I've experienced 153 deg F, wearing 70 lbs of body armor and a side arm,
during a training exercise. That was hot. I learned on that day that
after the temperature exceeds about 125, the number becomes meaningless,
and no matter how much hotter it got it still felt like about 125.
Don't forget to stay hydrated!

Still cheaper than a black-market baby, which is over $75k now I'll bet.

We started an education IRA for our daughter, which back then was
limited to $2k per year contributions but extremely flexible about
spending limitations. I intended to use some to pay for private high
school if needed, but Congress caved in to the teachers unions and
eliminated that ability, so it can only be used for college now. Still
very flexible, so we'll keep contributing.

How will you learn to change a diaper Donald? When my wife was
expecting, we took some pre-birth education classes at the hospital, and
the nurse who taught the class (also was our delivering nurse which was
very cool) covered not only all the pregnancy and delivery stuff but
also what I'll call 'new parent 101' which included feeding and diaper
changing.

One of the things this nurse said about beer that I'll never forget.
She breast-fed all three of her kids, and her way to enjoy a beer was to
drink the beer while breast feeding, because the milk expressed would be
alcohol free (it was made before the alcohol hit the blood stream) and
the next batch of milk wouldn't be made until after the alcohol had been
metabolized, so she didn't share any beer with the baby.

We got some high surf yesterday, washed out a bit of Folly Beach at high

I saw a 3 liter 4 cyl Isuzu Diesel yesterday.  I thought it would be
just the ticket for a pickup truck.  But is is a stationary engine,
not farhtzoid (sp) do it would probably need at least a 7 speed trand
to really take advantage of its capability.  I'd guess in the rest of
the world, Isuzu makes this engine for vehicular use, and that type
would work with normal transmissions.

On a more practical basis, find a crunched Sprinter, and put the 2.7L
MB in your pickup, or put in an OM603.  It won't win any races, but
it will be more economical.  If you worked on lowering drag and
weight, you could get some MPG gains too

I can't figger out why nobody will offer a lightweight 2.5 to 3.5 L
inline turbodiesel in the light truck market.  I sure see a lot of
Sprinters.  I know people like the lower operating cost of a Sprinter
vs 400CID v-8 Deetriot iron.

I have toyed with the idea of watching of a Sprinter chassis cube van
(with a crunched box) and converting it to a pickup-like
thing/trailer toter.

[MBZ] OT electrical connection for outboard motor

2010-09-03 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
I'm getting our sailboat ship-shape after four years of outdoor storage,
and the battery cable that runs from the battery (inside the hull) to
the outboard motor needs to be replaced.

The boat came with a real "There I fixed it!" solution, which is a heavy
cable from the battery mated to a extension cord 30amp locking plug,
with the opposite gender plug attached at the end of the cable coming
from the motor. By disconnecting this plug, the motor can be removed if
needed.

Do any of you Sailors know what/where to get the correct connection
hardware? Heavy cable is not a problem - I'm planning to use a jumper
cable. I'd like to get back to a more original electrical connection
between the outboard engine and the battery, assuming it won't cost me
an arm and a leg.

2010-09-03 Thread LWB250
My "new" 2004 Focus wagon has been gradually approaching 25 mpg in 100% city
driving. Last tank was 24.8 MPG. I'm really interested to see what will
happen after I get the ATF replaced with Mobil 1 ATF.

I'm betting I can get over 30 MPG on a full highway tank...

It's nothing special but it's reliable as heck and cheap to maintain. The
local Ford dealer does oil changes with an OEM synth/dino blend and tire
rotation for $26. I can't buy a jug of Mobil 1 and a filter for that.

Re: [MBZ] 119mpg claim, no its not a CL ad

2010-09-03 Thread Walt Zarnoch
My take is thus.
They bloat the engine with emissions crap, that reduces fuel economy, so you
make more (total) emissions then if you didn't have the emissions crap. Mind
you some of the nitrides and sulpher compounds are reduced and/or
eliminated, which can be argued to be a good thing by most, but when you end
up burning twice as much fuel to get from point A to point Z, it's worse in
my mind than having a few ppm more crud in the exhaust stream.

As for diesel electric hybrids, I'm hoping to see one come out.
And not ones like that Toy-Pri transfer case crud either...

I might just nab another ram 50, a 615, and an electric forklift motor...

Re: [MBZ] OT electrical connection for outboard motor

2010-09-03 Thread R A Bennell
Boat motors will normally just have a heavy cable coming out of the housing and
going to the battery with a normal
battery post clamp on the end. Usually with a big wing nut to permit removal of
the cable.

I don't think that is going to fit your purpose if you wish to be able to
remove the motor without taking all of
the cable back to the battery.

Let me suggest you stop by a welding supply shop. You should be able to buy
heavy cable there by the foot as well
as inline connectors that are used for extension of the welding cables. That
should give you a removable setup and
lots of current capacity.

Good idea - thanks Randy. Yes - the battery cable goes through a water
tight hull penetration and then another 5 feet or so to the battery, so
pulling the whole cable to remove the motor is not an option. I might
have to put a disconnect under the motor cover - that might be smarter,
would be out of the weather that way.

I just searched and purchased 10' of wiring for an upgraded RV power
converter. the cheapest I found was here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001550DVU/ref=oss_product

Although others complained about corroded wire, mine arrived tinned on the
end with no connector. It is 4 ga. wire, so plenty for the max 70 A. output
of the converter.

Be advised though that the marine grade cables I also looked at are tinned
the full length to avoid corrosion. That might be the "right stuff" for
your application.

Watch for white smoke on startup -- when cold, the water in the
coolant will make copious white smoke until the engine warms up.

Check for cold pressure in the coolant tank, also traces of oil

And check for coolant in the AC drains -- it's not impossible for the
heater core or header to leak.

Check weep hole on the bottom of the water pump (a huge pain on that
car) since it may only leak while running down the road.

[MBZ] Virus

2010-09-03 Thread Rick Knoble

Hi All,

My email got an infection some how. If you got an email from me with no
subject, DO NOT open it.

I have a question for the computer savy among you.

I run Linux, Ubuntu specifically. I also use an iPhone.  I do not use an email
client, I use Hotmail, web based through my web browser. Apparently this virus,
worm or whatever got my contacts and did a mass emailing.

Two questions.

How did this happen using Linux? Is it a MS problem or an iPhone problem or a
Linux problem?

How do I get rid of it? Especially if it is on the Windows Live server and
neither of my computers or iPhone?

Help!

Anyway congrats Don, guess you'll be needing a S124 in the near future,

One of the things this nurse said about beer that I'll never forget.
She breast-fed all three of her kids, and her way to enjoy a beer was to
drink the beer while breast feeding, because the milk expressed would be
alcohol free (it was made before the alcohol hit the blood stream) and
the next batch of milk wouldn't be made until after the alcohol had been
metabolized, so she didn't share any beer with the baby.

Re: [MBZ] OT Metric temperatures and the ChiChi shaker

2010-09-03 Thread Rich Thomas
My roommate from MIT was from there and went back and is a prof at the
university. He was a strange guy, wore sandals year-round (which in
Cambridge is quite a feat) and shorts until it got down below 0F, and
spent about $30 a month on food, but ate quite well. I should try to
get in touch with him.

Sounds like ChiChi on a normal day.

Re: [MBZ] 91 350SDL trirsty

2010-09-03 Thread Peter Frederick
Replace the radiator cap. These engines "burp" badly with no
pressurization, and if you have a bad cap, it's gonna belch coolant
when shut off hot, only for a few minutes. the overflow tank will
get too full because there is no suction back into the reservoir due
to the bad cap, and you loose coolant.

If you drive on the highway and pull into a rest stop and shut it off
without cooling it down, it will blow coolant out of the overflow tank.

You should also do a pressure test to make sure the tank is not
cracked. I've also seen the swage break off the filler neck so that
the cap won't seal even if good. This caused my 300D to overheat in
the mountains on the interstate, only on a hot day.

Just thinking out loud as I don't really know W126s, but the carpets aren't
wet after a drive, are they?  They would dry pretty quick in this warm
weather, but then again, if any was leaking into the driver compartment,
you'd probably smell the amount you're talking about.
