Well, I got the throttle hooked up on the project 240D. GP relay hooked up,
one
terminal with 2 RT/SW wires hanging out with the green wire.

This car still has no steering lock, so I am running the switch dangling under
the dash with a key. starter cranks. After pumping up fuel from/to a 2 litre
bottle next to the transfer pump with the hand primer, I hear the check valve
on
the back of the pump rattling. That is a good sign. However the return fuel
has
a lot of bubbles in it. When I stop pumping, the fuel drains out and air comes
in.

I think I have a return line that is cracked badly, but I don't have return
hose
yet. So I think I am stuck until I can get some return hose. I did try
cranking after I got the fuel up, but no fuel coming out of a cracked injector
line.

I already put new hose from the fuel container to the prefilter, and from the
prefilter to the transfer pump. The line from the transfer pump to the filter
looks good, and the hard clear line to the IP looks ok. The hard clear line
from the IP check valve to the filter return fitting has been replaced. The
cigar line looks ok. The transfer pump appears to be ok, and the filter big
bolt appears to be sealed well.

Seems to me that the return lines are suspect, and that the primer pump could
be
leaking, although generally if they leak, they leak when you pump fuel, and are
ok when the top is screwed down. This one does not appear to be leaking. But
air is getting in somewhere.

So the Dissel cranky, but no far in the holes.

Funny thing... the starter cranks first, then if I turn the switch further, the
lights, buzzers and GPs come on. I am thinking maybe the pin with the double
RT/SW may need to go into the plug, rather than the pin with only one RT/SW.
If
the RT/SW indicates to the relay the switch position, the single may only come
on in the start position and the double may come on in the glow position.

1980 240D Mit 1981 OM616 and 81 GP relay. Close, but still no far.

The air (outside) and fuel (inside) seals are completely separate,
but they do tend to age together. You can make a new air seal and
install it, if you have rubber gasket sheeting and a hole punch set.

Plastic doesn't always mean cheaper. It means lighter weight. Note the

I would think that the person who decided on plastic was the same person
that decided plastic thermostat housings are the go and that radiators
should be made out of plastic, so the neck snaps off after 22 years. Well MB
no longer sells plastic thermostat housings and Behr have put a metal ring

think of the 123 as the last real Mercedes. The weird thing to me
is that when the 124 was being designed, Mercedes was a long way from
feeling pressure from the Japanese, and from what I've read they were
still very much in the mode of we'll engineer the cars as well as we
possibly can, and then set prices as high as they need to be to make a
profit. So why did someone choose to save a dollar per car by
spec'ing plastic instead of metal in such a crucial area?

I like this guy's thinking. Got me thinking that with the rise of
pretty cheap CNC machines and robots, and cheap plastic panel
manufacturing, setting up a factory to build cars like this would be
cheap and easy once some engineering is done. Could be some fun kit
opportunities too, source some standard engine/drivetrain/suspension
components. Of course the gummint would get involved and screw it all
up, but still... I bet you could send some plans and specs to China and
have a whole fleet delivered in like 8 weeks.

(Which, if anyone's interested, is still on stands in my driveway

plenty of open space around the muffler, resonator and cat to replace
any of them with a generic muffler, although the rearmost would take
some trickery with curved tubing since the stock unit has the pipes
coming in and going out at a 60-degree angle. That, however, is what
JC Whitney sells mandrel-bent exhaust tubing in various sizes and
shapes for! Anyone know off the top of their head if the exhaust on
the 124 uses standard SAE-sized pipe or if it is a wacko metric size
that is going to need welding to adapt generic parts to?)

You mount it to the part of the toothbrush that goes in and out, using
epoxy/screw/etc. And then you hook a 9 volt battery to it instead of the 2AA
batteries.

very
well for attaching the key, also. Any means of attaching the key firmly to

the plate should be good - even a bolt-and-nut - any way that you can
transfer vibrating action of the plate to the key and then into the
cylinder. I laid the base of the key flat on the plate at one of the

the
plate. Holes in the plate and the key greatly facilitated securing them to

each other. 'Probably don't have to secure the key as well as I did. 'Had
to attach the key twice; first time, I had it oriented so that I could not

get the key into the lock, 'cause the steering wheel was blocking access
 (room) for the sander.

Wilton, how exactly did the sander trick work? Did you attach the key
parallel to the sander base (i.e., flat against it in the same
orientation as the sandpaper would go), or perpendicular to it? How
did you affix the key securely---duct tape, zip ties, etc.?

I can see zip-tying the key to an electric toothbrush, but the sander
sounds more effective---faster oscillations, giving the key more
chances to hit the sweet spot with the pins.

In-line with the axis of motion.
Get one with a replaceable brush head, and somehow get the key hooked to the
rod that gets oscillated.
You don't hook it to the rotary part.

2011-09-13 Thread Randy Bennell

We are in the process of remodeling our kitchen, which was originally

thoughts about asbestos, I sent a sample of linoleum off to be tested. It
came back negative, but the samples of sheetrock/joint compound I sent
off later turned out positive.

So, last Friday and Saturday I was helped by Charles Perea of the Johnny
O. Perea Foundation to take down the sheetrock, using all proper
protections, including a high volume, HEPA filtered blower which sucks the
air in the kitchen, filters it, and blows it out an outside window. Two
very long, tiring days and we are not finished yet.

Sunday morning, we went out to the '94 E420 to go to church and found it
ran VERY roughly. So we got into the '95 E320 and drove off. We found the
heat wasn't coming on as it should.

Yesterday afternoon, I tried the E420 again, and found that it smoothed
out, but had a lot of lifter noise (I did change from Castrol 10W-40 to
Mobil 1, but grabbed the wrong bottle and it ended up with 2.5 quarts
15W-40 and 5 quarts 0W-40). The lifter noise quieted down after awhile.
I'm thinking it was a collapsed lifter and wondering how much of a
problem that will be.

I noticed on the E320 that there was more airflow out the footwell vents
as it was changing from heating to cooling than when it was in the
heating mode. I hope that's not too hard to fix.

Craig

I am surprised that they did not recommend that you just leave the
drywall alone or perhaps cover it with another layer of new stuff.

I read some of the information on their site after your post and they
seem most intent upon not disturbing any material that may include
asbestos if at all possible.

Not what most of us want to hear.

We have vermiculite insulation in the attic out at the lake and I would
love to have it gone. They (Perea) say it is best not to disburb it and
that it is difficult to test and confirm that it contains or does not
contain asbestos. I have thought seriously about trying to vaccuum it
out of the attic but do not wish to have the dust filter down into the
rooms below. The house is old enough that there is no poly vapour
barrier in the ceiling so there would be cracks that might permit some
to filter down. My other choice may be to put up a poly vapour barrier
and then cover the ceilings with new material from below so that I have
less concern about the filtering down of small particles when it is
windy out etc. The kitchen is drywall so it is fairly tight with the
exception of the two lights but the living room and one of the bedrooms
have wooden ceilings that will not be quite as tight.

I do wonder how dangerous it might be to remove it if I was careful and
wore a good respirator etc. Again, my major concern is that disturbing
it in the attic might cause the particles to filter down into the rooms
below and I am uncertain as to how one might best prevent or clean that
up after. They talk about putting poly sheeting down but it would be
difficult to cover everything and then remove it without losing some of
it. A professional crew with experience might know how to acccomlish
that but I am afraid I might just make matters worse than they currently
are.

[MBZ] I should follow my own advise: Far, WAS OM616, cranky, no far

2011-09-13 Thread Dieselhead
Today, I got some SAE 1/8 fuel line as a hasty substitute for the
real thing. This evening, I changed out the return lines, pumped it
(fuel) up with the hand pump and cranked the old car. As much as I
rail about keeping air out of the fuel lines, and all the sneaky ways
it could get in, I did not believe the return lines were so crucial.
One of them must have been broken in two under the fabric. Once I
got the return lines replaced, the fuel stayed in the clear section
of line I grafted onto the cigar hose so it would reach to the bottom
of the fuel. I cut a little of the top off a 2 liter bottle, and it
seemed to be securely wedged behind the transfer pump, held up by the
steering gear, hoses and whatnot. That seemed to make a reasonable
trial fuel tank to see if it will run.

So I got in and gave it a little crank. It fired up on 3 pretty
fast. So I got out, confirmed the fuel was coming out of the cracked
#1, and tightened it down. Then I waited a few min. to let the
starter cool. When I cranked it again, it fired almost immediately,
but soon died. (FAR IN ALL 4 HOLES!) I cranked it several more
times, and the bendix would spin out as soon as it fired, so it
didn't stay running. No time would it keep running on its own. But
it sounded good when it did fire, so I was puzzled as to why it did
not keep running.

Mrs. O'leary's cow. When I got out, I found the old cow had kicked,
and turned the fuel container on its side. The container was nearly
empty and the return hose was out of the container. It pumped fuel
all over the floor.I thought the resting place for the fuel was
pretty steady. but it was not. Fortunately, this time the cow did
not kick over a lamp to light the fuel on fire. Nor did I have hay
and straw in the vicinity.

So, I am convinced the engine will run. More work is needed to get
it to run. Next up is to drain the tank and replace the hoses. When
the hoses are all hooked up, then, with some fuel in the tank, I
will see if I can keep the old girl running on fresh fuel. After
that, i will put in the radiator, and flush the cooling system, add
exhaust system (i hope) and then it should be ready to test clutch
and brakes, then when those pass, take it around the block.

[MBZ] Mercedes Classic Center

2011-09-13 Thread Curt Raymond
Yesterday I got into LAX at 11am and since I couldn't check into my hotel until
after 3 I decided to take a ride down to the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine.
Its about a 45 minute drive down to Irvine, the Classic Center isn't all that
hard to find unless you're dazed from a day of travel.

Inside the facility is really nice, they've got 3 (!) rear engine pre-war cars
which is apparently amazingly rare. They've also got what they bill as the
nicest 180D Ponton in the world, I got some pics of the engine bay, you could
eat in there no problem. That car is glorious. Also pretty cool is the Patent
Motorwagen which is just as small in person as I expected it to be from the
videos on Youtube.

Anyway heres the pics:
http://s843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/Mercedes_Classic_Center/
I stayed there for about an hour, chatted with John about the clutch rod for my
240D(!) he suggested I modify the clutch rod I have and maybe try another MC
which he offered me a good price on. I'll have to mess with it and see.

Re: [MBZ] I should follow my own advise: Far, WAS OM616, cranky, no far

Congratulations - sounds like you're on the path to success now ---

Today, I got some SAE 1/8 fuel line as a hasty substitute for the real
thing. This evening, I changed out the return lines, pumped it (fuel) up
with the hand pump and cranked the old car. As much as I rail about keeping
air out of the fuel lines, and all the sneaky ways it could get in, I did
not believe the return lines were so crucial. One of them must have been
broken in two under the fabric. Once I got the return lines replaced, the
fuel stayed in the clear section of line I grafted onto the cigar hose so it
would reach to the bottom of the fuel. I cut a little of the top off a 2
liter bottle, and it seemed to be securely wedged behind the transfer pump,
held up by the steering gear, hoses and whatnot. That seemed to make a
reasonable trial fuel tank to see if it will run.

So I got in and gave it a little crank. It fired up on 3 pretty fast. So
I got out, confirmed the fuel was coming out of the cracked #1, and
tightened it down. Then I waited a few min. to let the starter cool. When
I cranked it again, it fired almost immediately, but soon died. (FAR IN ALL
4 HOLES!) I cranked it several more times, and the bendix would spin out
as soon as it fired, so it didn't stay running. No time would it keep
running on its own. But it sounded good when it did fire, so I was puzzled
as to why it did not keep running.

Mrs. O'leary's cow. When I got out, I found the old cow had kicked, and
turned the fuel container on its side. The container was nearly empty and
the return hose was out of the container. It pumped fuel all over the
floor.I thought the resting place for the fuel was pretty steady. but
it was not. Fortunately, this time the cow did not kick over a lamp to
light the fuel on fire. Nor did I have hay and straw in the vicinity.

So, I am convinced the engine will run. More work is needed to get it to
run. Next up is to drain the tank and replace the hoses. When the hoses
are all hooked up, then, with some fuel in the tank, I will see if I can
keep the old girl running on fresh fuel. After that, i will put in the
radiator, and flush the cooling system, add exhaust system (i hope) and then
it should be ready to test clutch and brakes, then when those pass, take it
 around the block.

Inside the facility is really nice, they've got 3 (!) rear engine pre-war
cars which is apparently amazingly rare. They've also got what they bill as
the nicest 180D Ponton in the world, I got some pics of the engine bay, you
could eat in there no problem. That car is glorious. Also pretty cool is the
Patent Motorwagen which is just as small in person as I expected it to be
 from the videos on Youtube.

 Anyway heres the pics:

I stayed there for about an hour, chatted with John about the clutch rod
for my 240D(!) he suggested I modify the clutch rod I have and maybe try
another MC which he offered me a good price on. I'll have to mess with it
 and see.

I am surprised that they did not recommend that you just leave the

I read some of the information on their site after your post and they
seem most intent upon not disturbing any material that may include
 asbestos if at all possible.

Not what most of us want to hear.

Indeed, that is the best way to go.

In our case, we wanted to move a wall and remove soffits. In addition,
there was a lot of sheetrock on the outside wall that had been wetted over
the years from an electric dryer that did not have an outside vent, a
washer drain that overflowed, and a dishwasher that had had unknown
problems before we bought the house. That whole area of sheetrock was
covered with a LOT of black mold. Since the Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) requirements of removing asbestos are higher than those of removing
black mold, we had that covered. It will be nice when it's all done, but
right now it's a LOT of work.

We have vermiculite insulation in the attic out at the lake and I would
 love to have it gone.

I know the feeling.

I do wonder how dangerous it might be to remove it if I was careful and
wore a good respirator etc. Again, my major concern is that disturbing
it in the attic might cause the particles to filter down into the rooms
below and I am uncertain as to how one might best prevent or clean that
up after. They talk about putting poly sheeting down but it would be
difficult to cover everything and then remove it without losing some of
it. A professional crew with experience might know how to acccomplish
that but I am afraid I might just make matters worse than they
 currently are.

You can do it safely without present injury to your health without much
difficulty. Doing it so there is no contamination of other parts of the
house can be much more difficult, particularly if you have not done such
work before. I'm thankful I have Charles Perea's help.

My car was a smoker car, fortunately they must have left the windows down,
not much smell.

The quarter holder on the other hand, was throughly ruined by some idjit

Wonderful stuff for killing odors of all kinds. Used it for years in
airplanes to cancel results of airsick passengers. [trust me, day old puke
smell after being in a closed up airplane is a force to contend with. Also
 works for smoke smell.]

Not particularly cheap, but worth the price, IMHO.
