Re: [MBZ] OT, boot from external drive
well we used it at the RustyQ, then when we got back home all the sudden it wouldnt boot. The DVD drive stopped reading disks all the sudden for the PO and we just never replaced it. So using the restore cd to restore it wouldnt work without the drive. I hooked the external up but it was set to read the disk in its own drive so even though it sould boot from the external, it wouldnt do the restore. Ended up taking the drive out of the other laptop and fitting it to the Toshiba. Got it restored but its doing something wierd. It supposedly restored it to new configuration. I noticed when you opened some windows to change settings, it would be a WIDE window that you drag over and it never seems to end. Also, no text shows up in the windows. So like if you open a box to change something, none of the text shows up on the buttons or tabs. Its the strangest thing I have ever seen. OK Don wrote: And now it won't boot On 6/4/07, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Bondo leariness and Carfax
All the local autotrader magazine ads also go on autotrader.com now. Been that way for a while so you get a wide exposure nationwide. Still, there are certain vehicles which do better on ebay. Ralph Morton wrote: I'm not sure I agree with Mitch's comments - here's why: eBay gives you coverage and exposure to an overwhelmingly large audience, making it far easier to find a potential buyer. Contrast this with the days of Auto Trader (sorry, Kleb!) and other local types of classified selling. Certainly, as with any venue like this, it's always buyer beware, even more so due to the fact that the seller and buyer are rarely withing reasonable distances. Even taking this into consideration, anyone who buys a used car without a PPI is out of their mind, or is otherwise willing to accept whatever faults or flaws come their way. I have purchased a number of cars on eBay, and using the practices above, never felt I got ripped off or that the car was misrepresented. As for feedback, it's a very powerful tool, and should be used carefully. That being said, like any rating system, you have to look at it wholistically, not just as a raw number. If I see someone doesn't have 100% feedback, I go and look at their history. In many cases, it's because they screwed up early in the game (as many budding eBay'ers do) and either burned soeone unintentionally or pissed off a seasoned buyer/seller who took out their wrath on a newbie. However, if I see someone who has 1000 feedbacks with a 98% rating, I will usually pass. Their history usually reveals their lack of business ethics. You gotta look at the big picture... and when dealing with folks on eBay, make it clear that they should contact you with ANY problems or concerns before posting feedback. That's the way it should be. RM ___ You snooze, you lose. Get messages ASAP with AutoCheck in the all-new Yahoo! [MBZ] OT: welders, again
Think this was hashed through recently, but since I was not really in the market I glossed over the thread. I have an old Wheel Horse lawn tractor. The mower deck hangs from the a lift mechanism under the tractor by a bracket that is bolted to the deck. The deck sheet metal must be slightly too thin, because over the years metal fatigue has caused the bolts to pull through the deck, taking a small section of the deck with them. The deck is otherwise sound, and the tractor is otherwise built like a tank and very reliable, so I'm thinking of trying to grind the fatigued area back to solid metal and weld in a patch. I've never done any welding, but I can foresee that having a welder could be very handy. Plus for the cost of a new deck for the mower I could probably come very close to buying a welder. So I am wondering what might be a good welder to start off with. My garage is already equipped with a 240 outlet. I've heard that TIG welders have more flexibility but are harder to learn. Would a wire-feed MIG unit be a good choice? How hard is it to learn from books/video? Allan -- 1983 300D 1966 230

There are a few minor differences I noticed. One of them is the vacuum pump. The 116 has the double piston type, the 126 the single piston. Are these pumps interchangeable? I like to keep mine since it just got rebuilt and I have no idea what the life span of the older double piston type may be. The other thing is the aircleaner. The 116 has no oildrain from the aircleaner to the pan, thus the pan does not have a hole/connection for it. I was thinking of swapping the pans, but questioning if the drain is a must. What if I plug the hole in the aircleaner? The deain on the 126 had no rubber seals for a long time and it never leaked. -- Kaleb C. brake paste; These are copper based and one I use ,UK made and works equally well. mak - Original Message - From: Allan Streib [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, June 04, 2007 10:59 PM Subject: [MBZ] [ SPAM ] brake anti-squeal paste Is this anything like the sunroof lube in that it is quasi-magical and has no equivalent in the 3rd party market? I recently updated the brakes on my 300D (new calipers and pads all around, new rotors in front) but did not use the MB anti-squeal paste. Lo and behold, my brakes are now squealing quite annoyingly. Can I get something locally that will address the issue, or do I need to use the genuine MB paste? [MBZ] Need Help Locating Banjo Fittings!
Howdy! I am installing an EFI system in my 74 911 and have hit a snag. The fuel pump I want to use has a Banjo Bolt on the supply line outlet. My fuel supply line does not have such a fitting on it unfortunately. So, I need to locate what I believe is called Female Banjo Fiting which will fit around a 7/16 banjo bolt and accepting a 5/16 fuel hose with a barb connection. So, the center hole must fit 7/16 and it must have a 5/16 hose barb connection. Or, as an alternative, I can use a 90 degree fitting with a 12x1.5 thread and a hose barb for an ~5/16 hose (or the equiv metric size). Anyone got an old fuel hose laying around with one of the fittings not being used? Any recyclers out there? Any suggestions? Have been searching the net without much luck. Anti-seize, any type, although the Benz stuff is copper base, not aluminum. Apply to rear of pad, and the side of the backing plate (NOT the friction material). Peter
Re: [MBZ] OT: Chicken Boat
You must be to mention Jill's Custom Diesel Injector Cleaner on your web site. Fairly safe, it's buried deeply on the site and her eyes glaze over at the top level! Upholstery expense seems excessive for an 18 footer, how much of that is the convertible top? I'd be tempted to scrub and vinyl paint as much of the upholstery as I could salvage. It's pretty far gone. The top is the least expensive part of it, they do a lot of them. The seats and floor are going to be the big part. -- Jim

Re: [MBZ] OT: welders, again
Wire feed welding setup is great, and there are a few good online tutorials, some with video, for learning it. For a rusty old mower deck, a flux core welder would work great ( the actual MIG welders with shielding gas will give cleaner welds on new or clean material, but for old rusty stuff, the the flux core can generally work better. I've got a gas setup, but I'll pop the flux core wire in when working on rusty old stuff or out in a high wind ) Of course, having it is half the job, need to remember to use it ( the deck on my riding mower gave out about a month ago, i've got some serious restructuring to do on that thing ) Yours sounds alot like mine. If you weld a few pieces of heavier strap across it to give it some structure, then weld a thin plate over that to keep the grass from building up, you'll be in good shape. --Robert Allan Streib wrote: Think this was hashed through recently, but since I was not really in the market I glossed over the thread. Allan

The system is prone to false positives if you consider a clean car a positive. We, the report interpreters, are prone to false negatives because most of us will run away from a car that has repaired damage listed in a report without having the repair evaluated. Re: [MBZ] OT: welders, again
When you look at Mig welders, checkout what it costs to add a spoolgun. You will need it if you ever want to do aluminum. Lincoln has models where adding one costs $200. Unfortunately, it costs more to add a spoolgun to my Miller than I paid for the base unit. *Anyone* can mig weld. -Dave Walton On 6/4/07, Allan Streib [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Think this was hashed through recently, but since I was not really in the market I glossed over the thread. The mounting setups for the old and the new are quite different. Anyone out there with good ideas on how to mount the new unit in the hole? The old one has the spring tabs on the front edge of the radio that just snap into the cutout in the housing. They can't be put onto the new unit as there will not be a cutout spot for them to spring into on the new unit. I am going to have to come up with something else to attach the new unit to the housing. With late model stuff you can't just buy a kit but I doubt there is any point in looking for something at an audio store to fit this old car. Don't want to alter the car to attach the radio if I can help it. Randy

One of the things that jumps out at me is when a car is reported sold at an auction. In that case I'll look at the number of previous title transfers, which is a rough guide to the number of owners. A car with only one or two owners before the auction sale is worth checking out, I've found---it's often one that was well cared for and traded in at the dealer, who then sold it at an auction simply because it was too old or had too many miles on it for their used-car lot. The Harbor Freight TIG is probably the scratch-start DC only unit that my friend has, there is no foot pedal and no AC so you can not weld aluminum... Setting aside the super-cheap stuff for a moment, I have what I would consider an entry level TIG and it set me back $1800, but it has AC with wavebalance, adjustable weld paramaters, etc, etc. It will do up to 160 amps. The TIG is way cool, I can weld my own aluminum intercooler pipes, do fine repairs on exotic metals, etc. However there are a lot of times where I wish I had a MIG as well it is much faster and easier for the day to day stuff. If you dont ever anticipate doing odd projects in exotic metals *and* you dont want to spend a ton of time practicing (TIG is difficult to master) then just get a decent MIG. As far as MIG welders go I would recommend the Lincoln SP135+ or whatever replaced it in the current lineup, key features are 20amp 110v supply and fully adjustable heat range. [MBZ] OT: I think this qualifies
My grandmother has an old Crapsman RER lawnmower. For the last few years the keyswitch wouldn't start the mower, it'd shut it off but not start it. One of my uncles wired up a series of different switches for starting but since the switch has to carry full voltage for starting they don't last long. So this year when yet another switch failed I had a look at the solenoid. Took it out and shook it and could hear the contacts moving around. It turns out the trigger was just dirty. I cleaned it up and put it all back in and it works just fine thus saving the family the price of a new lawnmower. I *think* this qualifies as a Jim Cathy repair -Curt - Be a better Heartthrob. Re: [MBZ] OT: welders, again
Any of them will do stainless. You can use trimix gas or flux core wire. I've not tried stainless flux core wire. Trimix works good. There are 3 different grades of stainless wire commonly available - 308, 309, and 316. The main difference (as I understand it) is the percentage of Chromium. You want to match it as best you can with what you are welding because the amount of heat expansion varies. You want the weld to expand with the metal or else it can crack over time. Mig welders use a spool of wire in the base unit and push it to the welding tip. They are quite picky with Aluminum because it is so soft - it tends to kink inside the machine. For that, you need a spoolgun that places a small spool of wire just behind the tip. You hold the whole assembly as you weld. If you use gas, check the price to refill the different cylinder sizes. Around here, no one rents the cylinders. You buy one from the supplier and exchange for full. You get cost effective around the 80 cu/ft size. Refilling a 20 costs me $21, a 40 costs $25, and an 80 costs me $29. Bigger than that and you pay based on gas volume. You save a lot on the refills with an 80. I also like the 80's because they come with a protective cover over the valve that screws onto the cylinder body. Good idea if you transport them much. -Dave Walton On 6/5/07, Luther [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Which one will do stainless? -- Luther KB5QHUAlma, Ark '87 300SDL (271,xxx mi) needs head '83 300SD (246,645 mi) SOLD! [MBZ] Good luck and bad luck etc.
Yesterday on the way home for lunch (I'm lucky enough to live close to my office) I was almost rear ended by a guy in a big hurry who couldn't wait for me to pull out into traffic. I started and then stopped as there was a little Toyota Echo in the curb lane flying my way. The fellow in the Mercury Sable behind me seemed intent upon pushing me into the Toyota. He did manage to stop however and that was my good luck. Tuesdays I go to a business club lunch across town and the end result today was that some lowlife removed my hood ornament. I think I probably even saw the perpetrator. When I parked there was a young fellow and a girl standing next to the vehicle beside me. I will bet money it was they who took it. I must admit I have been waiting for it to happen ever since I got the car and I am now into my 3rd summer so perhaps I have been lucky in that. However, it is an annoyance and the car just does not look the same from the driver's seat without the star. Time to call Rusty again I guess. Will have to look and see what else I need. Randy

Yes, since that's what goes in. My experience with that was with the oil bath air filter on our '72 220D. The manual said to use refrigeration oil when the weather was really cold, so that's what I did. Thanks guys, it all makes sense now! The compressor is a Zexel DKV-14D, which looks from a quick Google search to be found on a number of other Japanese cars. Should be plentiful in junkyards, I guess. Anybody know if these can be rebuilt, though, or if I could maybe even replace it with ye olde stone-cold-reliable York? Alex Chamberlain '87 300D Turbo '93 Isuzu Trooper '86 Lincoln Mark VII LSC

Might possibly be a euro wing, but more likely the PO installed the closest thing JC Whitney sold. That does look like a real W201 euro grill. The pics are shady, but I think those might be euro lamps too. The paint looks recent, not much wear on the yellow door strikers. Funny he went to all that trouble and didn't get the front bumper/spoiler and rear bumper/skirt and fender flares from the 16v that donated the badges. It would have looked better with the factory side skirts too. Mitch.

Maybe I could have just swapped badges! But I don't know if my SLC had the same emissions equipment to begin with as a US-spec 280E. (Same M110 engine fundamentally, but the Euro higher-compression version.) So even masquerading as a 280E it might not have matched the pictures in the book. This same visual inspection procedure also prevents me from removing the EGR from my 300D. I'll be moving to another county where the rules are different any day now, though. Alex Chamberlain

Be careful with pressure washing the engine bay...I do it every other month since mine leaks a fair amount of oil - that's another project for this car! For really caked on oil deposits around the engine block I use oven cleaner very sparingly. It really breaks up the grime and does not damage anything if sprayed only on the crud. Stay away from anything brass or aluminum and seals. If you use oven cleaner...make sure the engine is very cool and do this in a well ventilated area...hot engine will turn it into a nasty vapor cloud! Another good product is Purple Power Cleaner from Advance Auto - a biodegradable degreaser - works on all sorts of stuff as a general cleaning productI soak down the engine compartment with Purple and let it set for 5 - 10 minutes - again cool engine or it will evaporate on your before it does its thing. You can polish the valve cover and other parts to give it clean finished look! Back To Black tire
