Re: [MBZ] King pin installation

2007-10-10 Thread Robert Bigham
I can't speak for the prevailing practice, but that with which I am
familiar in auto
machine shops is that king pin bushings are honed to fit the pins.

This is a very routine auto machine shop job similar to honing connnecting
rod
little end bushings to size. And the fit is not critical, although there
are specifications.
A nice oiled slip fit or no tighter than a light thumb push fit is what you
need.

This is true of old Ford pickups, big trucks, and old cars that use king
pins instead of
ball joints.

Manufacturers' service manuals usually speak of reaming the bushings to
size, which
requires a suitable reamer. There's nothing wrong with good reaming, and I
like it
better than honing, perhaps because I believe deep down the honing leaves
gritters
in the bushings. But I've known of set after set that were honed. AFAIK
they don't
crater, and I think I'd know it if they did. They seem to endure as long
as the owners
will keep them greased.

Pins and bushings will last forever, like more than 300,000 miles on an old
Ford
pickup, if greased regularly. Make that frequently. How I know this ought
to be obvious.

Was in NC last weekend for a family event. I noticed that there was a

used car dealer who seemed to be specialized in Mercedes. He had cars

of all eras back to at least the mid '60s on his lot. The place is on

US-74 near Matthews, I think the actual town is Indian Trail, but

might be wrong about that. It's near the Dale Jarrett Ford

 dealership.

Anyone know of this place? We were on the way out of town, running

really behind schedule, and it was Sunday and the place was closed --

 so I did not stop.

Is this a job for a pro? I remember my father doing king pins on a truck of
some sort back when I was a mere lad.
He used a king pin reamer to do something - not sure if it is to make them
fit well or if a worn one develops
ridges sort of like a cylinder does and one has to clean it up to avoid
future troubles. Do the new ones come
oversized to permit that sort of thing? I still have the reamer in my tool
box but have never used it and likely
never will.

Wandering all over the road might mean you need new king pins. This is
 bad

A worn out steering knuckle explains the banging through the steering

Your front subframe mounts are shot. Your steering coupler is shot.
The upper diff mount (in the trunk) is shot.

Center driveline bearing will cause floor-pan vibration, so will bad
u-joints. Nice thing about the u-joints on that driveshaft is that you
can replace them, they are centered with clips.

Open the hood and take a look at the subframe mount on the driver's
side (since you can see it, the right side one is under the battery).
If the large bolt is not in the center of the hold, the mount is gone.
You can also check behind the front wheel to see if any of the rubber
is showing, likely not. Big PITA, but not an undoable job. Fix before
the locator rod on the right side gets broken.

Excessive wheel play is a bad steering coupler -- you can get the clips
and sleeves to rebuild that one, later ones (and all replacements) are
swaged and have to be tossed.

Check the mounting bolts on the steering box -- they come loose and
eventually the box pulls off the frame. Fix as soon as possible.

Plan on a new tie rod, new drag link, and steering damper -- your's are
toast except for the one replaced.

Good luck finding some place who can do a proper front end alignment --
once you take a look you will see what I mean. MAKE SURE the shop that
does it KNOWS that the caster MUST be set with the spring straps on the
subframe, NOT the caster wheel on the upper trunion, or they will screw
the adjuster on the trunion too far and crush the grease seal, causing
 the trunion to fail.

You will need new rubber in the rear suspension -- upper diff mount
(remember, this is a swing axle) is in the trunk under a cover. When
this is bad, as yours is, the arm rides on the frame, transmitting all
sorts of noise. Lots of thumping, banging, excessive jacking, and
lurching on turns. you must lift the car onto jack stands to replace,
support the diff with a floor jack, unbolt the old mount center bolt
and four small screws, install the new one (and may have to lower the
 whole rear axle down).

Also, the bushings in the control arms on both ends are bad, causing
all sorts of road noise, wobbly rear end, and goofy steering. you
mgiht want to plan to do diff mount and all the bushings at one time.

Hi Kevin!
Body is pretty straight as you can see from photos on CL- a few dings and
some rust around the fenders.
Interior is pretty decent though the passenger seat has lost its
springiness, and there are a couple of small tears in the back seat as well
as a larger
one that my daughter's booster seat caused.
No leaks; though the floorboards are rusty and could stand to be bolstered.
No sunroof.
Odometer reads 65000+ (if I remember correctly) but stopped working some
months back and who knows how many times it's passed 00, but engine
sounded
great before it quit starting. Turns over hard with a good battery, but
just won't build up enough pressure to fire those first two injectors.
Heading off to work now 'til late tonight. I can try tomorrow to get
together some photos of the details listed above if you're interested. Saw
that you
had called earlier, call or e-mail again if you still want to come check her
out. Tomorrow (AM or PM) or Friday (not in the evening) might be good
possibilities.
I'll check e-mail when I get home tonight.

Is this a job for a pro? I remember my father doing king pins on a
truck of
some sort back when I was a mere lad.
He used a king pin reamer to do something - not sure if it is to make
them
fit well or if a worn one develops
ridges sort of like a cylinder does and one has to clean it up to avoid
future troubles. Do the new ones come
oversized to permit that sort of thing? I still have the reamer in my
tool
box but have never used it and likely
never will.

Wandering all over the road might mean you need new king pins. This
is
 bad
 (expensive!!) news if true...

A worn out steering knuckle explains the banging through the steering
 column. Not TOO expensive...

you
can replace them, they are centered with clips.

Open the hood and take a look at the subframe mount on the driver's
side (since you can see it, the right side one is under the
battery).
If the large bolt is not in the center of the hold, the mount is
gone.
You can also check behind the front wheel to see if any of the

before
the locator rod on the right side gets broken.

Excessive wheel play is a bad steering coupler -- you can get the
clips

are
swaged and have to be tossed.

Check the mounting bolts on the steering box -- they come loose and
eventually the box pulls off the frame. Fix as soon as possible.

You will need new rubber in the rear suspension -- upper diff mount

When
this is bad, as yours is, the arm rides on the frame, transmitting
all

lurching on turns. you must lift the car onto jack stands to
replace,
support the diff with a floor jack, unbolt the old mount center bolt
and four small screws, install the new one (and may have to lower
the
 whole rear axle down).

I can't speak for the prevailing practice, but that with which I am
familiar in auto
machine shops is that king pin bushings are honed to fit the pins.

This is a very routine auto machine shop job similar to honing
connnecting
rod
little end bushings to size. And the fit is not critical, although
there
are specifications.
A nice oiled slip fit or no tighter than a light thumb push fit is what
you
need.

This is true of old Ford pickups, big trucks, and old cars that use king
pins instead of
ball joints.

Manufacturers' service manuals usually speak of reaming the bushings to
size, which
requires a suitable reamer. There's nothing wrong with good reaming, and
I
like it
better than honing, perhaps because I believe deep down the honing
leaves
gritters
in the bushings. But I've known of set after set that were honed.
AFAIK
they don't
crater, and I think I'd know it if they did. They seem to endure as
long
as the owners
will keep them greased.

Pins and bushings will last forever, like more than 300,000 miles on an
old
Ford
pickup, if greased regularly. Make that frequently. How I know this
ought
to be obvious.

Re: [MBZ] Engine Swap?

2007-10-10 Thread R A Bennell
I am on a small city lot with the house at the front and a 2 car garage at the
back lane. Nowhere to expand really
unless I am prepared to bail. A friend has a good setup a mile or so away. He
has a front drive with an attached
double garage. He also has a back lane running by and enough back yard that he
could put a 3 or 4 car garage at the
lane and still have some lawn between the house and garage. Of course his wife,
won't even discuss that sort of
possibility. Not sure why but she is not nearly as accomodating as my good
spouse. The other issue in Winnipeg is
relativly high property taxes and so I don't know as though I want to move to
something significantly bigger. I'm
paying enough tax now.

My main issue with moving outside of town is a reluctance to have to deal with
water, sewer etc. Esp the water as a
lot of the area around here has alkiline water and is not very usable. We also
tend to have severe flooding outside
of the floodway system built to the south and east of Winnipeg. Therefore a bit
risky to go south which is where I
would likely want to be. Most properties have either a dike around now or are
on a raised bump to stay above
traditional flood levels. However, one might still have to abandon the place
for a period of time in the spring
every few years. That must get old in a hurry. North or west of Winnipeg is
better for flood issues as it is higher
ground but that sort of thing would add at least a half hour coming and going
on my runs to the lake which is east
in Ontario.

Nothing is ever easy is it?

It looks like this but off hand I have no idea what the size is. You will see
here that the range of adjustment is
fairly small. Don't know if it is essentially the same shaft and just different
cutters that make up the different
size ranges. That makes the most sense, I would think.

It looks like this but off hand I have no idea what the size is. You will see
here that the range of adjustment is
fairly small. Don't know if it is essentially the same shaft and just different
cutters that make up the different
size ranges. That makes the most sense, I would think.

Randy,

If it's a king pin reamer then it's adjustable. I just need to know
what the adjustment range is.

Don't know if it would do you any good. I assume there are different
sizes of this sort of thing. This one was
used on a 3 ton GMC of late 50's vintage if I recall correctly. Could
haul it out and let you know what size it

YES, that would be great. you will need to have the IP rebuilt,
since the BioD has eaten the seals. Probably not a huge deal, but
take it to a known BioD mechanic so that the proper parts are
