I don't think the ports are different, but I do not know that for a
fact. The easiest way is to measure them off the car (best if you can
find a set of each not installed!).

I know the left side is different than the right, and the right side
for my W108 is different than the one in the 107 (I have both engines),
but I don't know for sure on the 500.

Likely it will fit, but I wouldn't want to pull the set to find out
they don't!

Re: [MBZ] Biodiesel from animal fats

2007-04-17 Thread Rich Thomas
They said it was not a very large fraction of daily or annual usage, but
it was dealing with a product that was in good supply for faily cheap,
and displacing "food" crops.

Also, tax credits were a substantial element of the cost-effectiveness
of the whole deal. I have sorta mixed feelings about tax aspects, as
that really clouds up the "real" costs of doing something, and
comparative economics. Some argue that the energy independence aspect
offsets lost govt revenue and paying for "wars for oil" (the price of
both keep going up, so neither appears to be too effective, but I
digress...), while others say it is a gift to the all bidness.

Hello Ed

No problem at all. Rusty sends by US Postal Service and the Post Office here
delivers it to me. If I recall
corretly, I have not even been dinged for the $5 fee on it. They just dropped
the box off. Worst case scenario
should be the taxes and $5 fee at the post office.

Now, if you use FedEx, you will get dinged big time for the brokerage fees. I
have been there and done that and
won't again if I can avoid it at all.

Hi Randy,
Just a quick question. Have you had any problems bringing stuff over the
border, with regards to customs, brokers fees, etc., other than just paying
the GST? I'd like to give Rusty some business as I understand he helps keep

There's a turkey biodiesel plant near the Con Agra turkey processing
plant in Carthage Missouri that's been doing just that for a couple of
years. Problem is they miscalculated operating costs ( turns out that
the gvmnt didn't outlaw feeding animal parts back to the animals , Mad
cow disease anyone?? ) so they are having to pay for the waste instead
of getting it for free. Tyson ought to be able to pull it off since they
are in a closed system for by-product processing within their company(
they own their own rendering plants already ).

For a city known for Bar-b-q, I think it's an ingenious marketing ploy to fill

cause problems for Jews and Muslims? What about BioD derived from

What year is your truck? Does it have a 5 speed manny? I believe you
mentioned that it has the Bosch VE IP rather than the rotary type on the 1st
gen Cummins engines which would classify it as a 2nd gen Cummins, no
electronic crap. Regarding the longer rev range, I believe mine redlines at
either 3600 or 3800RPM. It sure is a lot quieter than my neighbor's 2000
3rd gen 24v engine. I heard that the 5.9L Cummins is being phased out and
replaced with a 6.7L model.
BTW, I wasn't referring to driving the truck on the beach at Long Beach
although we did get it stuck in the sand last time out and got pulled out by
some nice Canadians. They were romping around in a VW Acapulco Thing and
came back with their ford PowerChoke 6.0L pickup. We go to the Eagle's Nest
Resort in Ilwaco a few times a year with the travel trailer, and go down to
the beach with the RC's and to let the doggies have a good run.

Re: [MBZ] Biodiesel from animal fats

2007-04-17 Thread Chris Lane

It seems like that woulc be a great idea, except for the gell point of
animal fats being higher than that of plant based fats. Lard, chicken fat,
and tallow are all solid at room temperature and higher. Ghee which is
basicly clarified butter, is also solid at room temperature. Olive oil,
rapeseed, and most other vegetable fats are liquid to much lower
temperatures. This could limit the usefulness of biodiesel made from these
fats to warmer climates/summertime use only. On the other hand, bacon
flavored biodiesel exhaust! Yummy!

[MBZ] Tri-Y headers in a 450sl

2007-04-17 Thread Mathieu J . Cama

Fellow listers,

I have a client with a '76 450sl. In an attempt to improve performance
a bit, we are considering installing the tri-Y headers and downpipes
from a 500slc and fabricating a custom exhaust (or modified 500slc
exhaust) for the remainder. Both are m117 motors and as such I believe
the 500slc headers will bolt right up to the heads. Given they are both
107 cars, there should be no issue with steering box clearance. What I
do not know is if there a size difference with the exhaust ports that
needs to be reconciled? Has anyone BTDT? Anything to be wary of? This
car does not need to pass emissions so those issues are moot. FWIW,
this is a former California spec car.

Thank you in advance.

Then later the 104 version was 3.2 liters and had 217 HP. According to

[MBZ] Issues with the M104 3.0

2007-04-17 Thread Donald Snook
As I understand it, the problems areas with the 104 engines (3.0 or 3.2)
are head gaskets. Is that correct? Is the head gasket problem a matter
of when not if? When it fails does it leak oil externally or does it
leak coolant into the block. Are these the only major problems with the
92 124. Do they have the wiring harness problems? I am seriously
considering buying a 92 124 Coupe and just want to be prepared, so I can
budget.

Back in my college years, when all I had was the stately pace of the
200D, I loved going for a fling on my R75/5. Cures the need for
speed that keeps most people away from the steady pace of a 200D or
240D automatic. Kinda similar to when I lived in Hawaii, Whenever I
had enough heat, I'd go clean the walkin freezer. That always cured
any desire I had to see winter.

Recently I've been driving the SL again, and tonight my wife and
I ended up caravanning home. (She in the 300Dt.) On the nice
flat open spot near home she romped on it. So did I, and I blew
right past her. No matter how pleasant to drive, you can't do
that in the Frankenheap! I love the periodic change of steed.

The difference is just as pronounced in the SD and the Cummins Diesel. The
SD is faster than the old NA 300D/CD's, but that Cummins with it's 325hp and
610Lb/Ft of torque will quickly put your back right into the seat when you
give it a good"ROMP". I don't even drive them, but I understand. When I

Run out of microwaves? ;)

Nope! The problem is in figuring out how to make it fit and look
nice while being very solidly attached, yet doing no harm to
the Becker. FYI, I think the sheet metal is all figured out,
now I have to put connectors in it and wire it all up. Oh,
and provide a substitute for the now-missing dial light.

The profile of the two sheet metal pieces is:

|
|o <--- New dial lamp
-
|__| <- Bolt intertie
| |
   | <- Face plate covers all tape holes
   |
   |

Sheesh, if I could charge for my time I could have _bought_
one of those new Mexicos!

Exactly my sentiments!

I find this site a convenient way to answer such questions. The info
is not complete, but I've yet to find an error.

That is what I thought too. But, I think the coupe versions for 90-93
had the 104 engine but were still called 300CE

We finally had a nice weekend here in Wichita (after getting an inch of

hours (waxing a LWB 126 is a serious effort). I cleaned the tires and
wheels and treated all the vinyl and plastic and detailed the interior.
It looks great. Now, I love my car again! It looks so nice when it is
clean and shiny and perfect. How fickle I am! A week ago I liked the
car, but was out there looking for its replacement. Now, I am in love
again.

Don't get me wrong. I am still selling it. I am just surprised how often
I fall back in love with my car when I spend all day cleaning it up.
The best thing about it, is I really enjoy doing it and at least I got
to enjoy the sun.

she didn't exactly keep it up. I changed the wiper and the fuel

I decided to take it for a trip of about 450 miles

sure is nice to be in the SDL again! On the way back I got in a

a wonderful car! The color combination used on the 1986 S class
