I imagine a good body fender guy could fix this fender but look at the door
to fender interface. Also look at the rubber strip on the fender. It all
looks a bit crooked, don't you think? IMHO, There's a lot more damage than
just the front of the fender.

It is pretty common if there hasn't been any title activity in recent

Yes, I wonder about the risk to the neck were the dog to lunge then be
caught by its muzzle.

And the pinch collar: 1: to me, it's showing the world that you have a
problem you can't train out (yes, I realize they think the same thing when
they see you being pulled around like a kite) 2: my dog actually overcomes
the sensation of the collar and pulls just as hard

When we had our German Shepherd in "puppy kindergarten" at PetsMart in
Santa Fe, the trainer was putting Gentle Leaders on several of the dogs,
but she said it was inappropriate for a German Shepherd. The gal who runs
the local Schutzhund club, when she saw that all hooking the leash to our
dog's normal collar did was build strong neck muscles, recommended a pinch
collar. Made an enormous difference. "Power steering," she called it.

tiny.

That, and it's _far_ easier to let out a bit of air on the roadside than

You know, I know about the gentle leaders and another brand called "halti"
but there's just something about them that seems distasteful - leashing the
dog by the beak. Just a personal thing. My pooch is actually trained to heel
with pretty good precision, it's just that i don't make him do it except for
about 5% of the time. I let him get his exercise and get his craziness out.
But at the same time, I curse him and my knees curse me. I know - doesn't
make sense.

also fastens behind the neck. The leash attaches under the chin so when a
dog starts to pull his head goes down. Just about eliminates pulling and
walking Jax is easy as he almost never pulls anymore. Doesn't hurt him,
or

I
had was I didn't take the time to put it on him the other morning and just
clipped the leash to his normal collar. With the 'Gentle Leader' he would
not have been able to pull so hard. I find I use it more and more after
that.

That's funny, Bill! And I can most definitely relate - my Dobie has
extreme
prey drive, and I make people laugh every time I walk him (10 ft. horse
lead
wrapped around my waist since my arm tendons were chronically sore from
holding leash). The most common quip: "Who's walking who?"

I have a scar from when my previous Dobie charged after a rabbit while I
had
the nylon rope around my hand - I have had to start thinking more like
horse
handlers, who do not have loops of any type in their leads because they
know
that if the animal wants to charge, it and you (hopefully hand and arm
still
attached) will move too.

In my opinion, your picture isn't close enough to tell what's wrong. It
LOOKS like the bottom rear of the left turn/marker has been pushed in a
little, but beyond that, it's hard to tell.

2007-05-06 Thread BillR
An experience such as we have had seems to be what it takes to really
understand. I no longer have a problem with pulling on walks as I have been
using a "Gentle Leader". About 50 cents worth of material that sells for @
$30 bucks at a pet store. It goes around the snout just below the eyes and
also fastens behind the neck. The leash attaches under the chin so when a
dog starts to pull his head goes down. Just about eliminates pulling and
walking Jax is easy as he almost never pulls anymore. Doesn't hurt him, or
interfere with his mouth, though he is not crazy about it. The 'over the
snout' is also a dominance thing. I heartily recommend them. The problem I
had was I didn't take the time to put it on him the other morning and just
clipped the leash to his normal collar. With the 'Gentle Leader' he would
not have been able to pull so hard. I find I use it more and more after
that.

That's funny, Bill! And I can most definitely relate - my Dobie has extreme

holding leash). The most common quip: "Who's walking who?"

I have a scar from when my previous Dobie charged after a rabbit while I had

on, and stayed on for several minutes. The car has done strange
electrical things in the past, and turning it off, then starting it
again has always cured whatever was happening. So, I turned it off and
back on at the first stop. The glow light turned on after I released
the key again. It did the same thing when I stopped for fuel
($2.65/gal) 10 miles or so down the road. The car is operating
normally otherwise. We made a stop 15 miles outside of Lawton to pick
up a passenger - and the glow light still turned on after releasing
the key. We drove into town, and stopped for two hours. When we left,
the light worked normally - on when the key is turned, wait till the
light goes out, then start the engine, and the light stayed off.
It worked normally yesterday.
A week ago a noise that sounds like a vacuum operated CC flap started
somewhere in the dash while the ACC is in AC mode. It sounds like it's
springing open (or closed) every 5 to 6 seconds. I don't find any
change in air coming from the dash or windshield vents with the noise.
Neither changing from normal to equal upper and lower mode, nor
turning on/off the cabin recycle switch stops the noise.
Strange, must be a wagongeist. I've been wondering why Snook wanted to
sell this car is the 300SEL haunted also?

And then wouldn't you know it the blasted antenna gets broken off in the
carwash. I went to the brush car wash because there was a bad buildup under the
filler hole where it'd squirted fuel last spring when the tank vent was
plugged. In fact the carwash didn't completely clean that off either... Shoulda
done it myself anyway.
I was able to stick the stub back into the hole, it still does its job just
fine.

The trick, I think, is to have a car you don't care too much about.

It does have more pressure, but not significantly. You'd be better setting
the tire at 34 psi and letting some air out if you have to. Having more to
start will also let you go longer without the tire going flat (like it was
when you found it today ...).

You are right on the money. I got looking further and found a
jerry-rigged vacuum fitting(the one with the check valve in it). It is
repairable with some seal all.

An 83 will have a piston type pump, not a diaphram (those were pre-76,
I think).

A sudden failure is more likely a broken vacuum line than a bad pump,
although a broken spring on a check valve will cause sudden failure.

I'd check for a big crack in the plastic section of the vacuum line and
for a bad brake booster before changing the pump.

Peter

An 83 will have a piston type pump, not a diaphram (those were pre-76,
I think).

A sudden failure is more likely a broken vacuum line than a bad pump,
although a broken spring on a check valve will cause sudden failure.

I'd check for a big crack in the plastic section of the vacuum line and
for a bad brake booster before changing the pump.

2007-05-06 Thread Rich Thomas
I re-read my web page, and Hans sent along the info on his SD which
appears to have a different VP but maybe his is a different model or
something. You might be able to do the change with the pump on the car
(I did not think of that), but once you are at the stage to do that,
taking it off, cleaning it all up, and putting it back will take only a
little time longer, plus you can do it on the bench.

Re the parts, the diaphragm is just a sheet of rubber with the proper
holes cut, some guy told me once he has fixed them with just rubber
sheet like for gaskets. I have some EPDM rubber roofing material scraps
(tough stuff) that looks an awful lot like what the stuff is on the
diaphragm. I did consider that...

Here's a thought..Has anyone tried to replace the diaphragm by just
removing the front of the pump while it is still on the car? Looks almost
possible from the pics.I will find out when I pull apart the SD.

I'd like to buy the new parts but cannot afford the extra right now and I

I can't keep track of which models are which year, but here is my
writeup of the VP replacement on Brunnhilde, 79 TD (123):

http://www.constructivity.net/rebuilding_the_vacuum_pump.htm

Everything you need to know! Note that I did this once, about a year
later the rubber diaphragm failed again. Not sure why, but the 2nd fix
has held up so far. 2 things make this easier -- clean the engine well,
esp the area around the VP, and remove the power steering pump (which
only takes a few minutes). Then you have clean access to the whole
deal, clean being really important as the engine is open to the oil
reservoir so you don't want trash falling in there. There are allen
head bolts that hold it on, gettting to them by contorting around the
PSP is not fun. Also, make the little jig as shown from some scrap wood
or something as it really helps in reassembly. The second time it was
maybe a 2 hour job, the fan and its little bolts with minimal access
being the most time consuming and finger scraping aspect. Also keep
track of which way everything comes apart and goes together so you get
it right.

I don't know if the VPs are the same on the SD and TD, but if you are
doing this job, taking the time, it makes sense to just get the parts to
make it new (like $40) and be done with it (one hopes).

Not significantly. Weather radio kept going off all night long due to severe
thunderstorms in our county (possible winds up to 70 mph), but at least no
wind-go-round-and-round stuff. Turns out that the peak gusts were only 40

94-95 W140 Diesels were labeled S350. 95 was the last year of the
S-Class diesel. The W140 diesels prior to that were labeled as 300's
even though they all had the 3.5L rodbender engine.

Alas, no long wheel base W140 diesels were sold in this country - at
least not through an MB dealer.

[MBZ] Why were none of you there ....

2007-05-06 Thread BillR

.. With a movie camera?

It was indeed worthy of 'Funniest Home Videos', and now that I am a couple
of days past the actual event I even think it funny. For those who have not
seen Jax, he is now a house dog/horse at 100# plus, who gets much less
exercise than he would like. As we have squirrels and rabbits in the yard I
seldom take him out without a leash. Thursday morning is trash day, and
being the man of the house [I think Jax should take that over.] I needed to
get the trash cans to the curb prior to the 6:50 AM trash pickup. The
problems started the day before when I had gone through the front gate to
the pool area and left the gate open a bit as I was planning to come back
out that way and close it. For some reason I went out the back way and
never did close the gate. Thursday morning I took Jax out, and we headed
for the trash cans that are just inside the gate. Since the door was open
several inches Jax went through the gate just about the time I had my hand
on the handle to pull it open far enough so that I could enter. This would
not have been a problem except for the rabbit in the pool area having its
breakfast. Upon seeing said rabbit my calm house dog/horse became a single
large muscle of rabbit starved action who was nothing but a blur of tail as
he leapt into action. This should not have been a problem for anyone except
for the rabbit. The difficulty came in that I was on the outside of a gate
that opens out, and since I wrap the leash around my wrist [in case of
squirrels when we walk] there was no way to let go of said leash as my arm
was yanked straight out, with the rest of my body being hurled against the
slightly open gate, slamming it closed. I guess I should be happy my face
wasn't involved and the opening was slight enough that only the first half
of my forearm got through before the gate slammed on it. I am also to be
thought fortunate that after the gate slammed on my arm it only traveled
about 5" before it stopped. The abrupt jerk pulled Jax nearly off his feet
and my yell was loud and painful enough to make him forget about the rabbit
and come back to see if his meal ticket was still alive. I think I got off
pretty lucky, only losing a little blood and a relatively thin layer of
skin, with only a slight gash from the middle of my forearm to my elbow.
But why was no one there with a video camera? That could have been my big
moment, and I could have used the $$ for medical care and repairs on my
Benz. Some days I don't think it safe for me to be behind the wheel of a
classic Mercedes.

2007-05-06 Thread Zoltan Finks

We don't need no VW. What were we thinking?

WDBDB22A3EA064286

Test drove a new Rabbit gasser 5 spd manny today. Boy it's peppy, and it's
not even the GTI. Also test drove a tdi jetta. Were drawn in by the niceness
of the new car, but came back to reality a bit.

Now are back in old Mercedes land. So if anyone can run this VIN that'd be
great.

[MBZ] Picked up an 83 300TD needs vacuum pump and other issues

2007-05-06 Thread Mike Canfield
I just picked up an 83 300TD with 298K miles on it. Among some other issues,
it needs a vacuum pump. Was working fine and just quit. No vacuum to
anything. How hard is it to change the pump? What drives it?
I have an 83 300SD I can rob parts fromWill the vacuum pump fit my
TD?
I have become a pro at cleaning out the primary fuel filter as the tank is
VERY rusty. I should get a new tank but for now I can't afford it.
I have put a few hundred miles on her so far and I love it. So much more
power than my 240D had. Overall the car appears to have been very well
maintained by an older gentleman who passed away a few years ago. A car dealer
got it, apparently got tired of messing with plugged fuel filters and swapped
it to a friend of mine for a lawn tractor. I ended up swapping my very cool 68
M37 Army truck for the TD and an 89 Iveco Euro turbo 15-14 truck with only 94K
miles. The wagon is originally from MD and has very little rust. Very solid
around the jacking points.
The tach works when it feels like it and none of the dash lights are working
so I am going to get into that tomorrow if time allows. The suspension and
steering is all in extremely good shape and it handles great. The rear end
sits up very nice.
If anyone has any of these parts in reasonable driving distance from upstate
NY I may be interested...Both front and rear bumpers, palomino third seat
and belts, exhaust system in good shape, FUEL TANK, hood pad and I am sure the
list will go on.
  Thanks all,
 Mike

Technically there were - just not in the USA.
A grey market import came up on eBay 2-3 years ago.

By this time it could easily be a 350 SDL with an earlier
3l motor in it, and they went so far as to re-badge it too.

A 92 class diesel will be the rod bender regardless how the car was badged.
The 300 6 cylinder "non-rod bender" was sold in 86/87.

Dwight, is that 300SDL or 350SDL? 'Thought a '92 SDL would be a 350 -
possible "rod bender."

Wilton,
I wondered about that-don't really know-I didn't call on it. . Could that be
one of the 350 rod benders that was badged as a 300 SDL? Is a 92 a 126 or a
140? All know is what I read in the papers, as Will Rogers said. Would you
like me to call and check it out? I'd be happy to do that.

Yes-in MA that is true too- diesel is about 6-10 cents cheaper than regular
unleaded. Sweet revenge, however short-lived.

I think something must be going on with supply - like more refineries
producing diesel and less gasoline. It's been a long, long time since
diesel was less than regular gas.

Diesel here in Va is 2.63 with reg gas around 2.79
