Re: [MBZ] Ed's new ride, was 240D Transmission issue, now wheelbearings
They were probably to be repacked at each E service. I put over 230K on my first SDL, and never popped off a hubcap to look at the grease. That introduces dirt anyway. It had over 400k on it when it went to okieacres rest home. The only times i have seen wheel bearing problems is when the OE grease was replaced with white lithium crap. It gets hard, then there is no grease. then the bearing craps out. If you use the specified grease, or moly grease, and adjust them reasonably close to spec, they run a LONG time. I have had to replace rear axle bearings. The right one on each 124 wagon, and both on my 66 110.110.10 On Sat, Apr 10, 2010 at 6:08 AM, Tim C. bb...@crone.us wrote: You should also do bearings I believe, if you don't have maintenance history. Dunno about 124 and 126 but on a 123 if they're noisy you need NEW bearings. Repacking them will help to prevent needing new ones. My 201 never did get noisy before the bearings catastrophically failed. Yea, I know they do, but the pattern of the leather is different, as in, it has a slightly darker shade around the edges, and the middle is usually lighter. Re: [MBZ] 140 2 tone seats?
You probably know a lot more about W140s than I do, but those rims look like the style I've only seen on Euro W140s, along with the front turn signals. I know the W126 had a different seat pattern than on the cars here, so perhaps there are slight variations between US and Euro S140s too? I know some of the leather on 600s was also available as an option here in Canada on the 500s, as I've seen a 500 with a full 600 interior, alcaltera roof lining, and stitched leather dash. Personally, I never cared for the two tone leather on the 600s. Can't remember, was it standard on the early, or later models? I know the early models had a bit more power too. [MBZ] OT Blue Angels
The Blue Angels are in town (Charleston) for shows this weekend, and were practicing today and yesterday. I was driving by the airport this afternoon and their C-130 took off and made several passes over the flight zone, I guess to check things out. I was headed over to a house that sits on the harbor and looks out where they will put on the show. As I was pulling into the driveway the C-130 made a VERY low pass at about a 30deg right bank over the house, probably not more than 200ft high if that. I didn't look quickly enough to see the pilot, but I'm sure I could have recognized him/her. OK that was cool. I got to the house, and in a few minutes here they came. They practiced for about an hour, made several low passes over the house (individual aircraft as well as formations of 4 and 6) headed out into and from the harbor as they did their thing. One coming over headed to the harbor lit reheat and popped smoke just over the house WHAM!!! at maybe 2-300ft and started pulling up into a vertical rolling climb, while the other 3 were coming from the other compass points. OH WOW!!! I so wanted to be in one of those planes...I could have introduced myself to the pilots though, they were just right there... Anyway, headed back to watch a show tomorrow, should be awesome. We were walking on the beach at Kailua one day, and all the sudden the Thunderbirds were flashing over us, from inland over the beach and then over water. They proceeded to practice the whole airshow, just for us. The airshow was the next day at Hickam. It is an awesome thing. (in the true sense of the word) Some of their passes were low and slow enough we could see them, and I am sure they saw my jaw laying on the sand and the drool running out of my mouth! They were really close to the Marine Corps Air Station, and I am sure that was not an oversight by the air force brass. A lot of our friends were USMC pilots and brass. But the show was spectacular! When they hit the afterburner, it is spectacular! This winter we have been watching some of the big cargo planes fly over, and sometimes they are really low. I am sure Rich had a great show! That's two on that car in six months, and a couple weeks ago my mother was complaining about noises from the front on her car, and sure enough it was the sway bar mount. What is it with these things? [MBZ] The E420. Again.
Well, things have slowed down to a mild roar here, income taxes are mostly done (waiting for our accountant who filed for an extension), the weather has warmed up, and I had today off. So, with all of that and the possibility of a move coming up, I thought I'd get back to work on the '94 E420 I bought from Kaleb. Having with great difficulty, but successfully, removed the power steering pump, I started to work on that problem. Since it has had Mobil 1 ATF in it and since things are hard to get to with the power steering pump in, now is the best time to replace the hoses between the pump and the power steering box and that is the right thing to do. I previously got the hoses from Rusty so they are on hand. I went back to Steve Nervig's index for the W124 CD files I got from John Robbins and looked for inspiration. The best information I could see was to remove the exhaust crossover pipe that connects to the left cylinder bank and then remove the heat shield between the left manifold and the steering box. I disconnected the right end of the crossover pipe and then proceeded to scope out the left end. I discovered that, not only are the pipe to manifold bolts tight, there are nuts on the top ends of the bolts. I have attached some pictures of the situation. Picture 1 (E420.left.exh.manifold.conn.jpg) shows from the bottom the flange and two bolts that join the left end of the crossover pipe to the left manifold. Picture 2 (E420.PS.Box.Hi.Press.Conn.jpg), also from the bottom, shows the banjo fitting that attaches the high pressure line to the steering box. This is what needs to come off (and go back in with new crush washers!) to replace the high pressure line. Picture 3 (E420.PS.Box+Heat.Shield.jpg), shows the view a little behind Picture 2 of the power steering box and heat shield. Picture 4 (E420.Heat.Shield.Front.Bolt.jpg), from the top, shows the bolt that holds the front end of the heat shield on. It's REAL EASY to get to. Picture 5 (E420.Heat.Shield.Rear.Bolts.jpg), also from the top, shows the two bolts that hold the rear end of the heat shield on. Actually, I'm not sure what is there. They don't really look like nuts on bolts. In addition, finding the other ends of those two fasteners seems like quite a challenge itself. As I told Shirley, This car is impossible! Like Loren, I'm crying, Uncle! I'm going to put the car back together without replacing the hoses (which I paid a pretty penny for and eventhough that's the right thing to do). Re: [MBZ] OT Blue Angels
I never saw anything like that at Flight school 101. I will grant that experienced fighter pilots can do the maneuvers. Most of the time they are not allowed to do them anywhere near civilians. It still is exciting to see the practice, more so than the real show. The guy in Pensecola with the brass (was in charge or the Angels for a few years) said they take planes that are no longer suitable for military service, and strip them for the Blue Angels. Like planes that landed too hard. Yes, they were expensive, but after they have been pranged, they are not worth so much. Not to throw a damp blanket over the hype, but the Blue Angels are doing nothing more than Flight School 101 maneuvers -- but in very expensive jets. I spent the summer of '68 in the English Northlands. One older lady there started talking about the war and one of the things she told me was that they could tell the difference between the German aircraft because the engines had a high pitch whine while the American planes had a low rumble. Re: [MBZ] A/B-26
I worked a coupla summers at the local airfield at a FBO, there was a guy there (he was like 6'8 and probably weighed 350lb -- he was absolutely huge, and had a little tiny wife who barely made 5', she would often ride with him. He had to sorta pour himself into the left seat) who had a D-18, or flew it for someone else, hauling the mail overnight. He would leave most evenings 8 or 9PM, get back the next morning 5 or 6AM. When I was working I got to oil and fuel the plane. He would say, Check the fuel and fill the oil. I would take a 5 gal can of oil up the wing and usually pour 2-3 gal into each engine, sometimes more. It was loads of fun, esp since the previous 2-3 gal seemed to be coating the wing by the engine. It was even more fun in the rain, water on the oil on the wing, me and a 5gal can of oil on a wing at about 30deg slope, trying to stay upright enough to lift the can and pour it in the little oil fill hole and keep the rain out of the funnel... It was harder to do from a ladder behind the props at the front of the wing and engine, but sometimes that was the only way to get to the filler unless I wanted to wash the wing first so I could get some traction. I think most of the oil got ejected in the first 10 seconds after starting the beasts, in clouds of black and white smoke. --R On 4/17/2010 12:34 AM, Dieselhead wrote: When I was a kid, I loved going to McCormick place (Chicago), because from there I could see Meggs Field on the lake.
