They won't tell you, or so I've heard. A customer has a page in his area at
http://members.aol.com/adamkb that explains how to send plain text mail
with AOL 6.0. It's a two-part procedure, one part needing to be done only
once as setup and the other to be done for every message that to be sent in
 plain text.

Perhaps a simpler way is to avoid AOL's mail client and use their webmail at
http://aolmail.aol.com. From there one can send plain text easily.

MD: Panasonic's first MDLP portable

picture:

News release:
http://www.matsushita.co.jp/corp/news/official.data/data.dir/jn010315-1/jn01
0315-1.html

The SJ-MJ78 will be launched on March 25, supposedly targeted at high school
students and the 20-something group. Open price.

Maximum playback with LP4 is 104 hours (world's longest).
41,54,65-hour playback on rechargeable in SP,LP2,LP4.

Audio section has identical spec to all Panasonic portables since the MR200
(3.5+3.5mW, 2-step S-XBS).

Size is identical to the earlier MJ80 (12.7mm thick). Like the MJ80, it is
possible to attach a hand strap to the MJ78. The MJ78 also has "smart
change" (draws in disc when the lid is closed, and one-touch eject).

It seems that the MJ78 doesn't come with the charging stand - the specs say
you need a separate adaptor in order to use AC power.

MD: My New Portable

2001-03-15 Thread James Jarvie

Greetings to all! I am excited about my new purchase,
and wanted to share with you. I just got a Kenwood
DMC-J7R (blue) for $130US. It was an open box buy
(i.e. someone bought it and then returned it). So far
I love it! I bought it primarily because it has a
front-load which will allow me to use it in the car
through the aux input on my CD head unit. You may
recall that I was looking to run an MD changer through
that, but Richard advised me that it wasn't going to
work.

Anyway, beside the fact that this has the slot-in
loading, and a nice feel/look to it (I like things
simple), it will be a nice change from my MT-15
because I know have a rechargeable LiIon battery and a
remote. Also, my MT-15 (which is about 1/2 year old)
was starting to worry me a bit: the screws were coming
loose, and the unit was making more of a mechanical
noise than I remembered. So using this unit will,
hopefully, prolong the Sharp's life.

If anyone has any info on the Kenwood that (s)he would
like to pass along, please do so.

Hey there!

The J7R was my very first piece of MD equipment.

My sample is very sturdy - works great even after several drops, months of
eating dust, and losing the slot "door". It is also the best-sounding among

Enjoy!

Here's part of a message I sent just after I got my R900 on the sound
quality of the LP modes:

--

Last night I spent a couple of hours checking out the sound quality on my
R900 and comparing it to my R50. To do this, I recorded "The throne room
and end title" from the Star Wars suite digitally to a disc on the R50,
then moved the disc to the R900 and recorded it again using standard
stereo and LP2 modes. Then I listened to all 4 recordings through the
R900 using my Sony NC10 earbuds. (The CD was played through the R900 with
the R900 paused in record mode.)

On a scale of 1-10 with the CD being placed at 10, this is how I would
rank the sound quality of the various recordings:

 Recorded on R50: 9.5
 R900 stereo: 9.8
 R900 LP2: 9.2

I didn't specifically test the LP4 mode in this manner, but I have used
it. I would probably rate it somewhere around 7.6.

I should note that it took very, very careful listening with my eyes
closed and as little outside noise as possible for me to be able to hear
the differences between the 4 versions. I would say that under normal
listening conditions there would be no detectable differences between the
 recordings.

--

As to your question about the R90 vs. R900, my not so humble opinion is that
the R900 is the definite, hands down winner.

Don't look through any official AOL documentation: it's only on Adam Bailey's

by starting at his top page there http://members.aol.com/adamkb and looking

Andrew finally got through:

| My question was ... does LP2 stereo sound better or is it comparable to

I'll say this in general: if the input is already monaural, SP mono is going
to use a higher bitrate than LP2 and can be heard on non-LP playback equip-
ment, so I think the choice is obviously SP mono then. But if the material
is stereo, then you have a choice of retaining the separation in LP2 or los-
ing it in SP mono, and that's up to you. I enjoy stereo separation and think
LP2 sounds good enough for most purposes, so I'd use LP2.

This is totally an apples and oranges comparison. Mono vs. Stereo and
different levels of compression. It's like saying would you rather hear
Vanila Ice on DVD audio, or Pink Floyd as a 96 kbs MP3?

However in general I would far prefer LP2 to standard mono...if it's as good
as they say it is anyway. I have never actually listned to an LP MD.

It's not titanium. Titanium is more expensive to make. Although Panasonic
doesn't say, I would assume that magnesium alloy is used to achieve the
MJ78's size and weight (62g by itself).

It doesn't have titanium written on the face either :-)

MD: 831 mode and edit options?

Hi. I got my 831 in two days! *grin*

Anyway, since I happen to be blind, can someone quickly list the displayed
options as I press things in record-pause? Like, setting fadeout time, or
in play-pause, getting to divide, combine, erase, erase all, etc. with the
edit key? I really just need a list of what comes up and in what order,
since I had a handy sighted person tell me which buttons are which. Cudos
to Sharp for keeping a fair number of buttons on this unit, instead of
religating everything to up/down and enter keys.

Anyway, if someone could briefly list a few things and answer one or two
more questions for me, I'd really appreciate it! Perhaps you should email
me off-list at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks much,

Chris, learning the unit quickly before tomorrow night's Jeff Beck show!
