I couldn't find them in Serramonte Target either. I will check the Saratoga
Target this weekend.

A few weeks ago someone mentioned that they saw convertible
TosLink/Miniplug digital cables at Target. I offered to pick a few up the
next time I went to Target and a couple people responded that they would
 like one.

The bad news is that I went to the "super" Target in San Francisco today
and the cables were nowhere to be seen. Sorry to disappoint.

Re: MD: SCMS

2000-09-03 Thread jeanmougin

OK. So, SCMS strippers don't remove SCMS. They change the SCMS status to pass-by
the interdiction.
If I play a digitally recorded MD on a deck and I use a SCMS stripper between
the optical out of the deck
and the optical in of a recorder, I'll pass-by the SCMS interdiction. But what
will be the SCMS status of this new digital copy (unlimited copy or one
generation allowed?)?

David W. Tamkin a écrit:

 Jeanmougin wrote,

 | When you make a copy of a CD with optical cable, SCMS is implemented on
 | the MD.

SCMS was implemented on the CD to start, but it was set to allow one gene-
ration of digital copying. Permission to copy does not mean absence of SCMS:
SCMS is the *system* (that's what the second S stands for) and it is imple-
mented on all consumer digital audio media.

[The problem with saying "this doesn't have SCMS" or "there's no SCMS here"
to describe an SCMS-compliant recording that allows copying is that saying
it that way destroys the distinctions among (1) a recording or signal whose
SCMS bits allow one generation of copying, (2) a recording or signal whose
SCMS bits allow unlimited generations of recopying, and (3) a storage format
{such as a .wav or .mp3 file on a hard disk} or a transmission protocol
{such as AES/EBU or an analog signal} that truly does not carry SCMS infor-
mation. Only type #3 can properly be described as "not having SCMS."]

 | The copy bit 10 is written and prevents a second generation digital copy.

"10" is the designation for "no further digital copying" on DATs; on MDs it's
actually "01" (in bits 6 and 5 of the segment's status word).

 | But is it the MD recorder that puts SCMS protection on the disc or does the
 | MD recorder only write the copy bit of the source? In other words, is it
 | the digital out of a deck (CD, MD) that sends the SCMS status or is it the
 | MD recorder that writes the SCMS status during recording?

Both. (Pardon the anthropomorphisms here, but they do facilitate the expla-
nation.) The source machine reports the SCMS status of whatever it is play-
ing and the destination machine decides how to respond. If the source sends
out "I am playing an SCMS-penultimate recording" in its S/PDIF output, then
the destination machine decides "This signal is SCMS-penultimate, and I obey
SCMS, so I must mark the copy I'm writing as SCMS-final." When you try to
copy an SCMS-final source digitally, it is the destination machine that de-
cides, "This signal is SCMS-final, and I obey SCMS, so I won't record it."
A professional-grade recorder might have logic instead of say, "I'm receiving
an SCMS-final signal, but my switches are set to disobey SCMS and to write
SCMS bits that allow unlimited recopying (or to write SCMS bits that allow
one more generation, or however the switches are set), so that's what I'll
 do."

Re: MD: Digital recordings and track marks...

2000-09-03 Thread Stories

Timothy Stockman has since posted that the beast does exist and resides
in
P-channel on CDs. The creature has never, it appears, found a home in
S/PDIF, though.

But there is no code or signal in S/PDIF that means "new track starts
now."

| Not meaning to question you, uneccessarily - but is this definitely
true? I
| was sort of under the impression (hazy memory) that there was an
instruction
| that essentially meant "new track"?

People see track marks reproduced in direct digital transfers, assume
that
they are copied by some such signal, and proceed to speak in such
terms. But
for disproof try this: connect a digital (optical or coax) cable from
one MD
unit to another and set the source machine to play the entire source
disc;
notice the the nice track marks on the copy. Then set the source
machine to
keep repeating a single track, and see how the repetitions of the
track's
contents accumulate in an ever-growing single track on the copy.

I would argue that it's the receiving device that doesn't accept "new
track starts now"
data. All the information needed is present in the S/Pdif signal
"validity Bit / CD-Subcode"
data area.

My CD player outputs track number, track time index numbers within
the
S/Pdif signal.

The Signal coming out of my JE-520 contain track number information,
though no track time
(Interestingly, track numbers only go to 9, then it marks them with
letters...)

And my DTC-ZE700 DAT sends start ID's when the occur, (these are
DEFINATLY used to mark tracks
via S/Pdif AES/EBU digital connections!)

This "Creature's home" has always been in the SPdif spec.
wether ther reciving devices actually use the data to mark tracks is
another matter.

MD: LP: in track titles

2000-09-03 Thread David W. Tamkin

Pages 16 and 17 of the MDS-JB940 manual (now up on the MDCP courtesy of
Nicolas Rose-Hirchenhan) describe a firmware-implemented naming convention
for LP2 and LP4 tracks. The 940 has a setting (on by default) to put "LP:"
(the manual shows no space after the colon, but in practice there might be
one) at the start of the title of any LP2 or LP4 track; a player or recorder
that groks LP will automatically suppress it and show only the rest of the
title. (The characters still take up titling space, though.) But a machine
that doesn't do LP will show the prefix, explaining why the track is playing
silently.

MD: Sony MDR-NC10

2000-09-03 Thread Rich Kim

Hi, I just joined the list and was wondering if anyone owned a pair of these
noice cancelling earbuds. The rubber earpiece tore on my pair and I can no
longer get a good seal. It seems that Sony no longer manufacturs the earpiece
seperatly and I cannot seem to get a hold of them anywhere. Does anyone have
an extra pair or a left side piece? I'm willing to pay full price for the
piece.

Keith,

I ordered a pair of speakers to use with my MD Walkman on 6th June this year,
and I'm still waiting for them. They've not charged me yet, but they keep
e-mailing me with promises which they break. I don't know if it's their
fault, or their supplier's. I would sugest that you telephone them, and
check that what you want is available from stock.
