Re: [MBZ] King pin installation
I can't speak for the prevailing practice, but that with which I am familiar in auto machine shops is that king pin bushings are honed to fit the pins. This is a very routine auto machine shop job similar to honing connnecting rod little end bushings to size. And the fit is not critical, although there are specifications. A nice oiled slip fit or no tighter than a light thumb push fit is what you need. This is true of old Ford pickups, big trucks, and old cars that use king pins instead of ball joints. Manufacturers' service manuals usually speak of reaming the bushings to size, which requires a suitable reamer. There's nothing wrong with good reaming, and I like it better than honing, perhaps because I believe deep down the honing leaves gritters in the bushings. But I've known of set after set that were honed. AFAIK they don't crater, and I think I'd know it if they did. They seem to endure as long as the owners will keep them greased. Pins and bushings will last forever, like more than 300,000 miles on an old Ford pickup, if greased regularly. Make that frequently. How I know this ought to be obvious. ___ Tue, 9 Oct 2007 15:33:18 -0700 From: David Bruckmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote Subject: Re: [MBZ] W108 4.5: The nightmare begins King pins kits are about $200 (does both sides) from Rusty. IIRC we took the parts to a small auto machine shop,. He pressed out the old bushings and pressed in the new; fitted the kingpin, and didn't charge us too much. Might pay to call for prices first. Having a 75% tear in my left rotator cuff and a 50% tear in my left place-where-the-bicep-hooks-on-to-the-bone translates into me no crawlie under car. My transmission needed service. Problem, right? I went to a fella that Jim Landenberger and Mr. Jim Friesen recommended, MB Motors. Those guys are great! I knew I was in the right place when he encouraged me to go out and hang out in the shop. Together Louis and I gave my car a very extensive once over. I was pumped. The owner, Bud, came over and talked for a good long time. Good humans. The actual work took about an hour.Iwas there almost two..and the tab was well under $100. I love the warm fuzzy feeling you get when you have a trustworthy, friendly, knowledgeable wrench. The first one looks pretty good. I wouldn't mind having that aux fuel tank in the trunk. I might be a bit concerned about splashing fuel out onto other things in the trunk when filling. Re: [MBZ] Engine Swap?
Would have to move out of town to have enough space for that and my wife is never going to agree to that. My place is within the city limits. It started out as a good sized house with a 3.5 car tandem garage. The heated 4 car garage was built later along with a separate 650SqFt apartment. I lived down the street while it was being built. Right now, the shop has a little Honda Del Sol (AKA Go-Cart) in it that's waiting for an oil change and a tune-up. It has high miles and uses some oil, so I'm going to find out if it needs valve guide seals or if the rings are shot. Re: [MBZ] Engine Swap?
I am on a small city lot with the house at the front and a 2 car garage at the back lane. Nowhere to expand really unless I am prepared to bail. A friend has a good setup a mile or so away. He has a front drive with an attached double garage. He also has a back lane running by and enough back yard that he could put a 3 or 4 car garage at the lane and still have some lawn between the house and garage. Of course his wife, won't even discuss that sort of possibility. Not sure why but she is not nearly as accomodating as my good spouse. The other issue in Winnipeg is relativly high property taxes and so I don't know as though I want to move to something significantly bigger. I'm paying enough tax now. My main issue with moving outside of town is a reluctance to have to deal with water, sewer etc. Esp the water as a lot of the area around here has alkiline water and is not very usable. We also tend to have severe flooding outside of the floodway system built to the south and east of Winnipeg. Therefore a bit risky to go south which is where I would likely want to be. Most properties have either a dike around now or are on a raised bump to stay above traditional flood levels. However, one might still have to abandon the place for a period of time in the spring every few years. That must get old in a hurry. North or west of Winnipeg is better for flood issues as it is higher ground but that sort of thing would add at least a half hour coming and going on my runs to the lake which is east in Ontario. Nothing is ever easy is it? Re: [MBZ] 1975 300D questions
I take them all day long and find more at the PnP I need to bring home. Just depends on where you are and who needs the parts. If you have parts, hit the MBCA 114/115 forum and you will find all sorts of people needing/wanting you to sell them some. Re: [MBZ] 1975 300D questions
YES, that would be great. you will need to have the IP rebuilt, since the BioD has eaten the seals. Probably not a huge deal, but take it to a known BioD mechanic so that the proper parts are installed. I had to take the ED in because we were running to high a percentage and it ate the rubber bits. clay AND your blower works, so right there you have a reason to purchase On 9 Oct 2007, at 12:32, Kevin Kraly wrote: This car popped up on CL this morning for $800. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/car/444268472.html It **SUPPOSEDLY** has an IP leak that's preventing the engine from starting. This may be the W115 I'm looking for. How hard is it to replace the IP if it needs one? I'm thinking that the problem is due to a leak in a line eaten away by the B99 biodiesel and not the IP.
