MI: Simultaneous file sharing, multiple users

2000-08-24 Thread Jason Adam

Good day List-
I have had a request to look into something that may not be MapInfo specific
but I thought the collective knowledge base here may have an idea or two.
I'm looking at a way to have two (or more) users simultaneously look at a
network file and mark edits on it in real time, kind of like a video
conference or virtual/net meeting. Essentially it would be like everyone
gathered around one computer and suggesting ideas while one person executed
them with MapInfo, but instead they want to sit at their own terminals and
see the same thing. This is especially useful for others on the company
network who are not in the same regional office.

Would a solution have to be application specific? If all the participants
had the same software on their machines (be it MapInfo, ERmapper etc), would
there be a way to show a window of what the others were doing on everyone's
screen?

Just putting out the feelers, any suggestions would be welcome-
Jason

RE: MI .wmf export issue

2000-06-27 Thread Jason Adam

Alberto-
I get the same thing all the time - quite annoying I'd say. I'm not sure
what it is, but I suspect that there is a memory problem whereby it captures
everything up to a certain point and then drops the fill. One workaround
that sometimes works for me is to set up the layout as you want it (say on a
landscape 8.5x11 paper) then change the paper size to something bigger like
a landscape D size so that there is extra paper showing on the side that is
not being captured entirely (right side?). Now export the window as a wmf.
You'll have extra to crop off in Word or PowerPoint, but it may retain the
fills for you.
Good luck with that-

RE: MI AND AV in the same office?

2000-05-03 Thread Jason Adam

Robert-
I don't know how common it is, but we also use MI and AV in the same office.
We also use AutoCAD 2000, CorelDraw and Photo-Paint, as well as everything
from the Microshaft Office package. We have AV because of preferences from
our Head Office, but primarily (>95% of the time) use MapInfo for mapping.
Our drafting dept. creates maps for geological research and mineral
(diamond) exploration, and we also make presentation material, posters, and
slide shows hence the other drawing packages. Anything graphic, we handle.
With the use of the Universal Translator, we can export MapInfo files to
ArcView SHP's in order to share with other users, so we don't need to draft
or buy data twice. Same with DWG/DXF files which we still get from
consultants, as well as all the original digitizing and mapping work we did
before MapInfo (also the need for AutoCAD). Then you add on Access to query
data from the database and Excel to give that data to others and to make
graphs.
All in all, I'm sure it's not too unusual to have more than one piece of
software to get your job done.

In your case, you probably don't need to upgrade everytime a new AV comes
out, as most of the functions you use it for come with your original
version.
Regards,
Jason
p.s. If you ever get the time, take a scan through some Mapbasic (MB)
programs - it's not to hard to pick up the basics of the language.

MI Metadata and Directory Structure

2000-03-31 Thread Jason Adam

Hi All-
We are about to start revising our rather outdated and convoluted MapInfo
data directory structure so that new users can find the tables they need.
We are interested in assigning and keeping the metadata for each table and
be able to query on it if possible.
(ie select All point tables for Ontario from 1995 and before). As it stands
right now, most of that information is carried in my or my collegues head as
to where it's stored, it's origin, and when it was created/modified.
Does anyone have any experience they can share with Metadata managers and
perhaps the way they set up their directory structure to help control
duplicate and outdated (archival I guess you'd call it) tables?
Many Thanks, will sum
Jason

RE: MI Digital export of layout

2000-03-28 Thread Jason Adam

Sean-
You may want to export the Layout as a WMF which is a vector format, then
paste it into a new 600dpi document in PhotoPaint or PhotoShop, whatever
image editing program you have around. That may take care of the resolution
problem.
If you really don't have any kind of Paint program, you could insert the wmf
into PowerPoint and export the slide as a TIF.
Or you could print the map and have it scanned it back in at whatever
resolution you need.

Update two new columns in your Line table with value ObjectGeography(obj,3)
or ObjectGeography(obj,4) for endpoint X and endpoint Y respectively. Make
sure to set the projection of the map window to your desired type before

MI: Cropped Frame dialog - 5.5 bug or install error?

2000-01-24 Thread Jason Adam

Good day Listers-
I have a user in the office trying to install 5.5 on his machine which used
to have 5.0 on it. He's run across an odd problem that I can't replicate.
The Frame dialog (dbl-click on a frame in the layout) is now missing the
last line which contains the "Fill Frame with Contents" checkbox and the
"Scale on Paper" which is obviously not very handy for him. He's running it
off a laptop computer, could that be an issue? Looking for anyone with a
similar experience or a work-around.

RE: MI Mapinfo v5.5 Patch (printing bug)

2000-01-18 Thread Jason Adam

More creepy crawlies?
I've found that when I set an E-size page to landscape on a HP1050C, the new
layout window comes up portrait, and you have to switch the Page Setup again
to get it to stick. I think it's trying to go to your Windows Default
printer.
Also, the little Preview button you click to change the style of a region in
a dialog box doesn't update with the new style when you change it. It was
kind of confusing at first, I'd keep going back in to check if I'd actually
changed the style.

RE: MI - Expressions in "Select"

David-
Try using left$(PLUGS,1)="G" where the 1 is the number of characters on the
left side of the string. If you needed all the G1xx plugs for example,
you'd enter left$(PLUGS,2)="G1".
Same for the right side (right$(column,#chars)="xxx")

RE: MI Renaming Table Path Names Within a Workspace file

Ron-
I'd like to recommend a great free tool I downloaded from SpatialPlus.com.
It's called SearchPlus and will go throught a whole directory of .wor files
and replace a search string with a new one like if everything was coded to
D:\Data and you moved the map tables to e:\newdata, it could replace that
string.
Check it out: http://www.spatialplus.com

MI Object Creation - Snapping nodes and creating objects

1999-10-29 Thread Jason Adam

TGIF Listers:
I've had a question from another list member (Christy Noonan) regarding the
creation of new regions from existing polylines.
Why is it that moving a node over another node in the same pline (with Snap
On) to, say, correct a hole, doesn't really connect the nodes, it just lies
them on top of one another. I've always figured it was a weird 'feature'
and drew a short line snapped to each side, Combined it with the pline and
Created Regions on that. Is this the only way or is there something within
MI I'm missing?
TIA, will sum (if necessary)

One other option is to Export your table as a MID/MIF file, then look at the

MI: Island cutter

1999-10-07 Thread Jason Adam

I've received a dataset, and joy of joys, it is already in polygons.
However, some of the 'island' polys are not cut out.
The Set target, select objects, Erase... method is getting tiresome, so I
was wondering if anyone had already automated it before I go re-inventing
the wheel in MapBasic.
Ideally, I would pick a large poly and hit the button which would set it as
the target, select all intersecting/contained regions and, use them to erase
holes in it.

MI: SUM Label Expression

1999-10-06 Thread Jason Adam

Many thanks to all who responded (it's funny how many responses I got before
I even saw my original message).
As I suspected, the way I was doing it was the preferred method. How about
a wish-list item?

Q: I want to label points in a table, but I don't want to label the ones
that have a value of zero.
Is there a way to specify a conditional expression for your labels?

A: #1. Query the positive values and add the query to the layout; label
that with N for a symbol style.
#2. Make a character column, update it with the values from orig.
column, then update the Zeros with blanks;
   label objects from that column.

MI: Label Expression

1999-10-06 Thread Jason Adam

Good day listers-
I have what should be an easy question, but I can't seem to figure it out.
All I want is to label points in a table, but I don't want to labels the
ones
that have a value of zero.
(The values represent sample results and the Zeros already have their own
symbol)
An expression along the line of Label with [column] where [column]<>0 would
be
an accurate summary of the problem. Using label expression [column] <> 0
returns a True/False value though.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Hello listers-
I was downloading and converting some shoreline data from the USGS Coastline

derived from the World Data Bank II (scale 1:2M), which I understand was

these errors though.
Does anyone out there know who is currently responsible for maintaing this

RE: MI WAPHGIS: how to kill the Caps Lock key

1999-09-28 Thread Jason Adam

Just a totally unrelated fast fact-
When Buzz Aldrin was getting back into the lunar landing module and removing
his suit, he accidentally knocked off a switch on a control panel. When
they tried to use the switch and found the toggle missing, he used that same
pen to stick in the resulting hole and activate the control.
Ironic with the hoopla about costs that it likely saved the lives of two men
on the moon...

RE: MI Can I move a coverage?

1999-09-21 Thread Jason Adam

James--
It is bad cartographic form to just move the coverage when it's probably a
projection problem, but if you really want to you can
1. Export to a Mif
2. Open .mif in a text editor
3. Add this line under the coordsys part near the top: (check MI reference
book under MapInfo Data Exchange Format)
Transform 0,0,Xdist,Ydist
4. Import the MIF file (import to a new table name in case it messes up).
That should shift your whole map layer by the values you specified, but be
careful with the number you enter - they can be negetive to shift in
opposite direction. It may take some trial and error to get the right
value.
Alternatively, you can make sure your projection has the correct False
Easting and Northing before converting the shape file.

MI SUM: Zoom-To function

1999-09-15 Thread Jason Adam

Thanks you folks for all your help. The Run Menu Command is pretty much
what was required. You learn something new (and essentially basic)every
day.
The user had two windows, a browser and a mapper. When he chose from the
browser, he'd select Query>Find Selection each time to see on the mapper
where he was. He wanted to move that command onto a floatable/dockable
button and save some clicks.
Many thanks to all who responded.
Jason

Here's the code I used for those interested (subst. in a new command from
the menu.def file and put any menu function on a button!)
Include "mapbasic.def"
Include "menu.def"
Include "icons.def"
INCLUDE "AUTO_LIB.DEF"

Declare Sub Main
Declare Sub Action
Sub Main
Create ButtonPad "Utility" As
PushButton
HelpMsg "Choose this button to display Selected objects"
Calling Action
Icon MI_ICON_MISC_16
Title "Utilities"
Width 3
Show
End Sub

Sub Action
 Run Menu Command M_QUERY_FIND_SELECTION
End Sub

MI: MB Zoom To function...

1999-09-15 Thread Jason Adam

Lister:
Hopefully a simple one for a MB wiz...
I have a user that's picking records from a browser then looking at them on
his map. I want to add a simple button to the tool bar to represent the
Query>Find Selection... menu item, but I can't think of the command line for
that.
Something like "Zoom To Selection"?
Many Thanks in advance-

RE: MI MB (confirm int, not char)

1999-08-20 Thread Jason Adam

Aditya-
This is snipped out of my scalebar program, it seems to work...

Part of your Dialog will have something like this:
Control EditText
Value "0"
Position 15,12
Width 10x
ID 14
Into
'.your other dialog controls
'.
'.
Control OKButton
Position 8x,15y
ID 9
calling Check_OK

just make sure you assign an ID number and call the sub Check_OK.
In your new sub Check_OK - note the last part(& declare it at the
beginning):

Sub Check_OK
If Val(ReadControlValue(14)) < 0 then 'note the 14 is the cotrol ID
Note "You MUST enter a POSITIVE Value before continuing."
Alter Control 14 Active
Dialog Preserve
ElseIf ReadControlValue(14) = str$(0) then
Note "You MUST enter a Value before continuing."
Alter Control 14 Active
Dialog Preserve
ElseIf Val(ReadControlValue(14)) = 0 then
Note "Please type a number, not text!"
Alter Control 14 Active
Dialog Preserve
    End IF
End Sub

Hope that helps!

MI RE: Overlay symbols

1999-08-19 Thread Jason Adam

Drew-
You can't put two thematics on the same layer, but if you were to Add that
table again to your layer dialog, you could make a second thematic using it.
Your Layer Control would look something like this:

>Ind. Value with OrdinalCol
Mytable
>Ranges by NominalCol
Mytable
Basetable

NOT LIKE...
>Ind. Value with OrdinalCol
>Ranges by NominalCol
Mytable
Basetable

RE: MI Phantom Tables!

1999-08-10 Thread Jason Adam

Ian-
Your 'phantom' table is probably not "Deleteable" because it is read-only.
Besides, that's a dangerous option to use as it permanently deletes the
table off your HD.
Is the table listed under the File>Close Table... option? If so you could
close it then save workspace again. If you are still getting problems, it
may be better to add an index to one of the fields (Modify Table
Structure>Checkmark one of the Index boxes) so that the WOR opens without
error messages, then try closing the table and saving again.
Editing the workspace file itself can be tricky if the table is referenced
in more than one location in the file and you just remove the first mention
of it.

Jason

RE: MI Label with Expression

1999-07-29 Thread Jason Adam

Gary-
I'd like to know how you got it centrered. I've been putting in two line
lables for a while and wanted to centre some of them.
Anyways, I was labelling from two columns with an expression like NameColumn
+ chr$(13) + DataColumn. The chr$(13) inserts a Carriage Return/LineFeed.
Always seemed to be left justified for me.

MI: Version 5.0 bug?

1999-07-23 Thread Jason Adam

Hi Listers-
I've been working on a complex series of maps with tons of labels, and
experiencing the joy of having to re-arrange 3/4 of them. The problem comes
up when using the Magnifyer to zoom into a densely labelled area to move
them, then MapInfo totally hangs up and the WinNT TaskManager shows 100% CPU
usage when trying to redraw the new zoom. Has anyone else experienced this?
Is this a bug, or just an undocumented feature that lets me EndTask on
MapInfo and set up my workspace again?
Any tips would be appreciated.
System: PentiumPro 200, WinNTv4.0, sp4, MapInfo 5.01

MI: Printing to Canon ImageClass C2100 PS

1999-07-22 Thread Jason Adam

Good day listers-
I've just recieved a new toy - a Canon colour laser printer. The print
quality is very high, and with some tinkering, the colour matching is not
bad. It's best with photos and "raster" type graphics from any software -
Except MapInfo (v5.01 in this case).
Here's the problem - When printing a raster airphoto overlaid with
topography, the Cannon dithers it out to a completely unusable cell size,
while the trusty HP755 makes a nice smooth image. I do know that the Canon
spends considerable time processing the image to PostScript3 internally
before shooting out the print.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Any help would be much
appreciated.

RE: MI Pro Thematic Maps

1999-07-05 Thread Jason Adam

Alex-
This is a little feature of MapInfo that always draws map objects by Rowid,
not the thematic value. Even sorting and saving will not always work if you
pack or add/change an object - they are all internally re-numbered.
The best solution (which I use daily) is to query everything in the table
with Sort By... [your intended thematic column] to a new table (call it
PopAsc I guess. The default name is Query1 of course). Now Add that Query
table to your layer structure and turn off the display of it and the
original table that created it. Make your thematic on this new table, and
it will redraw with the Highest values on top. For Varying circles, you may
want the biggest on the botttom so you can still see the small ones. In
that case just add desc (for descending) to the Sort By... [column] line in
the query dialog.
This technique simply redraws the map objects from the Top down (browser
order), regardless of what kind of thematic you want.
Newer MI versions (4.5-5.0) will save this query in the workspace so you
don't have to re-do it everytime you want to look at your project.
Good Luck-

RE: MI virus alert!

1999-01-03 Thread Jason Adam

This is a hoax. Please check these "warnings" with one of many sites on the
web.
A snippet from http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/scares/california.html

Name: California/Wobbler.
Type: Virus hoax.
Danger: NONE.
Description:
This hoax email warns that if you receive an email with an
attached file called "California", you should not open the file as it
contains the "WOBBLER" virus. It claims that this virus deletes
all the files on the hard disk, and that it can run from Netscape
Navigator or Internet Explorer, and can work on both PCs and
Macintosh computers. The hoax attributes this information to a
report from IBM.

Whilst there is a joke program called WOBBLER
or
JOKE/WIN-WOBBLE (which makes the windows on
your
computer wobble), it is not a virus, and does
not have the
side-effects described in this message. It is a
hoax.

Many virus hoaxes falsely claim to describe an
extremely dangerous virus
falsely claim that the report was issued
or confirmed by a
well-known company ask you to forward it
to all your friends and colleagues

As usual, you are urged not to pass on warnings
of this kind, as
the continued re-forwarding of hoaxes like this
simply wastes
 email bandwidth.

It should be remembered that it is impossible
for a virus to exist
in the normal text portion of an email. A virus
could be carried
within a file attached to an email, but this
could only be spread by
detaching the file and executing it or (if it
contains macros)
opening it with an application that could
execute the viral macros.
