I remember the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban missile standoff too.

I was on ground alert with nuke-loaded B-52's at Robins AFB, GA.

Bay of Pigs was not one of JFKs shining moments. Can you imagine the
media frenzy if a President Bush had done that? Or Jimay Cahtah's
hostage non-rescue fiasco.

Can anyone tell me if there should be a light in the light switch (I
have several mbz with same switch). If there is a light, how do I
replace it?

There's a light in the center of the knob, it's to indicate
that the rear fog light is on. The knob pulls off to access
the bulb. The bezel often has its own dash light too, but
that's accessed from behind.

One of my earliest memories as a child was of JFK's funeral.

I was home sick from grade school, but I was well enough to be in the
basement taking apart .22 shells and melting the lead bullets into
ingots.

And they want to keep kids now from lifting a hand until they are
16/18/21 and then they are worthless because they have never learned
how to do anything constructive.

Actually, I remember the JFK speech that kicked off the space race.

I got my first color TV in 1981 or 82. to go with the new house we
built. A Zenith. It was also the first new TV I ever had.

My parents got a used color TV about 5 -6 years after I got out of
HS and was on my own. It was a zenith

It is interesting to see some of the shows I saw in B/W as a kid in
color on the rerun channels. Dan'l Boone has really striking color.
Reminds me of Ektachrome film.

Should have said Truman vice Eisenhower, here's the Wikipedia entry:

CONELRAD (Control of Electromagnetic Radiation) was a method of emergency
broadcasting to the public of the United States in the event of enemy attack
during the Cold War. It was intended to serve two purposes; to prevent Soviet
bombers from homing in on American cities by using radio or TV stations as
beacons, and to provide essential civil defense information. U.S. President
Harry S. Truman established CONELRAD in 1951. After the development of
intercontinental ballistic missiles reduced the likelihood of a bomber attack,
CONELRAD was replaced by the Emergency Broadcast System on August 5, 1963,
which was later replaced with the Emergency Alert System in 1997; all were
administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Nationwide Test of the Emergency Alert System
Wednesday, November 9 at 2:00 PM EST

On Wednesday, November 9th at 2:00pm EST, the Federal Emergency
Management
Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in
conjunction
with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will
conduct
the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System. The test
will last
approximately 30 seconds and will be transmitted via television and
radio

stations across the U.S.

The national Emergency Alert System is an alert and warning system
that can be
activated by the President, if needed, to provide information to the
American
public during emergencies. While the system is often tested in local
markets (a
test with which you and the American public may be very familiar), a
nationwide
test will be instrumental in evaluating and improving the system,
should it ever

be needed.

Here are specific items we want everyone to know about the test:

---It will be conducted Wednesday, November 9 at 2:00 PM EST.
---It will be transmitted via television and radio stations within
the U.S.,
including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S.
Virgin

Islands, and American Samoa.
---Similar to local emergency alert system tests, an audio message will
interrupt television and radio programming indicating: "This is a test."
---When the test is over, regular programming will resume.

As we get close to the test, the FCC and all of our many partners are
working
together to spread the word to as many members of the public as
possible -- so
people know what to expect when the test takes place, and no one is
caught off
guard. We're asking everyone to join us by spreading the word to your
neighbors,
co-workers, friends and family -- share this message, post a message
on your
social media site, and feel free to embed our videos on your website
or blog.

I'm looking for a few parts to clean up the old 911 over the winter. I
need some rubber bits, and some hoses. Do you stock parts for old
 Porsches. It's an 1980 SC.

If you do, would you please shoot me your link for your porsche page
 again.

 Thanks in advance,

Re: [MBZ] Hey Ed in Canada! Cheap 928?

2011-11-09 Thread E M
Hi Alex,

yeah, porsche has offered some pretty, erm, interesting colours over the
years. They also came with a plaid or 60s acid design interior.

I really like the early design, as I do with most cars. More pure to me.
I also really like the 5 speed, though they are more rare, I think
something like 80-90% are auto. The early ones used a 3 speed, the later
ones a 4. I think the autos box is, or has the internals of the same
period S Class. I perfer the 5, though some said it ate syncros. Mind
you, a lot of people who complain about standard tranmissions breaking, are
not always overly gifted, when it comes to manual shifting. I have one
friend who has put lots of miles on a '79 with a 5 speed, including track
events, with no problems.

Another nice thing about the early cars, is that if you break the timing
belt, it's not an interferring engine. That's my understanding anyway.
The later ones have more power, but the early ones are lots of fun too.
When it comes to belts, you MUST service the car as it deserves to be
services, as a broken belt in a lter model will bankrupt you! I've torn
down 928S engines with broken belts, and it isn't cheap to put them right
again! Keep an eye on the water pump too, and make it a replacement item
when you're doing the belt. Easy to do when you in there. Check the
torque tube too. A lot of mechanics don't install them correctly, by not
leaving the proper factory free play in them, and the than fail early.

As with an old top of the line Mercedes, remember, there really is no such
thing as a cheap 928. But in my opinion, they are worth it.

Can't wait to see the Pan 2 door that porsche is working on. Some calling
it the 928 replacement. Fingers crossed. :-)

[MBZ] OT CONELRAD Alert!

2011-11-09 Thread Rich Thomas
OK I just heard it, and it was definitely a CONELRAD alert, it even had
the same scratchy, staticky, barely understandable
AM-during-bad-sunspot-activity lo-fi minimal-modulation quality that the
CONELRAD alerts did back when. Maybe it was from a time warp channeling
50s transmissions to duck and cover.

One might think that in these days of digital communications and various
techniques for sending information over the airwaves, that it would
sound like something vaguely understandable? Or maybe that is precisely
the purpose of this technique, to survive The Big One? But will it come
this time from the commies?

Nationwide Test of the Emergency Alert System
Wednesday, November 9 at 2:00 PM EST

On Wednesday, November 9th at 2:00pm EST, the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in conjunction
with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will conduct
the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System. The test will last
approximately 30 seconds and will be transmitted via television and radio
stations across the U.S.

The national Emergency Alert System is an alert and warning system that can be
activated by the President, if needed, to provide information to the American
public during emergencies. While the system is often tested in local markets (a
test with which you and the American public may be very familiar), a nationwide
test will be instrumental in evaluating and improving the system, should it ever
be needed.

Here are specific items we want everyone to know about the test:

---It will be conducted Wednesday, November 9 at 2:00 PM EST.
---It will be transmitted via television and radio stations within the U.S.,
including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin
Islands, and American Samoa.
---Similar to local emergency alert system tests, an audio message will
interrupt television and radio programming indicating: "This is a test."
---When the test is over, regular programming will resume.

As we get close to the test, the FCC and all of our many partners are working
together to spread the word to as many members of the public as possible -- so
people know what to expect when the test takes place, and no one is caught off
guard. We're asking everyone to join us by spreading the word to your neighbors,
co-workers, friends and family -- share this message, post a message on your
social media site, and feel free to embed our videos on your website or blog.

The only lamp in the switch is for the fog light, but it is not installed in
