Yah yah, I bet you're all sick of hearing about this. Now you can actually hear it for
yourself, if you so desire. I snuck a recording of it earlier tonight and it actually
showed up on the recording I made! That at least tells me it isn't *that* high pitched
after all and that I (luckily?) don't have some hearing thing going on.

Visit http://members.aol.com/zachr330/mystery_noise and download them for yourself.
There's a wav and an mp3, each about 35 seconds long.

The mp3 didn't seem to keep much of the high pitched whine I've been talking about,
but it came through pretty darn good on the wav file.

I played around with some EQs in Sound Forge and even with 20 db of attenuation at 16
kHz, the noise wasn't completely gone.

I'd be interested in knowing if a) anyone else on the list can hear this easily and b)
anyone else has a freakin' clue what this is. And it is MD related, because I recorded
it on one. :P

Hi everyone.

Just a quick note to say hi, my names Jason Lynch, i'm 18 and I just
subscribed to this list today.
A few days ago i ordered my first portable MD recorder, a Sony MZ-R91.
Hopefully it should arrive here sometime soon. I'm in Australia.

Can anyone suggest any good places online to buy a stereo mic for live
recordings? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, so it don't have to be
too fancy.

Anyway, i look forward to the world of minidisc that lies before me, and
sharing it with you people!

Cheers,
Jason Lynch

Well, I saw a directional "Shotgun" mike at Best Buy for under $20 if I
remember correctly. You could use that and track it down.

If you don't have a shotgun mike, maybe you can put your existing mike
inside a bottle or card board tube, cover the bottom ( where the mike
is) with foam, to make a makeshift directional mike.

The Sony cigarette lighter socket adaptors should be very easy to come by, I
would imagine. As for extending the battery performance of the R55, the only
way I can see without actually modifying the unit as such, would be to make
a battery pack out of larger cells (like C or D size, despite their bulky
nature) and plug it into the DC socket of the R55. Ensure that the battery
pack is assembled to supply the appropriate voltage, of course.

Adios,

I'm assuming Sony will stock them (go to a local Sony Centre - beware, when
I asked about a mains adaptor for my Discman, the quoted 23 UKP..), else go
to your local Maplins/Tandy and try out their power adaptors until you find
one with the right size plug and the correct specs (good luck!). From
looking at the error messages in the manual, it should tell you if it's out
of spec (the "Hi DC in" message).

2.) How can you extend the battery life of the Sony MZ-R55? Please make =
it easy, I don't trust myself with a soldering iron...

Either use the supplied battery adaptor (and some pairs of AAs), or buy
yourself a spare NiMH battery or two. Superfi ( http://www.superfi.co.uk )
stock them for 10 UKP each.

MD: dropouts

2000-01-05 Thread Jim Gray

I've found problems with Memorex blanks on several occasions, in 2
different recorders; the problem is that the disc 'hangs' up and won't
record or play past a certain point. Sometimes it will record all the
way thru, but on playback it stops at a certain point and the timing
display flashes the second before and after repeatedly, other times it
just stops recording at a spot and leaves the rest of the disc blank.
This happened on a Sony JE520 and a little Aiwa bookshelf model. It
hasn't happened yet on my Sharp 722, but it's always a Memorex blank
that does it.

MD: Dropouts

2000-01-05 Thread Faizal Yusmal

Hi all,

I have a Sony Neige MD that has been recorded three times over. Before each
recording, I did an "All Erase" to clear the TOC. While trying to do a name
stamp on the third recording on a Sharp 831, I got a "Can't Readu" error
message. So I put the MD in a Sony 930 deck to title the disc name only.
Thereafter, I could name stamp all the track titles without a problem on the
831. While listening to the first track:
1. Consistent sound dropouts on the 831
2. No sound dropouts on the 930 deck
3. No sound dropouts on the MZ-R50

I'm stumped. Does anybody have an explanation for this?

On another totally different recording done on a TDK MD. The total opposite
happens. When playing the last track:
1. No sound dropouts on the 831
2. Sound dropouts on the 930 deck
3. Sound dropouts on the MZ-R50

Again I'm stumped

 Hello people,

After I eventually subscibed to this list I've now got a few questions =
to ask (in the vague hope they'll be answered...).

1.) For us English people on this list, does anyone know where I can get =

Try The Sony Centre or anywhere selling Sony stuff. You can use virtually
and cassette adapter with your MD (the ones that are designed for portable
CD players are ideal) but you will need to check that any power supply
system (plugging into cigarette lighter) is the correct type. I would be
better to get the proper Sony adapter designed for use with their MDs for
this.

2.) How can you extend the battery life of the Sony MZ-R55? Please make =
it easy, I don't trust myself with a soldering iron...

Well the simplest method is to attach the supplied AA battery pack. You can
also swap batteries whilst the unit is running without it stopping and
without risk of damage.

MD: MD and Creative Soundblaster Platinum

2000-01-05 Thread Alan Dowds

Hello all

Does anyone have any experience with the SB Live Platinum, and LiveDrive II?
I though it would be ideal for MD - optical ins outs, etc etc

Sadly, I'm having awful trouble getting it to output digitally, recognise my
CD-ROM drive, or do anything really. The software doesn't recognise audio
CDs, I can't get any internal SPDIF input from my CD and it basically
doesn't seem to work. Normal windows noises and DirectX works okay, games
seem fine.

My CD is a generic 36x (Ultima Electronics). Could that be the problem? The
CD has what looks like a SPDIF out connector (which fits the SB Live cable),
but it isn't marked as such, so may not be at all.

Thanks

Alan

2000-01-05 Thread Spicefish9

Hello!

I was in the same predicament as you a few months ago. My soundcard has
no digital in so i was forced to make an analog CD. What I did was get an
RCA cable that joins into one input plug. I stuck that bad boy in my comp's
soundcard in and the two RCA cables in my minidisc deck's output. The
program I use is called Jetaudio and works great. A good audio editor is
necessary to take the input from your deck and convert them to wavs. If you
do this at a sample rate of 44.1 it is near CD quality. I cannot tell unless
i listen on incredibly great speakers.

hope that helped,

There are no overhead power lines anywhere in the neighborhood - the

dense wooded area.

I thought there was some sort of a power box there at the end of the
street, but it is labled "CATV" - cable television. There's also one of those
slender telephone company boxes sticking up out of the ground, too.

The nearest television towers are about 15 miles away, along with radio.
The nearest two-way radio or cell phone towers are about 1/2 mile away...
There's certainly nothing obvious in or near the neighborhood. :)

If I get brave I may go down there during the day sometime and poke around
-- I'm less likely to get the cops called on me then, hehehe! I would find it
very hard to believe that no one in that area hears that noise -- in person,
it actually *hurts* my ears in some places!
