Put your nose to the tailpipe of any '07.5 and newer Cummins (well, not that
close) and you'll smell the difference. . I didn't believe it until I
bought my '07. They say it's supposed to be just as smokeless under load
which is great for those traveling behind it. You can't smoke out

Hogwash. My cummins smokes as much as my powerstroke. Actually, for a while,

Once the truck is going faster than 20 mph I doubt the "clatter"
of the diesel is a significant factor in the overall sound level.

Drive by a pickup truck on the freeway, and you have to
look at the badging to determine it's a diesel. At idle
in the drive-through is a different story. But of course
the ones made in the last few years are infinitely quieter.

2009-08-12 Thread Tyler
I don't think this argument is sound. Sure, all cars will eventually
be crushed and probably replaced but the longer each is on the road
the less resources are used, pollution generated, etc. to replace cars
in a given amount of time.

Also, cars don't actually ever have to be replaced all at once. A car
is just a collection of parts which wear out at different rates and
times- a car can be maintained indefinitely by replacing parts as they
wear out. The car can work great the whole time, but presumably
eventually have none of it's original parts left. People replace cars
because they want to, not because they have to- and it almost never
makes financial sense to do so. Look at taxis in very poor countries
for a good example of this!

A good example of this is my dads old wooden boat. It's about 80 years
old, but only a few percent of the wood will be original once he's
done restoring it.

Sincerely,
Tyler

There are two things that can be conserved in collisions, energy and
momentum.

In an inelastic collision, energy is dissipated as sound, heat, deforming
of parts, so only momentum is conserved.

In elastic collisions, both energy and momentum are conserved.

> I think the term "impulse" might be the rate of change of acceleration

I don't recall what the third derivative is called; it's not used much. I
do recall hearing both terms but don't remember what their definitions
are.

In any event, the quickest way to get a feel for what's going on in the
situation of a moving truck squashing a stopped car against a stopped
truck is to consider the amount of energy to be dissipated as,

  U = 0.5 m v^2,

and the force to bring the truck to a stop as,

  F = ma.

Determining a is the trick, especially if the moving truck is still moving
when it squashes the car solid and starts the stopped truck moving.

If the car exactly stops the truck in the distance it takes to squash the
car flat and the acceleration (deceleration) is constant, then,

a = (Vinitial)^2 /( 2 (Sunsquashed - Ssquashed)),

where, Vinitial= initial velocity of moving truck
Sunsquashed = unsquashed size of car
Ssquashed = squashed size of car.

So, F = m (Vinitial)^2 /( 2 (Sunsquashed - Ssquashed)).

For a 13,227 pound (6000 kilogram) truck going 9.32 mph (15 km/hr) and
stopping in 9.84 feet (3 meters), you have,

F = 6000 x 15 x 15 / 2 * 3 = 225,000 Newtons = 50582 lb.

The amount of energy dissipated is,

U = 0.5 x 6000 x 15 x 15 = 2,700,000 Joules
 = 1,991,417 ft-lb
 = 2559 btu

Re: [MBZ] bye bye Marshall

2009-08-12 Thread Wonko the Sane
After how much fun we made (and still make) of his maintenance suggestions?

The short version is this. I asked him to come to the IowaQ as the guest of
honor, and he said that he couldn't attend due to health issues and would
never again be able to travel anywhere due to the cancer, but said how much
he wished he could join us, and would be here if he physically could.

There was a bit more ... but that is the important stuff.

Even while he was (I am assuming) in hospice, he still wanted to get
together with Benz owners, but his body gave out before his will to get
together did.

His final words to me were: "NEVER by a car from Kaleb."

the situation you describe is somebody who has "tuned" their diesel to
make more noise and smoke more. Why I dont know I guess they think its
cool. Out of the box these diesel trucks these days are very quiet and
dont smoke.

them all over the place...

I'm not sure that's really helping matters for people who'd like to see
passenger car diesels. Those trucks sound like a Freightliner semi tractor off
the line at a stoplight, complete with belching black clouds. So that only
reinforces the image of diesels as noisy, smoky, and slow.

Something sure got squashed there but I have my doubts about it being a
Smart.  Something seemed wrong about the apparently intact wheel that's
visible under front bumper of the red truck.  I did some cursory
research, and apparently the standard Smart wheel is a three bolt wheel,
like this one...

  http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3002/2581279047_b980c3351b.jpg

The crushed car in the photo has a 5 bolt wheel.

The oil filter on a W115 is up front, underneath in a canister.  Huge
PITA to change as you always end up with oil running down your
armpit.  The filter housing is by #1 cylinder underneath the
injection pump.

On the 616 (as opposed to the 615 which is in the W115), the oil
filter housing is on top of the fitting and the filter is removed by
taking the cover off.  I have seen a few with a remote housing, but
only in the W123 chassis, not the W115.  Much nicer, as you don't
have to lie on the ground with oil dripping on you.

You cannot put a 617 out of a W123 into a W115 for the same reason.
Has to be the one installed there, and they are uncommon these days.

Have you heard the ads that Government Motors, formerly known as General
Motors, is running for the Chevy Volt? Claiming 230 MPG. Of course
this assumes that the electricity used to charge the batteries from the
overnight from the wall socket has no cost.

By their logic, with a 40 mile range before it needs to tap the auxilary
gasoline engine, you could in theory drive a one-way commute of 20 miles
every day and have an MPG of "infinity"

And at $40K sticker, the total cost of ownership is not going to be what
people might assume from that 230 MPG claim.

agreed on the trans, and i've been fond of many things i've seen
Advanced Adapters do.

as for the fuel economy, i've never seen the kind of fuel economy in
my XJ that the Libbys got, but i've never seen a Libby in some of the
places our very mildly prepared XJ goes.
if only there was a good diesel option for our XJ, i'd be all over
it if the engine ever went away... but only have 240K miles on the
engine that's in there now, and it shows no sign of giving up anytime
soon. ;-)

They also sold the diesel Grand Cherokee in the USA for a couple of
years (2006-7?), which had a well-regarded M-B engine (the 3.2 liter

My wife had a medical appointment at a local hospital. I drove her there in my
F150 Supercrew. We parked in the
elevated ramp beside the hospital. The truck went under the bar at the entry so
I assumed it would be OK. It was,
but boy we must have been close. I felt like the roof was going to rub the
whole time and every time we went over
any sort of bump, the radio antenna rubbed. I was real happy to get out of
there with the paint on the top intact.

Some time in 1978, I was at home for a few days from Greenland. We lived in

incredulously, "Why not?" "We're too tall," I answered, "The top of the van's
gonna strike the top of the
entrance." "Well, I drove in here a coupla weeks ago," she responded, and
started to move forward. I yelled, "No,
stop!" as I stood in the van's doorway and sighted across the top of the van to
the top of the opening. "Well, it
won't go in there today. It's about 2 inches too high. How many others were
in the van with you?" "Four or
five," she answered, as I stepped out and asked driver behind us to let us back

watching roof clearance, lucky to be early enough to have very light traffic,
lucky to have plenty of parking space

The only big trucks that smoke are either quite old, (1975 or so
and older), broken, or have also been modified.

With 50,000 lbs of cargo, power is nice - but fuel economy is a
big deal.

An over-the-road truck will typically run at least 2500 miles
per week. At 6 mpg and $3.50/gallon that's almost $1500 for fuel
every week. Turn the engine up so it looses 5% (5.7 mpg) and it
will cost the truck about $75 for that little 2500 mile week.
Therefore few owners will choose to waste fuel with smoke.

But not all of them are that smart

Bicycling works a lot better here. I've actually found I can get almost
anywhere in LA faster on a bicycle than in a car, due to the slow
traffic. Plus the weather is great for cycling year round!

I used to like driving, and like cars before I moved here- but now I
can't stand it. I'd rather stay home than drive here. Amazingly, I have
a friend from Athens and one from London- and they both rave about how
courteous the drivers are here, and how light the traffic is.

UPS, FedEx, others in the fleet business have been very reluctant to use

Not in their stock configuration, unless the air filter is plugged. Anything
made since about 1998 is going to make slightly less smoke than a well tuned 617.
Lots of guys buy them, put a 3.5 or 4" straight pipe on them, and chip the
computer. Result: Sounds like a semi tractor, and smokes like one too.

I wonder how many of them have been modified? There are lots of kits for
reprogramming diesel trucks for power.

A client had one a while back that he had modified to pull. They hauled
something out of Chicago - 18000# on a
trailer. He said, with the modifications it would accelerate from 80 mph with a
puff of smoke and he was gone.

He had changed some of the injection system if I recall - bigger injectors and
pump etc from a schoolbus that
apparently had basically the same engine but more power. The pickup truck had
been detuned to make it quieter.

I have a dry bag that I use while paddling in the dragon boat. It has clips
on each side at the top, and the top rolls down and clips together to seal
it. Once there's air trapped in it, and the clips are fastened, it can't
come unrolled and allow moisture to penetrate. They also have smaller zip
lock sealed pouches that can go around the neck for cell phones, ID card,
money or whatever you want to put in there. They zip closed and a flap
velcros over the top to keep the seal in place.

So I am looking for a car for my son to drive and have been looking at
letting him use mine '80 300D, or buying another. I am leaning towards
the
later and my first mercedes was a '80 240D with a manny. Is there a was
to
tell the condition of the clutch and or mileage of the vehicle? As we
all

know the odometer does fail on these.

Also is there a was to check lower ball joints when you go look at a
car?

Sometimes you can see grey market diesel SUVs like Mercedes G-wagens,
