RE: MD: Transferring MD to CD

1999-11-26 Thread Martin Schiff

I think the key may be that I always cut my live recordings in the applause
between songs, so even if there was some noise, it would not be noticeable.
Either that, or Sound Forge or Adaptec's Easy CD Creator is handling it.
Whatever the reason is, it is not noticeable at all, either as a distortion
or difference in the way the applause sounds.

Hi Kevin,
Odd question that one... I can't help but wonder why you wish to tilt the
unit as it should work satisfactorily at any angle, it is a portable after
all.
I wouldn't recommend placing anything other the MDs and suitable
batteries inside your unit, and theres absolutely no way you'll be able
to get a standard ps/2 keyboard inside it.

Hope this helps (sort of :-)

MD: Dixons and the MD702

1999-11-26 Thread Keith Wilson

Well you lot most probibly don't care too much about all the hassle I had
with my Sharp unit, but I thought it best to warn you lot about our old
friends Dixons, especially seeing as it is xmas and all!

Recap:

Bought a MD702 18 months ago for 299.99 UKPounds, it went wrong outside the
guarantee, but _was_ covered by MasterCare. Took it back to be repaired
(UTOC error) 4 times. Hit the roof after the 4th, contacted the
MD of Dixons, no messing about any more! Took it back in to be written off
for good this time.

They said that I would have to wait 10 days after it had been received by
them to get my money back. I waited... and waited then after just over two
weeks emailed them to find out what was going wrong. They said that they
were waiting for it to be written off. Spat my dummy out, they said that
the vouchers will be in the post the next day.

Got the v(ouch)er last night for ... £200, they said that that is all it
was worth now. Funnily enough, I hit the roof again, and when I came too,
rubbed my head, and emailed the Manager of the Customer Services, who was
"dealing" with the case.

They contacted me again and said that they would fax the details to the
store that I was going to.

I don't know what you lot think, but I don't think that it is fair that
they should offer one price when I payed a lot more initially.

Typical 'insurance' companies, always your friend until you need them... I
wonder if Sharp would like to hear about this...

So todays lesson kiddies, purchase a nice dummy and attatch it to yourself
via some string and a saftey-pin. This way when ever you spit the thing

Hey Ray,

From your brief description, this seems like a fairly straightforward piece of
 software.

Since I don t see myself as a software expert it s not for me the judge how
straightforward is the VMM software.

Presumably the md does not store the MP3 in its compressed form, but
each track will take the same space as on a cd - i.e. still only 74 minutes of
sound, but of the poorer MP3 audio quality.

Since they record the sound card output, It s obvious that they not record MP3 in MP3
format, but they MD records it in ATRAC (as audio MD usually do : -) , so
mathematically there is degradation due to the additional ATRAC compression.

However I have good sound card and to my ear, the recorded music quality satisfies me
(yes it bothered me that it s not pure digital recording - However it was surprisingly
more than OK).
Re 74min: Yes, I can record 74 minutes (as with CD), but I pay for it $2/74min rather
than $100/60min for my Rio s Flash card.

 Which sites do Voquette use?

I check their software with their site Voquette.com - they feature music from mp3.com
and other sites (re legal: it s their biz) as well as streaming audio.
I also checked it with other sites - most of them it worked OK, however I found some
sites that I had some problems with. (But the software did not stuck there, it just
skipped it. I sent them email: I will update you on this). So I was not logged all
night due to tracks that were not downloaded.

Go!Zilla and windows scheduled task manager

I used this and other programs and enjoyed them - I find the VMM much easier to use
and it also supports streaming audio (not only files transfers).
Personally I use it mainly for daily recordings of Cnet Radio programs. (I DD the
RealAudio hyperlink of their daily program into the VMM and scheduled it to be
recorded onto the MD every day at 6:00AM, so by the time I wake up I get my MD with my
daily technical briefings - for me it s a Killer App. I also tried their e-mail
recordings, the audio quality is more than OK, however the fact that I could not reply
instantaneously to the email, made not use it for this application)

I believe I've seen your email before

I believe you did, but usually I am a passive reader. (I only jump in when I really
hate, or like something)

Let me know your take on this.

RE: MD: MO technology and MD data usage

1999-11-26 Thread Mark I. Ross

I would question your first point... ;)

Agree that write speed would be less than read speed; however if you
consider that a MD recorder can accept a streaming digital input of CD
quality audio (via the optical in), encode it with ATRAC, AND write it to
the disk, all in real-time - then i think you'll find the bandwidth of the
system quite sufficient for removable media purposes on a PC. Plus the
benefit of the disks not being as easily affected (as floppies) by magnetic
fieldsit all adds up...

In any case it would be vastly better than floppy drive technology which
should have been obseleted years ago...

IMO anyways ;)

L8r,
mark...

-Original Message-
Subject: Re: MD: MO technology and MD data usage

snip

The write speed is probably the biggest problem (ie I would think the read
speed would be less of a factor) - there is a finite time taken to heat the
metallic substrate to it's Curie Point and also a finite time from that
point for the write magnetic head to align the substrate.
The factors governing the time taken for these events are probably related
to laser power output and disc groove/spot size. The groove and spot size
is fixed by the MD format and laser power output is probably limited by
cost and physical size in relation to fitting it in a portable recorder.

MD: Optical leads, partial solution

1999-11-26 Thread John Graham

Does anyone have a web or email address where I can buy a couple of 2M (or
3M) Toslink to Toslink optical leads?

I can supply Toslink-Toslink optical leads! Prices are as follows:

[snip]

My need for optical leads follows this weeks (hesitant) purchase of a
SBLive!Platinum combo with it's Live!DriveII box of sockets. It came with a
2M Toslink to 3.5mm lead (which I already had, a shorter one came with the
MZ-R55) but I needed a Toslink-Toslink lead to connect my MDS-JE520 deck
to the computer. That way I can record radio from my tuner to hard disk via
the mixer and MD deck.

I noticed that if I simply poked the 3.5 end of the optical cable at the
Toslink socket the sound burst through loud and clear. Since this was
indeed a spare lead I tackled it with some fine sandpaper until the leading
edge of the plug was thin enough to poke into the Toslink socket and stay
there unaided. A result!!

OK, I need another lead so that I have bi-directional capability between
deck and pc but I've saved the price of a few disks!

For the record, the SBLive!Platinum is excellent, and surprise, surprise,
installed into NT4 (SP5, dual PII) first time and works fully as expected.
Given all the hassle I had with previous AWE32 and 64 cards with NT4 I was
mildly astonished.

All I need now is a software recorder that can be started by the task
scheduler and go straight into record mode. Anyone know how I can do this?
Waiting up to record the Essential Selection at 2:00am brings me into
conflict with the trouble and strife :(

Re: MD: Sony MD discam

It's very cool but with two HUGE drawbacks not included that are found
on Sony Mini DV Camcorders:

No IEEE 1394 Firewire Link, therefore, no way of transferring MD Discam
Digital Video to any kind of digital tape for making copies or
assembling MPEG2 quality movies of longer than 20 minutes in length
(assuming you use the variable bit function and it records the longest
possible video on disc-otherwise, anywhere between 10 to 20 minutes.)
Totally useless for semi-professional or professional purposes except as
a still image camera.

No ability to dub a second audio track in. You can add an audio track in
later but you can't add it to your original audio track without erasing
it, no two track audio-and you know it should be able to do this.

Another drawback about this camera, found on most Sony Mini DV and
Digital 8 camcorders, but not the MD Discam: No Nightshot.

Come on, Sony, you can do better!
