John, mine is an 05 so not a Buetech either and has 45K on it. I took
it to the dealer as the service advisor and I have become friends.
Said he would change oil for 107.00 and as they had a slow time that
day, would also perform the 5 page Service Sheet Service. All items
came out clean and green. In addition, they replaced a couple of
interior trim pieces which someone had broke.

Reading off the Work Order, states they used M1 0W40 #Q-1-09-0015 and
oil filter # 613-180-00-09 which I believe is that new fleece type
filter.

I have a garage full of M1 15W50 which I am using in my older cars.

Re: [MBZ] MB wiper blade inserts?

2008-10-22 Thread harry watkins
Thanks Wilton, I'm good to go now and will look forward to using inserts in
the future.

Harry

If the ends of one of the C-looking clamps or clips built into the blade
holder are in the short little slots about 1/4 inch from the closed end of
the lower or inner groove, that should be sufficient to counteract the
centrifugal force and keep the blade in place. The short slots are only
about 1/8 inch long. 'May need to crimp or squeeze the C clip inward
toward the rubber just a little to make sure it's well-engaged in the
little

slots.

The upper/outer groove has a small, short ridge inside it also near the
closed end of the blade. This short ridge fits in a notch in the
stainless

strip to hold the strip in place. 'Should be OK with closed end of the
blade inward or outward. The C clip keeps the blade from slinging
outward, and the little ridges in the little notches keep the stainless
strips in place.

It does not surprise me at all that someone else ran 120K miles without an oil
change.

When I was a service Manager at an Oldsmobile/Honda dealer (1996-2001),
customer came in with an new Oldsmobile Aurora. It had 21,000 miles on it. It
was knocking like crazy and was barely running. We tried to change the oil and
it was similar to what you saw. The sludge was hard and had turned into what
looked like asphalt. I asked her when she had changed her oil last and she
said she never had. She said she didn't realize she still had to change the oil
- she thought newer modern cars didn't need it (she really said this). This car
was less one year old. I didn't really want to help her (how dumb do you have
to be) but she was making a warranty claim. So, we tore the engine apart and
had the Oldsmobile zone rep come down and look at it. The bearings were all
toast. Because the parts were so new, it was going to be nearly impossible to
rebuild the engine, and it was cheaper to replace the engine. We got a complete
engine and put it in (it was not covered under warranty and it cost her $6000
parts and labor). The worst part about it was the dealership free oil
changes all you had to pay for was the filter and an environmental charge -
total cost $9.71.

[MBZ] E420 Climate Controls SRS

2008-10-22 Thread Troy Kocher
Listers,

It has been a long time since I've posted, kinda busy on other stuff.
. Question. .

My E420 is have climate controls have stopped working completely. No
fan, no heat, and no cool. It began about a week ago but it seemed
like I could switch on and off a couple times and it would begin
working. . But not this morning. . None of it worked. Additionally
over the last several weeks the SRS light would flash on for a couple
minutes then off. Only about once daily though. . Today it seemed to
be closely tided to my on and off cycling of the climate control
system. . When the CCS was trying to come on the SRS light would be on
. . Don't know if I have two issues or one with two symptoms . .

I also heard some additional noises in the dash this morning. . Wasn't
quite flaps closing and opening. . more like popping. . But I don't
know if I'd call them 'electrical short' arc noises. .

Any ideas??

Thanks

be bio-recycled.

WalMart DOES NOT sell it, you have to buy it at specialty boutique auto
parts suppliers, you need a license to use it that you can get from some
government web site, and you have to pay a special tax on it (which
subsidizes its use by people who could not otherwise afford it). It's
kinda hard to find, but a great product.

Quite some time ago, a fellow oiled a bunch of, IIRC, Garand clips, with

I think the WD-40 problem with the rust prevention test was the WD-40 washed off
whatever oil was on the clip from the factory, making it rust faster than the

LT,

Don't go too rough at all, an open-handed slap or two on the cheek should be
sufficient.

Seriously, I just used a pliers to put a few bite marks on the end of the
shaft, and it was REALLY tough to drive home. You don't need very much
roughness at all, and once you see how tight the access to it is you probably
will be reluctant to attempt to use locktite or anything else.

This is one of those repairs where getting to the offending parts is more
difficult than the actual repair.

Let us know how it turns out

Troy,

Sounds like you may have a flaky OVP relay (over-voltage protection). If your
tachometer is also acting up, then the OVP is for sure the culprit.

Typically it is located behind the battery, and has a clear top over a 10 amp

BUT ADD:

What kind of V-8 is that, anyway? I clicked on the link expecting to
see a Chevy motor. But then in the QA at the bottom the seller says
it's still a disel. I'm so confused.

 Troy,

Sounds like you may have a flaky OVP relay (over-voltage protection). If
your tachometer is also acting up, then the OVP is for sure the culprit.

Typically it is located behind the battery, and has a clear top over a 10 amp
 blade-type fuse.

Maybe they pulled out the MBZ 350 rodbender and dropped in the GM 350
headleaker. Wouldn't that be neat, buy a 1991 MBZ and get a 1981 GM drivetrain?

That is the mysterious spark ignition Diesel. only 3 were made and
none were supposed to be released to the public. See the distributor
cap and the coil. Very exotic. Must be worth millions (at least in

You can make your own by buying a cheap 420SE and then carefully
removing the 420 nameplate and gluing on 300SD and turbo badges on the trunk.

Check out the OVP relay. Perhaps just a good removal and cleaning
will do it, maybe a new blade fuse. Perhaps a resoldering, I've
done that before. Or you could try a new one.

I also heard some additional noises in the dash this morning. . Wasn't

Vent flaps can do that as the car ages. Plastic hinges get

Re: [MBZ] Repair of W124 odometer

2008-10-22 Thread Curt Raymond
Some time ago Andrew sold me an odometer with a slipping gear. I pulled it
apart and spread a little glue around the inside of the slipping part. I let it
dry overnight and now its very tight on the shaft. It was a BEAR to get back
together but I'm reasonably sure it'll work for a long time. I rolled a couple
hundred miles onto it in testing and it worked fine...

LT,

Don't go too rough at all, an open-handed slap or two on the cheek should be
sufficient.

Seriously,
I just used a pliers to put a few bite marks on the end of the shaft,
and it was REALLY tough to drive home.  You don't need very much
roughness at all, and once you see how tight the access to it is you
probably will be reluctant to attempt to use locktite or anything else.

This is one of those repairs where getting to the offending parts is more
difficult than the actual repair.

Let us know how it turns out

Kaleb,

Funny you should mention it, last time I tried to e-mail you individually I
was bounced, but I don't think I ever got around to mentioning it. My mail
is hosted by Google Apps for Domains, and yes this was a month ago so it may
have been fixed already. Just the same, the bounce is postpended if you'd
like to troubleshoot.

For the starter knob I'll probably try Jim's solution over the weekend and
get back to you if I need parts.

Thanks,

Did your wife turn on the key first?

 Tim C. wrote:
Short: how to get the starter knob to move from the 'off' position, aside
from brute force? It is sticky in the cold.

Long: Our w115 240d is technically my wife's, but she has never driven
it (or any diesel) in the cold (45F or so, i.e. cold for North Carolina).
Today she wanted it for some reason. I showed her how to start it and warm
it up, and how to twiddle the blower knob such that the defrost comes on,
and she goes off to drop the kids at school, and I go off to work.

Half an hour later I get a call, 'I can't start the car!' She can't get
the starter knob to pull from the off (all the way in) position. I have her
turn the knob a bit, turn the key, no joy. I believe she really was
pulling as hard as she could, or at least I got an earful when I suggested
she get someone else to try pulling on it. So I offer to come pick her up,
and of course she says coldly 'I'll just walk home.'

Fifteen minutes later I get another call. 'I got it to start, but now
I'm stuck at the grocery store.' This time she lets me go pick her up. We
trade cars, boom, starter knob works for me on the first try. Because of
this - and because my wife has dainty hands and weak thumbs - I don't think
it was a mechanical (interlock or other) issue but just a matter of getting
the force to move the knob off the stop.

I'm sure there's some way to fix this - I can't very well run after my
wife every time she parks, but she does enjoy driving the Benz and it really
was her pick for her car so I'd like to make it work. Is there some
lubrication point for the knob, or do I just need to take it out and try to
get it cleaned off? Or is there a better way?

Anyway, that's my tale of woe for the day, hope you get a chuckle even if
you don't have any suggestions. :)

Mobil 1 Synthair, it's a lot better than a straight nitrogen mix -- it has
some oxygen, CO2, and other exotic gases mixed in. I understand that if I
use the proper amount/weight, along with magnetic turbolizer fill tubes to
align the electrons, it will boost my fuel economy, improve tire life, and

WalMart DOES NOT sell it, you have to buy it at specialty boutique auto
parts suppliers, you need a license to use it that you can get from some
government web site, and you have to pay a special tax on it (which

 LT,

Don't go too rough at all, an open-handed slap or two on the cheek should
 be sufficient.

 Seriously,
I just used a pliers to put a few bite marks on the end of the shaft,
and it was REALLY tough to drive home. You don't need very much
roughness at all, and once you see how tight the access to it is you
probably will be reluctant to attempt to use locktite or anything else.

This is one of those repairs where getting to the offending parts is more
 difficult than the actual repair.

Let us know how it turns out

UT's got the worst shedule they've faced in many years with 4 weeks in
a row of top 10 opponents. I wouldn't be worried about UT stacking up
against each of them individually, but by the end of this stretched
they may be pretty banged up.

Back in the old days, it was the week after OU that was always the
scariest, since both teams would beat the crap out of each other. Now
I'm beginning to worry about back to back OU, Mizzou, Okie State, and
then Texas Tech. I'm assuming Texas doesn't goof off and lose the easy
ones against the Aggies or Baylor...

To answer your question, though, I was going to let the pretenders
bask in their deluded glory without pointing out the fact that the
only team of any consequence Mizzou beat was Kansas last year. If they
were beating up on Kansas in basketball, I might be a little more
impressed, but football? Fugidaboudit.

[MBZ] WD40

2008-10-22 Thread Rich Thomas
I heard or read somewhere (probably here) that WD40 was the 40th
formulation whoever invented it tried to get a water displacer, and it
is basically diesel fuel in a spray can. Anybody know the story of that
stuff? I know that after it dries out in/on whatever it is sprayed
in/on, it leaves a gummy residue (check the top of the spray can where
it drips in there), which is why it is not good as a lube for locks and
such.

The problem is it's not really a lubricant. It is a water displacer
(that's what the WD stands for). It's good for drying out a distributor
on the side of the road.

Isn't that exactly what you did before the Cotton Bowl and then Mizzou stomped
all over the Razorbacks?

Mizzou was clearly outplayed by Texas. We played terrible, they played
exceptionally. No one could have beaten Texas in that game and a lot of teams
could have beaten Mizzou. Texas may just go 14-0. They have a tough schedule
ahead of them, but they are playing VERY WELL. If we have a chance to play
Texas again (in the Big 12 Championship), I guarantee it will be a different
game. It will be at Arrowhead in Kansas City. Texas will be a VERY tough
opponent, but Mizzou can beat them. By the way, Texas still has to beat
Oklahoma State. I wouldn't count out Oklahoma or Ok -State from winning the Big
12 South.

Clearly you weren't paying attention last year. Mizzou also beat Illinois (who
played in a BCS bowl) also Kansas played in the Orange Bowl and was 12-1.
Almost none of the Big 12 teams are cupcakes. Any team that can make it out of
the Big 12 with 12 wins has played a bunch of good teams. We also played Ole
Miss (in Oxford). Playing an SEC team at their house is always difficult. We
also played Texas Tech (which you described as a dangerous game this year).

Re: [MBZ] OT xp v vista

2008-10-22 Thread Loren Faeth
Depends on how you installed things on your xp drive. I like to put
the OS and programs on C then store all data on D or higher. Most
Winders software makes this process intentionally difficult. They
want you to put all the crap on C.

but when I have all software that allows this process, I can wipe c
at any time and install the OS and software, point the software at
its data store, and everything is functional. A better way to to
make each box in essence a smart terminal and store all data on NAS
or on a raid set up on a computer serving as a file server. Map a
network drive to your storage space and point all your data
there. IN this scenario, you can work off different computers in
different rooms or an unleashed laptop and all your data is always
available. So get Wonko to set up a box as a penguin file server and
network controller. Then move your data to the file server, and map
a drive. Point all your software to save files on the file
server. Then eliminate the Wishta bloatware and install your OS of
choice, along with the software you need.

For anyone with a Winders server beyond NT$, you get into the group
policies, find the one to redirect MY documents. Set up a shared
users folder on your raid. In the user profile, you click on the
profiles tab, click on the connect choose the file server drive
where the users folder is, then in the blank, put in the UNC path
to where users is (\\myserver\users\%username%) and add the user
variable, %username% after it. Then copy that path and put it in the
folder redirection policy to redirect my Documents to that
path. Sounds more complicated than it is. What this does is make a
personal folder inside the users folder for each user set up this
way, the next time that user logs in. Then MyDocuments is
redirected to that folder on the server rather than buried inside the
user profile on the C drive. THen when your computer or drive shoots
craps, your data is there and you can access it fm another
computer. Of course, you still have to have a disaster recovery plan
for the storage. RAIDs are good, but not infallable, especially if
not monitored.

Check out the OVP relay. Perhaps just a good removal and cleaning

Where is the OVP relay?

Does the fan come on in AC (max cool) or Defrost setting? If you start in
AC/Defrost and switch to heat does the fan stay on? If so, maybe problem is
thermal sensor (or wire) that delays heat function until motor gets warm.

Re: [MBZ] WD40

2008-10-22 Thread Tom Hargrave
WD40 is a water displacement not a lubricant! The product was developed to
quickly dry out gear in the field. You can spray it on boots, tent fabric
electronics gear with no ill effects the solution will immediately drive
off moisture. At least you could spray it on the older electronics gear, I
don't know about the newer stuff.

It's not diesel fuel in a can - the actual formula is a closely guarded
secret.

WD40 was developed for the military at considerable government expense. This
product is just one of 100's that were developed for the military that we
benefit from. Another that comes to mind right away is Super Glue, which was
developed as an adhesive that could be used to quickly close wounds in a
field hospital. GPS was also developed for the military - so was the
Automatic Transmission.

I heard or read somewhere (probably here) that WD40 was the 40th

is basically diesel fuel in a spray can. Anybody know the story of that
stuff? I know that after it dries out in/on whatever it is sprayed

it drips in there), which is why it is not good as a lube for locks and

This doesn't count trojan horses, naturally. You run weird

What it does leave behind when it evaporates is paraffin --- WD-40 was
the bane (or job security) of typewriter repairmen.

WD-40 is OK to dry out water, loosen up/flush out dirt, etc. but it has
almost no long-term residual effect. It evaporates almost completely.
