Are you real sure about step 7? It has been a while since I did this too but
it seem to remember prying out on the bottom panel of my '81 SD and broke
some stuff on my door panel. Manual page 72-100 only says unscrew screw at
bottom of panel and

Pull door lining in upward direction and remove...then... Note says...
Attention! Panel is hung on and not clipped on.

Re: [MBZ] transmission repair "factory PDF"

2009-01-19 Thread Christopher McCann
Tony,

Thanks for your thoughtful e-mail. It is a major boost of confidence to know
that this can be done "DIY". I'm putting a copy of your e-mail with the rebuild
manual so I remember your suggestions and caveats.

In addition to the factory manual and the ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service
Group) manual, I received today a copy of "Mercedes 722.3/722.4" by Greg
Catanzaro. It is really excellent and in easy to read language.

BTW, did you replace your brake bands? I haven't had the chance to research
this yet, but I have already seen conflicting advice of 1) ALWAYS replace the
bands 2) Only replace if worn out as the replacement bands are nowhere near as
good as the originals.

Thanks!

Chris

Re: [MBZ] OT: Edgar Allen Poe

2009-01-19 Thread Tyler
It sounds terribly dull (not to mention arrogant) to join a club of
people whom are together only because of a high score on an IQ test. I
think this is entirely bogus, since intelligence is such a fleeting
concept that is virtually impossible to define, not alone measure. The
most common use of the word intelligent seems to occur when someone
whom considers themselves intelligent refers to another person who
thinks similar to themselves. A third person, whose ideas are so
advanced as to be unintelligible to the first two, would probably be
labeled stupid by them.

I've taken several IQ tests, and sometimes answered all of the
questions correct, placing me in the highest percentile the tests were
designed to measure. It's very easy for me to solve short abstract
logic problems even if they're fairly complicated, yet I have a short
attention span making it difficult for me to, say understand and solve
a complicated physics problem that takes days or weeks. Other people I
know can do such things very easily, even if they would get a lower IQ
score. Many of the people I would consider most intelligent have minds
that work in such an unusual way, it's highly unlikely that an IQ test
would demonstrate their unique mental abilities accurately. Most
intelligent thought (in my opinion) comes from thinking differently
and creatively to come up with ideas and solutions that would probably
not have been discovered by the type of thought that allows for rapid
and accurate solving of IQ test problems.

I've come to the conclusion that areas of intelligence among people
are very diverse, and IQ measures a narrow, almost meaningless aspect
of it.

You'd be better off looking for a decent condition 603 -- the only

NOT inexpensive.

Gerry, I hadn't realized how far the GMAT scores had been inflated since I took
the test. Before 1995, a 95%ile GMAT score was in the mid 600's. Now it appears
to be about 710.

Fifteen years ago, 710 was a 99%ile score, and in the fall of '93 I got a 790,
or 99.9 %ile. At that time, the top tier accounting PhD programs would not
accept anything below about 700. I should call Illinois and Texas and ask them
what scores they accept now. I bet they'd need to be in the 740-760 range to
maintain the standards they had in the early 1990's.

Got the same one about a year back. Wouldn't want to see how well it held
up day in and day out but should be good for a few transmissions. I think
"regular" price is $199 but often seen at 99 or 119.

Also useful for lifting the front of a small lawn tractor...

Re: [MBZ] W126 Repair Proccedures Needed (PDF Format)

2009-01-19 Thread LWB250
No PDF needed.

1.) Pry black plastic trim out of the handle recess (there is a small slot on
the hinge side of the plastic.)

2.) Remove phillips head screw from inside of bracket.

3.) Slide bracket down onto door pull. You'll expose a large phillips head
screw at the top of the door pull.

4.) Remove screw from door pull and two other screws in the bottom of the arm
rest. Remove arm rest from door.

5.) Remove chrome door strike trim from trailing edge of door.

6.) Remove two very small phillips head screws in side of window frame trim on
trailing edge of door. Remove trim.

7.) With a putty knife or similar tool, pry bottom edge of inner door panel out
to release door panel. Work al the way around the door until the pins are
released.

8.) With door panel loose, carefully lift up and towards the front to unhook
panel from front edge of door and window channel.

9.) After carefully removing the moisture shield (replace if damaged or torn!)
you can see the release lever. Remove clip holding the lock rod and the two
large phillips head screws.

I'm doing this from memory, so if anyone wants to offer corrections, feel free
to do so.

Michelins that go to Dead Sam's are *not* the same as the ones you buy from

membership, so I suspect I am a backslidin' member as you called it. My
friends already think I am a dork, so that would unfortunately solidify
their opinion if I were to start talking about Mensa meetings. Maybe I
could re-join and not bring it up.

(Gerry:) That might be wise. I've met a number of lawyers during my 25
years as a member. Many of them are specialists such as corporate patent
attorneys, but many are in general practice as well. A lot of networking
goes on among members of the same professions.

(Donald:) Plus, the mensa members would probably look down on a member who
was a lawyer instead of a physicist or a professor of an obscure speciality.
Just kidding!

Donald H. Snook

G: One thing I've noticed about Mensans is that they almost never "look
down" on another member (or anyone else), and it's very common that they
don't even know what kind of degrees you have or what you do for a living.
When I was working in Atlanta, several members were under the impression
that I was an MD rather than a humble lab tech. When they found out
otherwise, their attitude didn't change a bit. Members who are sociable and
egalitarian seem to be the most popular, and when they go to meetings or
Mensa social events, they leave their degrees and jobs behind; they're just
members there; ready for a good time.

Note: That's the top "2%" on the tests. When Mensa was first established
in Britain after WW-2 the top 1% was the requirement, but membership
lagged because there just weren't enough people qualified to join. Soon
they lowered it to 2% which it has been since then. Mensa isn't exactly an
exclusive club since about 6 million Americans are eligible to join.

Anyway, welcome aboard if you decide to rejoin. One of the current
advantages of belonging to Mensa (especially for old crippled up dorks like
me) are the dozens of official and unofficial Mensa internet lists; some of
which are hilarious and some of which are very interesting otherwise.

This is because the sample - those taking the GMAT - is not a normally

[MBZ] W126 Repair Proccedures Needed (PDF Format)

2009-01-19 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO

Today, I pulled on the interior handle to get out of my car (Front Drivers
Side) and it appears that the handle is no longer attached to the pivot (?)
via some sort of press-fit pin. (It's there, but I see the hole in the
handle has expanded and the pin almost fell out.), I can get the door to
un-latch from the inside, but it's tricky.

Anyway, I see I've got to replace that chrome handle and some other
associated HW. (As to what, I don't know yet.)

Anyone have the proccedure to remove/replace (and I'm guessing at this) the
door panel, handle, etc, etc. in PDF format?I KNOW the manuals used to
be somewhere on the web, but I can't find them.

Thanks.

was not the same tire as what was available aftermarket, even though
they had exactly the same name. tire shopping can be weird; aside from
everything else, be advised that some tire outlets actually have models

The
OEM tires and the replacement tires were the same name. I suspect you

By the way, I got the tires at Sam's. They do seem to have the best

And the "warranty" is worthless unless you go back to Cheap Sam.

One of the tires I bought from a walmart a couple of years ago
because i got caught in a lake effect blizzard and was desperate,
slipped a belt. last summer.  The tire manager at walmart refused to
warrant the tire.  He had some cockamamie excuse that it was my fault
the tire was a POS. I can't recommend buying tires from wallyland or
Cheap Sams.  I got caught in the warranty trap at sams for
years.  The tires would always fail, so I was stuck going back to
Cheapo Sam.  When I bought my tires from Eurotire, when they were in
business, I never had a failure.  I mostly bought Contis, but had
some Fulda and one set of Frenchy tires.  When I had to go back to US
made tires, at least one out of two will fail before they are worn
out.  I've had the same experience with overpriced Michelins too.  I
have never had a conti fail.  Buying tires is a crapshoot at best.

~40,000 miles on my J**p. shopping around later, i found that the name
"Wrangler" is actually used on several different models, and as bad as
the OEM Wranglers were the Wrangler MT/Rs have proven to be one of the
best tires i've ever used. OEM-spec tires are quite frequently crap; at
least the case used to be that they were sometimes supplied to the auto
mfr for little-to-nothing, with the idea that at replacement time most
customers would just walk in and say "gimme' some more of what was on
it.". sadly, i've read that what was supplied as OEM sometimes truly
was not the same tire as what was available aftermarket, even though
they had exactly the same name. tire shopping can be weird; aside from
everything else, be advised that some tire outlets actually have models
made for them that aren't available elsewhere, so if you have a problem
and need to replace one, replacement can be impossible anywhere else."

The
OEM tires and the replacement tires were the same name.  I suspect you
are correct that the OEM tires (even though they have the same name)
are not made the same as the replacements.

By the way, I got the tires at Sam's.  They do seem to have the best
price/value on name brand tires.

Excellent. Look forward to it.

I received a really good 722.3.4 rebuild manual today. 100 pages, all in
plastic page protectors and very easy to use, conversational language. Tons of
pictures, lots of helpful notes and suggestions. Apparently this trans is far
easier to rebuild than the 722.1.2, at least that's what this manual says.

It may depend on the auto manufacturer. Our 03 Tacoma came with
Bridgestones on it and they lasted over 85,000 miles before they hit the
wear bar. Can't ask for more then that. Are you sure she isn't doing
some of that autocross or drifting on the side? =8-0 If so let me know

Subject: [MBZ] Tires

My mother in law was in town this weekend (everyone made it out alive!)
and I noticed that her tires her completely bald. So, I started doing
some research and spent time trying to find her the best deals on
tires. It gave me something to do and was a relief. But, I am curious
about something. She has a 2008 Suzuki SX4. It's a cute little car
and she

really likes it. The car serves her needs because she wanted a new,
but cheap car, that got good mileage. It is small and she likes it. I
would hate driving it. But, it had Bridgestone Potenza tires on as the
OEM tire. Do the tire manufacturers make a different tire for OEM, than
they sell in the tire shops. The car only had 26,000 miles and the
tires were completely worn. I priced a bunch of tires and found a
replacement Bridgestone Potenza that was very highly rated. The
replacement

tire had a high wear rating (460) and was A rated for temp and
traction. It appears to me that bridgestone must make more than one
Potenza

(with the same letter designation) and one is the cheap version which is
used as OEM and then a replacement that is much better. I always
thought that if you bought the same model that they were the same. But,
the replacement tires (even with the same model designation) were
 different from the originals.

I have Windows 7 on a tablet with 2GB ram, haven't installed any other
MS apps yet though. With I.E. and Open Office Writer open it's using

I have run itno some in-stability issues when setting the swap file
size (I always lock it 2 or 3 time the RAM), and have found that
Firefox runs fine, but Opera croaks after an hour or so of use. 7 does
seem to run faster than Vista on the same box, but I haven't tried to

It was the higher end model with AWD. The tires were 205/60/16.

There are some very intelligent folks on this list too. Two that I know of are
members of Mensa. http://us.mensa.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Join Being a
member of several Mensa lists as well as this list, I've been surprised at how
similar the off-topic discussions are and how difficult it would be to separate
those written by Mensans from those written by members of this list. In fact,
some OT submissions on this list are far more astute than those about the same
topics on the Mensa lists.
Anyone who thinks they would like to take the tests or simply mail in their
transcripts which contain high scores in tests given in high school can click
on the link above which would give you some idea of whether or not your
existing test scores would be sufficient. Mensa has about 50,000 US members
and even more in other countries. There is even a "jobs registry" that's been
recently started since so many people are being layed off. Many businesses
give Mensans first shot at a job.
Good luck,

Re: [MBZ] tranny jack sure makes install easy

2009-01-19 Thread R A Bennell
What sort of tranny jack did you get? I initially had one of the things that
slips into the floor jack but couldn't
use it as I did not have sufficient room under the vehicle. Then I swapped it
for one of the scissor style tranny
jacks. I have used it a couple of times but still had to have some help to
balance the tranny and get it slipped
into place since it was on a 4X4 and the transfer case was still attached. Made
it lean a bit to one side.

Re: [MBZ] Tires

2009-01-19 Thread ernest breakfield

Donald,

first off, there are many models of "Potenzas"; the name has been so
overused by the Marketing wonks that there's no way to know what tire
you're talking about unless you reference the entire name.
in personal experience, i once went through 8 OEM Goodyear Wranglers
in ~40,000 miles on my J**p. shopping around later, i found that the
name "Wrangler" is actually used on several different models, and as bad
as the OEM Wranglers were the Wrangler MT/Rs have proven to be one of
the best tires i've ever used.

OEM-spec tires are quite frequently crap; at least the case used to
be that they were sometimes supplied to the auto mfr for
little-to-nothing, with the idea that at replacement time most customers
would just walk in and say "gimme' some more of what was on it.". sadly,
i've read that what was supplied as OEM sometimes truly was not the same
tire as what was available aftermarket, even though they had exactly the
same name.

tire shopping can be weird; aside from everything else, be advised
that some tire outlets actually have models made for them that aren't
available elsewhere, so if you have a problem and need to replace one,
replacement can be impossible anywhere else.

cheers!

[MBZ] OT Windows 7

2009-01-19 Thread Douglas
I just thought that I would let you all know that I d/l'd the new Windows 7.
Have been using it for a few days, and though it looks real nice I have to say
that it does take a WHOLE LOT of memory. With the browser open and a mail
program the used memory is above 1.2 Gigs of ram. I installed the windows 7
mail program which I think is called Windows Live. It has very nice large font
that makes the mail easy to read though there is no way to select all the old
mail and delete. So far I have to delete each one by pressing the delete key.

I am sending this using Vista and its memory use is just above 1.0 Gigs. So not
alot different.

There's a tradeoff between grip, wear, and rolling resistance. OEM tires usually
do well on rolling resistance and wear. 26,000 miles is unbelievable. The
165/80R13 cheap OEM Goodyear Invictas (treadwear 300) on my Horizon went over
70,000mi, and my mom's 2004 Chevy has over 50,000mi on its 2/3 gone Goodyear
Eagle GA OEM tires.

The SX4 with base drivetrain specs out similar to my 2.4L Achieva. 2745lb,
143hp, even has the same size tires.
26,000 miles would correspond to a treadwear rating well under 200, I would
think. Was it a base car with 195/65R15, or a high end model with sporty tires
on it?

Have they been inflated to 20psi or something?

Re: [MBZ] Gas gauge and temperature gauge jump up, fall back: Comments?

Bob -
I'm guessing that Jim and Craig are right about the grounds but just in case
that doesn't help...I once found a crack in the printed circuit board on the
back of the cluster in my 107 that was doing some similar things. Easy fix,
just solder a piece of wire across the break.

When you get a minute while getting settled with your new HVAC job, give me a

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum leak

2009-01-19 Thread Archer

Gerry asks:
2. Do you have to remove the ignition switch in order to replace the
vacuum switch that shuts off the fuel to the injector pump.

No, I think you can work through the instrument
cluster hole to do this.
