DSL, that ain't exactly a big ticket item as it uses the existing telephone lines and seems to work pretty well most of the time. So long as you live within X distance of the switch office. Which we don't. We live 12 minutes from a shopping mall (10 from the freeway) and DSL doesn't come out this far, not by a substantial margin! No cable, either. New, all-digital, TV _barely_ makes it here, once we put an antenna that looks like a bedspring up on the roof. Most days it works fine. Urban thinking sucks. We do happen to have wireless, courtesy of a BBQ-sized microwave antenna and a 1W RF amplifier nailed to the side of the house. Re: [MBZ] Digital images, PPI, etc.
So what is the quick and dirty solution (winders, mac, linux) to scale down images for emails, etc.? On my Mac I use a script that can shrink from 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16. (The 1:1 is useful for eliminating EXIF, and re-encoding.) The script is attached. It calls out the readily-available djpeg and cjpeg tools (from the PBM utilities, I believe). Would be equally at home on Linux. I usually just try scales until I get a file size I approve of yet that doesn't ruin by overshrinking. I used this script, inside another script, to process the 25 DVD's of images my dad sent me, the full-sized scans of his lifetime of photography. Got all of 'em on one CD, which makes for easy and quick browsing. (Easy to get out the big ones if you want to make a print or look at detail.) -- Jim #!/bin/sh # Script to shrink to 1/8 (1/64'th, actually) an overlarge camera JPEG. # The scale factor can be changed. if [ $# -lt 2 -o $# -gt 3 ]; then echo usage: "`basename $0` [] infile outfile # Scale is 2|4|8|16" exit 1 fi SCALE=8 if [ $# -eq 3 ]; then SCALE=$1 shift fi if [ $1 = $2 ]; then echo "`basename $0`: infile cannot be the same as outfile!" exit 1 fi < $1 djpeg -scale 1/$SCALE | cjpeg > $2 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

> Rick Knoble wrote: > So what is the quick and dirty solution (winders, mac, linux) > to scale down images for emails, etc.? I generally use about 1000 wide and 700 high for general images. If the person viewing might want to zoom in to get a closer look at something, it might be better to use bigger numbers. Probably any image editor can do the job. If there is one you are familiar with, check the help files for "resize" or "scale". Linux command line: Imagemagick (also available for MS Win and probably Mac too) "convert in.jpg -geometry 1000x700 out.jpg" This will make the image fit within a 1000x700 box, but maintain the aspect ratio. The real power is it easily do an entire directory full of images. Linux GUI: the Gimp krita MS Win: Irfanview Image > Resize/Resample (ctrl+R) Be sure "preserve aspect ratio" is check. Set to whatever size you want, or choose a "common size" from the right pane. Mac: GraphicConverter was an independent program, then bundled. I have no idea what it's status is now. I know it can scale (resize) The trick is not necessarily the tool, but how it's used. Also, if it's just for general email and web, casual viewing, setting the jpeg quality lower will save a bunch of bytes too. Unfortunately, there isn't a standard way of describing the quality level. Re: [MBZ] New Snook Car!
It's easier than you think. 1.) Know your price BEFORE you go. Do your research/due diligence. 2.) Be realistic. The dealer has to make a living, too. 3.) Most important: Be willing to walk away. Number three is the most important. Dealers will play on your emotions. Being willing to walk no matter what the case is your leverage. If they are willing to let you walk, do some more research, as you may not be realistic in your price. I once bought a Chevy Suburban that took four trips to the dealer and over a week to close the deal. My last car was $300 away from the price I wanted. I got up and walked away. Before I was at the door I had a deal. I love buying cars - I got the bug from my Dad, who was an executive VP for General Motors in the 60s. He always had program cars, but bought cars for my Mom. I got to go along and watch/listen. He considered it great sport. I.e., say you have an image that prints out at 4x6" on your inkjet printer; go to the "resize" dialog in Photoshop and tell it to change the dpi from 300 to 100 and you'll get a file that looks the same on the screen and prints out the same size, but is one-ninth the size in kB, and nine times more pixellated. Arguably this behavior muddies the issue, but things have been this way at least since the very first Macs, when the little 72-pixel-per-inch screen was a selling point just because it meant that on-screen image size corresponded exactly to printed image size (on the 72-dpi ImageWriter dot-matrix printer); when the first LaserWriter came along, I remember discussions of how 72-dpi bitmapped clip art and fonts were ugly when scaled up to the LaserWriter's native 300 dpi, and how a 300-dpi bitmap, on the other hand, looked good on both screen and paper (with, again, the implicit premise that a change in dpi could affect file size without affecting "eyeball" size). Boy, _that's_ the truth! But now it's time for a lesson on computer images. "DPI" (dots per inch) or "PPI" (pixels per inch) is a useless number EXCEPT if there is a piece of paper involved. In other words, for printers and scanners only. It can be helpful when dealing with documents that will be print - say, putting a photo on a layout for a page to be printed. For digital cameras and computer monitors it is useless - because there is no way to measure an inch! While the image is electronic, all that matters is number of pixels. 1600 px wide image is 1600 px. If you print it with a resolution of 1600 DPI, it will be one inch wide. If you print it at a resolution of 160 DPI it will be 10 inches wide. If you don't print it, the DPI is just a tag that rides along with the image and nothing more. If your computer is set to 1600 px wide, it doesn't matter if it's a 3" screen or a 20 foot screen the 1600 px image will fill the 1600 px screen. (if the view program is set to show (zoomed to) one pixel per pixel) So I'm picking on Alex a bit. *smiles* But changing the DPI won't help make huge images smaller. _Scaling_ the images so it is composed of fewer pixels is what's needed. -- Philip, image pro - now off his soapbox ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] New Snook Car!
Something you all might be interested in, if you haven't heard of it: http://carwoo.com/ You register, indicate what car you are shopping for, and dealers bid against each other to offer you the best price. I think for free you get three bids, you can pay a fee and you will get more bids. They claim to save an average of $5000 off MSRP. Note, it's for new cars only, at the current time. I have not used it but have heard through the grapevine that people like it. I think most of us on this list are used-car buyers, but for those who might want (or SWMBO wants) a new car, might be worth a try. Links to attachments are better. You can always download from the link if you want a local copy for some reason. We went through this about a year ago right? Kaleb allowed attachments for a while and the list seemed to prefer the current method. Of course I'm one of the old luddites who thinks HTML has no place in email, either. If so, you could have got way more selling it on your own." It was an Expedition (big sucker). I don't think we could have done better, actually. It had 150,000 miles and the ABS light was on. Plus, we got them way down on the Charger and my wife was a master negotiator on the trade. We originally looked at a 2008 Charger. They wanted $16,900 (which is way too much). We got them down to $15,000 and they offered $2500 for the Expedition. I had a dealer friend of mine check the manheim auctions and the Expedition was going for $3000. We couldn't make a deal on the 08 Charger for the $250 payment my wife wanted. So, we called another dealer right from the showroom and found a 2010 for $16,900. They started falling all over themselves to make a deal. Finally they showed us the car we bought. They had it priced at $17,900. Edmunds prices it at $19,000. I think that's a little high. NADA shows $17,900. Kelly Bluebook $19,300. Also, it was a certified used. That doesn't do anything for me immeadiately because its still under factory warranty. But, it increases the powertrain warranty. Anyway, they told us they would sell it for $15,900 and give us $3000 for our Expedition. We said no. My wife was awesome. She kept saying, the payment has to be $250 a month and we won't go longer on the loan. They got it to within $8 and she still said no. We were there for almost 5 hours. Finally, they ended up selling their car for $15,900 and giving us $4400 for the expedition. I had a potential buyer for my car for $5000. But, I don't think I could have got them down their car if I didn't have a trade. Either way, we feel like we got a great deal. And most importantly, my wife is happy. When she is happy, that means she won't be so eagle-eyed about my cars. So, in other words, she has a nice car and now I can get back to my car buying/selling fun. Donald H. Mine's a 603, 87 300D, but you can pull basic codes from the code reader socket. I believe there is a procedure using the front panel on the later models, but I'm not sure if that applies to W210 and later only or later model W124s. Re: [MBZ] '95 E300 with OM606 - how long to reach operating temp?
As in coolant circulating pump? Yes. My question arises due to the difference in engine temperature (gauge) behavior, not in how quickly heat is produced in the passenger compartment. I'm suspicious of my t-stat, but I'd like confirmation from some other owners that long warm-up compared to a OM603 turbo is normal. -Max From: Gerry Archer To: Mercedes Discussion List Sent: Mon, February 7, 2011 10:11:20 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] '95 E300 with OM606 - how long to reach operating temp? We have a new (to us) car and I still have the Mercedes. I took the list's collective advice and traded off the Expedition for a Dodge Charger. Mrs. Snook is VERY happy. We thought we were going to buy a 2008 Charger SE, but we ended up making a better deal on a 2010 Charger SXT with only 31,000 miles. It is a VERY nice car. My wife loves it. I was surprised about how many components are Mercedes parts - front and rear suspension, steering column, and various other parts. The one thing that this one doesn't have that I wished for was the 5 -speed Mercedes transmission. On the non-hemi Chargers, the 5speed only comes with All Wheel Drive. Donald H. Donald H. Your wife must enjoy the negotiation game, too, to have spent five hours at the dealer. More power to her! With the economy like it is and new-car sales way down, I think dealers should be lucky if they get anywhere near invoice (or blue book on a used car). Re: [MBZ] '95 E300 with OM606 - how long to reach operating temp?
It does need to be replaced, but what I was saying is that it blows hard enough to hear, meaning the heater air temp is higher than that inside the car. 4 miles is a bit long, I'd check to make sure the aux pump is running to circulate water to the heater core. If it is not, it takes a long, long time to heat up, in spite of the fact that the engine temp comes up faster than that.
