In my lab in graduate school, we had a discharge chamber that had high
voltage power supplies to charge up several (small) high voltage
capacitors before they were dumped in series into the chamber, many times
per second.

The capacitors for the discharge were too small and the power supplies
charged them up too fast to see if the power supplies were working
properly. So, I had a 100 microfarad, 10 kilovolt capacitor (= 5 kJ) that
I used as a load to test out the power supplies. It took the supplies
several seconds to charge up that capacitor, which gave enough time to
observe that all the lights that were supposed to be flashing in a
specific order actually did so.

One evening, something went wrong with one of the power supplies. I
connected the supply up to the big capacitor and ran it and found that the
supply was indeed malfunctioning.

I then took the discharge sticks to discharge the capacitor. These were 1"
diameter plexiglas rods with 1/2" copper electrodes in their ends. Between
the electrodes a pack of resistors were wired to dissipate the energy in a
controlled fashion. At least they were supposed to.

It turns out, unbeknownst to me, that the person who had built the
resistor pack had used ADJUSTABLE wirewound resistors. Those resistors
have a stripe down one side where there is NO insulation on the windings
(to provide a way to adjust the resistance). Also unbeknownst to me, the
malfunctioning power supply had charged the big capacitor up to much more
voltage than I was accustomed to using. When I went to discharge it, the
extra voltage arced across the bare windings of the resistor pack and
discharged the capacitor VERY rapidly. At most milliseconds kind of
rapidly. With a VERY loud BANG! My ears were ringing 2 hours after the
incident. In addition, the parts of the resistors and the connecting wire
(12 gauge stranded) were all over the lab, more than 20 feet away from the
site of the calamity. People came running in from other labs to see if I
was OK.

I called my advisor, told him what happened, and went home, more than a
little shaken.

[MBZ] Chowdah Q

Hi Curt,

Forget sending the check please accept it, with my compliments, as a small
donation for supplies for the ChowdahQ next month. It's not much, but what the
heck.

And... I knew it was a double entendre, btw. I just didn't want Fred to think
that no one noticed his little witticism.

:)

On a more serious note, while looking for ta ta in the urban dictionary,
(honest!) I stumbled on this:

http://www.savethetatas.com/

I wasn't quite sure what to make of it at first, was it serious or tongue
in cheekbut it actually IS a commercial enterprise that donates a portion
of the proceeds to the fight against breast cancer. and does so with a
sense of humor. Hmmm. I am still not sure what to make of it, but it is
certainly a novel approach in my experience to a very serious subject. I am
reminded of the whole Norman Cousins/cancer/Marx Brothers Films story a few
years back.

I personally think that there is not nearly enough laughter in the world. I
try to do my part to correct that. As does Fred, I see.

It's absurd to accuse me of thinking I "know better" than Mercedes to

the business of doing only what is necessary to have a simple reliable

turbo to an engine that doesn't have them- it will work just fine.

Re: [MBZ] waiting for the Tatas

2009-08-27 Thread LWB250
Per the Urban Dictionary:

"A term of derision often uttered by Bugs Bunny when referring to an
interaction with a dopey adversary. It is a mispronunciation of the word
"Moron""

So his supposition was correct.

$50K? I sure hope that was Harvard. You can get a private, tight
teacher/student ratio small university in Iowa for only $35K, with lots of
financial assistance.

(Daughter just got her BA from one of them, and thank God she got the degree
in just three years rather than dragging it out for four.)

oh boy, here we go. I have had quite a few non turbo engines with turbos
put on them come thru locked up from melted pistons. Engine life is
shortened quite a bit, and they do not make near as much power as a
factory turbo motor. Why fool with it when there are plenty of turbo
motors out there?

tyler wrote:

The IP can be tuned to provide sufficient fuel, but metering will be
slightly less accurate, which might mean slightly more smoke or slightly
less power- but not a huge difference.

The piston oil squirters are a good design feature, but they aren't
necessary, and probably don't affect engine life much at all if the
engine is tuned properly to keep EGTs down- they certainly wouldn't
result in "very short" engine life.

The Volvo D24 is a less robust motor than these mercedes motors, but the
design differences between the turbo and non-turbo models are similar-
yet I've know a few people who added a turbo to the non-turbo motors and
experienced no significant problems.

Amen. IF you want a turbo, it is VERY easy to put in a turbo
engine. It will not melt pistons and does have more power!

2009-08-27 Thread tyler
All you need to do is adjust the fuel enrichment and timing to get the
full power of a turbo engine without changing the IP, but it will be
smoky when you first step on the throttle before the turbo builds boost-
otherwise it will work fine. I've owned and seen many turbo diesels
without boost enrichment.

Also, changing the IP for a junkyard one is trivial.

Add the fuel and you don't get enough piston cooling, resulting in
scuffed pistons and excessive bore wear. Over-fuel and you can get
melted pistons, too, but that's rather unlikely in a pre-chamber engine.

Re: [MBZ] 1981 300D to 300D Turbo

2009-08-27 Thread tyler
MB had good reason to add the modifications they did to the turbo
engines, and if I was designing a turbo diesel I would add the same.
That doesn't mean the engine will self destruct or not work correctly
without them! They are good features to have on a diesel engine which
make it run better, but you'll find plenty of reliable and durable turbo
diesel engines without oil squirters or boost enrichment.

It's absurd to accuse me of thinking I "know better" than Mercedes to
think those features aren't absolutely necessary. Mercedes isn't in the
business of doing only what is necessary to have a simple reliable
vehicle. They have a specific purpose, cost, and advantages which both
the Mercedes engineers and I are aware of. If you're designing a new
engine from scratch it's great to add them, but if you're adding a turbo
to an engine that doesn't have them- it will work just fine.

Re: [MBZ] 1981 300D to 300D Turbo

2009-08-27 Thread tyler
We've had this discussion before, but I do not believe that their would
be any significant problems in adding a turbo to a non-turbo block, and
the engine would last just as long.

Peter Frederick wrote:

The rear end ratio is indeed different, as well.

Big problem is that the block is not the same, most especially there
are no oil jets to cool the piston tops. Very short engine life will
result.

However, the engine will exchange complete with no trouble at all.
Swap the diff (and the speedo) and you have a turbo model. If you

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Tika-Marsala coming soon... Tata

2009-08-27 Thread Bill R
I got to tour the main Tata steel plant and truck factory back in the late
1980's. I was there more for observing their work with local villages [they
had "adopted" 125 of them, teaching skills then buying products from them],
so the factory tours were a bit cursory, but it was interesting to see some
of the differences in regulations. The truck frames/drive trains were made
in Jamshedpur, and the body and interior was attached in what was then
Bombay. The driver would pull out of the factory, make a lap around the
track, then take off for Bombay [hundreds of miles away - think @ 200 miles
West of Calcutta to Mumbai] sitting on a wooden bench with no windshield.
Jamshedpur was the ultimate "company town", with the electric supply,
schools, hospitals, streets and everything else being part of the company.
"Greater Jamshedpur" was about 600,000 people, with a great many living
outside the well maintained city proper in surrounding slums. Tata was a
well run company, at least back then.

MB Turboed engines are significantly different from non-turbo (naturally
aspirated) engines. For example, turboed engines have additional oiling
ports that direct oil against underside of pistons for additional cooling,
etc. If you want a 123 with turbo engine, buy one that already has it as
such from the factory, or, if you're parting out the SD, anyway, how 'bout
putting the SD engine in the 123? Will it fit easily? I don't know, but
I'll bet several on the list know very well about it.

Subject: [MBZ] 1981 300D to 300D Turbo

Well, I did appreciate your effort when trying to answer to my panic
attack about the lost key of the 1981 300SD I purchased for my son. Even
thought the key was not lost but simply "missing" as Rusty wrote, I made a
mistake by buying the car at an auction in the first place. I have bought
at auctions before but not so bad. There is too much work to it that I
can't do myself, including the first and second gear that slip and too
much (after all) in the front end.

In any case, my main question here is about the other Benz I already have,
a 1981 W123 300D. In reference to specs and I need to do more research
about this, I am wondering if I could transform it to a 300D Turbo. Isn't
the main difference between the 300D and 300D Turbo or TD the header that
facilitates the turbo, including the EGR valve? Is there any difference in
gear ratio? Could I perhaps re-use the turbo from the 1981 300SD that I am
probably going to part out? Would anyone have suggestions or has anyone
has already done that?

Thank you.

That's how I felt about my 300SD but never said it either. Even though it
had double the miles of my SIL's Durango, it would make it across town,
over the mountains or across the country with better reliability, a higher
level of comfort and, IMO, way more style. The SD would be the only one
