Great, welcome! I'm Mike from The Document Foundation, and I work
together with my colleague Italo Vignoli on marketing and community
outreach topics.

Good to have you on the team! We have a bunch of presentations on our
wiki, although some are a bit older and Italo has newer versions:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Material

Regarding videos, we have many on our YouTube channel here:

https://www.youtube.com/c/LibreOfficeTheDocumentFoundation/videos

A lot of the recent ones are technical talks from the recent LibreOffice
Conference, but we also work on more "user friendly" videos such as this
one about LibreOffice 7.2 (thanks to the Indonesian community):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWmURg_rM2o

Is there anything in particular you'd like to work on? We also have
designs for flyers, social media infographics etc. If you have any
questions or want any specific materials, just let me know!

Cheers,
Mike

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Introduction

2020-08-04 Thread Italo Vignoli
Hi Laurent, tomorrow we are announcing LibreOffice 7.0, so Mike and me
are overburdened with last minute tasks. LibreOffice release notes are
another good place to start, as providing tutorials about new features
might also be a good idea. Ask is a good location, but there are many
questions which are really basic or too niche, and are not interesting
for the majority of users. What about having a look at these resources
and then have a chat with Mike and me ASAP? Best, Italo

I'm bilingual, French and English, if that matters any.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Introduction

2018-10-31 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi Nigel,

Welcome to the community, and thanks for providing some background on
what you've been involved with! I'm Mike, originally from Cumbria but
now living in Munich, and have been working at The Document Foundation
for a few years. I work with Italo Vignoli and other community members
on marketing materials, videos, events, social media, community outreach
and so forth.

Yes, you're right that LibreOffice is an easier "sell" than Linux as it
doesn't require changing a whole underlying system. Still, I find that
some people are sceptical about free things. On social media, we often
get questions like "How does LibreOffice compare to X?" or "How well
will LibreOffice work with my files?" -- To which I always respond, why
not just try it and see... You have nothing to lose :-)

If you're especially interested in marketing Linux in written form, we
in the community have often talked about creating articles about
LibreOffice features, that websites and magazines can then use as a
quick source of content. It could be a good way to spread the word, and
highlight some of the many things that LibreOffice does better than the
competition.

What do you think? Feel free to join our next marketing call, or indeed
we could have a chat on the phone at some point if you like.

Cheers!
Mike

[libreoffice-marketing] Introduction

2018-10-28 Thread Nigel Verity
Hi

I have just registered with the marketing group, so I thought I'd introduce
myself.

I am Nigel Verity from Shropshire, England but called "Nige" by everybody. I've
done a few HPR episodes under the alias of "Beeza".

I've worked in a variety of fields including diplomacy, commerce, software
development, tech writing and running art shows. Of these my longest spell was
over 20 years in the defence industry developing and troubleshooting logistics
tools. Right now I am self-employed, doing ad hoc tech writing, website
development and IT consultancy - the latter specialising in simplifying
business processes and reducing costs. Promoting the use of FLOSS plays a big
part of that, though the "Free Libre" part is sometimes harder to push than the
free (cost) and open source aspects.

Making the case for LibreOffice is usually the easiest "sell" as it does not
require users to adopt a different operating system. To be honest, though, I am
never entirely happy saying that LibreOffice is "just like" MS Office because
that gives the impression it is an MS Office clone, which we all know it
clearly isn't.

I would like to get involved with marketing LibreOffice because I would like to
be able to develop a different angle showing not just the areas of functional
overlap with MS Office but also differentiators to make the case for
LibreOffice in its own right.

Cheers

Nige

Actually, there are many areas of improvement for LibreOffice marketing,
and the backoffice is definitely one of them. We miss many of the
traditional numbers/statistics, as - for instance - we do not have a
real number for users, as we rely on downloads (not a real measurement).

Maybe, we can have a chat via skype/hangout after Wednesday (as we are
releasing LibreOffice 5.1, and I am fully booked for pre-briefings with
journalists).

I have coordinated LibreOffice marketing so far, and I have also managed
most of the marketing activities (apart from social media and some
online activities). Of course, someone with a marketing background is
always welcome, although marketing of free software needs a cultural
shift from traditional marketing (I have gone through this shift myself
around 2004, when I entered the OpenOffice project with my traditional
marketing background).

Not in particular, is there a great need for something in particular? I'm

If there's anything involving numbers/statistics, research, or something
like that (the "back" side of marketing, I guess you might call it), that's
likely where I can be the most useful :-)

I've not had any real experience in the field, so "no bad habits to

Honestly, I like working on a small budget - more space to be creative and
optimize (I'm a sucker for a problem of optimization).

If there are any projects that may be of special interest, please, by all

[libreoffice-marketing] Introduction

2012-11-15 Thread Fridolin

Hello to all LO Marketeers,

Having signed up to the LO Marketing group some time ago
I followed the various threads with some interest.

First of all a great THANKS to all who helped to develop
and market LO so far.

I'd like to introduce myself formally and
hopefully in the future be able to contribute
to the success of LO here in beautiful NZ.

I'm Fridolin, Austrian by birth and living in NZ.
Am self-employed working as handyman,
meaning, fixing things for people, among other things computers.

Almost all persons who approach me for help with computer
problems

I have been able to make aware of Opensource software
and many of them use either OpenOffice or now LibreOffice.

Here in Tauranga, together with a few other persons
I have been involved in organizing 2 Software Freedom Days.
(2010, 2011)
It is our intention to organize another one next year.
That would be one opportunity to expose LO software
to the public in the Bay of Plenty.

I am interested in getting involved in LO Marketing
here in NZ and to help educate people about Opensource software,
especially LibreOffice. I use it every day, I like it
and I think it worthwhile to get involved and to contribute
some of my time for this product.

I don't know where I can fit in but am sure
that some opportunity will come up . . . .

Once again thanks to all involved for their efforts
and lets work together to promote LO

Greetings,

Fridolin Kathan

I would like to show the date of the dictionary .dic file with the
dictionary information showing which one is the most up-to-date. The
default English dictionary files[s] is several years old. I found a .dic
file from this year so I created a updated one that could be used.

 English (Great Britain) English-British en-GB-oed 2005-06-13

This en_GB dictionary has it's .dic file [i.e. word list] dated for June
2005. There must be a word list out there that is more up-to-date. I did
find an unabridge dictionary word list that has about 213,550 words in it. I
have not looked at it to see if they made sure the words that must begin
with a capital letter is capitalized. I also have word lists with common
sir names and a few that have only male and female names in them. I have
one that has Bible words and another one with movie character names, actor's
 names, etc., etc..

It would be nice to produce our own dictionaries with word lists that are
not currently covered. I wonder how many people would want one that has
words, and maybe names, that are in the Christian Bible? Many of those
words are not part of the modern English language, since the most common
versions of the Bible has language used before 1600, I believe. It would be
mice to have a word list that is for other Science areas instead of just
Chemistry. I know that there was a person looking for Science related
dictionaries, a few months ago. Besides Chemistry and Medical ones, Latin
was the only other one that could be Science based, or used in Science.

I do have a US English names .oxt file that was produced a few years ago.
It was dated October 2008, but common names do not change much or many
new ones. Of course, my last name is not in the list, or any of the common
variations of it. Maybe it is just Great Britain origin, not ones that have
 [other?] European origins.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Introduction about me

Actually, the dictionary list did not have en_GB there when we started,
since the OOo dictionary list did not have one. I found it only a few
weeks ago and added it to the NA dictionary list.

I just checked. OOo's list still does not have en_GB, but they have:

1] Engligh Chemistry Dictionary
2] English English dictionaries with fixed dash
handling and new ligature and phonetic suggestion support

3] English (Australian)English Australian Dictionary
4] English (Canadian) Canadian English Spell Checking,
Hyphenation and Thesaurus

5] English (New Zealand)English New Zealand Dictionary
6] English (South African) South African English spell checking dictionary
7] English (US) US English Spell Checking Dictionary

--

NA has:
-

1 ] English (Australian) English Australian Dictionary
2 ]
Australian-medical-dict---en-au-med2008-07-01
3 ] English (Canadian) Canadian English Spell Checking,
Hyphenation and Thesaurus

4*] English (Great Britain) English-British en-GB-oed 2005-06-13
5 ] English (New Zealand) English New Zealand Dictionary
6 ] English (South African) South African English spell checking
dictionary

7 ] English (US)US English Spell Checking Dictionary
8*] US English with a .dic file
dated April 19 2011
9*]
English-US-Medical-openmedspelApril-22-2008
 Chemistry
Dictionary over 105,000 words

10] Multi localized version Australian, Canadian, Great Britain, New
Zealand, US
English dictionaries with fixed dash handling and new ligature
and phonetic suggestion support -- 2010-02-15 thru 2010-03-09

contains words from the following dictionaries, etc.:
   en_AU, en_CA, en_GB, en_US, en_ZA, hyphen_GB, hyphen_US,
thesaurus_GB/US

* - not found on the OOo dictionary list.

---

I would like to show the date of the dictionary .dic file with the
dictionary information showing which one is the most up-to-date. The
default English dictionary files[s] is several years old. I found a
.dic file from this year so I created a updated one that could be used.

English (Great Britain) English-British en-GB-oed 2005-06-13

This en_GB dictionary has it's .dic file [i.e. word list] dated for June
2005. There must be a word list out there that is more up-to-date. I
did find an unabridge dictionary word list that has about 213,550 words
in it. I have not looked at it to see if they made sure the words that
must begin with a capital letter is capitalized. I also have word
lists with common sir names and a few that have only male and female
names in them. I have one that has Bible words and another one with
movie character names, actor's names, etc., etc..

It would be nice to produce our own dictionaries with word lists that
are not currently covered. I wonder how many people would want one that
has words, and maybe names, that are in the Christian Bible? Many of
those words are not part of the modern English language, since the most
common versions of the Bible has language used before 1600, I believe.
It would be mice to have a word list that is for other Science areas
instead of just Chemistry. I know that there was a person looking for
Science related dictionaries, a few months ago. Besides Chemistry and
Medical ones, Latin was the only other one that could be Science based,
or used in Science.

I do have a US English names .oxt file that was produced a few years
ago. It was dated October 2008, but common names do not change much
or many new ones. Of course, my last name is not in the list, or any of
the common variations of it. Maybe it is just Great Britain origin, not
ones that have [other?] European origins.

Hello Rajesh,

I have read the other emails in this thread, so have followed the
interaction with Tim and the zip files Tim has made available to you -
just to let you and the others know.

I think producing a disc for use in the way you describe is a wonderful
action for you to undertake.

However, I also think that starting with the NA DVD files supplied,
although quite adequate to the task, would be a mistake for you - now
let me explain why I say that and offer an opinion on how else you might
proceed.

Why - simply because there is a mechanism in place as a shared resource
that will in the long run make your efforts more likely to succeed and
augment your efforts, as an individual, in a way that will make the work
product more useful to everyone.

How - by utilizing the SilverStripe CMS system and procedures in place,
on TDF servers, to produce your distribution DVD/CD image, for
electronic distribution, as well as a focal point for ongoing updates
and support.

If you take the raw files from the current NA DVD image and just
translate them to your language, you can later move that to the CMS
system, but it will be more work then is necessary. When Tim and I and
others actually started the NA .iso image that SilverStripe system for
multiple language release was not quite ready, and that was one reason
that we just started on a separate server, as fully static HTML.

You however are starting at a point where the CMS system, custom scripts
and procedures are fully in place and I would strongly and vigorously
encourage you to avail yourself of this resource and opportunity.

As a first step I would recommend you subscribe to our projects mailing
list [1] and to open an email thread there about your language disc
image project. I assure you that myself and the others there (mostly
folks also on this list, BTW) will join you and offer assistance,
whether you use the CMS system (did I mention that I strongly recommend
you do so) or not.

@Tim - I think we can leverage the NA DVD pages/files and assistance to
Rajesh best by (finally) getting those files/pages to the CMS, then
having him start from those files - even if it is one file, per day -
that is really only two weeks (+ a few days), so just a matter of us
hunkering down doing it as a little sprint like effort.

Best wishes,

Drew Jensen

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Introduction about me

2011-06-14 Thread Rajesh Sankar Iyer
Hey Tom,
I need an information about the DVD idea. I am the Vice-President of my
a club in my college. We organize a lot of programs where we bring students
from all over the state together for sharing their ideas on their field. I
would like to know if I can distribute CD's containing installation file of
LibreOffice along with the user guide? If yes, then can I charge them the CD
cost alone?

Yes, welcome in. Mostly people like to post at the bottom of threads which
might take a while to get used to. There are quite a few plans here to
 produce
localised Dvds of LibreOffice to distribute at conferences and such-like.
  Some
people even try to sell them in order to raise funds to make that a more
sustainable venture and/or to give a percentage back to TDF. There might
 be
some good ideas for what to include on a Dvd.
 Good luck and welcome in

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Introduction about me

2011-06-14 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
LibreOffice is released under copy-left licences a bit like the GPL,
specifically the MPL and LGPL licences. So, yes you can charge a reasonable
amount for the Cds, more than the cost of the cd alone.

Generally, people keep the price as low as possible which means they can't
afford to give special discounts when they need to and it also restricts how
much they can build-up against the day when they need to replace hardware such
as Cd/Dvd-burners.

Err, i found the German one which was very advanced a long time ago.
http://de.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-box-dvd/

There is a wiki page for the American one
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Americas_LibreOffice_DVD
But there are no language codes along the top to navigate to projects for other
languages.

I'm not sure about how all this is going but other people might be more helpful
later.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Introduction about me

2011-06-14 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

You might want to look at what the North American Community DVD Project
is working on.
We took the idea that was started by the German group and modified it
for the North American region.

Right now we have English-only, Spanish-only [alpha testing], with
French-only being worked on offline.

We have our primary Windows/Linux/MacOSX DVD plus a Windows-only DVD.

This is the link to the English 3.3.2 DVD testing pages
http://libreoffice-na.us/English/index.html

This is the link to the main portal page where you can look at what it
being worked on that is being tested online.

http://libreoffice-na.us/

We have the 3.3.2 install version of our DVD[s], and working on a 3.4.x
DVD as well.

We have the Install files, Documentation, Extensions and Dictionaries,
Templates, Artwork and Galleries, plus some extra software packages.

This may give you an idea of what can be done for a DVD. If you want to
use the same format as we do, which is based off the original DVD style
from the Germans, we can send you archives of the needed files and
folders for the CSS and images.

You might want to look at the dictionary list we have. The large list,
below the small one, has as many dictionaries I could find. Since there
are many languages and dialects in India, I hope there are a few in this
list that would be helpful for the students of your college. As far as
I have been told, or read, there are ways to create simple dictionaries
from word lists. So if you need a dictionary for a language/dialect,
all you need to start is a large enough word list. There should be
enough documentation online, somewhere, to give you the information to
go from that point.

Let me/us know what you think.

At the moment, lots of work is going on in various areas of TDF, and
