Let me know if you need more info from a wiring diagram, it does sound like something is hooked to the wrong position on the switch (or your switch is flaky). GP relay hooked up, one terminal with 2 RT/SW wires hanging out with the green wire. This car still has no steering lock, so I am running the switch dangling under the dash with a key. starter cranks. After pumping up fuel from/to a 2 litre bottle next to the transfer pump with the hand primer, I hear the check valve on the back of the pump rattling. That is a good sign. However the return fuel has a lot of bubbles in it. When I stop pumping, the fuel drains out and air comes in. I think I have a return line that is cracked badly, but I don't have return hose yet. So I think I am stuck until I can get some return hose. I did try cranking after I got the fuel up, but no fuel coming out of a cracked injector line. I already put new hose from the fuel container to the prefilter, and from the prefilter to the transfer pump. The line from the transfer pump to the filter looks good, and the hard clear line to the IP looks ok. The hard clear line from the IP check valve to the filter return fitting has been replaced. The cigar line looks ok. The transfer pump appears to be ok, and the filter big bolt appears to be sealed well. Seems to me that the return lines are suspect, and that the primer pump could be leaking, although generally if they leak, they leak when you pump fuel, and are ok when the top is screwed down. This one does not appear to be leaking. But air is getting in somewhere. So the Dissel cranky, but no far in the holes. Funny thing... the starter cranks first, then if I turn the switch further, the lights, buzzers and GPs come on. I am thinking maybe the pin with the double RT/SW may need to go into the plug, rather than the pin with only one RT/SW. If the RT/SW indicates to the relay the switch position, the single may only come on in the start position and the double may come on in the glow position. 1980 240D Mit 1981 OM616 and 81 GP relay. primer pump could be leaking, although generally if they leak, they leak when you pump fuel, and are ok when the top is screwed down. The air (outside) and fuel (inside) seals are completely separate, but they do tend to age together. You can make a new air seal and install it, if you have rubber gasket sheeting and a hole punch set. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Plastic doesn't always mean cheaper. It means lighter weight. Note the W124 was much more efficient than the W123. The weird thing to me is that when the 124 was being designed, Mercedes was a long way from feeling pressure from the Japanese, and from what I've read they were still very much in the mode of we'll engineer the cars as well as we possibly can, and then set prices as high as they need to be to make a profit. So why did someone choose to save a dollar per car by spec'ing plastic instead of metal in such a crucial area? http://www.wired.com/autopia/2011/09/gordon-murray-qa/ I like this guy's thinking. Got me thinking that with the rise of pretty cheap CNC machines and robots, and cheap plastic panel manufacturing, setting up a factory to build cars like this would be cheap and easy once some engineering is done. Could be some fun kit opportunities too, source some standard engine/drivetrain/suspension components. Of course the gummint would get involved and screw it all up, but still... They (Perea) say it is best not to disburb it and that it is difficult to test and confirm that it contains or does not contain asbestos. I have thought seriously about trying to vaccuum it out of the attic but do not wish to have the dust filter down into the rooms below. The house is old enough that there is no poly vapour barrier in the ceiling so there would be cracks that might permit some to filter down. My other choice may be to put up a poly vapour barrier and then cover the ceilings with new material from below so that I have less concern about the filtering down of small particles when it is windy out etc. The kitchen is drywall so it is fairly tight with the exception of the two lights but the living room and one of the bedrooms have wooden ceilings that will not be quite as tight. I do wonder how dangerous it might be to remove it if I was careful and wore a good respirator etc. Again, my major concern is that disturbing it in the attic might cause the particles to filter down into the rooms below and I am uncertain as to how one might best prevent or clean that up after. [MBZ] I should follow my own advise: Far, WAS OM616, cranky, no far
Today, I got some SAE 1/8 fuel line as a hasty substitute for the real thing. This evening, I changed out the return lines, pumped it (fuel) up with the hand pump and cranked the old car. As much as I rail about keeping air out of the fuel lines, and all the sneaky ways it could get in, I did not believe the return lines were so crucial. One of them must have been broken in two under the fabric. Once I got the return lines replaced, the fuel stayed in the clear section of line I grafted onto the cigar hose so it would reach to the bottom of the fuel. I cut a little of the top off a 2 liter bottle, and it seemed to be securely wedged behind the transfer pump, held up by the steering gear, hoses and whatnot. That seemed to make a reasonable trial fuel tank to see if it will run. So I got in and gave it a little crank. It fired up on 3 pretty fast. So I got out, confirmed the fuel was coming out of the cracked #1, and tightened it down. Then I waited a few min. to let the starter cool. When I cranked it again, it fired almost immediately, but soon died. (FAR IN ALL 4 HOLES!) I cranked it several more times, and the bendix would spin out as soon as it fired, so it didn't stay running. No time would it keep running on its own. But it sounded good when it did fire, so I was puzzled as to why it did not keep running. Mrs. O'leary's cow. When I got out, I found the old cow had kicked, and turned the fuel container on its side. The container was nearly empty and the return hose was out of the container. It pumped fuel all over the floor.I thought the resting place for the fuel was pretty steady. but it was not. Fortunately, this time the cow did not kick over a lamp to light the fuel on fire. Nor did I have hay and straw in the vicinity. So, I am convinced the engine will run. More work is needed to get it to run. Next up is to drain the tank and replace the hoses. When the hoses are all hooked up, then, with some fuel in the tank, I will see if I can keep the old girl running on fresh fuel. After that, i will put in the radiator, and flush the cooling system, add exhaust system (i hope) and then it should be ready to test clutch and brakes, then when those pass, take it around the block. 1980 240D mit 1981 OM616 engine and GP relay. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Mercedes Classic Center
Yesterday I got into LAX at 11am and since I couldn't check into my hotel until after 3 I decided to take a ride down to the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine. Its about a 45 minute drive down to Irvine, the Classic Center isn't all that hard to find unless you're dazed from a day of travel. Inside the facility is really nice, they've got 3 (!) rear engine pre-war cars which is apparently amazingly rare. They've also got what they bill as the nicest 180D Ponton in the world, I got some pics of the engine bay, you could eat in there no problem. That car is glorious. Also pretty cool is the Patent Motorwagen which is just as small in person as I expected it to be from the videos on Youtube. Anyway heres the pics: http://s843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/Mercedes_Classic_Center/ I stayed there for about an hour, chatted with John about the clutch rod for my 240D(!) he suggested I modify the clutch rod I have and maybe try another MC which he offered me a good price on. Indeed, that is the best way to go. In our case, we wanted to move a wall and remove soffits.
