Re: MD: Sony MDS-JE510
I think can see why the store would have problems returning something that was part of a bundle. They don't know the price of each individual unit in the bundle. at least that is my guess.(J. Coon) Actually, the price is inconsequential. They would have to match the value of my original deck, which was sold separately as well. The appropriate replacement would be the MDS-JE530. | Curiously, the JE510 does not have DEVO status, | which would mean | that Sony would accept the unit back, no questions asked. | You'd think since | they're not willing to recall it, they'd at least give it DEVO status. What's DEVO status - does it mean it's in a band, or just DEVOid of reliability?(John) See above. Re: MD: Sony MDS-JE510
I took my JE510 in for repair (for the turn-on bug) for the second time last week. I spoke to the management staff of my store to try to see if I could swap it out for a JE530, but they said that that would not be possible. I must do this two more times, per the PSP agreement (and I'm an employee, remember!). I'm going to call Sony and talk to one of their techs. The problem I have is that it is part of a bundle, and my friend in Toronto has the portable! My store manager has told me that I could not swap just the deck out. Curiously, the JE510 does not have DEVO status, which would mean that Sony would accept the unit back, no questions asked. You'd think since they're not willing to recall it, they'd at least give it DEVO status. They're such bastards! Had one until it developed the dreaded self turn on sysdrome. After the store couldn't fix it in three tries and about two and a half months of down time, they gave me my money back and I got a 520 instead. DJ DeeKay wrote: Hi! Matthias asked: | Hi! | | Does anyone have this player/recorder ? Which experiences did | you make with this one? | | Greetz, Matthias | Matthias, avoid this deck at all cost!! When it's working OK it's a very good deck, but most (if not all?) 510s ultimately seem to develop the dreaded 'self turn-on bug' where the unit turns on by itself. This is apparently caused by a faulty microswitch design. It can get worse and eventually lead to grinding gears and discs not being ejected. Some 510s also get the 'protected bug' which prevents you from recording on perfectly good discs. My advice is to get the 520, since it doesn't have the problems mentioned above AFAIK. It's also got a more advanced ATRAC (version 4.5) and digital recording level control. Re: MD: Sony MDS-JE510
Hi, I got one and I have had no problems with it up to this date and it is now allmost 2 years old. I didn't have any of the infamous 510 problems such as the turn-on bug and the discs getting stuck in the mechanism. There is only one thing to look for with the 510, check where the unit is made. If it is made in Malaysia just leave it get another one. You have to make sure that it is made in Japan. The model I have is the European model with the coaxial digital input. To my opinion it is a great machine. I haven't heard the 520 or the new 530 though. If money isn't the biggest problem I would suggest a 520 or 530. If money is a problem get a Japanese 510 and you will enjoy this machine for many years. Re: MD: Sony MDS-JE510
There can be problems with this unit, but for $120 I'd buy one and keep it. I liked the one I had and I would have kept it but it was still under warranty. So, when it developed the Turn on Bug, I took it in to be fixed. Each time I took it in it took a long time to get it back and each time it was worse when I got it back than when it went in. If it had been out of warranty, I would have kept it and either fixed it myself or mumbled a lot. Since it was under warranty, they gave me credit for it against the 520 deck. DJ DeeKay wrote: Hmm, I think it's already too late. I got this unit a few days ago from someone who auctioned it at eBay. He had it for over 11 months (not used very often), and he had no problems with it. So do I, I also don't have any until now. Re: MD: Sony MDS-JE510 Disc Eject Problems
Hi. I have one and haven't had that problem. But the original Sony portable recorder (MZ-1) also had a motor driven mechanism and I did have a problem with that unit. It was under warranty at the time and I had to send it back to Sony to have it fixed. That's one point for simplicity. All of the portables today that do not have a clam shell design, have a manual slot in. You have to push the MD in manually and you eject it manually. There is not motor involved. Overall the problem appears to be rare. It isn't often that I read about someone who has a disc stuck. But it happens every once and a while when you get too fancy I suppose. LAS Mark Benjamin wrote: Hi, Just wondering if any of you who own a Sony MDS-JE510, have you ever had a disc stuck inside the deck. I was playing a disc today and went to eject it and it won't come out. I have tried turing the power on and off several times but with no sucess. I will probably have to take it in for service. If any of you have had similar problems please drop the MD List a line - thanks!
