===END QUOTE===
If manufacturers added this useful feature, it can come in handy if the deck
is deployed in a school or similar environment for students or others to
listen to MDs on (MDs being the ideal medium for keeping music education,
language-learning and other educational audio material on because it is hard
to damage the discs).

Also, in our church, we use MD as a "cart machine" for backing tracks during
praise and worship and when we are between services; especially when we
fellowship with each other after the service, we sometimes find little
fingers discovering the controls on our MD deck. As a matter of course, we
make sure that all discs are "locked-out" using the write-protect switch to
prevent any problems with over-recording or unwanted editing.

This feature can be implemented by use of a button on the remote control
much like the C-LOCK mode on a VCR (which stops others from operating a VCR
which is doing something like recording your favourite TV show).

An aircheck is used to describe the recording of a radio broadcast in an
uninterrupted fashion (similar to recording a TV show with a VCR). The
practice of recording selected songs off radio )a practice which many of us
did using our "ghetto blasters" during the 80s to grab only those "crown

not best describe an aircheck.

Does anyone know if there are any devices that allow an MD changer or MD
Walkman to be hooked in to newer VW sound systems?

I drive a current model VW Passat, which had the VW Gamma sound unit in (RDS
receiver, full logic tape deck, with support for CD changer). I was always
quite pleased with the sound from it, and the speakers installed as stock (4
front, 4 rear - 2 in each door). When I first bought an MD portable, I used
a cassette adapter, which worked quite well - and I was happy with the
results.

Since, I've had a Sony Minidisc head unit fitted - by VW, and I'm happy
enough with it, the sound is good enough, and it's easy to use. This
supports a CD / MD changer, too. I understand the car is wired up, as
standard, for a CD changer in the boot / trunk - whether this cabling would
be OK for another vendor's changer, I don't know.

However, there are some features from the stock stereo that I miss (GALA -
the automatic adjustment of the volume, as road spead increases / decreases
- stuff like that - I found it very useful), and the styling of the OEM unit
looks considerably better in the car, than the Sony unit I have at present.

So, silly 'though it may sound, I'm considering having the original head
unit put back in, and using a cassette adapter with one of my portables
again.

But in reply to the general question over whether VW discourage owners from
using MD - I'd say they make no particular effort either way - not tangibly
different from any other manufacturer IMO.

to find information on it, think it's a faily new release.

This one comes with a rechargeable Ni-MH battery, or uses 1 AA. My

There's no end search, to record, you play/ff the last track, press
record,
adjust the recording level, enter the syncho recording level, and when
the
unit hears sound it records, REAL NEAT!

Not happy with current mic (it goes hmm), am playing around with

your homemade mic design.

thanks, for asking, nice reel, by the way,

If you really have to play or FF to the last track first before you can
record into open space, then that *is* manual end search, and it's even worse
than Sony's one-button implementation. I would guess that that isn't neces-
sary, and that like other Sharp portables its end search is automatic.

Larry wrote about Mike Myers,

Unless a person has been in outer space with no communications with earth
what so ever since "Wayne's World", "Church Lady", "Coffee Talk" etc., it
is impossible not to know who he is.

It was Dana Carvey who played the Church Lady. Myers's other SNL characters
included Dieter from "Sprockets," Simon (the lonely boy who drew in the bath-
tub), and theater critic Cucumber Jones, as well as Wayne Campbell [opposite
Carvey as Garth Algar] in "Wayne's World" and Linda Richman in "Coffee Talk."
(Actually, he started "Coffee Talk" playing a male host named Paul Baldwin.)

1. Display - capital letters only (uses CD/calculator-like display
rather than dot matrix, probably because the CD headunits use the same face)
but a real shame when you use lower and upper case a lot, doesn't scroll and
you can't get remaining time in a track. (minor gripes really)

It will scroll, but Autoscroll is disabled by default - go through the menu
items till you get to A.SCRL and turn it on. It then scrolls the track or
disc name past once when it changes (then stops on the first 8 characters
to stop it annoying you). Not having remaining time is annoying, but most
of my discs are titled and I'd rather see them than the time.

I think that a portable MD recorder is just fine. You have the wired
remote (which on some units like the Aiwa F70 and 80 are backlit when
used on external power). If you have an Aux on your receive (all the
Aiwa car Receivers that I know of still include them) you are set.

Buy some 80 minute blanks and compile a bunch of songs that you like.
Even of you are going on a long trip, having to change an MD every hour
and 20 minutes doesn't really seem like that much of an inconvenience to
me.

Besides, sooner or later you are going to have to make a pit stop.

Guys, you are supposed to at least make an attempt to tie this stuff in
with MD G. Does anyone know if Chuck Norris owes a mini disc
recorder? I'll bet Mike Myers has one :).

There are so many ways to measure the talent of an individual. My son
is an actor (no you haven't seen him on TV or in any movies, but he has
done summer stock-he's basically a stage actor and teaches theater at a
fancy college prep school).

If large numbers of people find Chuck Norris movies (and his TV show)
entertaining, then while he may technically not be a "good" actor, it
does have the talent to entertain. I have seen him in a lot of movies
that I really enjoyed (even if I didn't walk away learning the meaning
of life from them).

As for Mike Myers. It's not just his comedic acting ability (btw, I
confused Myer's with Dana Carvey-Carvey did church lady, sorry) but his
writing and general creative talent. Myer's has created several
"institutions".

Austin Powers (which by the way I was very disappointed in. I really
didn't see what all of the fuss was about (Give me "Blazing Saddles" any
day) is probably almost as well know as James Bond.

These albums were not available on CD until very recently. I had them all
on vinyl, but lost two of them in a fire. So this was a big deal for me.
I have been trying to one particular song that is on one of them for 20
 years!

That reminds me about MD. People are making a great fuss about CD, MD and
what ever sound quality. When I was in my teens and twenties I had the time
to sit down in my family room and just listen to music.

Sound quality was very important to me then because that's what I was
doing. I usually don't have the luxury of doing that very often. If I get
any free time I usually watch a DVD now a days.

So most of my music listening is done while I am driving. I guess I should
invest more money in my car stereo. I have just had a 1990 Pontiac Am quad
four restored. Up until now I didn't have a car that I felt was worth
putting a good system in.

I really love home theater though. Before I bought a Dolby Pro Logic
receiver (about 18 years ago) I "hot wired" the two rear speakers using a
stereo receiver. Believe it or not, it actually sounds pretty good.

You don't get a front center channel. But the ambiance sound is picked up
in the rear.

If anyone one is not familiar with "hot wiring", you take the positive lead
from the right front speaker and attach it to the positive terminal on the
rear right. The same with the left. Then you attach the right rear
negative to the left rear negative.
