That's the point. It is supposed to make you think of MSO but choose LibO. The unconscious association of the two office products. As an option that has no real functionality value to the suite, as strange as it may seem, this will be a huge hit with kids using our suite! I suspect that it will make the difference between the choice of using MSO or LibreOffice. Kids are usually not really interested at first of the functionality of an office suite, but mostly how they can make it look cool. The use of personas, for a young person, drips immensely of coolness! I myself, have put on a persona of my choice and like it a lot. I could not imagine going back to the default LibreOffice look. The only critical comment that I have is that I would like the option to be a little more streamlined for use, but I'll probably submit a feature request for this on the bugzilla. BTW ... people, you should be working with the v.4.0 suite to appreciate all of the new features, there are many! You may want to download/install v.4.0 and help out testing out the rc (release candidate) versions as the QA (Quality Assurance) team needs to hear of any problems that you may encounter. If you find any bugs, let us know and we will show you how to file them or to look in the list of current bugs to see if it has already been submitted. I'm not so interested -marketing wise- in product strategy, first of all because such a thing does not work in an open source project (since you can't really tell a volunteer what to do unless you find one that will work things out with you) and second because LibreOffice is a complete and full featured office suite catering to pretty much any existing and potential market out there. Best, Charles. 2012/7/15 Dave Johnson davefilms...@gmail.com I agree... TB is a need for LO. Not a want. To effectively compete in the market we (LO / TDF) must have an integrated PIM. I have been advocating this in the past. On Jul 15, 2012 6:20 AM, Gerry T. gerry.trep...@googlemail.com wrote: Dear Charles, thank you very much for your reply. [...] I am not sure I agree with your thesis. I would point out that in most organization it's the email / groupware server (Exchange/Lotus) that's the primary barrier, not the mail client. If I'm not mistaken Thunderbird or Mozilla do not distribute such groupware server. Thundbird/Lightning as client programmes is in this regard similar situation like LibreOffice, Yes, Mozilla does not provide a groupware server, but - with some quirks - TB can communicate with those (e.g. Exchange). I think, you are right for big organisations or companies, but for the small and medium size organisations/companies the email/PIM client is central (e.g. our institute (university) with roughly 100 staff is based on IMAP-Server, shared calendar, shared adress book, shared storage). For this big target group of organisations/companies, there is basically the decision between MS Outlook and Thunderbird/Lightning. And if Outlook is chosen, the Office suite is MS Office. [...] But to come back to your suggestion, I think that while the development or distribution of a mail client alongside LibreOffice might be worth thinking about *if the appropriate resources* are available, the notion that the Document Foundation would take over the development of Thunderbird is impractical, and will not become real in any way. What I am proposing is not to take over the development in any way, my suggestion is more in the way of signalling to Mozilla.org that TB/Lightning are also very important projects for the future success of LibreOffice. And maybe in the direction of promoting the other project/product to be the best complement to the own software (LibreOffice + TB/Lightning = full office suite). [libreoffice-marketing] Book request for marketing
I would me most grateful for the printed LibreOffice user manual. I intend to use it in my one-on-one product presentation. I am trying to get, long-time MSO non-profits to change to LibO. This is a daunting task. Here in Tennessee, USA MSO is the default standard even for non-profit church schools. I will make my pitch and see where it goes from there. My job, as a non-paid, LibreOffice marketeer is to ask the questions that the Microsoft sales rep chooses not to ask. I have to present a real paradigm change from MSO to free software. I have to give them a real reason to change. Not just for monies sake. I have to convince them that they need the product. I have no budget, no expense account. I do have a full-time job working in dialysis. I am a full time student also. I choose to ask for a book vice money because, a book cannot be spent on other things. I know you don't know me… But I am very dedicated. I view the loose association of marketing folks as a barrier not an advantage. Like I said, I have no budget. I have a family. A wife and four kids. This is what I choose to do on my spare time. I have contacted via email as many as 300 individual students. I will be passing out as many libreoffice dvd's as I can make. Please forward this message to the group so everybody can know what I'm doing in tennessee Well, I have printed about half that many from the various versions of the following DVD ISO file, since summer. Most were given out to people within 50 miles of my location in central New York State. It would be nice to get the DVDs into the hands of the students BEFORE they get the MS habit, i.e. while they are still at home in their local school districts. Free DVDs to college students are great, except if it is after their parents forked out for MSO on their kid's college computers. http://download.**documentfoundation.org/**libreoffice/box/3.4.4/libo3.4.* *4-NA-DVD-WLM-Dec-3-2011.isohttp://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/box/3.4.4/libo3.4.4-NA-DVD-WLM-Dec-3-2011.iso I tend to make both DVD case and thin-jewel case copies depending on who will be getting the media. Except for the lower computer skilled person - think business suites - I tend to give out DVDs with Windows, Linux, and Mac installs. For those who would have problems with that, or gets confused about their computer's specs, I have a Windows-only version of the DVD. What extras are you offering besides the generic LO English install files? Any extra language packs? Any extra dictionaries? Any extensions or templates? If you have students where they read/write more than just English, or maybe Spanish as well, it is good to have a sampling of other language packs to show them that it is easy to add more languages to the package, or at least have more dictionaries than just the default ones. There are over 180 dictionaries that work for LO out there. I tried to include them all with my DVDs. I now produced a set of English dictionaries [plus thesaurus and hyphenation] going from 98,000 words to over 638,000 words in their spelling word lists. I have a 1,000,000+ word list, but the last 200,000 words seem to be mostly obscure words and weird but valid spellings of included ones. You get to decide on how far you want to go with the depth of the words, and word types, you want to spell. There are dictionaries specifically for Medical and Chemical words and terms that are currently not in my 638K word lists [90K+/- of them]. Bet that would help for some college students. So the extras do help. So does templates for standard document types that they might need can help with their large paper assignments. It is great that you have the ability to canvas 5 colleges with the software. Now maybe we can get more extras that are geared for the learning environments. From 6th grade to post-graduate level, all could use more stuff than comes in the basic office package to help with their paperwork these days. MSO does not do much, except student discount, so maybe we should. -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to marketing+help@global.** libreoffice.org marketing%2bh...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/**get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-** unsubscribe/http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.**documentfoundation.org/** Netiquette http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.**libreoffice.org/global/**marketing/http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/marketing/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to marketing+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/marketing/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

So - first the promo video you asked about - the 'Many Voices' video. http://www.youtube.com/user/libreoffice#p/c/3394BC60362F3DF6/0/SI4BjrxNwwA Note: I'm still using the youtube LibreOffie Vols channel, but have just recently begun using the LibreOffice channel. (more on that in a different email) I think you wanted the graphic files I used for the backgrounds. You can find the files on the wiki: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Wallpapers There is a little trick I do with the document icon, adding the scatter motif and the Libo/TDF logo - but that is all generated within the video editor, blending the different elements at runtime - the source for those elements are also available on the wiki. Though I do have a graphic of that rendering, but it hasn't really been vetted in anyway. OH - the voices, all from google BTW. Then there is the second video http://www.youtube.com/user/libreoffice#p/c/3394BC60362F3DF6/0/SI4BjrxNwwA Image wise, again all images are available from the wiki - but I did create special png files for use in the video from SVG sources on the wikim, for the application icons and the paper airplane. This one maybe is better suited for folks to add their own voice to. If that interests you then there are two possible ways to proceed. 1) Simply make a recording of your voice and send it to me and I'll replace my voice with yours. 2) I can send you the mp4 file, minus my voice, but with the music track intact and you can mix your voice overtop. Either way is good with me. This case is quite special because Dave mimics the original logo by putting together the single parts of the logo (symbol and text), whiole using them alone is allowed following the Guidelines. What needs consideration is: - Don't reduce the white space area around the logo to less than 1/2 the width of the symbol. The SM sign is just 1/4 of the symbol's width away from the LibreOffice text. When the right distances are respected, the impression of a modified logo will be reduced, as the distance allows a clear distiction between our logo and the surroundings. - Don't modify the logo colors. The lower border of the symbol is covered by some kind of grey painting - perhaps this derives from removing the gradient in front of the logo. Either use the contemporary logo if you want to show gradients or use the default logo, if the symbol sould stay black. Also see the Trademark Policy http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/TradeMark_Policy Following our latest discussions with Dave, I'm quite sure he is informed about it - especially with regards to the differentiation between external reference to the product and community on the one hand and representation as TDF / community spokespeople / official provider of resources on the other. Very soon there will be a modified logo to be used for external reference - probably based on this draft: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Non-TDF_logos.png So please stay tuned... Making LibreOffice remarkable. I want to discuss the idea that LibreOffice is not new software, nor is it ground-breaking in terms of features or user interface. LibreOffice is way behind its competitors in market share. Most of the reviews that I have read say this to be so. According to LockerGnome.net “ Openoffice, LibreOffice, Koffice, etc. vs. Microsoft Office” on December 25th, 2010 “People use Microsoft Office for a variety of reasons. MS Office is more widely used in the workplace, and so some people have no option. Some people are in school/college, and they are forced to use it. I personally like iWork better, because you can make a really polished presentation using Keynote. It's Office done better. Now you may be asking, Open Office is compatible with .doc and .docx files. Why should I pay for MS Office? Well, Open Office does a fantastic job with it's price. It can read MS Office files, but I've noticed that when I'm working on a PowerPoint presentation, Open Office will distort some of the images, or it will mess up some of the text. I can't say that Open Office is bad, but I prefer to use iWork.” By Catchatyou Tom Maxwell said on December 25th, 2010 on the same sight; “I agree with what catchatyou said. I've used Open Office before but really don't like it. First, it just doesn't look good but also it has some missing features and has a lot of problems with messing up documents that I've opened in it. Applications like iWork and MS Office are worth the cost.” What others say Gigom.com has stated that the TDF is clutching 1980's paradigm of the desktop Office Automation software. The problem with marketing today Today I have pointed out a lot of negative press that is related to LibO. What can be done about it? LibreOffice has a story and the story is what will make LibreOffice remarkable. The United States only knows Microsoft Office. Lets tell them about LibreOffice stressing the story. LibO is 100% organic software! Accentuate the positive! DO NOT talk about the fact that it is free. Talk about the ODF. According to Wilipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDocument_adoption) NATO with its 26 members (Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, the UK, and the USA) uses ODF as a mandatory standard for all members. What will be our FREE PRIZE? What free prize will be include with the purchase of the LibO DVD? What prize will get them eager to buy? Please throw out some ideas? [libreoffice-marketing] Making LibO Remarkable 2
Our #1 goal should be to make a better product than the other guy. This job is being handled very well by the TDF. So the #2 goal is to increase our growth, in terms of market share. Sure millions of GNU/Linux users have been using OOo / LibO for years. In the United States, number of companies using OOo / LibO can be counted on our hands. This is not good. In a capitalistic economy one must look at the bigger picture. If a FOSS product gains a large percentage of the market we must ask the question, how will our competition react to this? How will the government react to it? We must anticipate, and prepare for the next move. The LibO product is evolving and we must get its fans chanting. What will be the free prize in the box? How about bundling video tutorials. Free movies from the Blender Foundation. [libreoffice-marketing] Marketing and promotion.
Marketing and promotion of LibreOffice. I am proposing a campaign to get brand recognition in North America. This will be a three-fold process whereby we obtain the attention of our target audience with an introduction. We have to tell everyone what LibreOffice is. This will be done by carefully placing advertisements, conducting events, and handing out branded pens, pencils, mouse pads. Secondly, promote the advantages of LibO. (Need some help with this.) Third promote the long history of LibO ans OOo. Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Impress Advert with link.
you said it. That is the spirit if this advert. Dave Johnson On Dec 26, 2010 12:41 PM, Craig B. Olofson c.olof...@gmail.com wrote: Hello; If this is one ad in a campaign, I don't see a problem with it. If this is the only ad then I can see a need for further discussion. The reason I say this is that If we assume this is one of a series, the campaign will have time to deepen the themes through repetition and the use of different models. Speaking of themes, this person looks to me like a real life person engaged in fun. The fun is all theatrics and yet has elements of: - freedom, by intimating flight - personal power, through the iconic use of superman garb - everyman: the mask model tell me she could be any one of us real people I like it. Everyman shines (Clark Kent becomes Superman) when using our Liberating Tools(tm). One last point and this has to do with the use of good looking or hot looking people. Unless their inclusion is /incidental/ to a campaign, that is, by luck, I say don't make an effort to use hot looking people; male or female. To do otherwise hints at some of the same objectification of men and, egregiously, women in the ad campaigns deployed by the alcohol beauty industries. Sex may very well sell but, I'd hate to see any FLOSS community depend on that kind of campaign*. Freedom of speech and personal empowerment for real-life people. That pretty much sums up why I recommend FLOSS projects in the first place. Re: [libreoffice-marketing] LibO advert #2 with link
On Dec 25, 2010, at 2:31 AM, Tom Davies wrote: Hi :) I have a few suggestions but how close is this to completion? Note that it is always easier to criticise than to create. I think the advert is good work despite these points ... 1. Are those well-known legs? If not then a sexy girl's legs/ankles are likely to be more attractive. Ignore this comment if this advert is part of a set that aims at diversity and are likely to be displayed fairly near each other. This is stock photo. 2. The word hole has quite a few strongly negative connotations in english/american and not many good ones. Full of holes = lots of problems. The phrase instant fail is beginning to take over from that phrase but it is still in common usage. If you don't like someone or think they have done something fairly bad you might call them an ass-hole, total [ass] hole etc. To mitigate against that presumably this is due to be released at about the start of a famous golf tournament? If not then can we replace it and keep this one ready to roll out when their is one? I tried adding w to make it whole = complete or good (a suggestion of fresh baked bread) also whole in one is vaguely bhuddist/zen or something? See attached gif. Good point. I was going for the idea that you can spend less time at work and more time at play. 3. The paragraph at the bottom was almost right-justified but not quite and the 2nd line was strangely spaced away from the first line in a way that looked accidental. See attached gif. I can fix this. 4. The shading at bottom-right seems to end quite abruptly. Is it possible to smudge it down or give the reflection a similar (but much lighter) shadow that fades? I tried but i'm pretty hopeless at picture editing. I guess this has been tried and didn't work? 5. The wording the spreadsheet you've always wanted is a blatant lie. A false retrospective. Anyway we are the future rather than the past. How about something like the spreadsheet you will find you've always needed, hmm, tricky. It is more words and might not fit so well. The 4th line being advanced functions. was superb, the extra of spoils that a little, sorry. 6. I guess the With looks dumb in italics? 7. I really like the blocks of words. On the right we have always, professional data, [comprehensive] range. On the left it's pretty good too with the advanced functions. If this is going to be in magazines or on billboards then people might only see part of it at a time. The parts are excellent :) If it is ready to go then ignore my comments as what we have compares favourably with the type of thing we see out there from competitors. Give me any advert from anyone's running campaign and i could almost always pick more holes in it than i have with the Calc one. It would be great to get people from other parts of the world to attend but unfortunately we have no finance at this point to pay for expenses. We certainly can have skype at minimum. I'm waiting for Manfred Reiter to come back on the venue. As soon as we know I'll work out what conference facilities we can do - Maybe a video stream to the web. I'll also draw up a draft agenda so others can contribute too. I reiterate that we want people in Canada, USA, Mexico, Brazil, India, Africa, Australia etc etc. This will only work as a means of significantly funding developers if we can make it a global effort and we can devise a means of sustaining the people doing the training and assessing. I refined the section a bit (e.g. link to the Firefox video), so enjoy: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Ideas#Web-page_video_similar_to_the_.22Meet_Firefox.22 . @ Dave: Thanks! If we can do something like that ... just great. It would be insanely cool to have something ready for LibO 3.3! So, after joining the interview thing, is there time to do something like that? Any other thoughts? Dave, should the ideas be added to the wiki - that would make it easier to track it (especially for you)? An intro video would be great! From the perspective of potential new users, I think it would be really appealing to have a video intro and welcome message that we promote in a very visible location or locations. In fact, in wireframes I put together for the future LibO homepage, I suggested a video of this type, right next to the download button. (I have attached the wireframe to the wiki as an ODG, but I'll make a PNG and put it in the page for easy viewing momentarily: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Website/Site_IA_and_Wireframes ) Go for it! -Ben Benjamin Horst bho...@mac.com 646-464-2314 (Eastern) www.solidoffice.com -- E-mail to marketing+h...@libreoffice.orgmarketing%2bh...@libreoffice.orgfor instructions on how to unsubscribe List archives are available at http://www.libreoffice.org/lists/marketing/ All messages you send to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted What would be very cool would be to come up with something funny that would have the chance to go viral on YouTube. Can a plug-in be made to save OOXML format for LibO for a short term solution? On Oct 26, 2010, at 7:14 PM, Frank Esposito wrote: * It is ugly This is a very subjective call, so not worth consideration outside a UX needs improvement in some areas UX can make or break a product, just ask Steve Jobs and therefore IS worth consideration. Someone even brought up this point on the first conference call (sorry I cannot recall your name but you were correct) * It is slow Define slow, I have 3.2.1 on clients machines and is grease lightning fast, certainly faster than opening up all 4 of MS applications at the same time. this is subjective as not everyone has the same machine as you or tour clients, I was merely summerizing the responses form my own personal polling of why people use M$ office over OO. performance is an issue, this is known. compared to MS, it is comparable, but they are the team on the field right now... * It is clunky Define clunky in specific terms clunky and refined are in fact subjective terms, but once again Steve Jobs and his buddies over at Apple understand this. I wil try though: windows95: clunky OS X: not so much terminal:clunk gnome: not so much another example of clunky, I can insert page numbers by clicking 1 button in MSO, OO, not so much. * It has issues with MS doc and docx files (yes I know MS formats in an insane way and does not follow standards) Not as many issues as MSO has with ODF, and LibO/OOo is standards compliant yes but the world uses MSO so that point is moot if were are trying to get them to use LO/OO. and the average user or business IT person usually does not even know what standards compliant even means. All they care about is their employment agency only accepts a resume in word format When someone using OO/LO tries to save in a docx format and gets this: [image: LibreOffice 3.png] hosted link of pic in case the pic does not come through: http://imm.io/1NCo they will not use LO/OO in the future. As a professional writer, I cannot use OOo because my clients only accept M$ word docs, they don't care about standards, they care about what they can use to get their business done and most of them use MSO. And since we are trying to take their M$ world away form them, we have to play their game for now. unrefined Subjective again define if you want people to use your product, you must take subjective ideas into account. look what refinement did for the iPhone As someone who has worked in corporate IT in the U.S., and now in ecommence for a major U.S. corporation, This is the problem, :) I'll get to this further on. not sure what you mean, is it a problem I work there or is corp America the problem (in either case I agree, nonetheless I am not sure your point) here are my recommendations: * LO needs to match every single MS Office function, and then provide what MS Office is missing It does that already, Forms and PDF functionality just an example. not 100%, saving in MS format is huge, also there is no reliable grammar check (yes people in the U.S. use it) the review system is not as refined as MSO and as previously discussed in this list, there is no bibliography/reference manager, included in MSO 2007 and 2010, important for academia * The interface needs to become refined (think iphone refinement), maybe even adding the dreaded ribbon or option to switch between the two types) I agree with this, except for the ribbon. Iwould suggest that LibO/OOo still has greater market share than MSO2007/2010 ouside of Educational institutions I agree the ribbon is ugly (more subjectivity, sorry) and menus are better, but if we are trying to capture market from business users who just got used to the ribbon, it should be an option to have. * MS Office filters and converters need to be perfected Perfect is non achievable and a moving target no but compatible should mean compatible and agian we are trying to take market form them, this is not a technical wish it is a marketing wish. * Investigate a revision control system like such as Sharepoint or Google docs This I agree with, I'd like to see a function in the installer of a business version that gives the option of calling up an install of O3 spaces Not sure why this, OOo is available in many more languages than MS and I'm pretty sure LibO will be there soon as well, spell check works well as far as I can see, grammar checkers are bad voodoo and are more often wrong than right, however they can serve a purpose. If you study document production work flows by someone who is a professional at the game, not an IT person who rarely has any idea about producing richly formatted documents, you will find that grammar checkers are more often than not used as suggesters of
