I've got an '87 but I still want to stick it in the 2.3-16v. 22mpg is getting
old,
and it takes quite a bit of restraint to get that mileage, that car just wants

There could be a reason that nobody bid on it if it was priced too much
in the first place.

Sounds like your tranny is about toast. Those long times to go into
gear do not sound good and usually indicate its worn out. You can try
changing the fluid and filter but i doubt it will help. Also sounds
like you might be in need of new injectors. At around 160, the valve
guides and seals will need to be replaced on that engine. IT will use
alot of oil it they have not been. The fan noise under the dash is
probably the aspirator motor for the inside air sensor.

One thing at a time.

First- change all the fluids and filters (engine and trans).

Then change serpentine belt.

Then flush the brake fluid.. (It's probably black in your car

That's just a starter.. From here on Marshall and the rest of

[MBZ] tranny acting strange

2006-08-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Put the 560 back on the road for a trial run the other day. I drove it
around town and had no problems. Today wife decides to take it to tulsa
and it starts doing wierd things. She said it wouldnt kick into gear
and was at about 4k rpm. Car sat for 30-45 min till I got to where she
was. I checked the fluid and it was fine. I drove it home, shifted
fine at first but woulnt kick into 4th. Put it in neutral then back to
drive and it kicked into 4th. Cruising down the highway all the sudden
it downshifts on its own to 3rd. Would not go back to 4th. Anytime I
had to go up from 2nd to 3rd i had to put it in neutral then drive and
it would go up to 3rd. A few miles from home had to slow down then it
never would go past 2nd. Got home and tranny seemed very hot. Couldnt
hardly even touch the dipstick. Got out my lazer thermometer and read
the temp on the bottom of the pan at about 278 or so. WAY too hot. My
first guess is the filter is plugged up. Beyond that, the tranny is
probably toast. Thoughts?

Yeah, that was a '93 season highlight film. I was surprised to see that
the Evo II wing was either obsolete or (more likely) outlawed by '93.
I was also surprised to see all the curb jumping and sparks flying, but then
I remembered that some F1 drivers (Aryton Senna) used to do the same with
much more fragile cars costing millions of dollars.

Here's a lap filmed last year with an ex-DTM car. I love it
for the soundtrack.

I just assumed the "red stuff" in question was dexcool. It does form a
protective film on coolant passages, which G-05 won't replenish, but eventually
will replace. What I don't like is that it's reputed to turn to glop if you
let it run low with part coolant/part air in the system.

Does the owner's manual ask for dexcool, or give a spec # that you can find on
a dexcool bottle? 20 years ago, Saab just used green stuff, and I quit working
for the Saab indy (the last time) in 1988. Never saw inside a Saab newer than
1985
or so. If it's a special Saab coolant I'd be inclined to keep using it. Toyota
had
a very good long life coolant (red) at least as far back as '93, and I
convinced a
friend to keep it in his '93 Corolla when he finally replaced the factory fill
last year.

That should be set up in advance, not argued after the loss. Here's a
couple of ideas:

1. Stated value coverage.

2. Gap coverage to repay the loan.
I wonder if you could borrow the money from your spouse on an interest only
loan,
so you always owe the purchase price.

Bear with my lack of knowledge on this, but all I know is that my Saab

If your Saab is new enough to use GM DexCool, you can stick with that,
or convert to MbzCool. (kind of like the R12/R134 conversion, I would
not be switching back and forth, pick one and stick with it).

I was at A-Zone yesterday, and they did not, once again, have shelf

in the store before pouring my last gallon of G-05 into the Ford.
I'll be looking around for it locally, perhaps I should have sourced
a couple gallons from Rusty last month when I bought some heavy suspension
stuff. I hate to have stuff UPS'd to me that's only worth a dollar a
pound.

The engine won't wear out for half a million miles or more if
maintained. The transmissions can last that long too. Most end up
broken, NOT worn out! The chassis is usually the limiting factor - they
begin to rust away after 20+ years even if the car never sees snow.

Marshall

Thanks, Marshall. That's good to know about the rust. I'll check the
chassis very thoroughly before buying one. Do you know roughly what the
factory rebuilt engines and manual transmissions are selling for nowadays?
Gerry

I'd guess an engine would be ~$4000 and $1800 for a transmission, but
I'm plucking those numbers out of thin air. There are GOOD used engines
and a few 5 spds around too.

Has anyone had a maple tree drop its various droppings on their automobile
and had serious stains result?

There are rust-colored stains on my light blue paint. I've tried several
cleaners and such and the stains don't want to budge much. I'm wondering if
this is acutally rust somehow being caused by the droppings or if the color
is coincidental.

Would love to know how to get this stuff off my paint so I can say lesson
learned and place a cover over the thing from now forward.

Hi Gerry,
Well, based on what others around '78 go for I believe I'd have a
hard
time getting more than $2000 for it - unless someone with a wad of money
and
limited knowledge came along ;-) Actually, it's in very good condition:

great silver paint, like new tires, recent brakes, complete engine
rebuild
approx 20k ago, replacement tranny last yearAC, leather interior (from a
85
300D), new exhaust, etc. That's the problem - it's worth more to me
than
anyone else. I'd love to find a 2.5 turbo diesel to get some added
power -
I've fallen in love with our '91 300D Turbo and it'd be nice to find
another. The extra cylinder and turbo really makes a huge difference.
More
than I would have guessed.

Anyway, the 240D is an excellent backup car - we're still sorting
the
300D out and it' was nice to have a good driver when we needed to leave
it
at a shop to have window tint installed, the AC blower replaced (the
temps
were 95-100), etc.

It's pretty hard to convince people that a 30 year old Mercedes is
better than a 5 year old Honda selling for 5X's the cost. IMO, I'd take
the
MB every time.

I suspect that given the best modern synthetic lubes, you would
 still
 be
 having
problems with vacuum pump after 200k, syncro, IP, and timing chain
 issues
 within
400k, and possibly head gasket issues in between. If I wanted it to
run
 perfectly
forever I'd probably replace the injectors, delivery valves, and
vac

 at 200k,
and replace all glow plugs when one failed.

Clutch life is largely user dependent. My Plymouth Horizon rusted

 232k with
the original clutch in it, and I occasionally did things like tow a
 2600lb
 boat with
it. Other drivers could have killed the clutch inside 80k without

How about the tag on the back passenger side, whose close-up didn't turn
out very good?

Is that one of the engines from the Alaskan GOA auction?
I believe those were in some kind of snow-cat, not a G.

Not sure, where is it located on these?

That exhaust manifold looks home-made.

Supposed to be a 3.5l, they said it was military engine. Looks like it
was from a G-wagon. It has a #22 head!!! I bought it for the head but
wonder if the engine is good. Do these have the rod bending problems as
well. This euro or whatever version, what sort of hp will it have? I
have a nice SDL that would love to have a screaming fast 603 in it. Hmm

Amiga was one of the leaders -- with decent marketing it could have
taken the graphics industry from Apple --- The first digital video
eding suite I saw ran on an Amiga -- the video toaster(?).

Ah well, Apple has survived, unlike some of the others. Imagine,
multi-user multitasking computers in 1978..They were around,
believe it or not. Probably slower than molassas in January, but alive
-- Sinclair for one, don't remember the others.
