LarryT - I've been using Mobil1 Synthetic ATF in my '90 300D 2.5 for about
80k miles now, and it still shifts smoothly, with no leaks. Changing it
every 30k, including the torque converter, new filter and gasket, of course
every change.

The Mobil 1 made a great improvement in my 300D 2.5. The dealer put it
in when I had a factory refurbished transmission installed. They
recommended it. It shifts much better when cold.

Re: [MBZ] 1979 230 D Electrical Starting Problem

2007-02-18 Thread LarryT
It should start in either P or D - if the neutral start switch is working
properly.

It sounds like poor connections somewhere - at the battery, starter or
ground. Could always be a smaller wire somewhere in the starting circuit
making partial contact.

Start with the obvious - battery cables, then starter cables, grounds, and
on and on.

There's not any real shortcuts - just work thru one possibility at a time -

I hope you have a warm place to work?

Good luck -

Car is a 1979 240D

Symptons: A few days ago, went to start, got a "click click sound", panel
lights went on for a second then went off when ingnition was put to full
right position. I then put to full left, off for a second and tried again
and got the normal responce and car started.

Yesterday, same as above happened after car started fine and I had shut it
down for fuel. I was again able to start the car based on the above, car
had same sysmptoms.

Today went to start her and panel lights went for a second, a click noise
and all went out when it was in the ignition all right position. Battery
is

at 13.08 volts across battery terminals, no signs the alternator is foul.
The radio works when ignition is in the #1 radio position and when
ignition
switch is in the start position I am getting a reading on my fuel gage,
just

no lights on panel and not even a click from the (soleniond on starter???)
car.

Just need some exact paths to take to trouble shoot. Looking at the one
line electrical drawing looks like there is a transmission in park switch.
I

do not see a relay in the starter circuit to go bad. But if it is a bad
starter or coil would this cause the panel lights to not work?

Any help would appreciate it as this is my only driver.

Old diesel fuel can cause many problems despite the fact that the engine

soon as it's been replaced with clean fresh fuel you probably should run
a POWERFUL fuel system cleaner thru the system and possibly even a
lubricity improver or a tank or two of biodiesel B20 to free up all the
moving parts in the injection system.

Noted. I'll throw some Power Service in the tank before I try to start
it and run some Diesel Purge once running - I guess there's really no
point in making the engine run on poorer fuel than necessary, and a new
filter is the first order of business once the glow plugs are working.
I suppose I should dip the tank before starting, too, just to make sure
there is in fact nothing living in there.

Thanks Marshall, and everyone else, too.

Watch for a plugging tank screed, too -- quite likely if there is algae

tank bottom.

The charge light is hooked between the field and the battery. If the
alternator is
not generating current the light supplies field current. If there
is a bad connection to the battery, current will flow backwards
through the light, also lighting it.

In other words, it could be any number of things. A voltmeter
and an ammeter are really required in order to be able to pinpoint
what is truly going on. I'd check the brushes first, the belt
tightness, and the state of the connections between the alternator
and the battery.

Randy, you are actually just the SECOND to come up with the correct answer,
after JW Reames. I did not count Marshall because his correct response was
embedded in a learned and exhaustive dissertation on How to Properly
Start Your Mercedes Diesel, which I found extremely enlightening. I also
yelled "D'OH" when I came to the part about cranking until it starts or the
battery dies, without the use of the fuel pedal.

John R. is more local than you by about 1550 miles (Baltimore vs. Winnipeg)
and therefore more likely to claim his prize, but on my next trip to
Winnipeg I will shout you a cup of Java at Tim Horton's, Fixx, or Second
Cup. (Winnipeg is the ancestral home of my Canadian sig. oth. so we fly up
there several times a year,)
