I think Casio is still there... Actually in Europe I'm sure they're still
there:
1) Every watch-shop has Casio watches.
2) You can find Casio organisers in most office-equipment shops.
3) They make cheap calculators with the same functionality of TI
   calculators. But they're fragil to.

Cheers,

This reminds me of the TEAC and CDC brands in Australia. Before the late
80s, they made good-quality serviceable hi-fi gear with
sound-quality-enhancing features but since then they made crappy downmarket
electronics. Our market started to get flooded with "flashing-lights"
bookshelf systems; rat-s**t ghetto-blasters and cheap CD players that were
prone to many problems.

A similar fate happened to Philips for a while in our market between 1990
and 1993 where Philips killed the Pye label (reserved for low-end equipment)
abd sold cheap and nasty audio equipment for that period. The DCC equipment
and the 900 series of "co-ordinated" components being released in 1993 was
an attempt by Philips to climb out of the cheap sound system image. Other
brands that I have known that have been killed off by the supply of cheap
and nasty equipment include Kriesler; HMV and AWA.

With regards,

Simon Mackay

So there you go. That's about all I know about Casio.

Calculators? I'll take a single HP over ten Casio's any day ;-)

By the way, I did see the new Casio player at Fry's in Palo Alto, CA on
Sunday. It's actually a good looking (and tiny) unit, but I didn't get a
chance to listen to it.

This is more of what I meant than having not heard the brand name in years.
It was also a shock to find they are starting to make audio equipment --
something akin to finding that the brand "Maytag" also makes vacuum
cleaners. Or that "Craftsman" also makes engine parts. You think of
"Maytag" as a brand that specializes in washers/dryers and dishwashers, and
"Craftsman" specializes in tool-making.

On another level, "Casio" is not exactly thought of as high-end. Maybe
they're trying to change that (though it's a little late methinx)

Casio never went out of business, they've been making digital watches,
pocket LCD color TV's, digital cameras, and keyboards as long as I can
remember. At least this is the case in the US. You can't shop for any
of those items without seeing at least one Casio.
If they made any shoddy equipment, it was probably their cheap Wal-Mart
quality digital cameras. I hardly ever see their digital cameras
anymore, but 2 years ago, they were the most plentiful.

Well, they've been going for years now - most of their business is in
watches and calculators. They also make digital cameras of varying quality.
The other products they make tend to be quite low-end budget items from
what I've seen. They make the best calculators - better than Sharp and
miles better than Texas Instruments.

So there you go. That's about all I know about Casio.

Casio makes the coolest watches around; Casio G-shock, as well as
calculators and all the other stuff people have said. It also specialises in
watches with stuff built-in; calculators, altimeters, barometers,
thermometers, compasses, PDAs, even GPS.

Perhaps you need to get out more ;-) Or maybe Casio isn't big where you
live. Which country?
