loop through the MI table creating temporary variables, and use these to send an insert command to the ODBC database for each record - very time consuming for 50,000 records. Any pointers more than welcome. Cheers Graham Smith

Re: MI AND AV in the same office?
When we made the effort to bring GIS technology to our organization five years ago, we chose MapInfo to stay compatible with our clients who also use MapInfo. Since our organization is associated with the University of North Dakota, we fall under all the site license contracts that are made through the state higher education office. Early last year a contract was put into place for ESRI products. I was able to purchase ArcView for $20 and any extensions for $10 each. We now run both programs, but MapInfo remains our primary workhorse. In this aspect, ESRI is able to recruit thousands of users, much in the same way Microsoft gets people to use Internet Explorer by including on every new computer with Windows. So, I guess that ESRI does simply understand the needs of the educational user and addresses them better. Re: Anyone used MI 6.0 yet?
I've seen it, but not looked at it. As a VAR, I do have some strong opinions... 1.There is a cost to MapInfo just to stay current. Every time Windows comes out with a new version, there's work for MapInfo just to make it work correctly. So they need to come out with maintenance releases. 2.Maybe the features are ground shaking events. However, some of the seemingly minor ones have huge impacts on daily users. For example, in 5.5, the better editing algorithms are very significant, if you do drawing (we do). In 6.0, cutting off the ends of lines to create polygons is an exception feature(we just did a big project, and it would have saved us much more than $600 in time). 3.Extending the product line to have OCX Products (MapX), and web-based versions is HUGE. It actually has caused some pain for people who just use MapInfo Pro(like newer versions seem buggier - older ones were bullet proof when released). But it does open up many more ways to use mapping, and makes it potentially available to many more people. If you are the key user for your company, I bet lots of people ask you to make maps, and you tell them you can't - you don't have the time - you'd be overwhelmed if you made maps for everyone who wanted them What if they could make their own maps? 4.Enterprise-wide solutions - The web-based products and OCX give you the potential to make things simpler. Also, the web server based models make it possible to update the information in 1 place and give access to many. This reduces maintenance costs drastically. Plus, since MapInfo charges per seat for desktop licenses, the Web-based server stuff actually makes it CHEAPER if you have lots of people. Small companies don't, but small companies can have lots of customers! You can open up your maps to customers, sales execs, etc. with web mapping. Think outside the box! Best Wishes! A certain percentage will almost certainly try one of the cheap competitors, but will be back here in a year or so saying that their alternative makes a nice supplement to MapInfo. Re: MI Order of creating objects from MIF
The problem is not likely to be with the import, as far as I can tell MI creates the objects in the order they are read off the MIF. Your issue is likely to be the order MI draws them. This has been discussed on the list before and understanding the drawing order seems to require expertise in some dark and arcane science. The solution offered was ensure the 4 basic MapInfo files (*.dat, *.tab, *.id, *.dat) were all located in the same folder when copying them. This included files of 0kb. Re: MI AND AV in the same office?
Since this message keeps appearing, it deserves a public answer. ESRI was the major sponsor of the recent International Health Geographics Conference, at which one of the senior partners of our firm presented a paper on our rapid epidemiological assessment of river blindness in Mozambique. Jack Dangermond has personally contributed software, as much as we need or want, at no cost for this Mozambique effort, and has contributed invaluable logistic and other advice. I would just love to see MapInfo do anything societally conscious at all. Perhaps they are much too busy inventing more "major" upgrades to the desktop software that should be maintenance releases and priced accordingly. At a minimum, MapInfo needs to step up and better serve its loyal desktop users. -- Steve - Original Message - From: "Dick Hoskins" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "Steve Lackow" [EMAIL PROTECTED]; "Marjorie Roswell" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 08, 2000 1:52 PM Subject: Re: MI AND AV in the same office? MI Best GIS for dollar
Hi Everyone, I have been reading the threads on MI and ArcView in the same office and am interested in peoples opinions as to value. I am considering purchase of a GIS but would like info on value vs functionality. Can anyone suggest a GIS system that gives the best 'bang for your buck' for business applications such as demographic studies, network analysis and has decent spatial modeling capabilities? Map Design and layout capabilities are important also. I have used ArcInfo and ArcView but realise there are other systems such as MI, Esri Atlas GIS and Manifold. Unfortunately, as everyone knows many systems lack basic functionality required to complete a project and either you need to buy expensive 'add-on' modules or use a different program to complete the project. For example, what does the Esri Atlas GIS give that you cannot do with ArcView and a business add-on? Manifold claims it does way more than MI. Are there users experienced with several of these systems that could shed some light on the relative strengths and weaknesses of these systems? Is one of these systems head and shoulders above the rest? Re: MI MAPBASIC: Putting inside strings, eg string = Press Push
Hi Michelle You may need to try using Chr$(34) instead of ". RE: MI zip
Yes, Abracadabra? No. There are several mouse clicks and a necessary table that shipped in V 5.5, that was not in my previous version 4.0. The table is Uszipbdy.tab and is shipped in the path Mapinfo\Data\Map_Data\Namerica\USA\USAMaps. With this table open, hit Control F (standard windows command for Find) or go the QueryFind menu. When the Find dialog box opens you have to select the Uszipbdy Table and enter the zip you want in the next box. This table is a region type which is cool cause it shows you the area the zip covers. The version 4.0 we had was a point file and you had no idea how big the zip area was. Hit OK and the next screen asks for the zip to find, if it's a zip in the table it will mark it with the selected symbol, if its not in the list you will be given close matches to choose from. Is there any automatic function in MI that shows where a ZIP code is located? Meaning that given a particular ZIP (US) code - enter- "abracadabra" - here it is located. I understand about the geocoding procedure but I have someone here saying that this feature is for sure automatic for MI. ( I don't buy it) Any help? Thanks Dyan C. MI mail server trouble
No need to post that you are getting multiple copies of MI messages. The entire list is probably affected. It's happened before, probably a configuration problem on the mail server. I'm sure Bill will get it straightened out. If everybody sends an email to complain, we'll all get multiple copies of each one - so please sit tight and just delete the extra emails. Re: MI What about topology?
Hi! MapLogix software has been designed for doing that. MapLogix works directly in MapInfo interface to detect and automatically correct topology errors. That is a topological map editing utility that you can use in order to realize many operations as remove duplicate nodes, clean polylines network and build region objects. MapLogix lets you define your own correction tolerances, according to your data. You can try the demo version, available at http://www.korem.com/MapLogix. MI SQL Server Spatial Capability
I've gathered from recent reading that SQL Server doesn't have a spatial capability a la those of Oracle or Informix. Does anyone know why or whether MS is working on that feature?
