If you have a source for all the right parts (which is probably more parts
than you would think, i.e., you probably need to have a donor 240D that
you are going to leave incapacitated), you should be able to make the
swap.

I found that out when I changed our 240D with an automatic transmission to
a naturally-aspirated 300D with a manual transmission. With the major
parts from a donor and smaller bits and wear items from Rusty, everything
bolted right together and fit the chassis without problems.

Does 'clean' mean 'I just washed it', or should 'clean' mean 'there isn't a big

Still kinda thinking of buying this one.
Maybe sell the 16v and put my 190d turbo motor in a facelifted W124.

I see what you mean about the cowl being full of tree droppings from last fall,
but I only see one other vehicle and it's parked in a driveway (mobile home
park). Or is the back yard comment a reference to some of the really old heaps

No. Just the amount of cars I see in the back yards in Detroit, Lansing,
Deerborn, etc. when I have been out there. Seems folks around Detroit are
"attached" to thier cars a bit more than average.

Re: [MBZ] Dc update

2011-08-07 Thread WILTON
Late one afternoon in about 1993, SWMBO and I were departing DC southbound
on our '80 240D during a heavy snow storm. As I approached the bridge near
the Jefferson Memorial, traffic in the 2 or 3 or more lanes to the right was
stalled, while a lane on the far left was clear. Of course, I took the open
lane on the left and went whipping right on across the bridge. Soon after I
was committed to this lane, I noticed that it was for multiple-occupancy (3
or more pass.) vehicles. Well, it was snowing very hard making for poor
visibility, but the pavement was still clear - only wet - and I just kept
cruising at 55 to 60 mph past hundreds of cars still stalled in all the
lanes to my right. After a few minutes, SWMBO asked, "Why are we able to
cruise along so freely, and all those other cars are just sitting there or
creeping along so slowly?" I replied, "I don't know, but as long as this
lane is clear, I'm gonna keep cruising south." I drove like that in that
open left lane for probably 35 miles, until the lane ended, and I had to
merge with "regular" traffic, which was moving freely by then. When I
noticed that I had gotten into a multi-occupancy vehicle lane, I thought I'd
cause more trouble by trying to get out of it, and it was snowing so hard, a
cop could likely not see that there were only 2 in the vehicle, and it would
cause more congestion to stop me, so I just kept cruising.

Well there is a 2-lane HOV section that runs down toward Fredricksburg,
then merges with 3 lanes of I-95. The HOV lanes were moving along until
about 2 miles before the merger, then they stopped as that two lanes had
to merge into one lane of 3 backed-up lanes, which was probably causing
the 3 regular lanes to back up for 20 or 30 miles. Insane.

I have noticed that the further north (at least to the northeast) you
go, the more nannyish the states become, and the more expensive (gas in

I'd never heard of the "War of Northern Aggression" as I grew up in Wisconsin.
Initially I thought to myself that all these Southern folk should stop living
in the past, but 10 years on I'm beginning to think there are a few good
reasons to mark the difference between North and South. Each side has good and
bad, I'll always be a Yankee, and I'm probably a better person for knowing both
cultures.

Also, down here if you go to Sunday service and the preacher allows the
congregation to pick a song from the hymnal, don't ask for "Battle Hymn of the
Republic". Trust me on that.

Oh come on bubba, it's only about 95F today though the humidity is up
there since we had a bit of rain yesterday evening. It was about 100F
in both Philly and DC earlier in the week, so we are sort of a wash in
the temperature department this summer. I think it was actually hotter
up there than it was here for those few days until it cooled down a
bit. I just rode my bike down the road to get a paper, why, it is
positively balmy out!

just to make them think the speaker is stupid. It usually works pretty
well.

[MBZ] OT - Plymouth van tranny question

2011-08-07 Thread OK Don
We were cruising all around town (OKC metro area) lst week on a 110F in the
shade day, with the AC on full blast. The car - 1 1997 Plymouth Grand
Caravan, 3.3 engine, 115,000 miles - decided to only run in second gear. I
stopped and checked the tranny fluid - it was a bit over full. Procedded to
take the secondary roads home (about 25 miles), driving no more than 40
(3000 rpm or so). three blocks from home, the water temp started to shoot up
rapidly so I turned off the AC. Got it in the drive before it hit the temp.
red line. It's been sitting until today, when I took it out for a spin to
see if it would shift or over heat. It did fine - acted normally. I did
think I heard a low pitch whine when I first started it coming from the
right front area - loader under the car, but couldn't identify anything
wrong nor the source.

Any guesses whether the high temps and over-full fluid was the cause, and
it's OK, or do I need a new tranny before I drive it 2600 miles starting a
week from now???

The NY, NJ and Boston accents that you are referring to are a lower class

[MBZ] Brake Question

2011-08-07 Thread alanduff

My recently acquired 83 300D had weak brakes when I bought it. The pedal was
soft. While bleeding the system I found the front calipers were barely working.
Rebuilt the calipers and now the breaks are still soft. Bled with a pressure
system and I think I have all the air out. The pedal will pump up and then
slowly sink under pressure. The system has 20 inches of vacuum at the tee to
the brake booster. Seems I remember the pedal action is a sign of a bad brake
master cylinder. Any opinions?

Leaky piston seals in master cylinder = sinking pedal, no loss of fluid.
Leaking anything else = sinking pedal and loss of fluid.

LA from OK, and there's probably more out there that I haven't heard, not to

Re: [MBZ] Brake Question

2011-08-07 Thread Dan Penoff
Yup. Sounds like the cups (seals) in your master cylinder are worn or bad.

One other thing to check before you replace it:

Make sure the clevis is allowing the piston to return all the way to the end of
the bore.

You can do this by checking that the pedal comes all the way up and that there
is clearance between the clevis and the piston when the brake pedal is at rest.

Like Mitch said, sounds like a master cylinder.

On a car that old, you should replace the four rubber hoses. You'll be
amazing by the improvement in pedal feel, and you reduce you chances of be
stranded by a seized up brake significantly.

I would check grounds. Sounds like the trans is not shifting into od and
lockup when there is a high electrical load. Try to run lights, ac, etc and
see if trans acts up again. Negative battery terminal was bad on the last

I, to can easily and readily distinguish accents from different areas, even
MI from MN, NE, Dakotas, etc., or VA from NC and different areas within NC.
BTW, I may have reacquired a bit of Southern since my return to NC 32 years
ago. Everybody has some sort of an accent, and that's O. K. - it doesn't
mean that one is any smarter, or whatever, than another. I've even learned
to understand that "youse guys" really means "y'all."

Far from it, I can distinguish a VA accent from NC from SC from Charleston
from LA from OK, and there's probably more out there that I haven't heard,
not to mention Gullah which is really a dialect.

Far from it, I can distinguish a VA accent from NC from SC from Charleston from

Re: [MBZ] Brake Question

2011-08-07 Thread Max Dillon
Master cylinder is leaking internally, time to replace it.

Just did this job on my E300; I bought some fish tank air tubing at Wallyworld
to help bleed. Drained and removed reservoir first, then disconnected all the
lines at the MC. Replaced the MC and put everything back together, filled the
reservoir, connected air tubing from caliper bleed bolt on left front wheel And
ran it back to the opening in the reservoir, opened the bleed bolt and
commenced pumping the brake pedal until all the air was out of the front
circuit, and then gravity bled rear circuit at left rear wheel. All this in a
hotel parking garage.

Had the MC new from Rusty for about a month before I had time to do the deed.

My recently acquired 83 300D had weak brakes when I bought it. The pedal was

Rebuilt the calipers and now the breaks are still soft. Bled with a pressure
system and I think I have all the air out. The pedal will pump up and then
slowly sink under pressure. The system has 20 inches of vacuum at the tee to
the brake booster. Seems I remember the pedal action is a sign of a bad brake
master cylinder. Any opinions?

OK - will do. The tranny is working fine right now - full blast AC, but no
lights. It is only 95 today, so 15 degrees cooler than when we had the
problem.

It was stuck in 2nd. - started in second, and would not shift out. I didn't
have the presence of mind to check reverse when i got home - wish I had.

There is some corrosion on the battery terminals, though not gross. I'll
clean them next. I did suck out about a cup of fluid, the level seems to be
right at the top of the max line now, though it's real hard to see the oil
level clearly.

Whats interesting in the north vs south thing is how much northerns concern

think of southerners as interesting and hospitable people, if we think
about them at all. I suspect we're more interested in the rest of the

Southerners, other the other hand, seem to always make a point to complain
about Northerners, as we've seen here.

While the north may have its share of pushy impatient people, and high cost

every minority you can think of lives here.

Don't know that models quirks but it follows current computer logic built
into todays cars to default to a "limp home mode" when something/anything
violates the electronic boundaries preloaded.

With full air, heat, and what ever other stressors may have been at play
perhaps one of those triggers got pulled. Perhaps a code pull at your local
friendly shop would be in order.
It is common for transmission shift points to be keyed to engine load
sensors and a raft load of other twitchy electronics.

Intermittent electrical problems are the worst. If you get luck, something
recorded one.

I am going to look at this as my replacement for Gump. Need something

had an alltrac previa for a bit and when it died we got rid of it. I
have far too many parts in storage and now no way to transport them
for putting on CL.

What should I be on the look out for with this little beauty?

Wonder if Rusty has parts, or will I have to fleabay for parts?

If it's Mercedes, Rusty can get parts for it. :)

Check what new glass is before going for it.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Plymouth van tranny question

2011-08-07 Thread G Mann
Yeah... that's what you get for going to the dark side and driving one of
those silly little computer controlled machines. Come back to the
dependable mechanical Mercedes era when something broke off you could see it
hanging and duct tape it in place till you got home. :))

I wonder how many cars and Iphones will fail when this next round of super
sun spots hits... or god forbid we have a nuke EMP somewhere flash the
sensitive electronics everyone has come to depend on. I don't see a happy
ending.

think of southerners as interesting and hospitable people, if we think
about them at all. I suspect we're more interested in the rest of the
world, and rest of the country rather than what the south thinks of us.

Southerners, other the other hand, seem to always make a point to complain
about Northerners, as we've seen here.

While the north may have its share of pushy impatient people, and high cost
of living, we're a very tolerant group. I feel that the hate, or dislike,
of large groups of any kind is much less common. After all, just about
every minority you can think of lives here.

With all due respect to Dimitri's belief that the "north is civilized"..
I'll take a night in the woods with a bunch of drunk redneck hillbillies
over a night on the street in any northern "inner city". The chances of
walking out of either with my manly virtue, my wallet, and my life would
balance toward the redneck crowd.

to transport them for putting on CL.

What should I be on the look out for with this little beauty?

Wonder if Rusty has parts, or will I have to fleabay for parts?

You my friend have never been to any of the great northern cities. By that I
mean:
Portland, Maine
Bangor, Maine
Concord, NH
Burlington, VT
Your virtue and wallet would be safe (well relatively safe, or rather as safe
as anywhere) in those places any time of day or night...

In actual factual Boston is quite a safe city. Back when I was but a college
freshman my best friend went to BU and we'd go have noodles in Chinatown at
2am. Spent time talking to hookers and pimps, almost got mugged once but
convinced the dude he was wasting his time as we had nothing of value. In all
the nights we spent in places we really shouldn't have been we were only
accosted that one time...
My friend later went to Vassar and would run into NYC and hang out in the worst
areas of Harlem. He'd literally go looking for trouble. Never did get into
anything serious luckily. He teaches English in Japan now...

(Manhattan, of course, has no accent since no body is really "from" there.)

Whats interesting in the north vs south thing is how much northerns concern
themselves with southerners... very little. I think most of us yankees
think of southerners as interesting and hospitable people, if we think
about them at all.

Classic symptoms of a master cylinder problem. The piston can't
hold the pressure.

I was successful opening one up and just cleaning and honing the
bore. But in new or rebuilt is certainly a safer way to go.

Note that there seem to be two lengths of pedal-to-piston rods.
Make sure you keep them matched... Hold it.

I'm confused.

That's the _clutch_ that has two length rods. The brake master
cylinder, I believe, is the same on any W123.
