Been away from the computer for a few days. Just getting

I have tools.

I have a garage and a hoist.

I have parts cars.

I'm willing to help.

However, I think my place is a bit too far. Missouri is a long

Replace the pump, it's probably defective and operating when it's not

Yeah I popped the little cap off the hub and looked at the end of the

I guess I could grind another notch in the hub though, and install a new

different (and most likely would not care about maintaining the AC or
getting R12 at the crack house ..or its ebay equivalent ) The 100 plus

about 60 miles a day for work. I have kept its appearance respectable. I
maintain it. It had 160K when I got it, It currently has 250K. I plan on
at leas another 100K.

My original plan was the seat covers ...
The passenger seat might be saved by this, very likely would also need
the seat frame..

The drivers seat is another story
Needs the seat frame (springs), the power unit is somehow damaged (a
size large tire shop employee ran it into the stops, it sort of
recovered, then I had some paint work and it never went forward again,
with out getting out of the car and pushing forcefully wile the switch
is engaged It clicks like slipping rears or something.
and (on the drivers seat), I seriously doubt if I took it apart, I would
ever get a new cover over the old foam ...if the old foam did not denigrate

Now it the power unit is savable, new padding and foam would be rather

Now as to other years and models of the 126 car, (the BMW / other seat
is the worst case back up plan). What is interchangeable with these
seats (from the 126 cars)?

can a passenger seat be use as a drivers? or are they different?
Can the arm rest be moved?
Is the rear cushion guts(pading) ( from a different year 126 passenger

I don't need the memory feature but need the basic power to work ( be
adjustable).

2010-06-21 Thread Curt Raymond
There isn't just a keyway through the wheel? Can't just get a piece of key at
the hardware store and drive it through?

A friend of mine had a mower that the keyway rotted off the axle, I was mowing
his lawn and ended up rolling down a big hill backwards when that wheel lost
all traction... I ended up using about 4" of key to get enough connection to
make it work...

Looks like my problem is the
transaxle after all; I removed the rear
wheels and found that the
woodruff key that locks the wheel hub to the
axle were sheared off on
one side.  The other side doesn't look much
better off.

Problem
is the keys seem to be welded to the inside of the hub.  I can't
drive
the remains out because the axle shaft is only about 5/8" diameter
so
I can't really get anything inside the hub, nor do I see any good way

I'm tempted to just weld the
hubs to the axles.  If I ever need to
remove them I can grind off the

Re: [MBZ] Converted AC question

2010-06-21 Thread Peter Frederick
Replace the compressor before if fills the system with shrapnel -- if
it's knocking, you can TRY adding oil by removing it, dumping out
what's in it, and adding the correct amount (128 mL if i remember
correctly, but check first). Use only PAG oil with that system, the
compressor does NOT like ester oils unless it's also full of
hydrocarbon oil.

I would flush as well as possible, too. 1:1 mixture of dry methanol
and hexane, or buy the stuff at the auto parts store. Tons of black
crap will come out of the condenser, which is good. If there is any
"aluminum paint" in there, install a filter in the suction hose or
the next compressor will die really fast.

Replace all the 0-rings while you are at it and yank the rad -- there
will be a huge collection of dead bugs and crap between the condenser
and radiator that needs to go. If not, you will have poor
performance at idle.

It's a two way pump (but the pump is in the trunk.).

Find one of the lines under the carpet and apply pressure or vaccum
until the locks cycle open and the trunk will be unlocked.

Replace the pump, it's probably defective and operating when it's not
supposed to. Also check for loose wires or a bad switch in one of
the doors.

[MBZ] 560 trunk locked

2010-06-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I was out working on the 560 a little yesterday and noticed the locks
had locked themselves. I have noticed it seems to do this for some
strange reason when sitting. likely I did not have the key in it. The
first time it did it while sitting I did have the key in it and it
locked, had to order a new key from Rusty. Anyway, now the central
locking does not seem to want to unlock and the trunk is locked.
Trouble is, the lock on the trunk appears different than the others and
the key will not unlock it. Any ideas on unlocking it without the key?
Could I apply vacuum somewhere to unlock it that way?

[MBZ] Changing hoses etc.

2010-06-21 Thread R A Bennell
My 115 300D finally got a bit of attention this past weekend. The vent hoses on
the fuel tank would seep and drip
when the tank was full. I let it run down to where the low fuel light was on
and then changed out the hoses - all
of them at the tank end. Got a bit of a shower in diesel a couple of times.
Mostly in trying to change the pickup
and return lines. Also changed the screen in the bottom of the tank but not too
bad - mostly just on my arm above
my blue rubber gloves. Probably did not need to change the screen as it looked
about as clean as the new one. It
was old enough that the base on it was brass whereas, the new one is aluminum -
at least I assume that means it has
been in there a while. Did not have the right allen socket so got a bolt that
fit and a couple of nuts and used
that. It was not all that tight. Only about a gallon and a half of fuel came
out. All looked pretty clean. A
benefit of living in the cold north I suppose given what I hear you folks talk
about on here. The hardest part was
changing out the vent hoses as the clamps are above the lip on the tank and the
swaybar is in the way. A long
screwdriver did the trick. The new rubber hose seemed a bit thicker than the
old braided stuff so the old clamps
were too tight and the new gear clamps I got may be slightly large but there
does not appear to be any stress on
those hoses so it should be alright.

Re: [MBZ] Converted AC question

2010-06-21 Thread Rich Thomas
I actually did not hook up the gauges (too lazy to get them out) and
just put the can/hose/gauge on and dumped in the juice until it showed
blue on the can gauge. I thought about getting them out, but then I
realized I wouldn't know the proper pressures anyway, so it would be
kind of a misplaced effort. I did get cool air though, half comfy even
on these hot days.

You know what they would be (remembering it is 134)?

The AC on the 84 300SD was converted at some point to R134, looks like
it was a proper job (whatever that means). It was not blowing much cool
so I put 1.5 cans of 134 in it, and it is blowing pretty cool now on a
90F day. But the compressor is making Unhappy Noises, kind of a
graunching sound at lower revs, and the belt looks like it was really
being strained -- it is pretty tight when not running, but the "free"
side is deflecting and flopping quite a bit while running, and it
sounded like it was squeaking a bit suggesting a heavy load on it at the
compressor. The belt looks a little frayed, so I guess replacing it
soon would be prudent anyway. Looks like there might be some AC oil on
the hoses down near it, and on the hoses going into the condenser,
though it is hard to tell if it is regular oil or AC stuff, but since it
is on those hoses mostly I am thinking AC oil. Should I get a can of
refrigerant with some oil in it, shoot some of that in too, just to see
if it makes the compressor happier? Or is the compressor nearing Fail
status? (Or both?)

[MBZ] rear axle bearings 84 300D 291,000 miles

2010-06-21 Thread Mike Esh
Is there a good DIY article out there on how to replace the rear
(permanent bearings) on an 84 300D? Could/should axles be switched
from side to side at this time?

Thanks,
Mike
Whitehall, MI

P.S. Still working on determining loss of diesel prime on same car.
Slowly changing hoses as time allows. Last effort will be changing
manual pump and seal. Currently has new style and fuel is not leaking
anywhere that I can see.

I should either have had it shipped or not brought my wife with me to get it.
In either case I'd be driving it now rather than futzing with the red 190D.

Re: [MBZ] '84 190D heater valve

2010-06-21 Thread Curt Raymond
You don't need to take out the battery, just take the grill thats over the
wiper motor off, its right there plain as day.

Now I need to find out why it isn't getting vacuum.

The heater valve is behind the battery, and is exactly as pictured.  You
have to remove the battery, then the cover behind the battery, then the
cover to the side of that, and maybe even the cover under the wiper
blades and its right there.  The 2nd pic is the aux water pump.

So anyway I think I've got a good electro-magnetic heater valve on my

I already told him he could store it here-about an hour & 1/2 away. My wife

I would say so. After removing the valve cover, everything up top looks good

Re: [MBZ] 190DT Prechamber

2010-06-21 Thread Frederick W Moir

Clowns, et al.
The pre-chamber is $244 new from Rusty. Or $204 per his generous offer.
I have managed to clean up the threads on the original, install injector
and torque to spec.
I cannot, however, find an '87 190DT for $200 within a reasonable radius
of Boston, or anywhere else for that matter.
Did spot a 300DT with 602 reasonably local, however the chancellor of
the exchequer points out the state of the current budget does not
support new purchases of unnecessary (?) spare automobiles, especially
ones that do dot run.

Smile, people will think you know something.

I especially feel a bit bad about meeting Loren because he caught me at a bad

Max.
My wife's wise to that one!
Penalty of marrying an intelligent woman.
A friend did offer a parking space, and boy was I tempted!
Did get the pre-chamber threads cleaned up, the injector fits smoothly
and torques down to spec. We'll see, Hmmm?

Re: [MBZ] Hard start problem returns- Update

2010-06-21 Thread MG
That is a possibility that I didn't want to contemplate. It's in
the bottom of the valley and not a fun job to get to. It does
have a bit more then the usually heard about 100,000 miles on the
pump. I guess I may have to ask about that the next time I go to
Jacksonville.

Message-ID:

Check with a diesel injection service -- I'm not familiar with
this particular pump, but a failed pressure valve or a worn rotor
will give this problem, along with low power warm. You should
NOT be able to get vapor lock, as the injection lines should be
holding pressure up to the pop pressure of the injectors! 1500
psi is typical, now way the fuel can get hot enough to boil
unless the pressure isn't holding in the lines.

Might be time for a pump overhaul, those distributor pumps often
require lubrication supplement with ultra low sulfur fuel or they
wear fast. My old Volvo pump had to be rebuilt for this reason.

Mitch.
True. may be hard to start.
The pre-chamber in the head and secure, then using the plastic crap
excluder to get the right angle and the wery wery carefully turn the
handle.
After that I'll probably call Rusty!

Larry,

Thanks, and I'll give them a call. When I ordered the paint at their
online site, no primer choice was allowed.

Ask Paintscratch to provide the primer too - that way you'll be sure of
getting a compatible primer the wrong primer and it will all be
falling off. ;-^
