That isn't a criticism in any way ... just a statement.

Dan,

Thanks for letting us know! Jim, Howe, the machinist who made the

mine repaired by Doug at Import Auto Limited in Ames, Iowa (515 296

then machined a new end which slides over the bar. He ground flats in
the bar first, and secured the new tip with six set screws and JB
Weld (inside the collar), then replaced with new Mercedes bushings,
bushing washers, and nut. Handles as new. Since the break was at the
relatively small diameter tip and the repair is on the thick part of
the stabilizer with a good thick machined collar, I think it should
hold up fine. Doug, the shop owner, engineered the fix for his daily
driver 126, and says it's held fine for 7 months and counting. Time
will tell, but I'm very pleased. If you have a car in a similar
condition, I'm guessing Doug would sell you the machined rod end, if
you wanted to attempt cutting the stabilizer yourself, but he says be
aware the stabilizer is harder than anything he's ever cut before,
and is quite a challenge.

Thanks, Loren, for the referral!

Looking at a 190E for what I feel is a too cheap price of $600. The
seller says the vehicle will start and run but usually needs to be
coaxed into doing so. Said something like the injection pump was bad
and that the repair was more than the car is worth?

Fuel pump?

What should I know about this so I go into this with eyes open? Is the
190E engine problematic? What questions should I ask?

Blown head gasket? Saw a couple at auction that blew white smoke,
and were hard to get (and keep) running. IMHO they sold for _way_
too much at that auction. Four-digit prices.

For broken off narrow little posts, I'd think that drilling the centers

I have never had the need to do this but you can try and measure the
temperature of the water in the radiator to confirm that the gauge is not
working. Just because the thermostat is near new does not mean it can not

Hi Marshall,

I talked to the guy I bought it from and he told me he put in a new
thermostat recently. Considering the temp needle barely moves I think it
likely something is wrong with the gauge. I definately had heat more than
the gauge barely registering would give.
When you say The temp gauge WILL read low if there is any resistance in
the lines or
connections that go from the gauge to the sensor you're talking wiring
right? Do you know where the sensor is on the block? Maybe (this would be
so nice) the wire is just disconnected or something.

I have a CB, and use it on some four wheeling trips. CBs suck for caravans,
though - they tend to overload each other if you are too close.

Stick to GMRS or FRS. They're as cheap as CB, maybe cheaper since you don't

Can't tell for sure was what I was trying to get at, but, if this
becomes a reality, I will *make* myself available!

Things to do along the way: There would be no shortage of those, the
problem would be time. For me, I want to have driven to the Arctic
Ocean (ok, within 3 miles of it and taken a tour bus the rest of the
way). I would want to subordinate everything to reaching the
goal...and since there will inevtably be problems along the way, it
might be best to plan the vast majority of the extra stuff for the
way back, so as not to endanger the goal of reaching the Arctic
Ocean.

I like the plan for the way back... also lets us gather a list of things
we want to do. I imagine we will all find some neat little random thing
not mentioned anywhere but on a sign on the side of the road.

Personally, I like historical things...hiking would be neat...taking
in local scenery, etc. I really don't care...I'll pass on Worlds of
Fun/Disneylandish stuff. But I think we should be sure that the side
attractions add to the enjoyment of the experience of the ultimate
goal: Arctic Ocean and back. If we climb rocks, I'll watch...although
sitting atop a tor sounds like fun.

Yeah, the Disneyland kinda stuff we can get locally... no need to drive
10,000 miles for that ;) History stuff works for me. I really like the
history of how places/things developed and how they were (mines,
railroads, towns, etc)

I imagine they have some really cool railroad stuff all along the trip.
Any other railroad buffs out there?

When you say The temp gauge WILL read low if there is any resistance in the lines or

The sensor is about midway back on the driver's side of the head. The

All,

Looking at a 190E for what I feel is a too cheap price of $600. The
seller says the vehicle will start and run but usually needs to be
coaxed into doing so. Said something like the injection pump was bad
and that the repair was more than the car is worth?

I thought it was diesels that had IP's, not gassers? But, never having
owned an MB yet I know next to nothing about them except what I've
read here.

The body appears straight and I can see no immediately apparent rust.
190,000 miles, AT (of course), have not seen interior yet. (Talked to
seller on phone, have seen a few pics)

What should I know about this so I go into this with eyes open? Is the
190E engine problematic? What questions should I ask? Why does he say
IP is bad? Are these like the 116 that traps and hides rust? Where
should I focus looking for rust? You know, etc, etc.

Thanks in advance all

Sort of. Ham radios are far more expensive than FRS, and assuming you don't
install a mobile and use a handheld, the handhelds get extremely hot in your
hand if you have an extended conversation or have it plugged into vehicle
power. Yes, the ham mobiles (and handhelds for that matter) will have longer
range for communications, but that really doesn't come into play for a
caravan of vehicles. And if one car doesn't have a ham licensee in the car,
they're essentially locked out of communications. Easy as the test is, not
all have the time to study then show up for the test.

I suspect the switch just needs adjustment and maybe cleaning. Any advice

As the shift linkage bushing wears, the neutral safety switch becomes
unreliable - cold weather often induces failure. Replacing the shift
lever bushings is the least expensive and only permanent cure for that.

Stick to GMRS or FRS. They're as cheap as CB, maybe cheaper since you don't
have to also buy an antenna (and deal with a monster antenna and installing a
 radio in the car).

FRS audio output is too low, they don't have a mic button on the back
to set it in a mic clip, line-of-sight RF, short car-to-car range
(partly because of the inability to put an antenna outside the car),
can't see the display in the dark without triggering the backlight, and
they have to be fed batteries rather than being wired into the car's
power.

GMRS requires a license.

I'll keep my CB. *smile*

A few years ago, my dad's cousin and her husband drove the Dalton Highway
to Deadhorse, Alaska...some 4,000+ miles from Kansas City in a camper. You
can drive within 3 miles of the Arctic Ocean and from there a bus takes you
to the Ocean...Prudhoe Bay to be exact. Usually about freezing even in the
summer. The Dalton Highway is mostly gravel, hard on cars (particularly
windshields and headlights), etc. Tons of articles on line and picture
galleries.

 A sample: http://gorp.away.com/gorp/activity/byway/ak_dalton.htm

Anyone interested in an Arctic-Q? Not really able to do this any time
soon - maybe this coming summer...or the following summer...but I have been
thinking about it and thought I would throw it out for thoughts, reactions,
ideas, etc. Could be very interesting as a multi-car caravan...we could
carry lots of tools and spare parts between several vehicles in addition to
all the other stuff - spare tires, food, water, clothes for the arctic
blasts that can come at any time, etc.

Easy.

My parents have a 120V electric blower fireplace insert for their wood
fireplace. When the ice storm hit and they were without power for 3
days in the dead of winter, so my dad plugged the Radio Shack power
invertor into the 12V lighter in his Cadillac (with a 350 V8 of
course) and ran an extension cord into the house. Then he plugged the
fireplace insert into the cord. It didn't heat the -entire- 3500 sqft
house, but enough rooms that they could get by.

In Montreal, where power was out for weeks, they parked diesel
locomotives in the downtown streets to serve as generators for the
core buildings.

Subject: [MBZ] 84 190E - Concerns?

Funny, I just *installed* mine a month ago when I picked up my car. It's
part of the basic electronics package -- Valentine hardwire, speaker kit for
cellphone and CB radio. Then comes eurolamps (on the shelf waiting for wiper
washer, trim parts paint).

I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of the Uniden 520 in this
car. Seems the Wilson 1000 is much happier as a permanent trunk mount than
as a magnetic mount on the roof (had no choice on my Audi wagon...)

CBs have saved my butt *many* times, and not just for bear notification.

When I was coming home from college once, I forgot about one toll on the NY
thruway and ate my toll money at McDonalds...

So here I am, on the thruway, literally $.50 short of making it home.

I begged the $.50 on the CB...no more than 5 minutes later I had cash in
hand and was through the tolls with the directions to pay it forward.

It was a great lesson and I've been paying it forward in one way or another
ever since...

That would be 23, or 40. We use ours every time we caravan.
No problem whatsoever except when we try to get by with the
rubber duckie antennae inside the cars. A magnetic-mount
external antenna has cured the problems every time, even if
it's inside on the back seat. These are Uniden 510's, which
are small, a good brand, and relatively inexpensive (used).

C'mon fellas, _good_ used CB's are TOTALLY in keeping with the
cars you are using! Leave the FRS for the Toyondexuses.

on my W124 and I replaced them with 15 AMG flat wheels for winter use. I've

They've got a mix of fair and bad Cooper tires on them...and I'm just a

Mike wondered:

Nor the Land Cruiser...Will this be MBZ specific? What about Benz
powered? Like my dream of an old Willy's Wagoneer with a 300D engine
runnning WVO for example? That may be a possibilty by then.

I'm sure a spattering of non-MBs in the procession will be
acceptable...since I'm pretty sure we'll have nothing to do with MBCA on our
escapade. We have a long time do hammer these things out...and a long time
for some of us to add a MB to our fleet. For example:

Scott,

On my 79, I removed the switch, took it apart and cleaned it. It resides in
a very dirty area on the outside of the transmission. Be very careful when
unplugging the wire harness as the locking tabs are brittle and should not be

It has worked fine for years since cleaning it.

Obviously nobody else seen it neither.
For instance I replied to the Neutral switch thread, but my nickels worth
isn't there.

That is true. You won't normally see your own reply on the list for some

  Noticed this on several occasions:
When I reply to a post, send the reply and afterwards delete the post,
 it
seems my reply does not go to the list.

I use g-mail for other stuff and I've noticed the same thing...but I don't
recall it always being that way. I'm getting a little frustrated with g-mail

The engine has been replaced with a factory crate one

20k miles ago and talked to the owner A/C was replaced

 not too long ago too.

Did you notice what he actually said on the listing he wrote:

The engine problem was fixed under warrenty. It is not a common problem
with MB whatsoever. A german automotive specialist replaced the engine
using parts delievered from MB.

This is not the same as getting a factory rebuilt crate motor. This
description sounds like a local dealer rebuilt the engine itself. NOT
THE SAME as installing a factory rebuilt.
