Re: [MBZ] Bel Air vs Malibu and crumple zones
Well according to that bit of crap the insurance companies and the highway mob are solely responsible for advancing automotive safety in the last 50 years. And here is MB and other manufacturers claiming that they developed safety systems, tsk tsk tsk. What did I read in another post, only a couple of months ago Texas decided that seat belts safe lives. Re: [MBZ] battery drain 1985 300TD
There are some real stinkers out there, but with any luck it'll be easy to locate. The antenna is a nice one because it's easily unplugged. Well, maybe not on a TD, wagons are weird in a lot of ways. There's really only one fuse that's powered with the car off, the fuse box game is not very productive. Definitely do it at the battery. That'll isolate _everything_, such as the (unfused) alternator which can be a culprit. If nothing's drawing power and it still goes flat, then it's the battery. But beware of intermittent leaks, they could trick you, and they can be somewhat hard to find. Re: [MBZ] Bel Air vs Malibu and crumple zones
When I moved to Texas in 99 the legislature had just passed a law that said the driver could not be drinking and driving. Made it kind of hard to measure distances then on your travels (Thass about a 3 beer trip) Then the next year they banned the passengers from drinking too. Then sometime later I think the seatbelt law was instituted, then a law that said you couldn't have those things surrounding your license plates (which was done to give cops an excuse to pull you over just because) and that got rescinded the next year because the voters actually howled in outrage. Now if they could just get the guest workers and their extended families to learn about drivers' licenses, insurance, the actual process of driving, using seatbelts (It's a cultural thing), and not putting 15 people in a vehicle, that might make things even better. --R Hendrik Fay wrote: Well according to that bit of crap the insurance companies and the highway mob are solely responsible for advancing automotive safety in the last 50 years. I need new tires for my 300D. Seems I recall from a prior thread that H rated tires are actually correct. The sticker in the door frame seems to indicate an S rating is adequate. TireRack's web site is recommending a Summitomo HTR H4 (an H rated all-season tire) at $51 each, or a Summitomo HTR 200 (an H rated summer tire). Not to start a long debate, but does anyone have any other recommendations? Not sure where your 300 per year morbidity rate come from. I'll assume its true. So what is the cost of all the death, damage and suffering by those who are not apprehended? Is it good if they are trained that if they run, they will not be pursed. Do you spank a child who runs into the street if they don't get hit by a car? I did, right than, right now! 300/year is less that 1 per year, a tragic loss if you or your loved one is lost. It does pale in the light of the bigger number of 43,000 annual motor vehicle deaths as quoted here; http :// www . soyouwanna .com/site/ toptens /accidents/ accidentsfull . html -- Peter T. I fear that the ($175) Electric Clutch is fubar in my Huskvarna lawn tractor. It will engage when cold and stay engaged for an hour whilst I cut my lawn. Can you get close enough with the hose from a can of air-duster to cool it off by inverting the can and blowing the really cold liquid onto it? I think you can buy beer at most grocery and convenience stores now, so you should not have a big problem keeping up with the process. I have never failed to get beer at either kind of place. Re: [MBZ] battery drain 1985 300TD
Jim, I must have inadvertently deleted your earlier note explaining how to disconnect the battery and test each fused circuit. Since I am electronically challenged, I could easily screw this up if I relied on memory rather than your lucid instructions. Would you be kind enough to resend the explanation? TIA, Andrew On Mon, Sep 28, 2009 at 9:44 AM, Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net wrote: There are some real stinkers out there, but with any luck it'll be easy to locate. Re: [MBZ] Proper Speed rating for tires for a W123
From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu I need new tires for my 300D. I'm not shopping for snow tires now, but will get them later in the fall. Marshall said he had good service from Yokohama. I've had no problem with them on the 300D but then I only drive locally on good roads and in Florida weather. If we end these chases, the lives we save (or about 1/5 of them anyway) may be the cops' . a duty sargent will often call of a pusuit using third person judgement. I wouldn't second guess him either. I would, as did the author of the opinion piece I linked. How in the world would he know, listening to the chase on the radio, when it gets out of hand? The only one in a position to know is the chaser, but he's to busy chasing (and fueled by adrenalin) to think about it. Many cops do, of their own volition, break off a chase when the fleeing subject's actions appear to be dangerous. Many others don't, and then when the dash cam tapes are released after a fatality, we look at them with the benefit of hindsight and think this was nuts, no traffic ticket could be worth that. BTW, when making my initial reply, I failed to catch the part about the car doing the T-bone traveling at 80mph. Due to the velocity squared factor, that car at 80mph probably had significantly more kinetic energy than the van that hit the W124 at 60mph. Have long 1/2 breaker bar handy. The Taiwan-made long one from horrible fright is a good tool. Wobble extensions help. Make sure the hex sockets are very clean. Spray 2 big SHCSs with PB Blaster the day before. Up on ramps with one person under and one on top helps. More room to swing the breaker bar from the top. Re: [MBZ] Proper Speed rating for tires for a W123
I would not put on a Jokohama tire if it was given to me along with a sack of money. Those are killer tires, as in they can kill you. Tread unwraps on new tires at 70 MPH and does serious damge to your car. In case you don't catch the subtlety of my post, you can call me and I'll tell you what I really think of jokohama. I've had no problem with them on the 300D but then I only drive locally on good roads and in Florida weather. Re: [MBZ] Proper Speed rating for tires for a W123
I'm not sure how fast you want to go, but I have Goodyear Regatta 2 tires on my 240D (and our Buick), and I can attest to the fact that they don't blow out at 90+ mph (in Oklahoma, heading down to an OkieQ). Plus, they go really good on snow and glare ice. Unfortunately, I think they have been replaced by something else -- same tire, new name, higher costs. Integra, if memory serves me. The 300E has top of the line Goodyear Assurance. Big bucks (approaching $100 a tire) but it turns a 2 wheel drive into a 4 wheel drive on snow/ice. And this is my sucky-weather driver. you got your 240D to go over 90 mph? how? did you sneak an OM603 into it? Re: [MBZ] battery drain 1985 300TD
I must have inadvertently deleted your earlier note explaining how to disconnect the battery and test each fused circuit. Since I am That wasn't me. But basically I recommend that you unhook the negative ground terminal from the battery and get out an ammeter. Pinch the positive lead of the ammeter to the battery clamp and then push the clamp against the negative post. Put the positive lead of the meter against the post, then pull the clamp/lead away from the post, leaving any/all current to go through the meter. (The little dance I just described ensures that startup surges do not go through the meter, which if it's sensitive may react badly to that. As in, blow the $10 fuse in a Fluke, for example.) Then you run around the car pulling fuses, plugs, bulbs, etc., and repeat the measurement until you find something that makes a difference. Wash, rinse, repeat. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
