MD: Sound quality on MT15

1999-12-07 Thread Joost de Meij

2. Anyone have experience with the Sharp MT-15? Is
it possible that in an effort to make a lower cost
unit Sharp cut corners on quality (I would have
thought that just cutting out the remote and
rechargeable battery would have been enough of a costreduction

I have a MT-15, and i don't hear any differences between the
recordings i make with my MDS-JE520, and my MT-15.

Re: MD: 80 min MD's

1999-12-07 Thread Dodge

Another rant about those 80 min md's
Well, I solved the mystery about those 3 hours
I recorded some very short tracks, and it seems that minidisc recognized them shorter
than they
really were...
i use a mz-r30 and a mds-s37...
these are older recorders, but they do the job well
could it be because i use these older devices, the recording time was a bit messed up ?

Anyway
I live in Belgium, and the price over here is about 5$ a piece...
but, i saw sony advertising a millennium pack, with 5 premium 74' + 5 coulour 74's AND
one free
80' MD
It cost about 30 $

Well, until here the ranting

That's right because when recording in mono, you essentially get double the

Re: MD: Why Sharp ATRAC sucks (a review)

1999-12-07 Thread Ralph Smeets

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Of course.. but, at least for me, part of what makes listening to music
enjoyable is hearing the subtle harmonics of real acoustic instruments,
played by real humans, in the natural reverb of a real studio. Audio
compression, unlike any other audio tradeoff (the quality of the amp,
speakers, speaker cables, etc..), tends to affect that "liveness" in a way
very difficult to describe, and for me, can definitely poorly impact my
listening experience. As such, I'd prefer to do some very careful listening
tests myself, get an idea of what the best approach is to compress my music
(whether with MP3 or MD), find something that I'm happy with, and then sit
back to enjoy the music without having to worry about it again. While I'm
normally very forgiving as to stereo setups, and am perfectly happy
listening to music on just about any decent headphones or speakers, there's
something about digital compression that really rubs me the wrong way if
it's not done right, and unfortunately for me, it really does hurt my
 listening experience.

ATRAC 1 had to trow away a fixed number of bits in each of it's three
frequency bands. Since ATRAC 3, this fixed number is variable.

ATRAC tends to trow away frequencies that are 'unhearable'. ATRAC 4 and up,
use a schema that tries to trow away noise. There's a lot of information
in a digital signal that is near impossible to hear for the 'normal'
human ear.

Jake, I believe you are one of the (un?)lucky ones that has the ability
to hear more detail than the average person. You like MD, but you can
'easily' hear it's MD to.
MD is made for the public. ATRAC has evolved into something that can't be
distignuished by the average human from real. This is what MD is about!

Cheers,
Ralph

Re: MD: DO NOT ORDER minidisco's R90 Servired leather case

1999-12-07 Thread Ralph Smeets

I feel bad in that I've recommended a couple of people to buy the case from
Minidisco (since their delivery is MUCH faster than Servired's--2-3 days
vs. 4 weeks), but I've been told that the case they got didn't fit the unit
correctly, and now I can see why. If I hear from the powers that be at
Minidisco, I'll let you guys know.

Huh?

Minidisco is based in America and Servired is based in Argentinia. So if
you live in America, it's normal that Minidisco is faster. However, how do
you explain their 10 days average delivery time to Europe compared to your
20 days (4 weeks) delivery time to America?

MD: digital output from PC

1999-12-07 Thread Matt Vukin

When recording MP3s to MD, it has been reccomended that one use a digital output card
from their computer to avoid all the effects of compression. Does this also work for
recording cds digitally to MD from the CD-ROM tray? I don't have a digital output on
my cd player for my stereo. If I could also record cds digitally to MD from my
computer, in addition to mp3s, the card would kill two birds with one stone. Thanks

Re: MD: Minidisco's Servired R90 case UPDATE

1999-12-07 Thread byyoun

Well... I guess actual delivery time from Servired in Argentina is also
about a week to 10 days in the US. What I meant was that if you order from
Servired directly, more often than not, you have to wait for them to make
the case as they probably won't have it in stock (as was the scenario the 4
times I've ordered from them) so the turnaround time is usually 4-5 weeks.
But the cases are worth it.

Anyway, Minidisco has removed the R90 leather case from their order page,
so that's a step in the right direction. I can count 4 people that have
requested returns from them, so that probably has something to do with it.

Re: MD: bookshelf system vs deck

1999-12-07 Thread jds

Depends on the deck, and depends on the bookshelf system. :-)
If you get good equipment you shouldn't notice any difference in
quality. The shelf system has the advantage of having the other components
available to listen to and play with as well. The big thing to watch
for on a book shelf system will be that it has digital in (assuming you're
using a digital sound card on your computer.) Also, try to find one
with optical out for recording later to your portable. I had a nice
shelf system but the optical out was only for the cd player (with built
in md recorder, that didn't make a ton of sense.)

good luck

Is it possible to record in mono mode on the JE320? I haven't been able to

minutes or so of recording time (particularly since the incoming signal is
mono anyway).

MD: MD to Computer CD-R Question

1999-12-07 Thread Matthew Wilder

If anyone reads this and could email me with some words of advice
I would appreciate it. I have a Sony MZ-R30 that I use to make live
concert recordings. My computer is 4 years old and I intend to buy a new
one in the next few weeks, and I want to get a good CD-R burner in it and
the software and sound card that will allow me to connect my minidisc
player/ recoder to my computer so that I can make audio CD's. Any
suggestions? I know that I do not have an optical out on my MD, one of
these days I want to get a unit to put with the rest of my stereo shelf
system, but until then I am not too worried about having an optical in on
my computer, but I guess if the price is right it cannot hurt! If you
could email me directly or directly and to the list (others might be
curious) I would apprecite that.

I was actually quite suprised when I discovered there WAS generational loss.
My work with wavelet compression had led me to believe that the transform
would have a degree of symmetry, so that re-applying it to its own output
would yield the same result again. I still think this would be possible, but
I expect the constraints of symmetry would make the result sound noticeably
worse than ATRAC, so ATRAC is a better compromise for most users.

Yeah, it looks like we goofed on the Servired case's compatibility with the

Sorry about the confusion!
Also, thanks for the tip on Servired's specifically designed R90 case. I'll
look into getting a supply, but because they come from Argentina, they'll
take a while to stock.

MD: Revue: etymotics with portable level, etc.

1999-12-07 Thread Edward Gosfield III

Just got my Etymotics. (4S)

I am listening through them to a CD play on my computer as i write
this. The isolation from outside noise is amazing. The computer
internal CD player headphone output will drive them louder than i can
stand to listen. (solo Alto recorder CD)

The other strange sensation is harder to describe:

There is none of the usual feeling of air hitting your eardrums, nor
the usual Brownian motion sound of air on your eardrums. This made me
think at first that the highs were down, but i compared them to my
Stax electrostatics (which i still like better, so far) and the highs
were very close. I wasn't listening to mouse squeaks, cymbals with
brushes, rosin on a violin bow, or anything else extremely high. Solo
Recorder, bluegrass, voice, Vivaldi concerto with recorder and
strings. You can hear the air on the edge of the attack on the
recorder, and the attack sound on plucked acoustic bass strings, so i
think the highs are there. The sensation is one of the sound truly
coming from inside your own body...the head, of course. The bass is
pretty surprising too. If you tense your jaw muscles it interferes
with the sound, as does physical contact with the signal cables.

So far: I like the bass better than the Sennheiser 580 (tighter, and
perhaps lower), and the highs almost as much as the Stax (less
smooth). The physical feeling of using them will take some getting
used to. I have very narrow ear canals, and YMMV.

The Etys sound very sensitive to microphone sibilants and other sharp
edgy transients, and since they don't ring much on the spec charts, i
suppose this is just their own form of accuracy. But it is their most
noticeable characteristic to me. Otherwise, smooth, clear, natural,
very well isolated. I hope not too fragile. time will tell.

In playing a Bartok Concerto for Orchestra on a Sharp MD702 directly
from the headphone output, the crescendos were loud enough to be
uncomfortable. The absence of air sensation, caused by the earpieces
occluding my ear canals makes them seem a little softer than other
phones at least initially. But when you feel your eardrums clamp, you
know you are over 90 dB, and getting into tinnitis territory.

boy are they convenient.

Mine arrived with one defective filter, which made the sound fail on
one side almost instantly. I was pretty pissed off (had to go pick
them up at the FEDEX office after work), but after trying every
headphone outlet in my system, and several different pieces of
equipment, i tried changing the filter, and the sound returned.

I will see what HeadRoom wants to do about this. Filters are $15.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I suppose now i have to consider an AirHead headphone amp, but *not*
because there is too little volume on my Sharp.
